I found the brisket to be moist and flavorful, if a little light on smoke, as if they are maybe oven-finishing. Final analysis: worth stopping in if you are in the vicinity. The Blue Moon BBQ, is worth the drive. I took another route to Bryan, Texas and stumbled upon the Blue Moon BBQ. Dang, I'm glad I did. As usual, the best places don't really have the curb appeal, but when you see smoke, you know it's going to be good. They have several choices to choose from. I went with the ribs (pork), jalapeño/cheese sausage and brisket. My sides were the macaroni salad an Cole slaw . Every bite was delicious !! On the table, they had bread and BBQ sauce. So far, blue moon is the best BBQ I've tried! I drove 30 mins to this place. And the brisket and the back rib totally convinced me that it worth the 1 hour round trip. Me and my friends ordered brisket, baby back ribs, cowboy corn bread and banana pudding. The brisket is so tender and moist, and sometimes you can feel it's melted in your mouth. The ribs are so good even without the sauce. The skin is crispy and you can taste the "flavor of coal" (I mean it's like real BBQ). The banana pudding taste very healthy. It is sweet but not like those oversweet addictive but like real homemade original flavor pudding! Mrs. Moon is super nice and very enthusiastic! We had pretty high expectations when we went here a while ago especially since it has been featured on Texas Best BBQ lists. We were pretty disappointed by the food which was a shame because I would have loved to leave a really positive review. First of all, we asked for the meat (turkey and brisket) to be hot and when it came out, it was colder than room temperature. It was already a chilly, dreary day so that wasn't pleasant. The turkey...calling it moist would be an understatement. It was almost as if water was sprinkled on top of it which wasn't appealing considering the meat was cold. The BBQ sauce was decent but it couldn't make up for the lackluster turkey and brisket. Maybe this was just an off day but after that experience, I can't say I could recommend this place. read more

This place is off the beaten path. In fact, we drove right past it by over five miles before we realized our mistake. Chalk it up to three guys talking BBQ nonstop and not paying attention very well. It's not really in Hearne proper, but a few miles east, closer to a little community called Edge, TX, which may or may not be on your maps. Knowing that it's at the corner of OSR and Macey Rd. will help you find it. Owner Matt Moon was away for the day, but Toni greeted us at the counter and took our order for some moist brisket and a couple ribs. One of the things that first caught our eye at Blue Moon BBQ is their Cowboy Cornbread, described on their menu as "chopped brisket, tomatoes, chilies and onions, stirred up in cornbread, cooked in a cast iron skillet then covered in cheese." We had to have one. Every bite was delicious. If I could make a pillow out of this just so I could eat it all night, I would. Matt's father, Rick Moon, running the pits on this day, checked up on us before we left to be sure the product was to our liking. It was. The brisket was tender and had a unique rub that provided a flavorful bark, and their baby back ribs had a nice glaze with a little spice. When we asked for other recommendations, Toni suggested that we try one of her bacon brownies, so we finished this visit by splitting a piece three ways. What a great bite--slightly chewy brownie, with a healthy amount of diced cooked bacon embedded in the surface prior to baking. The result was a perfect balance of savory and sweet, with the salt of the bacon providing just the right complement for the sweet chocolate brownie. It's a dessert I wouldn't normally try, but I'm glad I did, and we all went back and each bought another one to take home. We agreed this was a great visit, and with their very tasty brisket at just $13.45/lb, one of the best values by far for quality BBQ on the trail. Tried this place because it was listed in the top 50 in Texas. Here we go: Opened at 11 and they were out of brisket at 1 so didn't get to try that. You would think they'd have more than two hours worth when they're open until 7. Turkey was decent, very tender and moist. Ribs were flavored well and very tender. Definitely the redeemer here. Sausage was obviously out of a package. I could have bought sausage at HEB and done a better job. Potato salad was store bought. Pinto beans tasted like Bush's with a few things added in. I did not have pulled pork but friend said it was good. Cowboy cornbread was premade and heated in the microwave. Cheese on top was even fully melted. Banana pudding was straight out of a box and only got two bites out before it went in the trash. Sauce was nothing to write home about, probably also store bought. Plastic ware and bread was all prewrapped and sitting in the little table servers. There were two tables inside being taken up by locals who had finished earlier and were just hanging out so everyone else had to sit outside. Several people picking up to go orders, probably because of the A&M game a little ways away. However, we waited almost 40 minutes to get three plates of reheated food. Unless you want sweet tea you have to walk to the gas station store next door to purchase a drink. I ordered banana nut bread for dessert because they had already ran out of banana pudding, which it turns out was a blessing in disguise. By the time our food came out they had run out of the banana but bread so I was compensated with a chocolate chip cookie pie thing and a brownie. I give points for making up for the issue. Overall we expected more from a place listed in the Texas Monthly Top 50. Maybe they weren't ready for a crowd on game day. Or maybe this place is best left to serving locals who haven't traveled to other top spots. They get two stars for attentive and friendly service and pretty good ribs. We happened to be driving by on a return road trip back to McKinney. We are recent transplants to Texas and had read somewhere how to spot a good BBQ place. The article said that pickup trucks in the parking lot and smoke coming out of the restaurant were good indicators. As we drove by I asked my wife if we should stop. She said it had the right indicators so I turned around and we went in. The place is tiny. I think it is a converted home. There are a couple of tables inside and some picnic tables outside. We planned to take our sandwich orders and eat them while we drove. No way! Too much good sauce to risk dripping while driving. I had the brisket and my wife had the turkey and both were beyond excellent. We both said it was some of the best BBQ we have tasted. The place is easy to miss but if you are in the area and want to try some local BBQ I think you will be very happy you stopped here. read more

Wonderful BBQ! My husband and I had the brisket, pepper jack sausage, and pulled pork. The brisket was buttery and flavorful, the best I've had! We adored the bold flavor of the pepper jack sausage, not spicy just incredible! The pulled pork was moist and had all of the porky goodness I craved. I went to Blue Moon today and I had heard great things, however, I witnessed anything but great. I am going to organize this review into three parts. The service, the atmosphere, and the food. First, the service. The service was very good. It seemed that there was always a worker coming to check on us. Even the head pit-master came out to check on us in the dining room. Next, the atmosphere. The atmosphere was alright. The room seemed cute at first, however, it quickly became very cramped with a line of people in the room and it became very uncomfortable to be in. Finally, the food. Obviously, the most important part of a restaurant is the food. This is where the overall experience lacked drastically. I ordered a 1/2 lb of brisket and 1/2 lb of sausage. Along with beans and a sweet tea. The brisket was sliced extremely thin and the meat had elastic characteristics to it. The brisket also seemed flavor-less. It had a very little smoke-ring and my slices didn't have any bark on it at all. The brisket was very poor. Even worse than the beef was the sausage. Both the original and pepper jack sausages were not good at all. I saw some workers taking pre-packaged sausage to the pit room. Nothing would be wrong with this if the sausage was at least decent. While I was eating the sausage I felt as if I was eating a sliced hot dog. Absolutely zero snap to the skinless hotdog-like "sausage". The only thing that was decent were the pinto beans. The beans had good flavor but unfortunately the tasty pinto beans could not make up for the poor meats. Overall, I was extremely surprised with the dissatisfying food. I had heard great things about the restaurant and I was looking forward to going for a while. Again, the staff were all kind and helpful. Drove past this place for years. Never knew it was worth hitting the brakes for! The staff are all super nice. I highly suggest the "bean pot" with some "cowboy cornbread". What more can I say but AWESOME!! We had a full rack of ribs and Cowboy Cornbread and it was all so good, our friends had nachos with pulled pork and the other with brisket. The ribs had such an intense smoke flavor and a great smoke ring, for Baby Back it was a very decent sided slab. Cowboy Cornbread is a great invention, cornbread mixed with lots of goodies, cooked in a griddle with cheese on top YUM!
