Food was awful and confusing. We ordered a ribeye steak and I went to the bathroom and when I came back in literally two minutes, they already had the steak we ordered out on the table. They said another table ordered wrong, but it happened to be the same dish so they're giving it to us. I should have said no, but I didnt want to make my friend who brought me there feel bad. The steak was cold and overcooked, the fries were just like frozen fries you can get at Walmart. They were also cold. I feel they did that just to save money which means restaurant first and not customer first. I can't see them doing that at Din Tai Fung. The other dishes (clams, pork tacos, almond tofu) were a little bit better but really small portions and tasted a bit off. I get they were going for fusion, but none of it was really Taiwanese, so my palette was more confused. I also got a stomach ache later that night. Half the restaurant was not even well lit, and it looked like they didn't have the money to decorate the place. The bar and the main dining area are in the same small room. I guess they were trying to make the bar a bit moodier by turning off the overhead lights, but I would have purposely gotten accent lighting and make the bar look clearly like a cool bar and the dining area look like a proper dining area. Another aspect of the restaurant that was confusing. It seems like they had another room for larger parties, but I didn't get to see it. For an upscale restaurant, it was pretty drab. The service was slow. The servers were nice and friendly though. Also crazy expensive for the quality of food they're serving you. Would not go back.

First time: 5 stars We came for a birthday last year with extended family, and they were nice enough to give us one of the two private rooms. Service was great, food was great, and they gave free desserts for the birthday peeps. Second time: 3.5 stars Not sure what happened but went again recently with a smaller group of 4. Food was mixed-- Highs: Duck breast was so tender and perfectly cooked with delicious sauce and interesting side of grilled brocolli and mandarin. Truffle scallion noodle was their take on cold noodles, so rich with lick your plate good sauce. Middles: ribs pretty good and fork tender. Grilled fish collar was fine, nothing special, didnt like the sauce. Bottom: Sweetfish was super salty, to the point it was almost inedible. Pork lettuce wraps were tasty, but the middle part was not cooked through, to their credit the restaurant remade it for us Parking lot in back is free. Nicely decorated and modern look. Food was not super consistent, but worth checking out if especially if you need a private room

Server Sean really served us!

Chloe and Sean are probably the best servers in San Gabriel Valley. I say that because I worked through my MBA program as a server in a Chinese restaurant in Oklahoma City. It's my girlfriend second visit so she ordered three entrees which were not ordered last time to explore new stuff. cold chicken noodle dish, very popular in the SoCal recent heat, sliced duck meat with crunchy lettuce 2 big pieces of steamed fish filets on top of chucks of cabbage and cherry tomatoes. When I looked at the check, I was shocked. It was so inexpensive.

I really wanted to love this place but everything was disappointing and nothing was outstanding. I did, however, enjoy the decor and the staff were awesome. Appetizers - Popcorn Chicken lacked flavor. The crisp was good but it just wasn't flavorful. - Sichuan chilli fries - aside from the general lack in the flavor the chilli oil itself was just meh. Also, top of the cheese was slightly charred (good) but there was still a layer of cold cheese in the middle. - Duck Bao - I was most excited for this - it was not good. The sauce reminded us of the walnut shrimp sauce and it just didn't go well together Mains - Pork Belly - it was tough. I don't know how thats possible but it was tough and dry. - Carbonara - the spaghetti itself was perfectly cooked but it was a tad salty - chicken soap - no notes, this was actually pretty good. I enjoyed it.

Elegant and modern ambiance, attentive service, and a memorable spread of Taiwanese fusion dishes: Duck Salad with Fruit Plum Dressing, Chili Oil Wontons, Drunken shrimp, Cured Pork Egg Yolk Carbonara, and Grilled Chicken with Shacha. A delicious way to celebrate another year around the sun!

Popcorn chicken, drunken shrimp, pork jowl

Such a beautifully designed space, but unfortunately poorly executed food. I love the beautifully selected plates and serving dishes. We originally made reservations for DineLA, but had to move it. Luckily the day of, we called to do that, because we would've showed up to a closed restaurant? They said they announced it on their socials, so they didn't need to call those who made reservations, which is quite unprofessional. Although they were honoring DineLA for another week, we weren't available so made reservations for a different week to order à la carte. The braised pork belly was good, but very overpriced for what it was. We decently enjoyed the pork jowl, it was salty if you didn't eat it with the accompanying pickles and lettuce. The truffle cold noodles were actually pleasant; garlicky and a good fusion combination. Popcorn chicken, traditional, but had to send it back, as the chicken had an off putting taste. The duck bun looked pretty, but the bun was hard as a rock and the flavors didn't go well together. The drunken shrimp was underwhelming. You could tell when you peel the shrimp that it's definitely frozen and mealy and $18 for 4pc of frozen shrimp is wild. I love fusion when it's done well, some of their dishes are creative, but it's quite disappointing to see simple Chinese classic charged ridiculously high for a little portion just because they are trying to be "high end." $16 for popcorn chicken, you can get the same amount and better at a boba place for less. We wanted to try the fish collar: not available, clams: not available. Really wanted to love this place, but hopefully things change cause it really is a stunning restaurant. Shout out to our server though, he was kind, attentive, and friendly.

Upscale dining experience and vibe, great service, but quite expensive. We booked on Resy for a Saturday 5pm, super easy on yelp but Resy site had everything as unavailable. When we got there, we were the first ones in considering they just opened at 5pm so we got good service and attention. Super nice and patient, checked in on us a few times, refilled the 2 side dishes that we didn't know was an option, and made good menu recommendations. We had the tofu appetizer, duck breast entree, and pork jowl entree. All 3 were delicious with new flavors we've never had before, but we wouldn't spend that much again for 2 people. You go in knowing what you're getting, was a cool experience.

Beef noodle soup

I think that one should try it at least once. There's attempts to bring Asian-centric fusion (think Japanese/western take on Taiwanese food) to our palates. Not all dishes hit but the standout was the truffle chicken sesame cold noodle and the pork scallion "tacos". I'd prefer the beef noodle soup to use fattier cuts of meat instead of what seemed like pieces of porterhouse. I wouldn't mind coming back and trying more dishes. Would prefer that the menu describes the dishes better. Prices were reasonable and service good.

Stopped by Blue Magpie Local Find for the first time and lucked out -- they're running a special menu this week for Mid-Autumn Festival! We tried the majority of the special menu items, and everything was delicious. You can tell they put real care into these dishes. Portions were decent -- we left full and happy. The service was excellent, really friendly and attentive without hovering. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and the place was clean throughout. We'll definitely be back. Highly recommend checking out the special menu while it's still available!

Came by for dinner the other night to try out their new menu. We were served a total of 8 courses and we also did the drink pairing. Presentation wise, everything looked really good. Although I was a little confused on why some dishes were plated off centered. It made me think the dish was missing some parts or something. Their service was really good and attentive. Food was flavorful and portion was pretty generous. I sometimes leave restaurants with tasting menus still hungry but I left feeling pretty content this time. Best part was the price didn't break my wallet! I thought it was pretty affordable even though this restaurant is somewhat upscale. I would recommend coming to try their new menu!

Upscale Taiwanese fusion done right From Shaoxing Wine-Poached Shrimp and Tea-Smoked Duck wrapped in crispy tofu skin to Sour & Spicy Parchment Baked Branzino and a comforting bowl of Braised Beef Wide Noodle Soup, every dish brought a modern twist to flavors we know and love. Favorites? The melt-in-your-mouth Seared Scallop & Chimichurri, Lettuce-Wrapped Salt Pork, and desserts that absolutely stole the show -- Taiwanese Caramel Flan and Truffle Earl Grey Basque Cheesecake Paired it all with the Rum Lemon Tea, Moonlight Bloom, and Winter Melon Highball for the perfect night out If you're looking for a spot that elevates Taiwanese cuisine while staying true to its roots, Blue Magpie deserves a spot on your list

Having grown up enjoying Taiwanese cuisine, this was my first time experiencing an 8-course tasting menu. Each dish beautifully combined Asian flavors with modern culinary techniques. From the Hokkaido scallop and abalone to the tea-smoked duck and dessert, every course reflected the chef's attention to detail and balance of flavors. The carefully curated pairings further elevated the overall dining experience. From the presentation to the service and ambiance, every detail left a lasting impression. Price: $88 for the 8 courses tasting menu (+ $88 for the wine pairing menu) IG: socalhkfoodies

Love the creative fusion menu. The portion size is on the smaller side, and we would recommend an appetizer and an entree as a complete meal. We had the refreshing salmon salad, spicy cold noodles, Taiwanese iconic sesame oil chicken risotto, and BBQ ribs. They all tasted yummy, and you can taste the fresh ingredients in their veggie choice. I would like to try their dinner menu with a few cocktails for our next visit!

Restaurant exterior has a big elephant statue in front of it... great photo op! Inside space had dark wood appeal to it... very clean and well kept. Upon entry, we were greeted and seated right away. It was still early so not too busy at the time. Staff was friendly and cordial. Service was decent. Lunch special menu had limited items. Their prices start from $19 and up. Just one tiny gripe, portions were small for the price. My friend ordered the Crispy Duck Salad. It came with crispy tempura-battered duck, fresh mixed sprouts and grapefruit, pine nuts and tahini topped with drizzles of blended hoisin sauce, chu hou sauce, and plum sauce. Greens were great, but duck was a tad salty for my taste. I got the Truffle Wok Seared Noodles with Scallops (lunch portion). It was recommended by our server, Cameron. Thank you for the delicious recommend! Dish came with a small bowl of intensely sour, spicy, salty, and aromatic Tom Yum soup... very good! Overall dish was amazing served with tasty wok-flavor handmade egg noodles and perfectly cooked scallops complemented with yummy mushrooms, brussels sprout leaves, and Thai basil all tossed in a dark black truffle sauce. YUM! I slurped up the noodles in a jiffy. Unfortunately, it only came with 3 medium sized scallops. I would get this again if it came with 3 more scallops and more noodles. Overall dining experience was pleasant, cozy, and delicious. Thanks Star Leaf!

Located in a busy neighborhood of El Monte, CA, this restaurant was a pleasant surprise. Limited parking is available behind the restaurant, and street parking is an option if you can find a space. Upon entering, I immediately noticed how clean, well-organized, and modern everything looked. The electronic menu board is clearly and prominently displayed as you walk in. The menu is quite extensive, with options including wraps, salads, bowls, breakfast items, smoothies, and meal-prepped dishes with chicken, beef, salmon, tofu, and much more. I was impressed by the variety of choices and portions. My wife ordered an Asian chicken salad and garlic edamame, while I had a house salad with chicken and shrimp, plus a strawberry-banana smoothie and (2) protein donuts. Each dish was absolutely delicious. The lettuce in our salads was crunchy and fresh, the chicken and shrimp were flavorful and well-seasoned, the garlic edamame was tasty and cooked perfectly, and my banana and strawberry smoothie--let's just say I wish I had another one right now, as I loved it! If I may make a small suggestion: please chop the lettuce into smaller pieces, as the lettuce on both our plates contained large pieces that we had to cut ourselves. Despite this minor item, it was a positive dining experience, and we definitely plan to return soon to try other items on the menu.

I met a friend here for dinner and had a great dine-in experience. We both ordered their "Original Nagoya Mazesoba" $15.29 and got their Karaage $8.99 to share. It was my first time here and I figured the famous original dish is always good. The noodles are thick, and all of the strands had their own little bounce to them, just the way I like it! It arrives unmixed so I also enjoyed vigorously mixing it myself and seeing it all come together. I especially enjoyed popping the poached egg on top and seeing the egg oooozing, paired with the minced pork, green onions, chives, dish powder, seaweed, and garlic. They have really perfected the recipe here to make the perfect dry noodle dish! If you dine in, the servers will also bring you a scoop of rice. I didn't really understand it at first as to why, but I later finished my noodles and thought "oooohhhhhh!" FYI the rice is used to pick up the rest of the delicious sauce left on the bottom of your bowl and it makes for an extra carb-filled surprise. The perfect way to end a noodle dish by the way, with rice for more carbs, duh! My only feedback, and I was indeed warned by my friend, is that the noodles make you a little thirsty. My friend told me she thinks its their fish powder seasoning that somehow makes you just feel like you need to chug a glass of water, so just make sure to bring a little extra water with you, haha! Also, fair warning here since you made it this far to reading this long review. The seats were very loud to move around in the dining area, and we can just about hear every squeak the metal chair made when anyone moved their seat, too! Other than those things, the noodles are a life I've already been raving about Menya Hanabi to my friends and will definitely come back!
