Blue Fin is a great Japanese restaurant with fresh ingredients and tasty food. Sometimes they are so busy, there can be a wait. But I didn't take any stars off the rating because they tell you up front, at the time of ordering. The food is so good, that I see why sometimes they get backed up though! I have only ever gotten fresh food with great rice. I mention the rice as to get such fresh rice every time, I have found to be a real hallmark of a great Asian restaurant. Ha ha ha read more

I love sushi but I appreciate that Blue Fin has a larger menu than just sushi. I like ordering the salmon teriyaki bento box as it gives a good variety of different Japanese food. The tempura is light and crisp, not at all greasy. The salad dressing isn't my favorite but it is adequate. The teriyaki salmon is delicious. I don't eat meat so I can't speak to their other options like teriyaki chicken. I appreciate that you can choose between tempura and gyoza since the gyoza has pork. California rolls are not my favorite either but it balances out the rest of the bento box nicely. When I do order sushi, Blue Fin is my go to in Bellingham for Nigiri sushi. Nigiri and Bento boxes were some of the best I've had. Coming from Irvine in orange country I've had my fair share of bento and this one is so well made. Price is a bit high but it's justified based on the quality. I had some snapper which the lady recommended over the phone and it was delightfully tender and fresh. Some of the safest Covid measures I've seen from a take out place in Bellingham as well. Some people have complained about the wait I've seen but it only took 25 min, and calling ahead really helped. Ok service has gotten a lot better so I am updating my review. The sushi is still over priced but out of all places they have the best spicy tuna sashimi sauce but the tuna itself felt a little dry. Holy fish rolls!!! I'm a fan of Sushi. I had been searching for a sushi restaurant that would blow my tastebuds! I found it! This quaint little restaurant is just what you need for great service and efficient staff. Not too big, but enough seating to be comfortable! The sushi chefs are thoughtful and consistent, which I must say is a huge must! Each time I've dined at Blue Fin, the look or taste of the rolls never change! The wait staff is attentive. On top of those refills!!! They pre bus the tables in a timely manner and keep the dining room nice and tidy. Might I mention the noise level is just perfect. I just moved here from CA and this is the second sushi place I've tried. I'm shocked to see Blue Fin below Jun's. The service was a bit slower than Jun's, but they were packed and had people waiting, along with reservations. The girls running the front seem to all help each other and work fast with good attitudes. When they brought me my spider roll and jalapeño poppers, I couldn't believe how beautiful the presentation was. Taste? Friggin bomb. When I pulled into Blue Fin's lot, I thought it looked like some cooperation or something. Are they? I have no clue. But they actually have a parking lot (which seems rare in Bellingham), and they really pay attention to detail. I really appreciate when a sushi restaurant shows a photo of each of their rolls, which they actually do. It really helps you decide when you're too hungry to read a menu. They don't use too much rice (like Jun's). So yea! Basically I'm saying, avoid choosing yelps number one Sushi recommendation, and go with number two. I come here for special occasions. Every time I stop by, I ask the chef over the counter "what do you recommend today?" Certain fish are seasonal. Also depending on the day, they seem to be able to get super excellent quality fish by chance. For rolls, my favorites are Rainbow ($12), Cherry Blossom ($14), Ruby ($13), Wild Thing ($14). This is the only legit sushi joint in Bellingham. I'm sorry but my wife and I are sushi snobs and only consider places such as Shiro/Shimaya and Sushi by Yuji and other similar restaurants in Vancouver BC as authentic and worthwhile to go. We have been struggling to find somewhere that is tolerable in Bellingham and I'm glad we do not have to look anymore. The fish is fresh and the place wasabi in their nigiri. I'm a die hard for some good sushi, and new to the area I've been dying to find a spot. This place is super close to my house, so I was hoping for the best. My first time ordering there, I ended up getting pretty bad food poisoning later that night. Giving the place the benefit of the doubt, I tried it again a few months later. Had bad service here several times in dining and takeout. My husband drove 20 min to get some sushi because they disconnected their phone and we couldn't order online either. He got there over an hour before they closed and the doors locked. The lady comes out and says "we have too many orders so we aren't taking anymore". What kind of business operates like that? They should at least answer their phone and tell customers that! There are a lot of other sushi restaurants in Bellingham that are so much better, not just their service but also their food! Almost a 4 star here. Would be higher but I feel like the price is pretty steep for rolls that only have 5-8 pieces. We came at lunch time on a Friday and were seated quickly. The restaurant is open and clean and the wait staff were very friendly and attentive. We had a group of five and were seated near the door. The menu is expansive with a lot of roll options. It was almost a little overwhelming but provided lots of good choices. I went with the P-Tai Roll and gyoza. My friend let me know one roll would not be enough, maybe for someone with portion control I guess, but they were small, you would still be hungry after one roll. The P-Tai roll was delicious. Tempura snapper, cucumber, avocado, topped with tobico, spicy mayo, and Sriracha. It was listed as spicy but it by no means had any heat, no more than a small amount of wasabi, could definitely use more heat. The fish was very fresh, so we're the vegetables. The fish was crunchy and delicious. The rice was tender, overall I really enjoyed the roll. My friends also enjoyed their rolls, but agreed they were a little small for the price. The gyoza I had I think were frozen, which was ok, but it's always better to find a place with gyoza made in house. It had a bit too much of that acrid onion flavor and cabbage. They were decent. So there *is* good sushi in Bellingham after all! I decided to try again to treat myself to sushi here after a long clinic last night, and I'm pleased that I can stop searching, because this is definitely my spot. As soon as I walked in, service was friendly and attentive, and I was promptly seated at a small table. Inside decor is very nice too. One thing I've pretty much resigned myself to is the mediocre tea that is served in asian eateries in this country; oversteeped and bitter, or else not much more than hot water. I could tell I was in for something good at this place as soon as I tasted my tea--it was a lovely Genmaicha with a deep complex toasty flavor, and served at the perfect time and temperature. The miso soup was similarly good, it was obviously house-made from fresh miso instead of being the cheap reconstituted stuff. (You know, when the cloudy bit keeps separating and you have to stir it back in? This wasn't like that.) I wanted to get a sampling of the sushi, so I decided to order the Sushi Dragon plate and a 911 roll. This gave me two rolls and eight pieces of nigiri. I'm glad I did it that way, because even though I really liked both rolls, the nigiri ended up being my favorite part. All the fish was of outstanding quality and was impeccably fresh, and the cuts were very generous. Not only did I love my usual favorites like the salmon and all three kinds of tuna, but more impressively, even the mackerel (which I normally don't care for due to its 'fishy' flavor) was soft, buttery, and had a depth of flavor I don't normally find. Service was great through the whole visit, and I didn't have to wait long to settle the check. I will be back to try some of the rest of the menu, and to have some more of that amazing nigiri sushi. It's probably a shade too pricey to have every single time I go to Bellingham, but that's just the way it is with sushi places--even the bad ones are expensive. I love sushi. I could eat it every day. I would if I could. I've been to at least 2 other sushi places in Bellingham and this is BY FAR the best one. Mainly because its the only place Ive found that serves what Blue Fin Sushi calls the Summer Roll. It's a sushi roll that has had the rice replaced by cucumber, and its absolutely delicious. Another roll I always order is the Golden Bridge, which is a baked roll with scallops, cucumber and crab. I like this place WAY more than Wasabee because of the wide selection of rolls and the size of the rolls. I like this place WAY more than Kuru Kuru because the quality of the rolls and fish they serve. Of course, service is excellent. The wait staff is fast and friendly. The prices are reasonable. This is definitely my go-to place when I want sushi. read more

What a flip flop experience. Our first time visit was for a late lunch on Friday. At first, we were greeted by a very quite waitress who didn't say much and took a very long time to place our order. Not much of a greeting or interaction as well, from the owner/sushi chef, as he was immersed in his lap top on the customer side of the sushi counter. From our first impressions, we were not expecting much with the rest of our sushi experience... Boy were we WRONG... We ordered "Sushi & sashimi" and the "Salmon teriyaki bento box". The portions were huge... the fish was very fresh.... the salmon was tender and delicious... the creations were magnificent. The Ozeki Nigori Sake was smooth and refreshing. All in all, we were pleasantly surprised by the second half of our visit. The WWU students are so lucky to have such a good quality sushi restaurant so close to their campus. When in Washington, try the fish. I was excited to try sushi up here, and Blue Fin did not disappoint. It's a little spendy, like most sushi joints, but it's very good quality. Two of us had drinks and dinner for $80 with tip, with one specialty combo plate and several rolls. They're a bit lacking on the sashimi options, but otherwise it was a pretty decent spot. The service was a little slow, but that being said, I wasn't in a huge rush. They were accommodating when we could get their attention, and were upfront that the tea costs $2 per cup. I went here for my birthday dinner. I have traveled a lot in my life and have eaten a diverse amount of food. Sushi in Washington has been a hit or miss every time. Mostly misses. Which is kind of weird with how close we are to the water. I do like the amount pf cookes rolls I can find at this location. The Titanic was amazing! The rolls were fresh and my waiter was on point. The restaurant is small and crouded but it has a nice atmosphere. I don't travel to Bellingham often but if I want sushi I will definitely come back here.
