The only place I feel comfortable leaving my baby. Martha loves Blue Dog Ranch and everyone who works there. The staff goes out of their way to accommodate our needs and our schedule. Martha is not a fan of other dogs, and I would not have been able to rescue her without Blue Dog. There are no other acceptable daycare options for an aggressive dog. They have taken amazing care of her 3-4 times a week for 3 years. She also boards when I travel. Martha is always healthy and happy when I pick her up. Sadly for me, she loves the office staff so much that she does not want to leave. Most likely because they keep a special stash of treats just for Martha. I take my dogs to day care every day while I am at work. I had found a place near Burbank airport several years ago and was comfortable and grooved with them, until the owner retired and the school closed. I was then left to research and discover a new place close to my workplace... felt like deja vu from my first go-round. All of the same names and places kept coming up, and I did the tours again. But then I remembered that I had never actually gone and visited Blue Dog Ranch. I am so very glad that I made the effort. Blue Dog Ranch is the closest I could find to what my Boys were used to before... and more! The staff is wonderful, I know that my dogs get great care and attention, and we have made Blue Dog Ranch their new boarding home for when we have to leave town (the best possible recommendation I could ever make... I truly hate leaving my dogs behind at anytime). Jenny and Lisa are patient, knowledgeable and accommodating in the front office, and every staff member I've met really loves and cares about the animals in their care. Lastly, its great (and convenient) that Blue Dog does carry a few treats and some food, saving me trips to the supermarket now and again. He had Kai Nalu for 3 weeks at his facility. He arrived at my home after 3 weeks, we were all ready to get trained by David and learn the new system that he had established with Kai Nalu. Kai Nalu is now 4 months old. She came back in such great shape, a changed dog. We were taught the routine of how to continue her training in our home. KaI Nalu is doing great! Board & Train Review Only. If you are looking for a trainer that will give you updates, have open communication, send pictures or videos of your dog's progress during its 3-week board & train, this is not the place for you. At drop-off, they were reluctant to show us the facility and where our dog would be staying/sleeping during his time there - they said, "he will be at the back of the property in the training house". We drove around the property, it is not large. We were more than willing to take a small walk to the "back of the property" to check out where we would be leaving our dog for 3-weeks. While our dog was there, updates are few and far between - David claimed we could "call or text anytime for updates" but offered very little information when we did connect over the phone and they were unwilling to send more than 1 video and/or picture a week. We ended up pulling our dog out of training after 1.5 weeks because we felt uncomfortable with the lack of information/communication we were getting. It's 2017, any trainer should be able to easily snap a picture/text an update on how your dog is doing. Especially if they are "working with the dog all day, every day". If you're unable to keep an owner informed, then you are most likely taking in too many dogs & not spending the quality time that you say you are spending with them on training. Lastly, when we pulled our dog out of training after 1.5 weeks, David was "unavailable" to bring us our dog himself (it has now been 5 days since we took our dog out & David has yet to try to contact us). They had an assistant trainer help bring our dog to the front office - she threw his bed/food on the ground, came back with our dog, unleashed him and left slamming the door behind her. One day after being home he started showing signs of kennel-cough - we took him to the vet right away and he did, in fact, have kennel-cough. I don't doubt the fact that people have had success with David's training in the past but our experience was extremely unpleasant. If his lack of empathy for concerned parents (and as paying customers) says anything about his training methods, I would suggest looking elsewhere for training. read more

I have used Blue Dog Ranch for the last two years. They are great when it comes to boarding and caring for my two dogs when I have to go out of town. I highly recommend them for your boarding needs. The staff is friendly and most importantly great with not just my dogs but with all the pups I've seen them handle. But the reason I'm writing a review is this. Last time I boarded I asked about training. My male dog had a lot of leash aggression. He was very smart but walks seemed so stressful for him (and me). They passed my number along to the trainer David. He called me right away. He asked a lot of questions about my dog and what I wanted to get out of the training. He explained to me the different types of training they do. I opted for a 3 week in house training with 3 at home sessions with David. I cant tell you how amazed and happy I am. Not only is Mowgli no longer suffering from leash aggression he's learned really important life saving stuff. The come and Sit/Stay commands are something I only dreamed of him being able to do. I also feel like I have had some good training too and feel confident with the tools that David has giving me that I can continue Mowglis training and create a safe and happy life for him. I reviewed many doggy day care sites on Yelp before I chose this one. The pictures and most of the comments were quite positive. I was on a tight schedule when I dropped off my puppy and called ahead, only to be asked to come in a little later. Before I got there I accidentally put the wrong address in my GPS and ended up at another doggy day care which I was instantly impressed with. I should have asked that day care if I could have left my dog with them but decided to go with this place, as I already made a reservation and they already had the shot records from my vet. As soon as I arrived at the place I found it extremely difficult to get in. You have to wait at the gate until they have time to buzz you in. I'm not sure of the purpose of this secured entrance as you still have to walk thru 2 more gates plus the front door to gain access. As soon as I entered I immediately smelled pet urine and the place was not clean. The staff was also not too friendly, like the other place I just left. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to go back to the other place because I was already running late for work. They took my dog/child to the back where I ASSUMED he would be instantly in day care and playing with other puppies. Before I left I asked to see a tour of the facility. They reluctantly opened one door and let me look in there, and that was it. All I saw were caged dog runs/kennels and smaller kennels (where you would potty train a puppy). I didn't see my dog in there but saw many others, mostly barking, and seemed scared. The lady, Jenny, explained to me that they rotate the dogs every couple hours into the play areas with other dogs and will send video to me. When I picked up my dog he couldn't wait to leave. He still had so much energy, like he was stuck in a kennel all day. It turns out that he was. I told Jenny when I picked him up that I never received a video like she said. She told me it takes a few days before they will introduce new dogs to other dogs and let them play in the play areas/aka....doggy day care. I was not a happy camper. When I dropped him off in the morning she bragged of the dog to staff ratio and how low it is. I'm not sure how important that is if the dogs are going to be in a kennel all day. I felt terrible for leaving my child there for one second, let alone 5 hours. I was in Burbank for 3 weeks, traveling for work, and really needed peace of mind while leaving my baby in the hands of others. Had I known Rukkus (my baby) was going to be in a kennel ALL day I would have left him in my hotel room. At least he would have had a soft bed and sofa to lay on and not be stressed out by constant barking of other dogs, and without any play. When I looked at the ONE room they let me look in to, I felt like I was back at the county pound, which is where he was adopted. I'm so grateful I accidentally found the other doggy day care, Pet Rush Inn, one block away. The facility was incredibly clean, I got a FULL tour of their facility, and the owner, Rene, was incredible! Rukkus always couldn't wait to go there and was so excited to get out of the car and greet Rene. If I were you, and loved your dog (as I imagine most people do who spend the time and money on doggy day care), I would NOT take your dog to Jenny and her facility, but would go one block over and take him/her to Rene at Pet Rush Inn. read more

I've worked in the pet industry for 6 years and have high expectations when it comes to training techniques and customer service, so I do my research. It should go without saying, that any dog will be treated for kennel visits BEFORE they are boarded to avoid Kennel Cough or other common issues associated with boarding dogs (very similar to sending vaccinated children to school). So please check with your veterinarian for the best suggestions. I discovered The Blue Dog Ranch by searching the internet and then confirming their reputation with my veterinarian. The first time I met David and his team, they were very patient and answered all my questions. They explained to me that they work in a positive reinforcement environment with the animals and will take great care never to force an animal to act against its will. I thought that was interesting and appreciated the care and respect the staff and David have for the animals. David explained to me that by allowing the dog to fully embrace its safety and to make choices consistently on its own the impact will be more dramatic. The training can take longer than expected because it goes at the pace of the dog, but the result is a lifelong positively reinforced affect. I enrolled my dog, Manny, in the extended 3 week+ training program. Manny is a rescue dog from the LA County Animal Services and I got him about 3 years ago. I have no idea what his background is, but he has definitely had some challenges and displayed frequent anxiety. I have been a dog owner my entire life and have successfully trained about 5 dogs. I figured I could train Manny as well. I was wrong. When I dropped Manny off the for the training, I initially felt very nervous. I didn't know if Manny would take to the training. I didn't know what to expect and, frankly, I had a very low expectation of the end result given Manny's history. After a few weeks of time with David, I was invited to come visit Manny and to begin my portion of the training. I had several personal sessions with David and Manny where David literally transferred his skills of dog management to me. If I follow the instruction he gave me exactly, there is virtually no way I can fail in keeping Manny on track to life long success. When I took Manny to The Blue Dog Ranch, he was a great dog with confidence issues who didn't know what to do with himself when he felt anxious. When he was given back to me, Manny is now a confident dog who enjoys his training sessions more than his free time. David Roe trained our pit mix for over 3 weeks and did an amazing job with him. He's thorough, methodical and his training just works. You must follow through and continue training after your dog comes home to really make his work worthwhile. This five star review is long overdue! The BDR daycare and boarding help support the Pacific Coast Dog Rescue, all founded by David Roe. David's all-positive dog training also helps support the rescue. That says so much about how much they love dogs! My dog has been going to their daycare since he was 4 months old and he is NOW 8 years old! I can tell that he is STILL very happy to go because he gets excited as I am exiting the offramp to drop him off in the morning and he is exhausted when I pick him up in the evening. He promptly goes right to sleep on the ride home. I see other dogs being dropped off and picked up and they all look very happy and excited. That speaks volumes of how safe the dogs feel there. The staff treat my dog very well, maybe even spoil him!! :) I can tell he loves everyone there. He is always well looked after and kept clean. He even smells nicer when I pick him up! The dogs are rotated to different groups so my dog has many buddies. The dog groups are intimate, about 6 dogs or less which I feel is the perfect size. I once took him to another daycare in Burbank and there were so many dogs - 20 or more that just followed the staff around like sheep following a herder. My dog did not like that environment. I watched him as he stayed away from the herd and walked the perimeter of the fence looking for a way out. The Blue Dog Ranch is AWESOME. After boarding my 10 year old dog Sawyer at the vet, I was not happy with the condition of my dog after picking him up from there. He was skinny, depressed and had major separation anxiety. So, a friend recommended the Blue Dog Ranch, which not only provides boarding but also training, grooming and daycare. THIS PLACE ROCKS. I love the staff, especially how they treat the animals. They are well cared for and it is like my dog is going to a spa instead of a small crowded kennel like at the vet. My dog, who normally is very skittish about being left to board, runs into the ranch and isn't nervous or scared. He loves it there, and the staff is very considerate of each dog's needs. Our English Sheepdog LOVED Blue Dog Ranch. When we picked him up he was happy and exhausted all in one. He had a blast AND he looked great. We paid extra for him to be bathed and the groomer went above and beyond our expectations! Chewie is a 95lb sheepdog with lots of hair and he was fluffy and smelling awesome!!!! We had never boarded our dog before so I was a bit nervous as I went looking for not only a great place but something we could afford. As soon as I spoke with Teresa on the phone I knew Chewie would be at home here and that I would feel secure as we went away for a few days. I was right! I LOVE THIS PLACE!! I recently boarded a rescue dog named "Ginger" at Blue Dog Ranch and I had a great experience! Until I found a permanent home for Ginger, I boarded her for 2 weeks. Ginger was neglected/abused by her former owners and had been through a lot. The staff knew this and treated her like a princess! Everyone was so nice to her. I visited her every day for a walk and a car ride... when it was time to hand her back over to the staff she willingly and happily went every time! that says a lot. I could tell that they were just as caring and conscientious with other people's dogs. The place is clean, tidy, and smells good as well! I would recommend this place to anyone. I rescued a boxer who turned out to be a total neurotic mess. A few months after I brought him home his fear and anxiety turned into aggression towards strangers. At my wits end, and tired of my friends telling me to "just put him down" I was referred to David Roe. From the first time I met with David, I was impressed with his approach. He was very calm and patient with my dog, and was very good at explaining my dog's behavior in a way that made sense. He listened when I explained how "delicate" my dog was and went out of his way not to set him off. Finally! I chose to send my dog to stay with David (Boot Camp) since his issues were so severe. The next time I saw my dog, he was a changed man! My dog, who tried to eat David's arm off the first time he met him, was now very fond of his new buddy. I spent most of that first session picking my jaw up off the ground. I could not believe what David had accomplished in a few weeks time. My dog has been home now for about a month, and while we still have a lot of work to do, he now has the foundation he needs to overcome his issues. Anyone with a really difficult dog needs to understand that David is amazing at what he does, but your dog won't be perfect and stay that way forever after the training is over. You have to be in it for the long haul; and it is hard work! MY FAVORITE THINGS ABOUT DAVID ROE: 1. The amount of support I have received from David after my dog came home from training is amazing! He has made his time very available to me to make sure that all our hard work (his, mine and the dog's) does not go out the window. He is always very positive and encouraging, which is so great to hear when I am frustrated with setbacks...and you will have setbacks. 2. My dog absolutely loves David. For a dog so terrified of the outside world, the fact that he interacts so well with David means a lot to me. And on the flip side, seeing David handle my dog, you can tell he really cares about these animals and wants them to thrive. I struggled to make the right decision on a trainer. I can say now that I have no regrets, I know I made the right choice by choosing to work with David. read more

My dog, Riley, a brown lab, has separation anxiety so whenever my husband and I travel, we have to take him to leaving him at a boarding facility. We went to Blue Dog on the high recommendation of a good friend and we were not disappointed. We dropped him off while we went to Hawaii for our wedding anniversary. The staff are just wonderful and friendly and really love dogs. And when we picked him up, he was happy as could be. And we know he had a wonderful time because he was tired for the next 2 days! The only negative is their pick up policy. You have to pick your dog up by 10am or you are charged for another night of boarding. Since we live about 30 minutes from Burbank, 10am is a bit early for us. But since Riley loved it, we'll definitely be back! Thanks Blue Dog! read more

I will definitely leave my dog here again in the future. The place was clean and well maintained. I felt like the staff was competent and cared for the animals, but not in a frou frou sort of way. I like when people at boarding places make over my dog, but I hate when they make my dog excited and obnoxious by squealing at him - these guys got it right. My dog was shy and hid behind me, so there was no reinforcement of that behavior (since it only makes the dog think being afraid is the correct response), which I appreciated. I haven't had my dog too long, and so I wasn't sure how he would do with other dogs in the daycare, but they assured me that he would be slowly introduced and monitored. When I went to pick him up he was in the play area frolicking with the other dogs. The only reason I didn't give five stars is because I thought the place was a little hard to find and didn't have any big signs to direct you or say you had made it to your destination. My GPS took me to the wrong side of the loop, and there are two other dog facilities on that same street, so I wasn't sure which one was it. They didn't have any big signs out in front, so finally I decided to go for a little walk and try to see into all the buildings. The last one I came to had a teeny tiny sign that said to enter blue dog ranch on the other side of the loop. When I got to the other side of the loop, there was another teeny tiny sign and a call box - but no instructions on the call box - not that an idiot couldn't figure it out, but still, I felt like there should have been a big sign saying 'blue dog ranch this way!' or something. And I also took that last star off because Whenever I tried to call, either to make sure his meds were being given or to find out when dropoff/pick up hrs were, no one answered. I didn't leave a message. The only thing that could improve the experience would be a big sign and maybe a more detailed message on the machine. I didn't think this was expensive at all! For the type of facility it is it's just right! My parents board their dog in a traditional cage kennel or at the vet's office, and it's the same price and not as nice. My dog was clean (even though I didn't ask for him to be bathed), which was surprising since I almost always have to wash my dog right away after returning from other facilities. He was also happy and seemed relaxed and ready to go home. This will definitely be a repeat place! read more

I did not want to have to surrender her back to the shelter where I got her, but that's what I ended up doing. They recommended David Roe and Blue Dog Ranch. David and the staff at Blue Dog Ranch are absolutely amazing! I have a chocolate lab named Murphy with aggression issues and I needed to go away for a week and I had to have him boarded. After calling several places, David was the first one I found who was willing to take Murphy at all and do some training with him at the same time as being boarded. I'd like to review 2 things about the place and about David: 1. The facilities - very clean and organized with friendly knowledgeable staff. There are several separate areas outside where doggies can run and play. There is shade, toys, beds, houses, and a splash pool. The kennels are clean and large. They feed healthy treats and food. They are flexible with schedules, and really honestly care. 2. The training - David is very serious when it comes to aggression issues, as any good trainer should be, and said he would take Murphy for the 7 days for me and do some training (I really didn't have any other options!) but he was honest and said that 7 days wasn't going to be a life changer. He didn't push the longer training time on me at all, which I appreciated because my budget couldn't afford it. David cares so much about animals and their owners and really stresses that the owners need to be educated and "trained" even more than the pets do. David was so generous with me and because of his big heart I got Murphy back a new dog, and he changed me as well! We can't thank you enough David! We refer all our friends to you! read more

I've been taking my 115 pound baby, Herman, to Blue Dog for close to 5 years. I loved them even at their old location (around the corner), but their new location is even better - there's a fantastic outside play area with a pool (you can see pics on their website). The staff is helpful and professional - most of all "T", the office manager. They really care about the animals and they learn each one's personality - likes and dislikes. For example, they noticed that my dog wanted to be with the people more than the other dogs, so he spent a lot of time in the office area with the staff. There were a couple of other dogs he did show interest in and they let them have their own play time. What I love the most is that when I pick my dog up, he looks like he's had a great time. It really alleviates parental guilt for leaving him (those rare times that we go on vacation). The last time I picked him up, he saw me and made a mad dash into the pool for one last dip. So goofy! Definitely worth the price which, actually, isn't bad for L.A. You won't regret it. Blue Dog Rocks! read more

I rescued my dog, Stevie Nicks from Pacific Coast Dog Rescue right there at Blue Dog Ranch. She worked with David Roe who is an excellent trainer!! So it was great to know that I could bring my dog back there for Doggie Day Care since she was already familiar with the staff. My dog gets scared easily and the staff there is so kind and accommodating with her. Stevie Nicks enjoys going which makes it a lot easier when I drop her off in the morning. We just moved 3,000 miles away from all of our family and friends in Vermont, and we needed a place that we could trust our Boxer, Porter at when we have to travel. Thank god we have found Porter's home away from home....This place leaves me feeling at ease when we leave our guy, Porter, there... Whether it's daycare or boarding for a few days, we know we can trust them because Porter always comes home happy, tired, unsmelly, and healthy!! He also LOVES going here... he can tell where we are going, even when we are a mile away... he gets suuuuper excited and starts wiggling like crazy when he gets into the office to see everyone. The only cons about this place are the location (it's not their fault though that we moved away from Burbank), the hours (I think they are 8am to 5:30... not very accomodating when you work from 8-5). The people are definitely friendly, and I know they are busy, but I would like to hear a little more about how Porters stay was... who he played with, what he did during the day, etc. (I've gotten better reports at other dog daycares we've been to)... BUT, as you can see... this place is getting 5 stars, because they do their job extremely well... which is take care of Porter when we have to leave, or play out all of his energy when he just has too much... The most important part of this place is that Porter always has a good time here, he is safe, and has lots of play time. The facility is also FABULOUS, with a large outside play area and a pool... The runs (very large kennels) where they stay at night are also really nice. They even have heated cement floors to make their stay even more comfortable. Not only is Blue Dog Ranch as good as it gets, but the people who make BDR as good as it is, are as good as it gets themselves. In an industry bloated with flakes and con artists, well-meaning failures and misguided celebrity dog lovers, BDR stands out as a sane and successful oasis, existing to help dogs, their owners and caretakers to lead fulfilling, loving and healthy lives. I was fortunate enough to find BDR when I needed help with a feral pit-bull/cattle dog mix I found tied to a fence with an electrical extension chord. I was able to get the dog physically healthy, but when his energy returned, he was too much for me too handle. I was not experienced enough to teach him what he needed to know. David Roe was able to turn this dog, the Bean, into a model canine citizen that any dog owner would be proud to call her own. His methods are caring and realistic for both dog and owner and the BDR facility is top-knotch. BDR's compassion for dogs seems to be the driving force behind all their good work. I would recommend Blue Dog Ranch to any one in need of boarding, obedience training or dealing with problemed canine behavior. I first brought my 2 year old male Boxer "Buster" here for day care. I liked that they offer smaller play groups, customized to your dog's size & temperament. When I started a new full time job, he started to have some behavioral issues. I called David, the owner and trainer at Blue Dog, and described the problems. He said he could help, I asked for some references, which David provided, and they were all glowing. So I signed Buster up for the 3-week "boot camp" training program. It is pricey, but comparable with other places. It was tough to be away from my boy for so long, but when David brought him back - Holly Cow! He was a changed dog! So much calmer, and more obedient. If you have Boxer, you know how high strung they can be. Friends who only met my dog before the training are amazed at how well-behaved he is now! The key to the difference, as David will tell you, is to be consistent with the commands and routine when your dog returns home. So for training, it was definitely a 5 star experience! It is now nearly 1 year later and Buster is doing great, and getting better al the time. But it doesn't stop there. I bring him to Blue Dog 2 -3 times a week for day care. Since he was trained there, they handlers all reinforce the training during his visits. Staffers like Bobby Sue and Belinda show him so much love - they always give me a full report on his day, what fun they had, etc. Just seeing his little tail wag with anticipation win we walk up to the gate of Blue Dog is proof enough for me that he loves the place. Once we get inside, he bounds with joy to get to Bobby Sue! The staff clearly all love dogs, and care very deeply for their welfare. I'm so grateful to have found Blue Dog Ranch! read more

I brought my dog here twice 3 years ago. The staff was very friendly and understanding. My dog seemed to enjoy herself in their provided pool...however she did have a scratched and discolored nose when I picked her up soon after coming home from vacation the last time. The staff did not even seem to notice as they didn't point it out to me. Just recently I decided to board my dog here again. WOW has the staff changed! I called with my concerns over her nose last time (I just wanted them to be aware that she was probably scratching her nose on the crate there) and I asked several questions. I called again to ask more detailed questions like: may I bring a bone for her or a toy...etc. Bobby Sue (yeh i'm calling you out) was incredibly rude! she called back "accusing" me of asking the same questions over and over again...saying that i keep asking because my dog must have anxiety and so i need to sign a special waiver. Ummmm yeh you make us sign that when we board our dog! and she had the nerve to psychoanalyze me about why im asking the "same questions"...which they weren't! and even if they were the same questions..hey!...im paying you!...i can ask the same questions a million times if i want to! She said she had to take an "executive desicion"....yeh you do that. I get that she was trying to "protect the business" but there is no need to be so rude...and funny how it had the opposite effect for her. Calling back to complain the rest of her staff was rude as well...putting me on hold without saying so and passing on the phone to Bobby sue..who was exactly the person I didn't want to talk to again! Bobby sue...thinking of herself as such a pro...she told me the worker before (who was so friendly btw) was fired and she took her job...yeh really professional bobby! Do yourselves a favor and take your dog to a nicer place...one where the staff doesn't analyze your every move. read more

The staff is amazing. The office staff are very friendly and have helped us many times. We rescued a Lab/Terrior mix who has extremely high energy. She was out of control. We turned to David and his Boot Camp for help. We were a little worried about sending her away since we did not know much about David or his organization. Also, my wife was worried because she would not be able to visit our dog during the Boot Camp. But, the results were amazing. Our hyper out of control dog came back as a focused dog that would obey commands. You still have to do the home work once your dog gets back in order for the changes to become permanent. But, the foundation is there. It truly meant the difference between our dog being able to stay with us and having to give her up. David has always been available to us and has come to the house several times since to help with problems that popped up. He really does want your dog to be successful and will work until that happens. Kona has been back several times for Day Care and is always excited to see David and the Blue Dog crew. We had David visit our home for in-home training and both visits were awesome. We ultimately decided to board our dog with him at the Ranch because our stray rescue's anxiety was beyond something that amatuers like us could work with. The transformation was incredible. We got updates as needed from David and he continues to support us months after the dog rejoined our house. We are so grateful. Someone did call me after my review. We did take our dog into the vet and verified she had kennel cough. We have been lucky for many years with boarding facilities. We board on an average of 2-3 times a year with various places around Glendale/Burbank area. Maybe with her almost turning 9 years old, her younger immune system can tolerate more. Who knows, right? Just be aware there is always a first time. read more
