We have been taking our black lab here for about two years now for boarding and they are always so great. My husband and I travel quite a bit and it's so nice to know we have a safe place to leave our dog while we are on our travels. Destiny is always very responsive and they are able to take Tucker even on a very last minute notice. They always send pictures of him playing in the yard and you can also ask for updates throughout the stay. They are also one of the most affordable overnight kennels in the LA area. This is a much-delayed review for Blue Dog Ranch. We have boarded our dog at the ranch, have used Darian's board and train services, as well as had him come to our house for at-home training here. Each experience has been phenomenal. I have nothing but a glowing review for this wonderful company. We have a rescue lab mix who is reactive to other dogs, and they provide a calm space for her to be around humans, but not dogs. She still gets to play in the yard and have fun while boarding there. I just picked her up from a brief board and train session while we were away and she's calm, grounded, happy, and at ease. I'm very grateful to have this place where I know our dog is safe, well taken care of, and cared for. It makes leaving her when we travel so much easier. Darian and his team truly LOVE dogs and it shows in how they connect with them. Darian is also a gifted dog trainer and wonderful teacher of humans. He doesn't just train the dog, he teaches the dog's humans how to continue and build on what he's started - and that makes all the difference. I came to Darian and Destiny (Blue Dog Ranch) needing help. My dog is a rescue and when I got her I didn't realize how reactive she was. In addition, I didn't realize how difficult it would be to manage her reactivity. I tried training on my own for two years and while she wasn't getting any worse, she wasn't getting any better. She was afraid to go into shops- pet shops, coffee shops, anything with a threshold. She could not be in public because noises and people scared her and I needed help navigating that with her because everything I tried to do to make her more comfortable in these situations failed. I needed the help of someone with more experience, someone who could help Scully one on one. Finding Darian and Destiny was a gift. They've given her so much attention to detail and have helped me communicate with my dog. They've helped me with breaking the hyper focus my dog had on other animals and triggers so that I could get her focused back on me. There continues to be support throughout our training even while my dog is now out of their daily care. Darian has been willing to come out and help secure situations where I may need help making my dog feel comfortable. We have boarded our dogs here before and had noticed in the past that they were very frighten of water and the hose. We couldnt put two and two together at the time. Blue Dog Ranch offered free baths for every stay. The dogs have been getting abused with the hose and water. We requested that our dogs no longer get any baths. When we picked up our dogs this last time the medications were not given to them. My dogs smelled very bad. They must of been kept in a filthy environment. My dogs had pooped on their paws and on their fur. The smell was so strong of pee. Now it makes sense why the dogs always received free baths in the past. This place neglects and abuses dogs. Let me first start out by saying, i have used blue dog ranch for boarding AND training. i have a french bulldog that has some fear aggression issues.. he's super sweet but def does not do well in most boarding environments. about 7 years ago i started boarding him at blue dog ranch because of their unique approach to overnight boarding. They dont just throw a bunch of dogs together all day and let things happen. they care about each dog and individually cater to it's needs. They give them a big kennel space, and alone time (or playtime up to 3 dogs who they know will get along) multiple times a day. they are the ONLY place i trust leaving him. he always comes back happy and healthy! a couple months ago i got a new puppy, this posed a threat to my older guy and i sent them both for the long term/overnight training program that blue dog ranch provides. Darian and David gave such good care to them, kept in touch with me, Destiny sent me pictures and videos through-out, and now i get compliments all the time how well trained my dogs are. lastly, i will say - another great thing i love about this place is that they are KIND, respectful, and all of them are taught dog training! (unlike just a bunch of high school aged kids who are looking after your dogs at some other kennels). so your pets are in good hands. i recommend them to anyone! read more

After multiple different trainers, we finally came across Blue Dog Ranch, and we couldn't be happier with the work that they've done with our dog Jasper. I think dogs' issues can be as individual as humans', and our dog is no different. He has a lot of strengths but also some definite issues (reactive to other dogs, in particular). David at Blue Dog Ranch was the first trainer we came across who took the time to listen to our stories and think about how to approach Jasper's unique behavior. We left Jasper at the ranch, and how he behaves has noticeably improved ever since. David also took the time to come to our home and work on transferring some of the training skills and knowledge to us. Blue Dog Ranch has been an absolute lifesaver, right from the start. We adopted a dog from the LA County shelter where my husband volunteers, but ended up dealing with a housing issue about 3 days into new dog ownership. Although we thankfully already had a new place secured, we would not be able to move into the new place for another 8 months. That meant that we needed to find long-term boarding for our recently-adopted dog until we could move into the new place. We were desperate. Our dog is a 1.5 year old pit mix with some history of behavioral issues (with other dogs) that we didn't have time to work on, so we were worried about how that would impact trying to find a facility. We called every dog boarding that we could find and they either didn't respond to us or were exorbitantly expensive or would have our dog isolated in a kennel all day. Blue Dog really saved us. Destiny responded to my inquiry about long-term boarding the same day; we spoke on the phone and she assured me that they have experience both with long-term boarding as well as managing dogs with some behavioral issues. That has all borne out! We have boarded our dog there for months, visiting her as much as we could (Blue Dog is incredibly good about scheduling visits with us) while waiting for the time when we could move into our new space. About 3 months ago, towards the end of the boarding, we opted in to their board-and-train dog-training program. The difference we've seen in our dog has been incredible. Darian has really taken the time to get to know our wonderfully stubborn dog and instilled in her behaviors that allow her to be able to navigate the world without incident. She used to be reactive to dogs when we took her on walks, but they have worked with her to reduce the amount of reactivity on the leash! She is so much better at following commands and is so much better equipped to handle any situation we may encounter. We are so genuinely appreciative of all the time and effort they've put in to working with our dog and sorting out her behavioral problems. She is stubborn, but they haven't let that deter them or put any less effort into training her. Destiny is so nice; she's prompt with updates and pictures. Destiny and Darien are wonderful hosts. I received either photos or videos from them every other day. My dog had never been boarded before so I was really nervous. He also wasn't well socialized. They slowly introduced him to 1 dog then 2 in the end he happily played with 3 other dogs at once and did really well. Blue Dog is clean and well kept. Long review coming with lots of praise.... I have not stopped recommending Darian at Blue Dog to everyone I know with a dog. He has completely changed my and my dog Betty's lives for the BETTER. I adopted my now 4.5-year-old pitbull terrier, Betty, from the shelter 2 years ago and she immediately showed signs of reactivity and aggression towards dogs, mailmen, men in general, skateboarders, bicyclists, neighbors, etc, no socialization skills with dogs AT ALL. She had never met a dog with me because I knew she would probably kill it. I went to SO many trainers and training sessions and have cried so many tears over this dog, because I love her and she's so sweet, but I was at the end of my rope. I felt like I had tried everything, and nothing was working. I felt isolated and like no one would ever be able to help us. She's loves me, loves my friends, is so great inside my apartment, but when she was outside, she was at war with anything and everything; it was unmanageable (pulling, lunging at other dogs, barking/screaming (if you're a pittie owner, you know about the screaming/yelping). My vet prescribed anxiety meds and that BARELY curtailed Betty's anxiety because it wasn't addressing the root of her issues. I was referred to Darian by another person who had a reactive pitbull and after talking and meeting with Darian, felt like this was the opportunity I needed to help Betty (and me!!!). I aligned with everything he talked about (all positive reinforcement and hammering home basic commands over and over, giving her structure). Betty was at the facility for 3 weeks, training every day, Destiny (who's also amazing) sent me pictures, videos, and both of them were extremely communicative with me. I expressed all my anxieties and they were both so comforting and helped me put a plan together for Betty and my future. After 3 weeks, I went to the facility a few times to train with Betty and Darian. And then he started bringing Betty to my place for training sessions. Betty is now back at my place and we work every day on everything Darian taught us. During Betty's stay, they had her doing training at Home Depot across the street, short (successful!) offleash interactions with another dog at the facility, and she is now so much more focused and CALM at my place. She's not on her anxiety meds anymore. It's really like I have a different dog in terms of her reactivity. Another thing that no other trainer / facility offered, was basically lifetime help lol. Every other place I went to would do a session, and then be like "Okay, off you go, good luck, bye." Darian cares so much about what he does and wants you and your relationship with your dog to be successful. He has continually reassured me that he is always available for Betty and I. I'm still bringing her for daycare and we're still doing sessions here and there because whatever traumatized Betty as a younger dog, will take a while to heal, and the training never stops. I'm honestly tearing up as I'm writing this lol, because to know that someone is there to help us whenever we need is HUGE. And to note, before I first called, I had seen the unfortunate review about a dog that had passed at their facility and they were completely transparent with me about what had happened. It sounded like an isolated incident with a Frenchie. Separately, Darian also said he took over the Ranch from a prior guy (David) who is no longer involved with the place. So their website is not accurate with the various trainers/people they list but when you go visit the Ranch, Darian will intro you to everyone working there! My husband and I adopted a wonderful pit mix from the South LA shelter and brought her home before encountering a housing issue, which meant that we couldn't keep her with us. We contacted a number of boarding facilities and every response, if they responded at all, was hesitant, non-committal, and/or exorbitantly expensive without the care needed for a shelter dog in a new place. We were almost at a breaking point before we contacted Blue Dog Ranch and immediately received a response from them. We set up a call and spoke with Destiny who assured us that they were able to take our dog on short notice (given she already had her shots) and set up long-term boarding at their facility. The fact that our dog had an uncertain history and some behavioral issues was not a problem. Blue Dog Ranch has been absolutely amazing with our shelter dog: she slowly gained weight and got healthier. We received regular updates and photos and whenever we visited our dog, we could see she was being so well cared for. After a while in their care, my husband and I decided to also opt in for dog training and the difference in our dog has been remarkable. She used to be leash aggressive and wary of strangers, but her tolerance for unexpected people, dogs, and noises has improved exponentially. I adopted a beautiful Border Collie mix breed dog from a shelter a few months ago, that was 3 years old and that had minimal training. Prior to me being recommended Blue Dog Ranch by another customer, I had been to 2 other trainers, whom really didn't understand or approach my dog's needs in the most successful way. I enrolled my dog (Otis) into Blue Dog Ranch's 21 Day training Program. Their incredible guarantee is that if your dog isn't ready to come home from training after 21days they would keep working with them at no extra charge. Otis did need a lot of work and was there for a week or so longer (all of which worked amazingly for me as I needed to have surgery, so the timing was great). The level of care and attention and love that the team at Blue Dog have for their doggy clientele is unmatched. They also help train US (the owners) into how to continue the training when the dogs come home. Darian and David have given me multiple lessons that are so helpful, and have made me understand what Otis needs in boundaries and direction and mental exercise. His behaviour on walks and his encounters with other dogs has improved exponentially. He also loves going there for boarding and daycare. He doesn't look back!! I couldn't recommend Blue Dog Ranch and the team there more highly. I will be a loyal customer for life. David Roe is a dependable and trustworthy trainer who helped us get results when we weren't able to dedicate the time and consistency that he was able to provide within the live-in program for my dog Winnie. He laid the groundwork for us to be able to control her excessive barking and acts of aggression towards other dogs. After the 3 weeks of the live-in program, he made sure that my boyfriend and I were trained on how to maintain her training in about 5 sessions. We saw for our own eyes how effective his training is. He establishes himself as the alpha without having to resort to any punishment or reprimanding. Positive reinforcement only! I brought a rescue dog to blue dog ranch and put him in David's 3 week training program. First I must tell you about this particular dog Taffy, she was frightened of everyone even her own shadow. So much that on the way to blue dog ranch while she was in the car I was a bit scared of her ( and she knew me). Through the training process the blue dog ranch staff was so accommodating giving me constant updates and videos of her progress. when I actually went to visit the property I was amazed how tranquil and beautiful this facility was. When I saw Taffy after those 3 weeks I didn't recognize her behavior she followed Davids commands as if he were her owner. She was totally a new dog. But the truth is is that Taffy probably always had the ability to be "that doh". But David was able to bring out the best in her. No longer frightened anymore. And to top it off he found her a home. There are not words enough to both complement and thank Dave for the outstanding job that he did with training Crosby as a few month old puppy to get ready to be the best canine companion I've enjoyed in a lifetime. I'm not sure if you might have called Crosby a ADHD dog and untrainable. We realized just a week or two after picking up the schnoodle from the breeder what a little monster he might turn out to be. He was into everything, bossing around our other pup, and making a mess everywhere to say the least. A real problem child. Thanks to scouring Yelp for the many services and some due dillegence we found and checked out BDR. Now, about 3 and 1/2 years later, Crosby has grown into a wonderful boy... with all the fine training he received apparent in his daily persona. Basics were all covered... walking on and off leash, not dashing out doors, waiting patiently for food, not jumping on people, respecting most of his toys, perfectly house trained, lying quietly on his little white mat when needed. Doing his job to protect the family, Crosby barks when a stranger is approaching outside the house to alert up.... but not much at all otherwise. Crosby by far has the best attitude of any of the dozen dogs I have owned since I was a child. He is my favorite. Dave saved Crosby from being sent back to the breeder and who knows what else. If you trust your puppy to him for a few weeks, follow his instructions, and have some patience you might also find Dave is a saint who might create a miracle and give you back a four legged pal that becomes an angel a few months later. read more

The team of Blue Dog Ranch is at the top of my list as place for training and kenneling my dogs. I've had many different dogs over the years, a lot of them were rescues either directly found abandoned in the streets or from the shelter. I have one particular dog that had been badly mistreated and he didn't trust new people, other dogs and new situations. After spending a lot of money (close to $20K) on training at other places in LA, including one-on-one lessons, David Roe and his team has had the most success with this particular dog who was 9 years old when he started training with David. I also have another dog, also 9 years old, though highly socialized was very willful. The organic and humane method used by David Roe and Darian Campbell to rehabilitate less than favorable behaviors has transformed both dogs to be more relaxed and manageable. David and Darian strive to teach the owners and the dogs to cohabitate more peacefully at home and outside their normal environment. As I write this review, I remember the numerous hours they spent with me and my dogs to facilitate a new way of seeing every problematic situation and change it so that the desired behaviors are nurtured with minimal stress. A little stress is normal for growth, as this is the catalyst for change. It's not magic. It is a method, and with consistent practice then the preferred behavior creates long-term effects in the nervous system of the dog. At other highly priced training & kenneling facilities, the management refused to give me and my dogs training at home though I offered to pay extra for this. They would refuse my idea flatly, and I took it for granted that this was the norm. However, this isn't the case at Blue Dog Ranch. As part of their "Live-In" program, they include the "In-home" training as part of the cost. That's amazing. There's a reason they include this in the program - that is the dog behaves according to the learned behavior in a specific locale. So, the desirable changes learned by the dog at the kennel also needs to be transferred to their home, while the training method needs to be learned and practiced by the owner-handler of the dog. I decided to board my dog here because I had an unexpected weekend trip. Jenny and Roxy were great as we were a bit nervous for my dog, Chowder's first time here. We boarded our dog here a while ago and while the facility looked clean and the location worked well for us, other things were different from the boarding that we were used to. On the first visit before boarding we noticed there was just one dog in the play area and the rest of the dogs were in the back in their kennels. At that time I didn't think that it was odd, but when we went back to drop off and pick up our dog - which was at different times mind you - the play areas had just one dog. This made us assume they keep their dogs in their cages most of the time. Also if you're used to watching your pet via video, they don't have one. Many places have them to allow owners the comfort of seeing their pets while away, but I also think it allows transparency to the business which maybe some don't want.... read more

After two dog trainers failed to help us with our Australian shepherd Harley's protective and defensive behaviors, David Roe and his team at Blue Dog were able to address these behaviors effectively and permanently. Unlike the other two trainers, who relied on electronic collars and correction-based training to intimidate or frighten the dog, David's training program was based on using training exercises to engage Harley, slow down her reactions, redirect her attention back to us, and build up her recall and general obedience. It has been transformative for both Harley and for us. David came to our house for an introduction session, and then we decided to board Harley with David in his 21 day program. This was a hard decision for us - we love Harley so much and didn't like the idea of leaving her at a facility. But our minds changed when we saw the impact even one training sessions with David had on Harley - she loved him, and she loved the training. 21 days later, David had us come by Blue Dog for a training session with Harley, and as soon as Harley came out - we could tell that the training had been effective. She was more relaxed, more focused, and less jumpy and anxious than we had ever seen her. David then took the time to do 5 sessions with us at our house, where he taught us the fundamentals of the training so that we can continue to have results with Harley. By the end of these 5 sessions, we knew the training routines well enough to implement them into our lives at home - to insure that all the benefits of David's training would continue now that she's back home. The results have been incredible. We can now have guests over to the house with Harley, and feel comfortable with Harley at the park. We have a training system that helps us with any issues that come up. We are so grateful to David and his team for helping us - and would strongly recommend David and Blue Dog Ranch to any owners who need help addressing behavioral issues like aggression or resource-guarding or general disobedience. I can't speak to the DayCare aspect of the facility - I just know that for our specific situation, David was the only trainer who could help us. read more

David and the whole team at Blue Dog are wonderful at giving the right tools, advice and training in order to help set up a successful and meaningful relationship between dog and owners. They offer several levels of training as well as boarding services. For us, the difference was night and day in the behavior of our puppy after putting him through the full 4 week training course and the personal attention given to train us in following through with what our pup had learned. We are always able to reach out and talk with David with regard to any further issues or clarification we may need in order to have a full and joyful relationship with our dog. Whenever our pup sees David on the occasional follow up visit he may make to help us out, our puppy can barely contain his excitement at seeing him. It is obvious our puppy respects and loves David and it is a testament to the training method he uses in order to help a dog learn how to behave and conduct itself properly. I had an urgent family trip to Hawaii and my usual dog sitter friend couldn't accommodate my timeframe so for the first time away for such long period I searched and discovered this place which turned out to be a place that another girlfriend highly recommended. I've had 2 wonderful experiences with BDR so far and feel it's high time to leave them a wonderful review. Besides the wonderful interactions we've had with all of the staff, my wife and I always feel at ease leaving our timid shelter terrier with them. Drop off is a cinch, handing our girl over to the receptionist. From the back, an attendant will come out and take my dog. From there, it's as simple as signing a thing or two and leaving. What's wonderful is how attentive they are to my own concerns while away. I've been able to email them to see how she's holding up, worried that she's homesick. But they're so engaging with her, she looks to be right at home in their care. Ultimately, Blue Dog Ranch has earned our business.
