I foster puppies often, many of them from troubled backgrounds, and I always have Melissa over for a consultation. I prefer her method of training--positive reinforcement--over others because often my fosters need to build confidence and establish base commands, not be reined in. She assesses the pup, we take it on a walk, and we come up with an action plan. I'm pretty good at training myself, but I do need brush-up sessions once in a while! She can intuit what your dog needs, how quickly he or she will learn, and even what can motivate him or her to follow queues. Our new rescue pup needed some help with feeling comfortable with physical therapy and stretches that were part of his recovery, as well as separation anxiety and walking on a leash. A few different trainers were recommended to us and I contacted 3 or 4, but Melissa stood out to me when she gave me a phone call to chat about Sammie's needs- that sealed the deal for me. She also gives a little discount if you purchase 3 or 4 home visits, so she was more affordable than the others. Sammie is responding so well (and quickly!) to the tips Melissa has given us, and we've only had 2 home visits. We also plan to sign up for a group glass, mostly to work on socialization with other dogs. On our second session, Melissa taught us all (Sammie, my husband, and me) how to walk together and 'heel' and I was amazed by how quickly Sammie caught on. He completely understands walking right next to us now, and our walks are so much more enjoyable! He's also doing much better with his stretches and when we leave the house. Melissa is fantastic! We have taken a beginner class, an off-leash hiking class, and a few privates (to go over very specific needs we have) with our dog, Fred, in the last 6 months. Melissa takes the time to talk to each person in class, goes over what is working for your pup and different approaches you can try. Fred used to be reactive to other dogs and people, had potty challenges.. when we first brought him home, we would attempt to train him but it would get so frustrating. I rescued a pound puppy who we *think* is going to get to be about 80 lbs. So this dog is going to have to be well behaved if he's ever to leave the house. Enter fabulous Melissa. After 7 weeks of training, my dog consistently sits, stays and comes when I call him - along with my favorite trick: drop it (He will spit out a sock on this command. Utter genius!). She seems to have studied the moves (what motion to make with your hand, where) that will help communicate to dogs what it is she wants them to do. It's amazing to watch. I wish I could say he doesn't ever pull on walks now - but we have made great strides. I'm sure my big, bouncy 6 month old puppy will grow into a respectful dog if we keep practicing what Melissa taught us. How do I know? We went to Big Boy for breakfast the other day my puppy (who is known for diving at dinner plates right on the table and trying to drink out of your glass) laid on the ground behind me, patiently waiting for the occasional dog treat. Some trainers just prefer working with the dogs but thats not actually that helpful. You really need someone to show you physically what to do, Melissa does that. She's great. When we rescued a puppy we signed up for one of Melissa's classes and are so happy we did! Originally Dr. Pepper was nervous around other dogs and barked non stop at them. He learned the basics of how to sit, lay down, stay, and roll over in class and still, two years later, does them on command.
