I'm told Blue Chip is known for its cookies: their chunky chocolate chip cookie is quite decadent and unhealthy (as all good cookies are). The egg sandwich makes it clear why they're not known for their sandwiches. To be fair, the multigrain bread is pretty great, and you really better like bread if you order their sandwiches because it's pretty much all bread: there's a thin layer of filling inside as if just to flavour the bread. Sandwich places are not so often pitiful: the egg salad itself, I do a way better one at home; I swear this had to be store bought in bulk. $7++. No wonder people pack lunches here. Service is certainly fine: you line up and place your order like any other quick-service café, and they did toast it nicely (on one side) for me. Overall, as a student organization operated outfit, you'd think they would try to offer better value for revenue-less students. I went here for a quick coffee before class but instead got someone's political agenda being shoved down my throat with their new "buy a (not-quite-forever chemical) plastic cup program". If they want to do something good for the planet what they need to do is HAVE MUGS and put in the labour like any other place to wash them, not push the problem on to the customer! Also, the cashier claimed it was easy to get your money back after using the (not-quite-forever chemical) plastic cup program but it involves a 5-10 minute process of getting an app, registering your private information, scanning the cup and waiting 1-2 weeks, then it's available for e-transfer. I'm not even exactly sure what that means but I guess you can then maybe transfer it to your favorite cashless app on your phone (yet another step). I also guess they hope you just forget the money is even there. I bet they're figuring on 50% of the people never even claiming their money since it's such a pain in the ass to get it. What a waste of time, battery life and mobile data. There are way better coffee shops in the area that do not try to push their warped and misguided big-brother-knows-best agendas on you just to sell you a coffee. read more

first visit back to ubc campus in 15 years or so. I went to the old SUB looking for blue chip and thankfully found it in the new SUB next door. Place is more modern and nicely decorated. People were friendly. I came hunting for the marbelous cookie and they still offered it. Tastes similar to how I remember, maybe a bit sweeter? But still good. It looked smaller though and of course is more expensive overall. Also got a cappuccino, it was fine. This is a university coffee shop, so lets be real, you're not going to go out of your way to come here. But if you're in the area, worth a stop by for a cookie. Esp for nostalgia's sake. read more

This review is solely for the cookies! More than 15 years ago, I found the best cookies in Vancouver from Blue Chip Cafe in the old SUB building. My favorite is the Marbelous cookie. Back then the cookie was huge and chunky (and cheap). They are delicious especially when they're still warm. Flash forward to my recent visit to the campus. I was so happy that they still keep Marbelous cookie on their short menu. The cookie menu seems to be slimmed down. Being nostalgic, I ordered 6 of them so I could enjoy it at home too. The cookie seemed to be slightly thinner but the taste was still the same! - Marbelous cookie: very decadent chocolaty cookie but the white chocolate center gave a sweetness to the cookie. The cookie was slightly crispy on the outside but chewy on the inside - Smarties: my kid's fave because it had lots of smarties pieces. The cookie was chewy. It was a bit too sweet for me. read more

Known for their freshly baked cookies, it's also a pretty good all-around cafe, although quality is a mixed bag depending on what you order. The great: most cookies, bagels and bagel sandwiches, date square. The good: muffins and loaves. The just okay: pre-made sandwiches and wraps, dessert bars besides the date square, butter mochi, and tiramisu. Do not recommend: sugar cookies or vegan cookie (but I think the vegan cookie has its fans so that might just be my taste). Aside from the cookies which are baked daily, many of the baked goods have been previously frozen, but they're fine as long as you don't get one that hasn't fully thawed (which has happened to me once). The coffee is more variable but generally pretty good, and I think the matcha latte is actually one of the best on campus (or at least the smoothest). Do not order an iced London fog/turmeric fog though - they tell you they can make it, but you will get a cold tea bag in watery milk, not a properly steeped iced tea latte. The students who work there are usually pretty friendly and the speed of service is reasonable even though the line gets long at lunchtime when school is in session. Like other AMS-owned outlets, you can not only bring your own drink cup but also bring your own food containers and save $.25 per item. read more

While Blue Chip is a full cafe with drinks, treats and eats, their #1 asset is their cookies. The BEST cookies you can find on UBC campus, to be exact. I've eaten my way around each of them and my favourites are the smartie cookie, coconut cookie, and vegan cookie (which is still surprisingly good!). My all time favourite was their white chocolate macadamia nut cookie but they discontinued it (petition to bring it back!?) Besides the cookies, they have great chai tea lattes and London fogs, and there are also table spaces to get some work done when there is space. I remember it being a guilty pleasure of soft, warm cookie that didn't break the wallet (especially for a frugal student like me). Feeling nostalgic, I came for a "throwback moment", but things just fell short. - There were only 3 types of cookies to choose from. We ordered the chocolate marbled flavour. - The cookie wasn't warm. It was extremely oily (left oil marks on the paper bag and your fingers) and overly sweet. My bf and I shared one cookie and neither of us wanted to finish the last few bites. If you have a sweet tooth, the cookies here are worth trying and affordable, but they're not as delicious as I remember. read more

Uppercase (or Blue Chip as it was known back in the day) just doesn't have the 'it' factor anymore. Honestly, no one is more shocked by this statement than me. I've always been a huge, huge fan of the cookies at Uppercase. I made the drive to UBC dozens of times a year (long after I graduated) just so I could buy a batch of Marbellous cookies to share with visiting friends and family. They would never fail to be amazed by how large and soft and crumbly and PERFECT these cookies were. Even the most serious foodies in my group (a very well travelled bunch) admitted that they had never tasted a cookie with such incredible texture and flavour. But alas! The last couple of times I went, the cookies have been small and stale and utterly terrible! At first I just thought I got a bad batch. But after a few months, it seems that the cookies aren't made the way they should be. They seem to make only one or two batches a day, and just leave them there (instead of making fresh cookies every hour, as they used to). The cookies have a hard crunch, and none of that soft crumble underneath (that made biting into these cookies so much fun).The generous portion of white choclate has been replaced by a miniscule, miserly piece (doled out by a penny pinching Scrooge McDuck no doubt.) And that's when they actually made the cookies at all. Many times I was told they didn't have any cookies. And when I asked when they would make the next batch (so I could go wait in my car) they said they may not make any more that day! Ridiculous! Especially when you consider that I came over several times on weekdays at 10:00am or 11:00am in the morning. It's not like I came at the end of the day expecting cookie miracles! The girl at the counter was friendly, and the service was great, which is why I've given them two stars. Now I don't know who is in charge of management and cookie preparation, but I am dismayed by the state of these cookies. The cookies are good, fresh, and well-portioned. Marbelous (tuxedo) and Chunky are lovely, usually with still-warm hunks of gooey chocolate. Croissant sandwiches are surprisingly good - always on a fresh croissant, with crisp lettuce and fresh ham and Swiss. Many of the Nest lunch options are disappointing but these always hit the spot. Coffee is blah. They're serving it as a cheap liquid pick-me-up to tired students, and aren't attempting to make Good Coffee. The bean supplier they use is not great and staff aren't really trained or expected to craft drinks well. Fine if you just want a quick cuppa and aren't picky, but if you're a Coffee Person, there's better stuff at JJBean, The Boulevard and Great Dane all within a short radius. read more

My All-time favourite cookie ever. It's big and chunky, with a crispy top but not-so-chewy middle. Absolutely marvelous!!!! This is truly a perfect cookie. My favourite is Brazil crunch and marbelous. I just tried the chocolate chip one and it definitely don't dissappoint. Best cookies at UBC! I used to come here every week after a lab because it was a good way for me to de stress/treat myself after a gruelling day of work. Their cookies are especially soft and chewy and you can bet that they don't skimp on the chocolate! My favourite is their marbellous cookies which is a dark chocolate cookie with a huge chunk of white chocolate that's perfectly oozy and melted in the middle. They also have chocolate chunk, java nut, smarties, vegan cookies that are also really good. I also enjoy their bagels in the morning; they have a gigantic selection of which I normally have a sundried tomato bagel with classic cream cheese. Price wise everything is reasonable with a cookie coming in at 2.50. Overall I would recommended this cafe to anyone who visits UBC!! read more

I'd already had a couple of cookies that day that were mediocre but my cousin insisted that this place on UBC's campus was amazing. So far I'd been a little underwhelmed with the food I'd had so far in Vancouver so I was skeptical. I saw their options and though they could have lit up their cookies to look more vibrant like they did their other pastries, it was a nice looking selection. We ended up going with the marbelous cookie which was a chocolate cookie base topped with white chocolate. I'd only recently learned to appreciate a chocolate cookie after having blank in Amsterdam. This cookie was so good! It was warm, soft, and melted in my mouth. This was the first thing I had worth telling people about food wise on this trip. Highly recommend it if you find yourself on campus in need of a sweet fix. read more

First, I like what Blue Chip cells. That's not the issue. This morning, I watched as the employee never removed his rubber gloves to work the register and take everyone's money with his gloved hands and then turn to prepare/touch the food. Does he not understand the purpose of those mandated gloves, that you are supposed to wear them to make food and take them off to deal with everything else, for example dirty money? Very frustrating that the management at Blue Chip doesn't properly train its employees and jeopardizes the health of UBC students. And it wasn't just today... Came here while visiting one of my friends who lives near UBC. These cookies are tall. I was lucky and I got in there right in the morning when they were warm. It was one of the few places at the time open around that area and I wasn't too smart with eating a heavy lunch so this was my only choice. Coffee wasn't too bad. I had it black with a few cookies. I used to grab cookies from here all the time, way back when I was a UBC student and this place was called "Blue Chip Cookies." It was the best part about UBC (and still is).. The cookies are delicious. The Marbelous and the Ranger are my favorite. I still dream of them sometimes - so delicious. Some people find the Marbelous too sweet but I really love sweet things. The Ranger makes you feel better about yourself because it looks healthy (but really isn't...) and you can tell yourself you're giving yourself something healthy.. Can't say much about their drink menu since I've only tried their London Fog Latte which was not bad. I wish I lived nearby so that I could have more of their cookies. This place was a lot better when it was Blue Chip and Bernoulli's. Today, I ordered a mocha and a bagel. My friend ordered a cookie. We waited forever for the bagels, which weren't melts or anything, just bagels. They forgot to give us the cookie. My mocha was not made properly and was set out with three other improperly made drinks. The manager came out and yelled at her staff while we were standing there. Yikes. Food's still fine. read more
