Would highly recommend the tin fish - we had the sardine loins which were really delicious - and the Half Chicken - which was super flavorful and I loved the black lentils. Bloomsday was one of the 27 bars that made the cut on USA Today's "Bars of the Year for 2024" list. My first question was what credibility does USA Today have when it comes to making a "Bars of the Year" list? USA Today not in the trenches like that smh. I lowkey rarely shazam songs anymore, so that holds weight with me idk. Playlist was hittin. Our waitress was super engaging and jawning with us, and was great at recommending the natural wines without being too serious. I honestly can't believe I didn't get her name cuz I really want to shout her out. For food we went with the Lemon Pepper Wings, Patatas Bravas, Wedge Salad, Dry-Aged Burger, and Steak Frites. Honestly, all the food for me was a solid 8/10. Really good food, but not great. Nothing blew me away. Although my girlfriend will be mad reading this because she LOVED her burger so I gotta shout that out. This glass of orange wine I had though... my goodness. It was the best glass of wine I've had in a MINUTE. It was a natural biodynamic wine from Swartland, South Africa. I came here with friends to pre-game before a concert and it is so cute! I love the color scheme and how the cafe looks like it's on a street in a storybook. The staff met us with smiles time we hit the door and we were seated quickly. We got there around happy hour time, so the place was filling up quickly. I started with a cocktail that was light and sweet. We tried some oysters and a seafood dip as appetizers. I ordered the lemon pepper wings and some potatoes as my entree. The wings were so big I couldn't finish them all but they were tasty. I followed things up with a glass of orange wine and loved it. Disappointing for a restaurant listed as a "wine bar". They did not have the bottles of wine listed on their menu. We asked if we could buy a bottle from their back room wine shop but were told they would charge a $30 corkage for a bottle from their on site wine shop. Huh? The bartender who came to our table & said they were the Sommelier offered 3 different reds they did have available. We picked a Pinot Noir which was average. They did not charge us a corkage fee. If they did we would have walked out at that point. On to the food, we ordered the trout & 1/2 chicken dishes. They were average. The space is quaint, more of a brunch place. The reviews were nice for brunch so we came in hungry hoping for good brunch food, but came disappointed... The appetizers were mainly canned goods ("conservas" as they called it), I thought they would at least spin it up a bit while serving in a restaurant, but they served straight out of the sardine can with a side of greens... definitely not worth the price. The potato hash was decent tasting, not the best looking, a bit too salty, but flavor was there. The mushroom sandwich was very mushy and not much flavor other than the earthy mushroom... One of my new favorite places in Philly, and all I did was sit and drink an iced chai at the bar on a beautiful Saturday morning. Their brunch program and menu is totally underrated (yes I do see the many other 5 star reviews...I more mean I hear about it less around town) and the space itself is completely gorgeous and well thought out. Bonus? They have a pastry and coffee window on Stamper. Bonus bonus? They have a wonderful wine shop that features natty wines from small producers and farms. Bonus bonus BONUS? The staff here is super down to earth, friendly, and the vibes are just very good. As you can imagine my chai was delightful. I love slow mornings walking around a new neighborhood and finding treasures. Every dish that came out of the kitchen looked SO good - especially the breakfast sandwich that comes on a massive brioche bun. Bloomsday's happy hour is only 4:30 - 6:00, which makes it a tough one to get to with time enough to enjoy it. But on a day I left work early I was able to stop by with a friend and try it out. The Dark 'N Stormy is one of my favorite cocktails, so I was happy to see it on the happy hour menu. I made sure I got a couple of those in before happy hour ended. For snacks, we started off with the house made chips and dip. It was OK. The dip was good but the chips a bit overcooked. We then shared both the burger and the bologna sandwich. The burger was good, but it was a smash burger slightly overcooked. It needed a 2nd patty to take it to the next level. As a big fan of bologna, I was very disappointed with the bologna sandwich. Brunch today was my second visit to Bloomsday, and it was every bit as delicious as my first. It was no accident that I ordered the same dish - quiche - as I had to validate it was really as amazing as I thought, on my first visit. It was. The quiche may be one of the best in the city, today's mushroom Gruyère was heavenly. It was extra creamy yet had the jiggle and light fluffy texture you expect to see in great quiche. The pastry crust of the quiche was flaky and tender....which brings me to my next dish. Following such a great dish, you would think the bar would have be pretty high....the raisin cinnamon swirl croissant vaulted over it. The pastries are in the 'Sweet' section of the menu; at a minimum, ask to see the pastry basket, which I did on both occasions. The croissant was layered and crisp, yet had a light caramelized glaze which gave this pastry a little sweet roll/sticky bun feature. It was delectable. I am angry. Angry at myself for waiting until now to enjoy Bloomsday! It's been on my to-try list for the last year and a half since moving back to the city. Now I mourn the delicious meals I never got to enjoy in that time. We sat outside on a gorgeous evening. We walked up and got a table before closing without a reservation (score!). Headhouse Square is delightful for dining outdoors. I enjoyed a draft riesling, and my husband enjoyed a vermouth flight. I tried a couple and even found one to my liking. I think we'll be back for more of those in the future. But the food...holy cow. The patatas bravas we shared were good. My mushroom sandwich is aptly named the "really frigging good mushroom sandwich." With mushrooms, broccoli rabe, and delicious cheese, it was a flavor explosion. My husband took one bite and instantly was jealous. That said, his panelle salad was also delicious. We marveled at the texture and flavor of the panelle. I make panelle/panisse at home, but never as good as this. Bloomsday exceeded my expectations. I will NOT let another year pass before my next visit. Last Saturday was our first time eating brunch at Bloomsday Café, and we loved it. Inside was cozy and cute, and looked so much like a Scandinavian lodge. Half of the menu was Spanish/Basque focused (i.e. the tinned fish and tapas), while the other half was more New American. My husband and I shared the Kickstarter Sandwich, Bravas, and the Agromar, Anchovy fillets in olive oil. The menu advertised "fluffy eggs" for the Kickstarter Sandwich, which I have to say, was INDEED fluffy and incredibly filling. Highly recommended for anyone who loves a good breakfast sandwich. The Bravas, or Patatas Bravas were nicely done too. Hot, crispy, and only $5. The Anchovy fillets tasted a little too salty for me, but they came straight out of a can, so nothing the kitchen can really do about it. I would love to try their other tinned fish offerings some time though. The selection of wines, cocktails and beers was extensive too. Can't believe it took us so long to find this gem of a place. For the simplicity of the menu the food could have had more flavor and excitement. We had the ham and cheese board, I got the chicken definitely from Esposito in SF which I love but lacked in delivery. My husband ordered the Ragù but they were out of the dish on what was not a busy Saturday at 8pm. For having 5 entree options they should be available on a non busy Saturday during peek hours Its not a big restaurant. Finally, our server spent most of her time chatting about vermouth among other things with the table next to us. While I love to see servers engage you need to know when to move as you usually have more than one table. We waited about 12-15min to place our drink order and spent most of our dinner listening to her chat with the table next to us. We were not the only two tables in her section, there is always a polite way to walk away from a conversation with a guest. I understand trying to make that money but there is a way to do it without sabotaging your other guest. Im sure brunch is better which is what I have heard. We still left a 40% tip as the cost of living is high. Will most likely not return but would be open to depending on dinner menu options. read more

This was my first time having a non-dessert Panna Cotta and this savory version was grit based with fresh tomatoes and popcorn, very bright and summery dish. The Dip was also good and the crusty bread was perfect Entrees: Summer Spaghetti, Rich Burger, and Potatas Bravas. The spaghetti is housemade and if you're looking for a lighter dish with a touch of tomato sauce instead of the typical red sauce bolognese Italian version that's a bit heavier (but equally delicious), this is for you. The service here was great, which I loved. Also another thing I loved about Bloomsday is the interior design. It was designed in a way to make you feel right at home with a fireplace near the entrance. Now let's talk about the food. Bravas- I kind of wished there were more seasoning like sea salt on it. Even though there were aioli & smoked pepper sauce on it.. it was kind of bland Salmon Gravlax- gin-cured wilded sockeye, garden cream cheese, pickled onion, radish, hash brown The hash brown tasted more like a crab cake? I wish they made it differently or added something to balance out the taste. Overall it was very stuffy & hard to finish. We stopped by Bloomsday for a late brunch with my in-laws while in the area. Our neighbors have spoke highly of Bloomsday for happy hour, so we figured it was worth a shot! We didn't have reservations, but we were able to snag a table for the 4 of us without issue. We were seated in the back area, which was a bit secluded from the rest of the restaurant and was a bit quieter, which we appreciated. However, if it was just my husband and I, I would have appreciated being in the main area to take in the whole vibe. I did also feel like our service was a touch compromised since we were a bit isolated, but it wasn't terrible (our coffees arrived pretty late / they maybe forgot about them). We got lattes, which were standard but hit the spot for a late morning pick me up. Even if they were delayed in arriving, they were still good. Their food menu has a good number of options, including both sweet and savory, but definitely a heavy focus on the savory options. I opted for the veggie breakfast sandwich, and my husband went for the kickstarter sandwich, and we split both between the 2 of us. The veggie sandwich was tasty - I really liked the veggie fritter patty and the pesto cream was a delightful touch. The kickstarter was good too - the tomato jam brought out the flavors in the house made sausage, and it had just the right amount of spice. The brioche bun encasing both sammies was fresh and light, a nice touch. My in-laws enjoyed their meals too! My friend and I came to Bloomsday for dinner and had a wonderful time! We split two cocktails at the recommendation of our waiter - the Petey's Cruiser (mezcal, Sfumato, maraschino, lime, and prosecco) and the Martinez (Eight Oaks old tom gin, Dumpster Juice vermut, and Amara). I especially liked the Petey's Cruiser - the mezcal gave it a great depth of flavor but the lime and prosecco kept it light! We split two appetizers as well - the Wine Pub Cheese Ball (house ricotta, nut granola, toast, and Philly Bee Co. spicy honey) and Castle Valley Mill Polenta Fries (with vegan green goddess and tahina). Both were excellent, but especially the cheese ball. For my entree, I got the Really Friggin' Good Mushroom Sandwich (Mycopolitan shrooms, 'Elsa Mae' cheese, candied tomato, broccoli rabe, and salad). It was amazing - the cheese especially was excellent and had an incredible flavor profile. For dessert, we split the 1/2 Pound Chocolate Chip Cookie. It was the perfect end to the meal! We brought home half of the cookie (and I also brought home half of my sandwich) which made for some great leftovers. The food was excellent, the service was great, and the ambiance was perfect!
