Huge bar, giant wall of liquor bottles, dim lighting, and a cool old-school vibe. I told the bartender that ordering a beer in a place like this felt like I was insulting him. He laughed and told me not to worry about it. The drink special was called "Naked and Famous," which honestly sounded like the perfect cocktail to order in honor of Jen. But then I spotted a dark beer on the menu that sounded too good to pass up. If you follow me, you know I'm slowly becoming a dark beer guy. I liked it a lot. The sandwich special was a cheesesteak. Sorry, I should've taken a picture of the menu. But I really enjoyed it, and for $18 it came with a mountain of seasoned fries, which feels like a bargain these days. Bomb Shell: the two people working absolutely crushed it. I don't know if they were understaffed or if Monday night got busier than expected, but they were working their tails off the entire time. Sassafras has been a consistently solid bar for me. I have been obsessed with their pisco sour and the drink comes equally as good each time I order it. The drink menu is extensive and well planned. I love the prices the most probably. The service is good but not super fast as they usually only have 1-2 people serving, so only go here if you have time to wait. The staff is always kind and accommodating. The food here is also very solid. The cheese steak and the burger are both delicious though the burger might take the #1 spot. They even had sweet potato waffle fries that were so good (I'm not a waffle fry person so I was fairly impressed). Sassafras is housed in a historic building from 1870, full of vintage charm. We visited two years ago for drinks and decided to return for a meal. Our bartender, who also served as our waiter, was excellent and made sure we were well taken care of. The pomegranate martini was perfectly balanced and refreshing. Usually I struggle to finish a meal at most places but holy cow, there was no way I couldn't not devour my whole double smash burger. Juicy, saucy, and just overall yummy. My counterpart got the Sassafras Burger and although they would never admit it (out loud) the sentiment stands. The bartenders mixed very nicely made and well presented cocktail. The music was a mix of jazz and other cool vibing music. They have live jazz so that would cool to see another time. what a cute spot!!! the decor was very festive :) romantic and cozy but very lovely with friends too. a group of 6 boys were seated at the table next to us. i walked in with a friend on wednesday around dinner time. our server said to sit "wherever you're comfortable" which i loved. moscow mule is SO good. it is sweeter and the flavor has more depth than other versions of this drink that i've tried. it uses a vanilla vodka! topped with club soda instead of ginger beer but has ginger press. really lovely. makes me want to try their take on other classics. they have fresh flowers on almost every table and a little candle. there are mirrors everywhere and a fake fireplace with a candle set it in. def come by if you're in the area! read more

Some of the best cocktails in Philly! They have something for everyone and every drink I've tried in the multiple times I've been here has been amazing. The bartenders can also make a custom drink for you depending on your preferences. The quality is amazing for the price. Can't stress enough how tasty, well balanced, and gorgeous the drinks are from Sassafras! I've also had the pleasure of having some snacks here and I'm a big fan of the cheese curds (the best), fries, and the pretzel is good too. The bar is beautiful with a decent amount of seating (but this is overall a small spot). There are also tables in the back and along the side of the bar area. Whenever I've come with a small group we have been able to find seating, even on Friday or Saturday nights. On week nights, you will probably be able to snag a table for a larger group - I think the most I've been with is 6 people including myself. Horrible horrible bartender last night - rude and just uncalled for - said I yelled at him after I said "excuse me" when trying to get our check (he was about 3 feed from me) - I asked my friend did I yell she said no way- this was after a night of horrible service - not only did he act like it was a big deal to ask for a food menu (after he just took it away from my friend) but we were still eating the french fries and he came and just took everything away from us not even asking if we were done - after he accused me of yelling at him he actually just tossed the electronic check towards us. When we paid the bill I told him I was not yelling - but anyone who has been at Sass knows when it is crowded that the acoustics are those that sometimes one has to use a higher voice even to speak to someone next to them (not complaining at all about that) so the bartender should have realized that was what was happening and in fact I told him that when we paid our check and also I told him he had no right in yelling at me and it was reflected in his tip. He was so busy trying to impress people with acting like Tom Cruise/Michael Caine in Cocktail that he forgot the basics about bartending - my friend and I were both at times in our lives have been in the service industry and bartending so we realize the pros and cons in dealing with the public - but we were in no way being rude or disrespectful to him - read more

Had a hot date at Sassafras Bar this past weekend and it did not disappoint in the slightest. The bar and dining area is intimate so be prepared to possibly wait a bit to be seated. Found a spot at the bar and had the coolest bartender ever. The drink menu is SUPERB.
