We came to Good King Tavern an hour before our res because we are a couple psychopaths, and they said they couldn't seat us but have a cute wine bar upstairs if we wanted to kill some time. Reasonable. We walked upstairs into the cutest little dimly lit romantic wine bar I've ever seen. That was a lot of descriptors, but I felt them in my soul. We ordered a bottle of Pinot Noir and got a side of fries ($5) and pickles ($5), as there is no better date night than wine and fries. One of the most underrated combinations in the food game. They are oddly reminiscent of Brandon Roy and Lamarcus Aldridge, just so underappreciated. We sat there, watching the USC and Florida football games on our respective phones between sips of Pinot Noir and bites of these phenomenal fries. Such a nice wine bar! Glasses are on the pricier side in my opinion, but their $12 Negroni was delicious and felt like a steal. Ambiance was pleasant with romantic dim lighting, but definitely on the louder side. We decided to come to Le Caveau for a drink ahead of our dinner reservation at Good King Tavern as it is just above the restaurant and has the same owners. I expressed to our waiter that I was excited to try the #1 martini and was quickly told not order it and persuaded into purchasing an $80 bottle of wine (over $100 after tax and tip). The wine was not good, but the biggest issue was we were assured that we could bring the bottle down to the restaurant and have it with our dinner. Additionally, I was told that that Good King could also make the specific martini that I originally wanted to order so I could have the chance to try it. Upon sitting down at Good King we were questioned by both the waiter and manager as to why we would bring the opened wine bottle as they treat Le Caveau as a separate establishment and drinks cannot be transferred and consumed at the restaurant. Even after explaining that we were told repeatedly we could do it by the staff at Le Caveau, the staff at Good King were extremely rude to us about the situation and made us feel very uncomfortable. I also asked about potentially ordering the martini on the menu from Le Caveau and was scolded again and told it was not possible. The staff at Good King ultimately let us drink the wine we purchased from Le Caveau but everything about the situation just felt weird and off. Overall we left feeling the waiter at Le Caveau was either dishonest in order to upsell or just inexperienced (however it is worth noting he told us he had been there for 2 years). The staff at Good King Tavern also made us feel uncomfortable to the point where we felt we should have just left and not stayed for dinner. We will not be returning to either establishment again. read more

Myself and three other friends went upstairs not knowing what to expect and were met with a dimly lit bar with very romantic, moody vibes. It seems like a great place for a date night or to quietly catch up with friends. The bartenders were super helpful in making wine selections as we were't quite sure what to choose. This place was so good! Went over with a friend to good king, wanted to sit at the bar and the hostess said they had seating upstairs at Le Caveau so we figured we'd give it a try. I had a margarita and a Negroni on draft. Both were fantastic, margarita was simple and well made and the draft Negroni was my first ever Negroni lol, also very good. My friend and I both got the French hot dog which was also very good, what I think the bartender said were homemade accoutrements and a fresh toasted baguette. I'll definitely be back. read more

Was excited to check out Le Caveau Wine Bar as the reviews seemed very promising. Le Caveau is located above the Good King Tavern, and the entrance to Le Caveau is only a few steps to the left if you are facing the Good King Tavern. Both are under the same ownership. The wine bar was intimate and the music was chill. I loved the ambiance of this place. As for the wines, the variety for wine by the glass was limited; however, their wines by the bottles go on for pages and pages. It's like they're encouraging you to buy their bottles. The markup on these wines are definitely more than what you expect from this area, like x3. And I get it, these are natural wines and natural wines cost more to make, but the taste didn't do it for me either. My husband and I split a bottle of pinot noir from the Loire Valley and it was just okay. Food wise, the menu is again limited, and the portions are small. This place is more of a pre/post dinner drinks spot. The portion of the charcuterie we ordered to pick on included a few slices of prosciutto served with a basket of bread, which was expected at $8. It would have been nice if the bread was toasted though. Overall, we had a nice time at Le Caveau, mostly because of the ambiance. Service was good too. I would love to come back again. Hopefully, next time they can add more variety to their wines by the glass. read more

Le Caveau had been on our radar for a while since being nominated for a few awards, and we finally got the chance to stop by for a Friday night date night. The wine bar is pretty hidden - located atop Good King Tavern, you likely wouldn't know it existed unless you knew about it before! The door is very minimally marked, giving wine bar / speakeasy vibes. Once arriving upstairs, we took in the warm and welcoming bar. I loved the dim lighting, the exposed brick, the prominent bar decorated with (of course) wine bottles and baguettes, and the eclectic artwork. We got there right around 6PM, so we had no problem snagging a table for 2. I only wish we would have sat on the opposite side of the bar so we had a better view, but no big deal at all. We were bummed that their hot dog machine was out of operation that night (we were eyeing up the French hot dogs!), but we settled on a number of cheeses and meats, olives, and chips and roe. The cheeses were delicious and made a perfect match for our wine. The chips and roe were delicious too - the creme fraiche made for a light and creamy dip balanced with a bit of salt from the roe. Of course, the star of the show was the cab Franc that we settled on - excellent quality and perfect warmth for a winter night (our visit was in January, I should add). We really enjoyed our bottle! I really appreciated that the server helped us with some recs for food and wine, but also didn't push us out (I felt like we were there for quite some time enjoying our wine slowly...). We loved our date night at Le Caveau and would highly recommend for anyone looking for a secluded, romantic space where you can get a fantastic glass or bottle of wine. Came here with friends a few weeks ago just for a drink and saw the menu items and was very excited. The drinks we got that night were good so I decided to come back. The old fashioned is delicious (albeit strong) and definitely worth it. The french bread they give you is phenomenal and perfectly crusty on the outside with a nice fluffy give on the inside. I tried the fried oysters with roe and some kind of sauce and I must say that the sauce was not appealing. There was so much of it and the flavor was odd for my taste. Maybe I have just never had that flavor before but even if I had, there was so much - what I would essentially call - mayo/aioli. I had to scrape a TON off to even taste the oyster. However, the oyster was perfectly cornmeal breaded and the roe was a nice addition. I also tried one of the cheeses and that was perfectly pleasant and a nice palate cleanser between my other course. The real star of the show (besides the old fashioned) was the smoked whitefish rillettes. I loved smoked whitefish so I may be a bit biased here but it came in this little jar topped with a layer of butter and/or fat that created this shell you had to break through to get to the good stuff. Paired with the aforementioned perfect bread - it was amazing. My only critique would be that there was maybe a little too much of the butter/fat - but that's just me. I would have liked a better proportion since I'm not a huge fan of that. Atmosphere-wise, this place is charming. It's small but not too small, good drinks but not too expensive, classy but not too pretentious, a really good vibe for happy hour, dinner of light snacks to share, and a little bit of a hidden gem as it's upstairs from Good King Tavern (look for the one door on the side for entry). I will be back to try other foods and look forward to their ever-changing menu. read more

Love the vibe here. They could offer more wine by the glass though, there's plenty of wine bars that are upscale that do and at the bottle prices are not super attractive unless you have friends you're going to share with. What they did offer by the glass was quite good though. Definitely room for growth! read more

Le Caveau is one of my favorite spots in the 215. It's secretly hiding on top of the Good King Tavern, but has a more intimate, date night or silly friend night vibe and not necessarily a sit down dinner energy. I've been here several times to just split a bottle with friends - their sommelier can recommend anything based on your needs ( I normally go on the funky side and we have fun with that). He's one of the most knowledgeable sommeliers I've met in the city and they have a wine tasting class / wine tasting nights that are on my to do list! The food here is still excellent - I love the cheese options, the HOT DOGS, the olives. I truly cannot recommend this place more! read more

Up a long flight of stairs, Le Caveau is hidden away on the second floor of an unassuming building. The stars tonight are solely for service. Food is always delicious and ambiance is superb. I don't know what it was tonight, but my service was pretty bad. I can understand being weeded or short staffed, but that personally doesn't feel like an excuse for lack of hospitality. No one said hello, no one smiled, when my wine was poured a gulp of it got on the table and my glass and there was no attention given to it. I asked for a napkin to wipe it up. Additionally, my bar space was not wiped down before I sat. Granted, I sat immediately and maybe a little too over-zealously after another party got up, but that's beside the point. To add, there wasn't any follow up, "how is everything," after I got my order. To add even more, when a couple next to me asked a bartender for plates for their cheese board and another bartender responded with, "what's their problem," that didn't make me feel wanted in this space. That's when I asked for the check and bolted out of there. The glass of Grenache and chips and roe were spectacular, but for $30 for the 2 small items I got, I expect better service. read more

I enjoyed the look and casual nature of Le Caveau. It's what I was looking for in a wine bar, a place to chill and try some wine that I hadn't had before (specifically French wine in this instance). There were a couple of glasses that I found that I liked, and a couple that I really didn't like. I was disappointed that they didn't have more offerings by the glass. If I recognized the bottles, I or came in with more people, I would have been more comfortable venturing into the bottles. I enjoyed the snacks that were offered. The comté cheese and olives that we had went well with our wine. Though I was disappointed with the bread that came with it, it was surprisingly tough. An excellent new wine bar above The Good King Tavern opened by the same owners. It's meant to recall a French wine bar in the Loire Valley and it really hits the mark. The wine list is absolutely fabulous. Really interesting by the glass list with mostly french wines but a few other sprinkled in. The bottle list here might be the true gem. It's just big enough to be deep but brief enough not to be overwhelming. All of the bottles are reasonably priced and they have some wonderful offerings. The owner pointed us to an excellent Cabernet Franc from the Loire and it even featured a bottle from my one all time favorite wineries that is rarely on menus Bichi Wines from Baja. Any wine program that features Mexican wine is getting top marks from me. The food was very good as well- bar olives were delicious and visually appealing. Charcuterie board was very good also and exactly what you want with wine. Overall the bar has a fun, cool vibe and the offerings are exceptional. I will go again and again. read more

This might be my new favorite wine bar in Philly. It's easy to miss if you don't know where it is. It's right around the corner from the Good King Tavern. It's a really cozy, intimate vibe but in a very unpretentious way. They have some small bites available as well as cocktails and a pretty extensive wine list. I do agree with the other reviews on the fact that their options for by the glass are very limited. I was with a big group, though, so we were happy to order bottles. They offer table service or you can sit at the bar. Our server recommended some delicious wines that I normally wouldn't have tried so it was cool to try something new. This is a great spot for a date night or post-dinner drinks with a group. I believe they have wine classes during the week, too! read more
