She was inattentive and spent most of her time on her phone. Despite raising my hand a few times, I couldn't get her attention to order another drink. To make matters worse, she actively served others sitting at the bar while continuing to ignore me. While the first bartender made a great impression, the change in service left me disappointed. I did meet a new friend, which was a highlight, but now I know to enjoy my time there early and head out when the second shift starts.

My friend wanted to go to her car to get a pain reliever, and she and I were going to step outside because the bouncer has let her leave and come back in before. When we asked, he said he would let her go out and come back in, but he wouldn't let me go with her. I explained that I wanted to go because, in my opinion, this is not an area where I feel comfortable with two women walking outside alone late at night. His response was, "It's perfectly safe." I understand that he may have a different opinion, but sitting inside the gated entrance, he's not the one who would be walking to the car with us. Later, when a male friend from our group tried to go outside with her instead, the bouncer made him read the no-reentry sign multiple times. At that point, we all decided to leave. What bothered me most was the inconsistency. If the rules on the sign are going to be strictly enforced, then they should be consistently enforced--including the bag checks that are listed on the same sign. And if exceptions are going to be made, they should be applied consistently rather than depending on who is asking. I came here expecting to have a fun karaoke night, and unfortunately the way this was handled left such a bad taste in my mouth that we won't be coming back. If you're looking for a karaoke spot in Long Beach, just be aware that this was my experience with the security at this particular bar.

We stopped by late Saturday night and were able to snag an immediate walk-in at the bar at Hao Peng You, which is the intimate speakeasy portion of Midnight Oil. The decor definitely reminded me of my grandparents' house in Taiwan, with vintage, ornate wooden chairs, dragon/lion statue carvings, and even a historic century old marital bed that had been repurposed into a booth. The drinks were also VERY unique, with my favorite being Hua sheng (literally meaning peanut), which was crafted from a nostalgic childhood peanut milk drink. All our cocktails were crafted very well, to the point where I thought they were a bit on the lighter side since I couldn't really taste the alcohol. This section does get really busy though and only had one bartender who is making/serving drinks and taking orders, so do expect a bit of a wait.
