Great is the enemy of good. I'd rather be good at something every. single. day., than great at something once in a while. Think about how much we rely on consistency in our lives. The train or bus we take each morning. Our coffee maker. The WiFi always up and running smoothly so we can be properly connected to the world. Now, take that thought, and compare it with the opposite. Inconsistency. Your train or bus sometimes coming on time, or sometimes it's late. Your coffee maker working well for 3 days and then BAM, it's on the fritz for the next 2 days. Then working again. Spotty WiFi. Sometimes is silky smooth, and other times you can't even get any service after multiple modem reboots. Consistency is better, huh?
Enter Blind Barber (BB). BB is probably the most consistent place I've been to for nightlife in Chicago since I've moved here. I've also been to BB about 10 times, and each and every time has not disappointed. It's steady, you know what to expect, and it's a great place to bring people who like to have a good time.
BB is a legit barbershop, with a bar/club behind the barber floor. Decorations for the barbershop and the bar are good. Nothing crazy, nothing fancy, but fits with the vibe perfectly. On a Friday or Saturday night, expect a line anytime after 10/10:30. You've been warned. It can get packed in there, so this is where the fork in the road emerges. But I think anyone can be satisfied. Here's how.
If you get there late on a weekend night, you may have to wait in line, unless you know someone or ordered a section/table. Now, don't think my last line makes this place pretentious. There's only a few "tables" in there, and it doesn't make you feel like you're in a have/have not atmosphere. Some people just like to pay a premium to have a dedicated space and drinks. Nothing wrong with that. It can get pretty packed inside, so unless you're ready to hit and stay on the dance floor all night, I may point you to an alternative way to enjoy BB.
GO EARLY. After dinner cocktails. It won't be as packed, you'll be able to get a seat at or near the bar, and you can usually count on enjoying good hip-hop music from all the decades. Then when it starts to fill up a bit, that's when you and your crew make an exit. Boom. Simple.
Life hack? Thursday night. This is the perfect place to go on a Thursday. It'll fill up, but not too much, yet not too dead. This amount of people is what I call "healthy." You want to be somewhere with a healthy crowd. That way it doesn't seem like a place isn't doing well, but the place also isn't overcrowded.
I can almost tell you exactly what to expect depending on the night/time of BB; a good time all around. I've never taken someone there who didn't like it; because I also strive to know my audience and what they like. I like people who like consistency, because consistency is needed, where spontaneity, inconsistency, and wishy-washy-ness adds a colorful, yet most of the time pesky layer to life.
Heed my advice, pick a time which works for you, based on my recs, and enjoy BB. 4.5/4.7 stars. read more
