Funk's Barbershop - Barbers Near Me - Chicago, Illinois

Funk's Barbershop, downtown Chicago. Back in town for New Year's. Same trip my wife and I make every year. Same city that feels like an old friend. I needed a quick cleanup on the beard. What I walked out with was something else entirely. This was a full man pampering experience. And I'm not using that word lightly. Beard trim. Clean squared lines. Tight fade. Hot towel. Straight razor shave. Another hot towel. Beard balm and oil worked in slow and intentional. Then a clean aftershave that made the whole thing feel finished. Not rushed. Not sloppy. Done right. Joshua took care of me, and the guy is a surgeon with clippers. Quiet confidence. Knows his craft. Listens. Adjusts. Checks his work. Then checks it again. He also introduced me to Lawrence, the owner. Solid guy. Proud of his shop. You can feel that standard in the place. The vibe inside is Chicago. Cool. Relaxed. Real. No ego, but you know you're somewhere legit. You're not sitting in a chain shop where they push you in and shove you out. You sit down. You get taken care of. You walk out looking like you respect yourself again. And fellas, if you stop in, don't be surprised if you see a Chicago pro athlete sitting three chairs down. This place pulls a crowd. Highly recommend Joshua. Highly recommend Funk's. If you're in town and want to look sharp instead of hacked up, go here. Treat yourself. Let them spoil you. Then go about your night with some swagger. read more

Miguel hooked me up. Great cut from a great guy. Just booked another appointment and it wont be the last.

I found Funk's Barbershop thanks to a friend, and wow, am I glad I did! Back in December 2023, I decided to shave my head with the idea of growing it out naturally--but I ended up loving the look so much that I never went back. Finding a good barber is no joke--it's kind of like finding the perfect gynecologist: trust is everything. When my old barber moved too far away, I was nervous about trying somewhere new. As a woman, walking into a traditional, old-school barbershop felt a little intimidating, but Lawrence (the owner) immediately put me at ease. Even while booking, he was confident he'd nail the look I wanted. And oh, did he deliver. When I sat in his chair, Lawrence didn't just cut my hair--he listened. He gave thoughtful tips to make my cut even better, but there was no pressure or weird vibes. He's the real deal. My cut turned out better than I could've imagined! During our consultation, he said, "I'm not giving you hard lines. I want to keep it feminine, which I think is exactly what you're asking for without saying it." That was it--he won me over. Lawrence is officially my barber for life. So, to all my bald baddies: if you want a crisp, flawless cut from someone who actually listens (and happens to be ridiculously easy on the eyes), head to Funk's Barbershop and ask for Lawrence. You'll thank me later! read more

I have been searching for a barber for my son downtown as we have been driving to Hyde park for years . Funks is close to his high school and had great reviews so thought we'd give it a try . Friendly staff , love the decor , it's super clean and spacious and it was truly a great experience . We've already made the next appointment . It's a little pricier than what we've paid previously but the convenience , experience and level of service make it worth it read more

Walking into the shop, you'd really think you'd get a good shave. My fiancé came in with a face full of hair, and left with just some of it still there. He claims the experience was fun, and new, but he won't be coming back. He got a hair cut, and a facial shave. Hair cut was too short, facial wasn't complete. Walking out, he said he could get a cleaner shave with his own razor, and that he'll be going home to clean it up. Was not worth the $110.00. His hair cut was a little shorter than he wanted, however the cut itself is amazing. Very detailed and very well done. He is bleeding a little bit, and his face is a red. You shouldn't be this red, and he never has been this red after a shave before. My fiancé had to ask for after shave too, that's a little odd to us. The vibe of the shop is amazing, good music, and the barbers are dressed very nicely. We won't be coming back to this location, I know it has its fans, but he says he'll go try some place else. read more

I brought my son here for a haircut and they did a fairly good job. The only issue I had was that they tried to charge my son haircut as an adult and not a child. I got a refund but I had to ask, I don't think I should have to explain to them that my son is a child. My son's haircut was $38. The interior was exotic and looked like a professional barber shop which there is not too many places like Funk's. read more

I would highly recommend Funk's barbershop for haircut/beard trimming services. I found about them online and gave a try. The place looks really funky with billboards/banners from all over the world. I didn't have to wait for long as I scheduled an appointment over a phone call. James was amazing and I got the best haircut/ beard trim in Chicago. The attention to detail is top notch and I got the trim and the fade I was looking for. Even though it's a bit on the pricey side I would still go there again. read more

Great barbershops are hard to come by, I lived in the loop for 3 years and tried nearly every barber here before finally finding Funks. This shop specializes in short haircuts, as other reviewers who are complaining about that should have figured given that it's a barbershop - this is the case for 90% of classic men's barbershops. Longer haired men (especially if worn down or in any special type of way) should go to a salon where the equipment, prices, and skill will better serve your needs. That's not to say they couldn't handle it here, but longer hair is not cut/styled for $50-$70 anywhere these days, so if you pay this place $60 and expect them to wash, condition, hair dry, and cut/style your 13+ inch hair you're going to be disappointed. One thing to get out of the way Medo is the Man! He has been my barber for over 2 years now and the guy is a pro. When I got a meeting, I have to get to he works hard to try and get me finished up quick so I'm not late, and times when I have nothing else going on I hang out, chat, and relax during my cut. I believe you can tell true skill in a barber by how often you end up liking each new haircut because with every new cut - you are comparing it to an increasing amount of previous haircuts you've gotten. After years of having my hair cut by Medo I'd say that he truly is skilled and is only getting better with time. Each cut I've gotten at Funks has been better than the last which is why I've been returning here for over 2 years. Price is solid. Quality is solid. Crew is cool. Dog is nice. Vibe is on point. read more

Shout out to Robert B for my most recent cut. I was very happy with it. I'd ask for him again. I've been a loyal customer here for a couple of years now. The experience is seamless and the barbers are polished and professional. Also shout out to Josh R and Steven H. I like that it really doesn't matter whose chair I'm in. This place does a good job at only bringing in people who know what they're doing. read more

I came in 2/12/25 and got my hair cut by Berto, when I came in I had hair in the front going past my nose. I said I want my hair to hang in front of my eyes and just trim it up a bit. I left with hair that won't even reach my eyebrow. can't speak for every barber there but Berto just did whatever he felt like and gave me a wildly different haircut than I asked for and possibly one of the worst I've ever gotten I look terrible. I will not be coming back especially considering how ex the price of haircuts here I'm extremely disappointed I don't even look like the same person. Pictures below. read more

Have been going to James recently. Does a great job, super nice and great service all around.

Have been coming here on and off since 2016 and have always received great service. Most recently I got a goatee trim and razor shave (I'm bald) by Lawrence for my daughter's 1st birthday party. Service was great and on time. Not one razor bump showed up afterwards, which admittedly never happens when i shave myself. read more

My boyfriend goes every two weeks to get his fade touched up by Chuy. He absolutely loves how his hair is done. He also enjoys how Chuy knows exactly what he's doing. Absolute rubbish haircut and dangerous with a straight razor. Would never recommend. The barber cut my neck in three different places, because they decided to cut like amateurs. My 6 year old and I are vacationing in Chicago from California this week. Was supposed to get his hair cut before we left, but didn't make the time. Figured we could do it in Chicago. I yelped and this was the place that came up. Super cute barbershop! Definitely different from the barbershops we've gone to in our town. Came in around 2pm yesterday. Didn't see the dog but that's okay. I made a super last minute booking. Medo was our barber and he was great with my kid. Super patient and took his time with his hair. He came out looking like a whole new kid. Thanks for a great experience! Probably his best haircut he's had so far. I also like how it still looks good without styling. It's unfortunate we don't live in Chicago! read more

Funk's boasts a masterful and pristine space with a vintage barbershop collection you won't find anywhere else. Aside from the impeccable design, I appreciate the genuine and authentic staff. I even started my first beard under his guidance. Whether it's a complimentary beverage or a few pets with the shop's friendly canine, this place will take excellent care of you! read more

While you can see the reviews here are all positive, I am still going to add mine to recognize my barber and just attest that this is a great barbershop to patron. I just moved back home to Chicago recently and my former hair stylist and the salon I went to is no longer in business in the area. I went to another salon that I will not name, and I left very unhappy since the stylist chose to run 15 min late for my appointment, lop my hair off recklessly, and then was expecting big tips for her company. Sadly, there's a lot of places like that for men's hair in the city and suburbs. Funk's is the real deal, though. These gentlemen know how to do men's haircuts, they do a great job, and the atmosphere is something familiar and nice. It's a chill, comfortable place for men to come. I got my haircut with Sam, and he truly did a great job. Everything about the service and experience is top notch, worth every penny (and the pricing I think is very fair). Funk's has a highly intuitive, convenient online scheduling system (it even tells you each Barber's next near-term availabilities) and you can even pre-pay before the visit. All things considered, I'm sticking with Sam for as long as I can! Thanks again, guys! I'm feeling much better having a go-to place again. read more

For what it's worth, Mike, the 'operations manager' if I remember right, phoned me contritely, thanking me for the review to improve their operation, and refunded the service. He also offered the next service on them, but considering the newly-reminded vulnerable situation that a straight razor on a neck is, I'd have to be out of my mind. He understood. He was apparently out of town for the past couple weeks and couldn't return my message. Obviously I think someone else should have returned it for him. He called a sentence in my review "aggressive." I do not agree, but after I considered its speculative nature, I decided that the sentence was a digression and unfair in the sense that they couldn't be responsible for it, and so I removed it. What else can he do for me now? Nothing. The damage is done and he's done all he can at this point. I doubt they sell burn balm. read more

Bottom line: James B refused to fix up my hair after the initial cut which did not look like the picture I showed him. Haircut was so bad that I had to get it fixed 2 days later at Civic Opera House Barber Shop which is cheaper, has WAY more experienced barbers, provides better service, and was kind enough to not even charge me for fixing my botched haircut from James B at Funk's barber shop. My go-to barber "Philip Di Ciminna", an absolute legend, unfortunately closed down shop. I went to James B seeing his very positive reviews in my search for a new barber. I arrived 5 minutes early and ended up waiting for 30 minutes after my scheduled appointment time. There was a misunderstanding (which I take full accountability for) over a taper vs fade on my hair...after the cut was finished, I wanted my sides to be shorter as my haircut did not look like the picture I showed him to emulate. I apologized for my misunderstanding and asked that he'd fix it and give me a fade instead of a taper. He was NOT willing to spend a little more time on my hair and I walked out with one of the worst cuts I've received in years...after having waited 30 minutes past my scheduled appointment time. I disliked my haircut so much that I went somewhere else to fix it before I stepped foot into my office...it was that bad. I took my business to the Civic Opera House Barber as they seem to operate with more class (based on the reviews). Sam from the Civic Opera House Barber gave me a fade and fixed my haircut...and refused to let me pay him. That's real service. Also, Civic Opera House Barber charges $40 for haircuts vs Funk's $60-$70. Giving 2 stars instead of 1 since James seemed like a nice guy but I'd never get my hair cut from him again. GO TO CIVIC OPERA HOUSE BARBER SHOP...TRUST ME. read more

This place could very well give great haircuts... I'll never know. Had an appointment scheduled with Rob at 4:30 - I arrived at 4:25 and was greeted by the host who let me know it would be 5 minutes or so until Rob was finished with his customer. No problem, happy to wait. 20 minutes pass and it still looks like Rob is in the middle of a haircut and I start wondering if this customer sat down just a minute or two before my scheduled appointment. I give it until 5 and decide to leave - I am not an impatient man however I found it disrespectful and ill-suited for a "one-of-a-kind" barbershop. There is an old saying, "How you do one thing is how you do everything". If this is how Rob treats his customers before the haircut, I am not sticking around to find out how he treats them during. 2 stars only because the host was kind and tried to speed Rob up 3 separate times (to no avail). read more

I had an excellent haircut and shave here from Mike. Probably the best haircut and shave I've ever had in my life. If I'm ever rich, I'd come here every 3 days to get a straight razor shave. My skin is very sensitive, so I was a bit apprehensive before the shave, but I had nothing to fear. I'm not sure if was the three different shaving creams, the multiple hot towels, or just the skillful technique, but my skin felt awesome afterwards. The haircut was also amazing, Mike had an impressive eye for detail. All I asked for was a short cut, but he went above and beyond that and gave me a masterful haircut. read more

James B has been my go-to barber for 13 years. Funk's is convenient for me because my entire life is downtown Chicago. I'm on camera and attend meetings on the day to day basis and there's no one else I can trust with the clippers more than James. He's also more than just my barber, his attitude and attention to detail has helped us build a great friendship throughout this experience. Funk's is more than just a barbershop, it feels like a museum of which you can ask questions and the barbers know the origin of every piece (almost like an art museum). I highly recommend Funk's not only for the talent in the building but also for the professionalism amongst peers. read more
