God this haircut was ass. The standards at this place really have gone down since I came here a few years back. The barber left me worse than when I came in and couldn't blend properly. Like many of the other reviewers here, I had my hair absolutely decimated by a careless barber who ignored my request to trim the top. I came in with 5+ inches of hair on the top of my head, left with slightly over 1. I've been to State St. in Old Town many times, and there seems to be a huge turnover at this location. The first time I went I got an amazing cut, but that stylist since left. Each barber since has been a disappointment. I recently moved to the city and was looking for a new barber shop that was reasonably priced and had good reviews so I gave them a try. Ahmed cut my hair and although I didn't feel rushed I did feel that a lot of areas were missed. I did feel rushed by the lady at the front desk as it seemed she was rushing Ahmed so they can close the shop but he insisted that he'll take his time. When I looked in the mirror at the barber shop it looked like a good haircut until I got home. Then I realized how much was missed and how the fade wasn't actually faded correctly. As you can see by the pictures the hair is not faded and quite patchy in places. There is a cluster of hair above my right ear that just looks odd and that it shouldn't be there. I've had to spend time after the haircut fixing some of the patchy areas as best I can. The only reason I give this two stars is because Ahmed seemed like a genuinely nice guy. read more

First time visiting. The guy at the desk just about looked up from his phone to check me in and had headphones in. The barber didn't introduce himself. To be fair the haircut was ok. But wasn't what I wanted, I wanted a low skin fade with a heavier parting - I got a high/mid fade. Which anyone who has tried to maintain a low fade, knows is very frustrating. He didn't speak to me through the entire haircut. At the beginning I initiated conversation to which he complained about working a long day. Which I certainly empathise with but don't sympathise with. Considering he had walk-in availability on a Friday lunch time you'd think he'd put more effort in to building his client book and actually try develop a relationship with the persons hair he's cutting. Atmosphere sucked. Listening to the employees communicate was as if they don't like each other. They all seemed miserable. read more

I went here for the first time this weekend and will not be returning. I have relatively short hair, and in the beginning I explicitly told the barber that I wanted to keep the length but just to clean it up a bit. Specifically, I told him a 5 on the sides and keep the length on the top. The barber completely disregarded what I said and cut it shorter than I would cut it in the summer. He seemed more concerned about asking what shows I've watched recently than he did my haircut. read more

I was about 12 mins early to my appointment and was finished with me, before my actual appointment. you think paying 40 dollars for a hair cut the person there would be no rush. Cut itself was fine, not the best I've had but certainly not the worst. I was running 10 minutes late and called to notify, for which I take full responsibility. Wardell seemed reluctant to seat me did anyways although he seemed irritated about it. We spoke four times total and aside from me describing to him what I wanted, our conversations were all about how late I was and how lucky I was that he is so fast. Gloated to another barber, who was standing with his hands in his pockets the whole time I was there, about how efficient he is and that he even finished with 5 minutes to spare. However I was informed that I wouldn't get a wash because I was late, so I spent the rest of the day with trimmings blowing off of my head. You receive a massage as part of your service but he has said they skip that sometimes (and he's not to happy about that). Overall, good stylists that know what they're doing. First off, a qualifier. I'm a guy, so all I really require of a hair cutting establishment is that I walk out with shorter, better looking hair than I walked in with. I don't want a paraffin hand treatment or my eyebrows done. I made my first appointment with State Street Barbers today and was seen exactly when I wanted to be. The staff was courteous and at times even funny. I got the cut I wanted and it didn't take an hour. They were conversational, but not overly chatty. I don't like the idea that your hairstylist is supposed to treat you like you're about to be best friends. I'll be back in a few weeks as it's a decently priced cut from an experienced stylist. I never write reviews. Bernadetta cut my hair. She was rude and rushed. I asked for a trim- a standard request. When she asked what number clipper I liked I couldn't remember and told her I wasnt sure. She responded with an annoyed "Well I don't know!..." Cue awkward silence. Once she began I noticed her tools were all stuffed with old hair. From the brushes and combs to the blades of the clippers which were so clogged they pulled my hair as much as cut it forcing her to change them. The service and pricing described here on Yelp is not what you get. There was no quick massage, there was no hot towel. And instead of $30 for a "signature haircut" they offer a three level service without any information about what each includes. My haircut was 10 minutes with clippers and I was charged for a level 2 haircut at $35. Don't go. Try Old Town Barbershop down the street. read more

My experience with State Street Barbers on Wells has been very good. Anna is exceptional -- she cuts mean hair, is very personable, and understands customer service. I work in the area, and I can get my hair cut during my lunch hour without any fuss. I've never felt rushed out the door; on the contrary, Anna takes as much time as I need to get my hair cut, my beard trimmed and get a shave if/when I need one. I have to say I'm a bit mystified by the "go to XYZCuts - it's cheaper/better" thread here. State Street Barbers charges $18 for a haircut, and the Hair Cuttery in Wicker Park charges about the same. I've had good experiences with both, but I have to say that the State Street personnel have always been friendly, efficient and knowledgeable. I'm not sure you get the same attention you would at a chain, especially if you're male and just want to get a haircut. read more

So I have a mixed review on this place. When you get a haircut, your experience is only as good as the individual that is cutting your hair. Ever since this place opened I've gotten my hair cut by Bernadetta, roughly 7 or 8 years ago. She is absolutely amazing. I can honestly say that in the last 8 years I haven't gotten a bad haircut from her yet, and she is hilarious and cool. i look forward to my visit with her come haircut time. I go to State Street Barbers because of Bernadetta alone, and as long as she's working there, I'll never get my hair cut anywhere else. That said, I'm not a huge fan of this business. I hated the fact that there was a Groupon for 50% off a haircut there but it was only extended to new customers. So let me get this right...I've been getting my hair cut there every 3-4 weeks since they've opened, and through word of mouth I've referred a huge amount of business to this place, but I don't qualify for a groupon there? I think that's downright offensive, and a horrible business practice...a true slap in the face to a loyal customer base. I know other customers that shared my thoughts on this. In summary, because my stylist is great, I'll keep coming back here. They used to offer a beer while you wait, which I rarely accepted because I would be there early on weekends, but they don't seem to do that any more. The neck shave is quality. I always get shampoo'd, and even though the price has steadily increased since I started going there, I think it's still a good value for the quality of haircut that I receive. I even remember when they were building the place out, I was excited at the prospect of a local barber that could give decent cuts and that wouldn't cost an arm an a leg. But you're not getting Truefit & Hill (900 North), you're getting Hair Cuttery. I made the mistake of walking in for a cut, thinking that at least, given the look of the place, they might at least deign to lift a razor or scissors. The man at the desk told me the guy was good, and when I sat down I told the barber exactly what I wanted, and no clipper work--all scissor work. So what does he start doing halfway through my hair cut--clipper-ing my hair. What could I do? One side of my head has hair longer than the other and after a month it's still too short to be corrected. My barber just was not that skilled and I should have known better. I am a little biased here because Marcela, the girl that has been cutting my hair for almost 20 years, works here with her twin sister Bernadette, so I have been following them like a stalker:) But in fairness, the greatest thing about for me getting my hair cut here (and with Marcela) apart from her styling, is her crazy sense of humor, especially if you have a personality and can crack some jokes. I admit I never pay more than $20 for a hair cut, but this was was worth it and I'll probably be back. The hair cut included shampoo and I gotta tell you, these ladies can handle a straight razor. Did I mention most of the "barbers" were women? I needed a hair cut badly and since I was going to be in the North Loop and Old Town areas, I needed to find a place. I ended up calling for an appointment and was able to get one for the afternoon the same day. The people were nice and the atmosphere warm and rustic, and it was even fronted by a classic facade and a barber pole. Did they really have those in the old days? This is the best place to get a haircut. They take walkins (I'm an appointment guy though), have good reading material, and a great atmosphere. I now live out in the west suburbs and try to plan a trip to the city to visit Maestro the Barber because he's that good. They give an excellent cut and use nice products (Crew, Tea Tree, Art of Shaving, etc). Price is worth it. Always have good conversation there too. I've gotten my haircut for the past 2 years that I've lived in River North. I've had my hair cut by Richard, Remi, Bobby, and Ann. All of them are great, although I like Remi's precision and attention to detail the most. They are all friendly, but not pushy. At $27, the cut is a *little* expensive for my tastes (I have a very simple cut), but the shampoo, hot lather neck shave and brief shoulder/neck massage, keep me coming back. The best thing about this place is their consistency. They consistently give me *good* hair cuts. I'm moving to Lakeview next month and will be sad to leave this place. Hopefully the Southport location is as good as the River North one. read more

It's tough to find a reliable barber after moving to a new neighborhood, after trying a few different places in the area I'm glad I found Rashaad at State Street Barbers. He's a pleasure to talk to, and you can tell he puts a high level of care into his cuts by taking the time to make sure all the little details are perfect. I'm not the best at verbalizing the hair style I'm looking for, but Rashaad made it look even better than how I envisioned in my head. I have been seeing Bernadetta at State Street Barbers on Wells for almost three years. Wow, I can't believe it's been that long! Since I started going there, I won't go anywhere else or let anyone touch my hair. I'm pretty picky and very specific about how I like my hair, and Bernadetta is patient with me and always makes sure that I leave happy and looking fresh! To boot, she's fun and I always laugh and enjoy myself while she's cutting! The haircut is $32, which is a good price for the service they provide... especially in the area! I also like that they take advanced appointments like a salon because a lot of shops don't, which makes it super difficult when you're busy and trying to plan your week! I'd definitely recommend making appointment with Bernadetta and checking out State Street -- super good find!! read more

Good haircuts. There are different level of expert and each level comes at higher price. Parking by Wells has a free lot, validation required (it's across the street). Webster location parking can be tight, but lots of free parking on the street and around the corner. Recommend appointment ; these places are always busy. They also do free touch ups (neck, side burns), within a Month of your haircut. read more
