As I usually do when trying out new places, I never mention that I've heard of the place or anything like that in order to get as much of an authentic experience as possible. And this is what I discovered... Positives: - Norm was a nice guy - No wait (but I went on Friday at noon) Negatives: - I get a "buzz cut," #4 on top and 2 on the sides. So this is by no means a difficult haircut. However, it is important to be precise and patient to make sure everything is even all around. Norm was the exact opposite. Impatient, rushed, careless. - Small cuts around ears - Afterwards, Norm mentioned something about it being time for lunch, which normally would be a fine comment, but in this case just reaffirmed his pre-haircut attitude of "just get through this as quick as possible" - Price was $20. Definitely steep. I didn't give him a tip because that is what I pay (tops) including tip at any other shop. Not sure if he even expected a tip (he didn't make any sort of passive aggressive gesture), and maybe that's the reason he charges $20 to begin with. Who knows. Overall, while the haircut was FINE (again, with a buzz cut minor miscues are amplified), I wouldn't go back after weighing the positives and negatives. read more

Just had my first visit last p.m. I strolled in about 10 past 6. Norm greeted me with a smile and told me to come on in, despite it being past closing time. Off to a good start. In this day of the male salon (of which I've tried a couple), it was nice to be back in a no-nonsense bastion of manhood. From the conversation to the mags., this place was a throwback to barbershops of old. If you're looking for tvs, techno music pumping, and a manicure this isn't your spot. Ridiculous service. We drove all the way to the barbershop which is a 30 minute drive after we had gotten an appointment. Once we got there, it was difficult to find the place so we called them when we were right outside on the street and they told us the building number. It was inside a large building filled with lots of tiny studios, on the second floor. It wasn't even 5 minutes between the phone call and when we got to the shop and when we knocked on the door, no one answered or opened the door. The door was locked and we stood there for about 15 minutes until we just left. They made us waste our time, gas, money for parking just to not get a haircut that we had an appointment for. I can see why this place got some low ratings...my experience was almost exactly the same as one of the previous reviewer's. I was in the area and needed only a trim, so I figured I would try this place out. First of all, this place is incredibly hard to find. It's actually located inside the Flatiron Arts Building under the name Trixie on the second floor. When I got to the second floor, I thought maybe the barbershop moved or something and got replaced by Trixie. But then this gentlemen comes out and says that he's the owner of the barbershop. He wasn't that friendly and seemed a bit eccentric tbh. I'm pretty sure he had literally no customers when I arrived, but he still asked if I had an appointment. When I said no, he sternly replied, "well, you need an appointment", and then left. Didn't offer to take me in as a walk in or anything else. He acted as if he couldn't be bothered because he gave this vibe that he's above it all and that his barbershop is too good for walk ins. Honestly, like I said before, it's not like he even had any customers or was busy! The complete lack of professionalism and customer service left such a poor taste in my mouth. And to be quite honest, this is a hole in the wall. The owner needs to stop acting like he's running this exclusive, in demand, high end salon that's by appointment only. Hell, even high end salons do not have the kind of attitude that this barbershop owner exudes! Really unimpressed with the 45 minute wait time despite an appointment / absent apology or recognition , narcissistic attitude, and 10 minute haircut that was average at best. I have been a client of Norm's for the past 10 years or so and I highly recommend him .It's and "old school" atmosphere with "old school" amenities .You haven't had a real haircut until you let Norm give you a cut along with a shave. I've been going to Norm, the owner of Bucktown Barbershop for a couple of years now. He's a great guy and 9 out of 10 times I've get a pretty solid cut. Sometimes Norm can get distracted with chit chatting in old shop however. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, it's part of the barbershop experience afterall. But his chit chatting can get him sidetracked on focusing on your fade, and it can sometimes take a little longer than necessary to get in and get your hair did. If norm could be a little more efficient with time he'd get a five star rating. read more

Norm is the best barber I have ever had. He really has a way of identifying the kind of cut you are looking for an tailoring it to you. He is also a fantastic personality and the convo is wonderful. His joint is very quaint. Other reviews below have said his scheduling is bad and he has an unprofessional way about him. All I can say is that I have always had my appointment honored. I can also see how he could have come across as having an attitude AT FIRST. Just stick with it. Beneath that first impression, if it is bad (And to me it was fine so to each his own), is a great nice guy who likes what he does and is good at it and wants to form a relationship with you. I don't like getting my hair cut anywhere else. The place is tricky to find.
