Be aware of their fees and "policies" - The 2 stars are for the individual I went to who gave a good haircut, but their customer service and scheme-y rescheduling and cancelation policies are astonishing. Especially when there are so many barber shop options within the downtown Chicago area. I'd wish I paid more attention to the multiple reviews mentioning this during my research. So, I will now be going to a different barber in the area. These tactics relating to their philosophy on client service are costly and concerning for their business model and management. Tareq was my barber. He was so personable and warm and he did a great job. As a woman rocking a new cut, I'm still getting used to what to ask for at the barber shop. Tareq both offered suggestions and listened to me. My hair looks sharp and the experience was efficient. Overall, the Levant Shop is classy, clean and bright. They charged me $50 cancellation fee since I had to reschedule my appointment 45 minutes later. I have been a regular here and have spent $200 in haircuts/shave alone this month! I walked in and the receptionist scheduled my appointment for 35 minutes later. I had an emergency situation and I called them and it seemed ok over the phone since they told me that I can come in later. After the haircut I realized they already charged my card $50 for "cancellation fee" and told me I owe them another $50 for a haircut. They didn't care if I'm a regular client and they seem to lack any customer service skills. I will NEVER support them with the attitude they have. I have now spent $300 at this place this month! I've come into Levant every 12 days to 2 weeks on average since midsummer and alternated between Ahmad and Vissi as my barbers. Ahmad can give a very good haircut and be amusing especially with his practice of manhandling customers (he is a proud bodybuilder), but on reflecting about his behavior during a couple of my appointments, I would strongly advise against letting him cut your hair. For one, even though you may already arrive with your hair very recently cut - including by him - he attempts to change the price just to suit his whims while the haircut is already underway. During the first haircut, he insisted on adding an additional $10 for a 0.5 fade despite taking very little hair off the top or sides of my hair and refusing to do more than trim the sides of my small mustache. (I do not have a beard.) My haircut was much shorter and less demanding than other clients, whose hair I've watched him cut several times, yet he charges me $10 more than he charges them simply because my fade is slightly lower though not bald. Then during my most recent haircut, he announced that he was finished cutting my hair without having attended to my mustache as usual at all. When I drew his attention to it, he exclaimed "You want me to trim your mustache? That's extra!" as if he had not been expected to do so the previous four times he cut my hair. When I asked how much more he expected than he usually got, he replied "I don't know. $20 or $40 dollar more." I reminded him that we had traditionally included my mustache in the $75 I pay, but that only incensed him further. I thought he was joking, but it turns out he was very serious. He proceeded to bitterly trim my mustache, then knicked me in the lip with the electric razor in his anger. When I expressed pain, he told me that it was my fault that I got knicked because I was responding to his remarks - even though it's him who spends entire haircuts running his mouth about his belief that the media puts out fake news, his support for Trump and Saddam Hussein, his preference for a female massage therapist and disgust at the idea of a male massage therapist (which is very homophobic), his belief that the amazing shop receptionist Carrie is "the princess" of the place, and many other subjects that invite me as the client into aspects of his life and mind that I don't think he really wants me or any other client to enter. I initially laughed all of this off because I didn't realize the severity of it until after I left the shop. Only then did I realize that he had sent me out of the shop with my shirt in disarray, my mustache poorly trimmed, my fade a little sloppier than usual, a cold send off which clearly had something to do with the confrontation about him knicking me and trying to surprise bill an extra "$20 or $40" to trim my mustache which had been trimmed less than two weeks earlier, and $75 less in my pocket than I had on arrival. Confused by his radical shift from hot to cold, I apologized to him later in a private message on his barber Instagram page because I thought I had somehow unintentionally offended him, but he was not receptive. That is perhaps the part of all this that makes the least sense: HE should apologize to me and any other clients to whom he has been so unprofessional. Ahmad, I enjoy much about your home region of the Middle East, but you now work in Chicago at Levant. You cannot haggle with customers regarding the price of services they've already committed to here. Ahmad, you might think you can bully your clients out of the blue, but ultimately, we are the ones who will handle you. This honest, much-deserved negative review will cause you to lose business, make your remaining clients and the other barbers' clients view you differently, and remain up as long as my pockets remain empty of the money you've taken for your deficient service. It is the least you deserve after our final interactions this week. read more

What a great experience!! I've been living in Chicago for a little over a year and haven't been able to find a downtown barbershop to go back to feeling like it was worth the money but now I finally have. I usually don't get too picky about hair cuts and even and Adam said "don't worry I do." He offered new beverages, asked questions about what I wanted without making me feel inadequate for not having answers, and was able to wear a mask and cut around the one I was wearing. You pay for what you get, there is no free lunch per economic theory, and if you seek quality, Levant Barber Shop, and more specifically Adam, provide a quality of service that even a person that doesn't care about their haircut can see. 5-Stars, no question about it! Like most of us, COVID threw my regular hair-cutting routine into a bit of disarray. I work from home now... so, convenience matters. There are 3 or 4 barbershops in close proximity to Levant (+ a big chain hairplace that I didn't consider an option). I wanted to try a few of them before I picked one to write about. Well gents, my search is over. I walked in to Levant Barbershop with no appointment today. I met Adam, sitting alone in a sparkling clean shop. You'd never know it, but he delivers precision cuts with the skill of a surgeon! Right off the bat - I'll confirm the other reviewers are right, they offer you a beverage of your choice as soon as you walk in the door (hospitality is alive and well at Levant). Next Adam asked me to take a seat up front while he meticulously prepped his workstation. At first I wondered why we weren't just going straight to the chair, but once I realized what was happening - I have to say I was impressed with Adam's attention to detail. I was wearing a slightly bulkier mask and started to remove it for the cut. Adam immediately offered a complimentary paper mask, so I wouldnt get hair on my mask, and mentioned it would be easier to work with one of his disposable masks. He approached the haircut like he did everything else - with the skill of a true craftsman. He used clippers, scissors and a straight edge razor on my cut. I haven't come across the style, or brand of razor he uses before - but Great Odin's raven! I don't know if it's the tool, or the hand that wields it, but it is the most precise bladework I have ever seen! Adam even managed to work around my mask by adjusting the straps, loosening and doing a double-loop over each ear at one point to get the mask exactly where he needed it while staying safe. COVID rules were followed to the letter, from the moment I walked in, to the moment I left. This is a newer family-owned business, they opened this summer, in the middle of a pandemic. Adam is an optimist and despite the slow days, he is investing more in the business, and hoping to survive this crazy year. I called for a same-day appointment and was given two times. One was 6 minutes from when I was calling (ridiculous) and the next was an hour out. I gladly accepted the appointment in an hour. The receptionist then explained to me she needed my credit card on file for a reservation which I promptly declined. She informed me I would be charged full price for cancelation within 24hrs which I said was ridiculous. She then took down my name and phone number and agreed to the time slot. 20 minutes prior to the reservation she called me back to cancel. When I asked if I would be credited for the cancellation because they would have charged me if I canceled she became very defensive and rude and even got brave enough to raise her voice over the phone. The staff is clearly undertrained, immature, lack the ability to understand why they enforce certain policies. I have never heard of paying full price for a canceled reservation and frankly that is a rip-off considering these fools canceled on me. Completely unprofessional. read more
