I came by not too long ago to get some super glue to fix my glasses and I was impressed by the quality of this business. They had a great selection of art supplies for every classification I could think of--and there are a lot of areas of study: all types of paints, papers, writing/drawing tools. The list goes on and on. I was also impressed by the friendly professionalism and knowledge of the staff, asking me about any projects I am working on and if I need any assistance. They also have a rewards card so you can track your discounts and expenditures with no annoying periodic emails. I would definitely come by again if I need to read more

I work near this spot and drop in more often than I need to because they have so many cool things and are always helpful. I went by looking for stuff for my kids and the staff directed me to a great adjustable wood model that can be used for sketching. They also have good ideas about what kinds of paint or markers are best on what surfaces. Like anyone who is not an artist or in art school, I sometimes feel slightly awkward asking these artistic types for help with my issues. Blick is great. They have art materials of different quality and prices, which is great for amateur and advanced artists (i.e. me versus my friend). I bought the cheaper water color pallets and pastels and they work well. The staff are super helpful too. At the checkout counter, I told them that I bought the rainbow paper to replicate the Back to the Future hat. They asked how I planned to attach the paper and recommended modge podge. This Blick is a great store, in terms of having a very comprehensive inventory of art supplies and friendly staff. However, the prices here are outrageous compared to their online store! I was shopping for the DB Premier Cotton Canvas Splined Gallery Profile Canvas, 36" × 48". Online, the price is $32.99. In stores, the retail price is $79.48, even after web rebate! I spoke with the cashier about this huge price discrepancy and they responded that they are unable to price match. Needless to say, I decided to make my purchase online, which was free shipping for orders $35 or more. I definitely recommend visiting the retail location to check out art materials in person but make your purchase online! read more

Lost my order. After spending two days selecting items and painstakingly entering them, one by one, into the cart they lost the order. That's right, the order simply disappeared from their system. American Express received a request for approval of the charge but Utrecht didn't process the card. No alert, no indication that there was a problem was sent to me. All that effort down the drain. Never again Utrecht. Bottom line, make sure that you get a confirmation when you place the order. read more

Pretty good diversity on art supplies. Customer service is overwhelming. They keep offering help when you are just looking at products. In few minutes 5 people approached to me. Employees are doing their work but unfortunately they end it up putting pressure on the customer and making you feel uncomfortable. Definitely one of the best art supply places for miles and miles. Utrecht is one of the main places to get good printmaking papers, so its nice to be able to go in person and buy stuff without paying shipping. The only place to shop for art supplies in the Washington-metro area. Plaza is overpriced, Pearl is gone and everything else is annoyingly crafty. There was another that predated these places that was warehouse style - and that's gone, too. Washington is not kind to art supply stores. read more

It's the only art supply store in DC, but luckilly it's a good one. It's conveniently located downtown (F the burbs) and the staff is helpful. The store is well stocked with pretty much everything you would need. The prices are reasonable, but not great, and the prices on sale items are good. This is not a bad spot really - They have a limited selection and the staff's knowledge is sketchy at times when trying to find products and they are a bit disorganized in general but considering they are the only game downtown they are decent. Seems like a nice little place. I went looking for frames, and they didn't have an overwhelming selection (they're more focused on, you know, actual art supplies). I found one that fit my needs and was very affordable. I made my way over to Utrecht Art Supply because they were offering discounts to artists who participated in Artomatic. I'm an amateur photographer, so much of the supplies Utrecht sells doesn't really apply to me. Nonetheless I was impressed by their selection. The stellar sales associates helped me find the supplies I needed for a class, and even looked at pictures I had on my phone of products I had lying around at home to tell me what they could be used for. I LOVE UTRECHT! I moved to DC last year and while touring my district neighborhood found utrecht just around the corner. I couldn't be happier! The utrecht staff does a superior job helping you find what you need. I completely disagree with pru below... maybe they were just trying to let you save money? I mean, sometimes it also depends who you ask or if the store is super busy. Their canvas selection is the best I've seen in DC art stores, because they have a lot of variety. As an architect/artist, I want to be able to buy quality stuff that's not so expensive. I find that Utrecht always has great sales and even when they don't you get great deals! Also, the frame selection is fantastic. I absolutely love their neilson-bainbridge frames! As for Plaza....no thanks! I've got my art store =) read more

I call Ed to check on the tracking and they inform me that when coming from the vendor it adds an additional day. That would have been nice to know up front. This is a great art store in the heart of a downtown district. Very nice and affordable frames (less than $20 11x14 frames that aren't tacky) for art or photos, and the staff is really cool. There was a cool art demo/class happening when we walked in, which was very helpful even as I was just passing by. Definitely recommend coming here if you are on a budget but don't want your art to look like it. read more

Usually visiting art supply stores fill me with both joy (yay art!) and dread. The dread stems from often experiencing one of two extremes - either the store is a huge chain with a somewhat unknowledgable and uninterested staff, a large Crayola section beset with children, and as Mikkela T. put it so well, "scrapbooking doohickies" everywhere. Basically, I feel like I am at the grocery store - there is plenty of selection but it is impersonal and more of a chore than a treat. The other experience is that the place definitely feels like an artist haven - so much so that as a hobbyist and not a pro, I feel out of place and a bit embarrassed at asking basic questions...especially the times I have been greeted at other establishments with major 'tude for doing so. Well Utrecht is the exception to both of these! It is small, but well stocked, with reasonable prices and a super convenient location near Metro Center. The staff was very friendly (I was politely asked to leave my back pack at the cashier when I entered but they didn't make me feel like a criminal about it) and knowledgeable - without being overly attentive (i.e., asking if I 'need help' every 5 seconds...) Overall, they have good selection, good location, and great staff - I will definitely be making return trips. read more

This store has a good selection of stuff and the in store service is fid, however, they have terrible service if they need to order things from other stores if they are out of stock. I needed 1/4" plexiglass rods for a project. They are suppose to call me on Friday and tell me whether the Baltimore store has them in stock, but they didn't call, and put in an order for 1 pack (I needed 3 packs, they didn't ask so I don't know how they decided I need one only). I went to the store again on Sunday to check on the order on Sunday and told them I need 3 packs. They said they will check with Baltimore and call me back, which again they didn't...long story short, i called Baltimore store and they didnt have enough and I ended up speeding to Baltimore tried to beat the 5pm closing time. If the dc store would make the calls like they promised, I would be able to make other arrangements and finish my project in time! read more

Really, this store is terrific. They are well stocked and the staff really knows about their products and they are friendly as well. Over the holidays this past year, my husband went in to buy me a few things. He wanted to get me a nice easel to work on for my watercolors. The girl working there really helped him pick out just the right one and I was so surprised and happy when Christmas came. Of course, like all art supply stores, their stuff is expensive, yet competitive with the prices of other stores that carry the same products. They also have a great customer discount that helps out a lot at the register. And they can order items for you that they do not carry which is also nice. I live in Alexandria, and I know of another store close by that offers many of the items I use, but we take the trip in to DC on the weekends because it is worth it in terms of customer service and the knowledge of the staff. read more

This place is great. I go through sketchbooks and pencils really quickly so I find myself at this place pretty frequently. The selection is no-nonsense and extensive. They carry a lot of brands you can't find in other places. The staff is friendly and helpful. Usually I go in for one specific item and get inspired when I browse around. One of the best art supply stores that I have ever shopped in! They have incredible sales and even their non sale items are very reasonably priced (think online prices or better). In addition to this, the staff is extremely knowledgable, having used the products themselves, very helpful in an unobtrusive kind of way, and just plain NICE! I am a political science major taking a general ed art class. Needles to say, I don't know the differences between the different brushes, paints, etc. But thanks to the helpful employees at Utrect, I was able to get everything my instructor asked us to get, and I saved some money too!
