I drove 45 minutes each way because an employee here claimed they had an item, or one just like it, that I need (nobody else did). They did not have it, and the suggested fix for me was to use something I already had at home. Never coming back. Oh and yes, now I'm 2 hours behind on something for absolutely no reason. I come here to get my art supplies since there's always a sale and it's much closer to where I live than Art Supply Warehouse in Westminister. Smaller than ASW but it has plenty inside, and it's organized well. Plus if you have a student discount card you can get $ off depending on how much you buy. Their return policy is good too, I had to return a sketchpad and exchanged it for something else I needed and they put the rest into my discount card to use in the future. Staff is knowledgeable and is helpful. They offered to carry my stuff to the register while I shopped around since my arms were full of sketchpaper. There's always a sale and if you sign up for their email you can get another discount, which really helped me when I needed to get some refill for some paint. On the more serious note I bought some daniel smith watercolor and masking fluid as well as a brush and I love how they turned out . The employees were so helpful and I got exactly what I needed. Utrecht ultimately saved my life. Needing new set of gouache, I was debating whether or not I wanted to drive out to Pasadena to go to Blick's (an hour drive from where I live D:), but I found this place instead and thank goodness, 10 minute drive and I got it in time for class the next day. When I walked in I noticed the how spacious and clean the place was. Everything was neatly placed in shelves and boxes and everything was simply easy to find. Paints and gouaches were all in one area and the canvas and illustration boards in another. The people working their were very friendly and helpful, they were able to point me in the direction of portfolios and sketchbooks. The prices are pretty amazing right now since they have a back to school sale starting last week and ends March 4th! I bought some $25 gouaches for $16! But their normal prices are still kind of average, not as cheap as the Art Warehouse though... :x But hey, this place is so much closer to home. They also have these reward cards that we can sign up for free, and they have specific ones for students that allows you to get an additional 10% off your purchases, but you must be a current student~! :) But the only thing I wasn't satisfied with was that they didn't carry different sets of color wheels when I needed a subtractive color wheel. :-/ Other than that, I think I found my new art store! :) read more

Awesome Art Supply Store! I decided to take a beginners drawing class this semester. One of my friends recommended that I come here to purchase the necessities I needed for my class. If you live within a reasonable distance from this store, I would definitely give it a visit before going to the more known stores such as Michael's and Joann's. For its limited space, the right amount and supplies are present (including drafting tables). Utrecht is not only the store name but the own brand of art supplies (better price, less selection). Almost every time I come into this store I leave frustrated and usually leave empty handed. Today I came in looking for large watercolor paper that I need cut down to A1 size, the staff told me they can cut board but not paper. Not sure what the reason is, but this seems silly considering that every other high end art supply store offers this. I came in a few weeks ago looking for stipple paper, both in pad form and single large sheets. When I asked the staff if they had any in stock, the two girls at the front just looked at each other and told me they weren't sure. Neither bothered to check inventory or ask a manager. I finally found it in the drawers which had boxes of new stock stacked all around them. They noticed me looking and one asked "did you find it" which I responded that I did. However, the boxes of new stock were stacked in front of the drawer I needed to get into and they watched me struggle to try to move them (boxes were heavy) and didn't offer any help. I finally got to frustrated I put my other items back and left the store. These are just two instances of frustrating experiences I've had here and I'm over it. I would rather drive 30 minutes to Art Supply Warehouse or just order what I need from another retailer online. I've been shopping at Blick for a long time but this location has frustrated me to the point that I don't even want to bother going in let alone giving the company my money. read more

The first time I was met with an attitude of better then and stuck up by the employees I thought, "maybe they are just having a bad day". Today, I had a problem related to the company's price matching program and was frustrated enough that I initially decided not to purchase the item that I had put on hold. And I left the store. But the store manager came out to me while I was sitting in my car (and checking prices at other art stores on my smartphone) and offered me a generous one-time resolution to the issue. I really appreciated how the store manager went the extra mile to help me, especially given that the item in question had a rather small dollar value. I come here for all of my art supplies and the store is top-notch in terms of supplies. Usually my visits are great but today they wouldn't take my $100-dollar-bill on a $60 purchase due to not having change and justifying it by saying "banks are closed on Sundays." Lol seriously!? I'm a business owner and that would never fly as an excuse on my watch. It's not my problem banks are closed. You should've planned ahead and had change ready for a busy day to get you through until Monday. Also the item I was looking for was stashed somewhere in the corner which was okay because someone knew where they were but had they not I would've left empty-handed because of improper stocking procedures. Super COVID friendly! They do their best to clean after every customer and they all keep checking on you. Aisle are pretty big enough for a stroller. Everyone is nice and keep their distance. They have a pretty good selection even though they are small. Been here twice with my baby and both times we felt welcomed. One of my friends goes to Art Center in Pasadena and everywhere we go that has a Blick store, we have to stop by just for him! I too have taken art classes for about a decade and I LOVE anything relating to art supplies. I used to have a huge collection for just pens and markers. Great place! I had ordered adhesive strips online and they didn't come in when I needed them but Blicks was the only place in the area that did! So thankful they wasn't too far from me and they had just what I needed in stock. I go here all the time when I don't want to wait for a package to come in the mail. The choices are somewhat limited and sometimes a paint color I want is out of stock. But it would be worse if this store wasn't here. It's hard to find a good art supply store outside of west LA or Pasadena. Everyone is friendly and say hi when you walk in so that is nice. Sometimes I get unwanted advice, like why I am using a particular brand or particular red. It feels a little like agism, but it could be my imagination. read more

I love this little store it's like one forth of Michael's or hobby lobby. This is a quaint little store. It's not the biggest art supply store I've ever been to, but it still has most of the basic things that you would need. We came during Halloween time, so they have cute little decorations and a little mask decorating area. Near the cash register, there's a cute little row of adorable little knick knacks that include little keychains, gadgets, and little packs of crayons and colored pencils. The store is nicely air conditioned, but the floors could use a little bit of cleaning. The employees all seem very happy and friendly, and it's clear that they are willing to answer questions. One thing that I would like to mention is that some of the items here are a little pricey, and can be found at a much cheaper price at some less specialized retail stores, such as Walmart or Target. I'd love to give them a higher review, because the staff is so helpful and the store environment is so appealing, but the selection isn't what it could be. I went there yesterday to but some Winsor Newton brushes - pretty standard brushes I've used for twenty years or so and they don't carry them. They carry their own brand which are similar, but not quite up to the same standard. I've found this to be the case with anything they put their name on. They will carry some other brands as a token gesture, but will keep them in very limited quantities. I've been a professional artist for longer than I'd like to admit. If I'm looking to try new materials, I want to do it on my own terms, I don't want to because I have no other choices. Being pretty much equidistant from Blick and Art Supply Warehouse, I usually end up going to Art Supply Warehouse which I can't stand. They have a superior selection, but the store depresses the hell out of me and the parking lot is a lot like a demolition derby. read more

Finally, another art store in OC besides Art Supply Warehouse. (sorry...Aaron Bros and Michael's are consistently useless and don't count as art stores). First and foremost, the staff at Utrecht are extremely helpful and friendly. In my case they didn't have something in store and were VERY quick to get it from existing stock at one of their other LA locations, next day with no extra cost. Just for this they deserve more than 5 stars. Regarding pricing, I find their items to be pretty high. But they do price match and I found them to be easy to work with in this regard. Always check on-line art stores, jerrysartarama.com or dickblick.com for on-line discounts. Utrecht even attempted to match Amazon.com. Surprisingly impressive. However, they do have a few short comings. They are smaller than Art Supply Warehouse and because of that, their stock is more limited. Also, I found their higher end brush selection and ability to attain items not normally stocked to be lacking and somewhat crippled due to what appears to be "corporate store policy" and/or "conflicting corporate partnerships". One area where Art Supply Warehouse excels is their ability to attain nearly anything, even if its not a regular stock item. But if one has to wait for it anyway, why not just order on-line. But if you're in a rush for something and live in Central/North OC, Utrech is extremely convenient off the 57 at Chapman and a very welcomed addition to the area. Perfect for Cal State Fullerton. If you're anywhere near Westminster or the Coast Community College area or even Long Beach, Art Supply Warehouse still rules OC with a knowledgeable staff, great new & used book & instructional DVD selection and a store that is probably 4 times larger. If you have time and don't mind the travel, I'd still go to Art Supply Warehouse. I give Utrecht 4 stars because their GREAT staff and convenient location. First off let me state that I am a frequent customer to this art store. I have been going here for a few years and never really had that much of a problem with their staff. However today when I went in I was yelled at by one of their staff members that goes by the name of Marcus. He was very rude to me, made me feel unwelcome, and yelled at me. I am comparing ASW & UTRECHT because these are the best art stores near me. Doesn't have much as Art Supply Warehouse (ASW), but they do have stuff that ASW does not carry. They are extremely friendly and helpful here. 10% off with the student card! It's free to sign up too. They give out free stuff sometimes. Prices are pricier then ASW, but they have their own Utrecht brand, which is a few dollars cheaper. :) read more

In a single purchase, they had all these problems/errors: (1) Blick will give you their web price when it's cheaper, but you have to remember each time, and if you forget to ask, nobody alerts you, even though their system obviously knows when the web price is cheaper. (2) The cashier didn't know how to do an exchange, so instead had to do a return of a product then a new sale of the same product, which resulted in me paying more for the same item, because it was no longer on sale. (3) The cashier didn't ring up brushes separately and instead just scanned the same brush over and over, charging me for the most expensive item multiple times. read more
