We stopped in on a rainy, Sunday night and were quoted an hour but waited almost two before having to call back and see that we were next, another 10 minutes until seated. I know it's hard to determine how long people will stay and was a host myself but it seemed to be a consistent issue based on other reviews and people we talked to outside. Because of the weather we ended up inside, where it was very loud, but our service was speedy and attentive despite still being quite busy. We visited Blaze after a hike for some beers, as recommended by someone we met during our visit. We were seated outside since we had our dog, and our table was right next to the hostess stand (which felt awkward since it was close quarters and she was not busy). The beer selection was great and the food menu had a decent amount of choices. We ordered the mussels to start, and then each got a lobster roll, and the food came out fairly quickly. Unfortunately, the mussels were not good at all. They were steamed with some chunks of garlic, but not in a broth or liquid of any kind. They came with a small bowl of liquid to dip them in, but it had zero flavor at all and didn't seem to have what the menu described (just tasted like we dipped them in water). We love mussels and get them often, and we expected good ones based on the restaurant location, but these were very underwhelming and didn't have any taste. Our lobster rolls were better- the buns were buttered and toasted, but the lobster had way too much of the lemon aioli, and it sat on a large amount of slaw in the bun. The flavor of the slaw took away from the taste of the lobster and it just seemed to be a filler to make the roll seem bigger and fuller. We wanted to order another round of beers as we ate our meals, and the waitress offered me a sample of one I inquired about. I got up to use the restroom while she went to get my sample and my boyfriend's beer, and while I was gone, I saw there were only 2 parties inside the restaurant and a few with us out on the patio. I returned to the table and had my sample, and waited for the waitress to return to check if I wanted to order that beer or something else. But she never returned, despite it clearly not being busy in the restaurant. We sat at the table for another 20-25 minutes before she came over to ask if we wanted to order dessert- no mention of the beer sample or if we wanted more drinks. Trying to get a table so we arrive before 5 only to find there is a 45 mins wait. However, there are at least 3 empty tables in the patio area alone and no one came to take those table at all. Had to ask for plates for dinner and napkins for dessert. The duck fat fries we ordered for an appetizer actually came after our entrée and were soggy and not very good. This placed seemed busy however so is every restaurant in Bar Harbor. The menu was extensive and the options sounded decent. My wife ordered a Blueberry cocktail and we split the Wagyu Nachos and the Chicken Tacos. The Nachos were very bland and the Wagyu steak looked more like Flank steak that was overcooked, unseasoned and there were way more chips then toppings. We ate less than half of the Nachos. The Tacos came out with a large portion of soggy, greasy fries and I could not even tell there were tacos on the plate as they were covered in some weird looking tannish, pink sauce with chopped red onions. The chicken looked more like 2 day old dried pork and the taste was simply strange leaving me with no desire for a second bite. . Finally, my wife's drink came out which, at $14, turned out to be another disappointment. As I was waiting for the bill, I noticed a family of 5 that were vacationing from Switzerland and we're obviously underwhelmed by their meal as well. They ordered two Pizzas that looked good until you tried to pick up a slice as there was absolutely no undercarriage, the dough looked soggy and the pizza was too top heavy. So sad to only give this place a one star. It really could've been so much better. We were so excited to come here for my mom's birthday last night, only to be INCREDIBLY disappointed. Service was horrific - our server, Marco, could barely give us the time of day, despite there only being maybe 3 other tables in the whole restaurant. He took forever to come by and take our orders for appetizers and drinks, and when he dropped off our entrees, we had to ask someone else to bring us silverware, because our server just disappeared. Between sparse check-ins at our table, he was just not to be seen. He spent most of his time chatting with people in the kitchen and cleaning (despite us being there well before they closed) - but apparently not the bathrooms! I went to use the restroom and noticed there was no toilet paper, soap, or paper towels (thank god I noticed this before I went in!). When I asked for toilet paper, a server went to the back and rather than grab an entire roll to replace it, just handed me a few already folded up squares of toilet paper??? Who does that!!! Then 35 minutes later my mom goes to the bathroom and has an absolutely identical experience. I'm sorry but I think it's a little weird that a server was pre-folding and rationing out toilet paper like that.... so odd. Just replace it! On to the food - appetizers and drinks were good, quality wise. They were out of lobster, but no-biggie - it's just that time of year. My mom and I each got an order of the seafood risotto. It was very yummy but the portions were HUGE! Like 4 cups of cooked risotto on each of our plates! A little upset that our server never even mentioned the egregious portion sizes - we could've split one plate between the 2 of us, easily. But I guess when each plate is almost $40, you want to sell as many of those as you can? Definitely made our bill much much higher. But definitely advise to get one and split it, unless you want leftovers for days. We are flying home today and will have to throw so much of it out. The highlight of the dinner was definitely the very nice server who sat us and ended up bringing us our silverware. He was very warm and welcoming, and was the only person who really seemed pleasant and happy to be there! Overall, what could have (and should have) been a lovely birthday dinner and last dinner in beautiful Bar Harbor was spoiled by an incredibly inattentive server. The food was pretty overpriced for what we got, and it seemed that a lot of people around us were unhappy as well. Food was good. Ambiance was nice. Just what a firegrilled pizza place should look and smell like. Open wood fire area visible to all. Lots of good alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks available. We had the fried brussel sprouts. They were delicious. Crispy sprouts with slighty sweet glaze. Raw jalapeños and peanuts mixed in. I was skeptical at first but the combo was really good. We had a grandmas pizza a kids pepperoni and a smoked wagu brisket sandwich. The pizza was okay the toppings were not great but the crust was really good even though the pepperoni pizza's crust got a little too black in a few spots. The sandwich was really good had a slice of cheeze slaw and pickles. Now I am rating the restaurant on food alone. From the food we got if the pizza was a bit better it could easily be a five star. My reviews are always food based and not service based. Service is a hit or miss type thing that can be great one night and not so great the next. That being said we had the worst service I have ever had at any restaurant ever. We had no refills of drinks or waters all glasses were dry halfway through the meal. We saw our server when we ordered and never again. Runners brought food and promised to come back and didnt. When a new server showed at the end of the meal 1.5 hours in we expressed this he said he would bring us what we needed but we just wanted out. OK, I keep going back to this place and expecting it to disappoint me but it never does. The beer selection is really top shelf, the service can be friendly and accommodating, and the food is really thoughtfully prepared, focused on bringing out seasonal flavors, and never over salted or season. If there were one quibble it would be that they should do a better job training their waitstaff in customer service as sometimes there is an aloofness or a "too cool for school" attitude that is rather offputting. That is not universal, but I have experienced this from one or two of their waiters and bartenders. Otherwise, a great spot for food in Bar Harbor and Bangor. read more

Service was very good, so I'll give it two stars for that. Attentive, knowledgable staff. Otherwise, I can't figure out why it garners so much praise. Our experience was terrible. The atmosphere was awful, and the food even worse. We were seated in the back corner, right in front of a giant TV playing a football game. I wanted a nice dinner with friends, not a sports bar. The people at the table behind us were watching the game, and kept shouting at the screen. It was all very unpleasant, and seemed at odds with being the type of restaurant where entrees are $30-$80. Then the game ended and Jeopardy came on. Seriously? We all joked that the menu was duck-themed, because most of the dishes seemed to include duck somehow. Which is fine... the menu items were interesting enough. The problem was that the food just wasn't good. I got the lobster roll, and the lobster was soggy and on a supermarket hot dog bun... it was McDonald's quality at bistro price. The ingredients in my husband's salad were anemic. The kids in our party got pizza, which was quite good. So I guess I would recommend it to someone looking for an gourmet pizza experience. We went with friends who had eaten there before, and said it was a very different experience. They were similarly disappointed in their entrees, and most of the food at the table went uneaten. Outdoor dining was a nice experience. Gas lamps kept the temperature perfect. Indoor atmosphere was fairly noisy. Would recommend the food. We ate here twice in the week we visited Bar Harbor over July 4th. The drinks are good but way overpriced, $14 a cocktail!!! Very little liquor, all mixer. I complained and a little more alcohol was added. The Steak Tacos(soft) were flavorful, and delicious. Would highly recommend these!! The Belgian Frites were greasy, and disappointing. Overall, it was fine. The poutine and fried haddock sandwich were delicious. The experience was not great though. My mom ordered a Connecticut style lobster roll (warm) after the waiter, I think his name was Casey, recommended it, but she was brought a Maine style lobster roll (cold). She asked the woman that brought the food if this was correct and she had no idea. By the time we saw Casey again, my mom had started eating it. Casey made a point of saying he put the order in correctly but said that was not what we were given. He apologized and said he would take part of the price of it off our bill. Had to wait about 20 minutes for a seat at lunch time, but that was ok, otherwise we could have sat at the bar, but just opted for a table instead. Ordered the poutine for the appetizer and it was the best that I ever had eaten. The fries were fried in duck fat, which makes them more flavorful that just plane old peanut oil. I had the blaze burger with smoked mozzarella cheese, BBQ sauce, bacon and an aioli as well. Very flavorful. The burger comes with fries, but I opted for the side salad since I had the poutine for the appetizer. The salad had roasted pepper, roasted Roma tomatoes and caramelized onions on it and it was perfectly dressed by not drowning in dressing. Blaze is a hot little place (no pun) so you might want to call ahead and get put on the list. We had a wood-fired pizza that featured chorizo, apples, bacon, and white cheese. Very tasty and thin crusted. Don't miss the bacon wrapped scallops with a maple syrup drizzle. And of course get an order of fries cooked in duck fat to share!
