I am a local. and I had never been here, until this past weekend. However, I know it from…read moretelevision. Not because it was featured on a news segment, or something similar, but because I saw it on an episode of Monk. It was used as a background prop. Funny what writing helps you remember, and hopefully what you remember is good stuff. Before I stepped into this bar, I expected it to be a Diver bar, in the grittiest sense, but I was wrong, it is a Dive bar in the most exciting of ways: It is a collection of tchotchkes (a fancy word for trinkets) that when admired as a whole and then independently give this place a whimsical personality. Imagine having a friend that when invited to a pool party wears a bikini with a fun print--- like cherries or flamingos, and is always down for a shot and playful mayhem. Being around this type of personality amps up the party soul of a moment because their vibe is that of a buzz-nurturer. Meaning that when I was in the bar, and all it has to offer, made me want to have a good time, regardless of what I carried in from the outside. The place gives immediate Tiki Bar vibes but does not carry the moment to full fruition. For example, in my pictures I show curtains with Tiki Idols, and a light fixture adorn with its own hula skirt but the Tiki motif does not transport one to a Luau where dancers sway as they wait for a pig to finish roasting. Instead, the Tiki vibes are sharply contrasted with posters and other keepsakes that are both aspiration and life lessons. For instance, one reminds us to leave your drama outside. Another hanging placard lists advisories that (straight) men should adhere when hitting on women. One of these is the fact that some women's sexual preference is NO. Another poster explains what happens when girls drink too much. One of the 10 outcomes is that women confuse the kitchen floor for their mattress when laying down. Like I said, all of these small and bigger touches combine to give this place a personality that draws one to have a good time. For me, there were two standout items in the place- 1) a jukebox and a 2) pool table. I was with three people that played pool better than me. One of them explained the purpose of a chalk mound. One is suppose to rub the place between their thumb and index finger to get chalk right in there. Then rub the chalk on the stick. This will create less friction which will help you shoot better. I did all that. This moment also allowed me and another member of my group to have a lot of hard wood jokes-- what are you going to do, we were having a good time at this place, and these jokes felt right. The jukebox was also free. I played Ariana Grande's version of Popular from Wicked and I felt the song. I was warbling loudly, and off key, and dancing because I was feeling the tune and the drinks. At the end, some of the people in the bar clapped and hollered. I went to put in another song I was stopped, the regulars were watching football on a Sunday, go figure. That is the thing about this bar, it is a regular's bar. People knew each other, people knew I was the first timer. Like when I spoke, two or three people answered my question. When I was looking for the key a customer directed me to it. So this place is definitely a place where regulars are at. And if you know anything about dive bar culture, regulars who know each other make a community. So you will need to navigate these dynamics if you attend. For instance, one of my friends was in the bathroom, doing the business of two. A regular opened the door and my friend was like, I am here, closed the door. The regular did not close the door, instead he made a joke about leaving the door just a bit open, while being a bro about it. I was horrified just being a witness. But between bar flies these type of jokes might be understood as joyful. But it would take me an alternate life to find humor in potty politics. I was introduced to the White Tea shot and it has become my new shot so this place left a mark on my taste buds. The shot at the end had this strong green tea taste. The prices were right too! I can't wait to go here again, when the party vibe calls me forth! Oh and it is cash only, unless you spend 40 and above then it is card appropriate.

Service, drinks , ambiance are great! Karaoke DJ Andy is super cool.We will surely go back.read more

Normally, I put Tapatio on my hash browns and use the eggs, bacon and toast to make a mini breakfast sandwich. Today, the red salsa was perfect for the hash browns. The green salsa on the eggs were so good that I did not make my usual mini breakfast sandwich. I ended up just eating the eggs with the green salsa. Service was extremely friendly. Before the end of my meal, the chef asked me if I enjoyed my meal. JDH is located in a small strip mall so parking is limited. I was fortunate enough to find parking around the corner in the residential area. JDH has a small dining area with about six tables. JDH definitely has that warm mom and pop dining feel.

Ample lettuce and a fresh tomato slice. The turkey they used was high quality and felt like real turkey meat vs. packaged turkey meat. I like when I can sense the grain of the meat. Delicious sourdough bread, toasted and crunchy. It's easy to eff up a turkey sandwich, but they didn't. The side of onion rings was crispy and golden, just the way I like my onion rings with a side of ranch. Ranch sauce was toothsome. You can get fries instead if you don't want onion rings. Their menu is also kind of small, but mighty. I am guessing their other menu items are just as decent judging by the responses. Service was friendly and personable. Felt like a mom and pop establishment that's a hole-in-the-wall size. Support small business in San Pedro. Their prices are reasonable too.

Hidden Gem in San Pedro Worth Every Mile!…read more If you live in Pedro or anywhere nearby, do yourself a favor and find Savoria Melange Bistro. Tucked away from the main drag at 19th and Pacific Avenue, this little mom-and-pop spot is the kind of place you stumble onto and immediately want to keep to yourself. The hours are limited -- Thursday through Saturday, 4:30 to 8:30 PM -- and honestly, my only real complaint is that they aren't open more days. Once you taste the food, three days a week just doesn't feel like enough. Happy hour runs Thursday and Friday from 4:30 to 6:30 PM, and it's one of the best deals in the area. House wines and beers are just $6, and the happy hour menu bites range from $5.95 to $11.95. The chicken kebab wraps alone are worth the trip. The empanadas are a must-try -- ribeye steak and cheese, ham and cheese, and Mediterranean varieties, two for $12.95. Incredible value for the quality. And every table gets complimentary artisan bread with house-made candied butter, which is such a warm, welcoming touch for a neighborhood spot like this. For dinner, we went all in on the specialty plates. The Beef Shish Kebab -- tender filet mignon chunks with basmati rice, hummus, and salad -- was outstanding. The Bakhtiari Kebab, a combination of chicken and beef shish kebab with basmati rice, hummus, and salad, was equally impressive. Both came with a house salad and left us completely satisfied. Our server Amy was a delight from start to finish -- warm smile, attentive, and genuinely made the whole experience feel personal. You could tell Chef Erik back in the kitchen puts real care into every plate. This is exactly the kind of local gem that deserves the community's support. They also offer catering, which I'll definitely be looking into. Go support this small business. San Pedro is lucky to have them... now, if they'd only open a few more days a week, life would be perfect.

The chicken was all cut up not a whole chicken breast which I should have seen as a red flag. But I tried to enjoy it, thinking positive and enjoy my night. I finished the beer and ordered a small beer but I started feeling really dizzy during this time. And not from drinking. If you've ever been roofied you know this exact feeling. Things are moving slower. You're spinning. You don't have full control. And you could pass out at any second. Thankfully I got home but it continued in a shower I took to try and wake up, but that didn't work. On my sofa I passed out. And woke up the next day still not feeling good. Still needing to lay down and needing more sleep. Another night passed where I slept early. Like I was knocked out. And today, Friday I finally felt like it was all out of my system. And this all happened because I went to Slip. This is not a fluke. It was not an accident. It happened to me and it can happen to you too. It can happen anywhere maybe, or maybe not. But what's for sure is it happened to me there. If you're with Slip and you're reading this, do not try and make me an offer to return. I won't. Ever.

We went back a week or so later on a Thursday night, we were seated promptly and then we waited for over 20 minutes to be acknowledged, offered water or to place our order. Instead we watched the server clean tables (there were plenty available), chit chat with staff at the bar and be in the kitchen for quite a period of time. No "I'll be right with you - nothing". I started with a cup of their beef and barley soup. My wife and I both make this at home from scratch and we're both impressed by theirs. My wife took a taste of mine and instantly ordered her own. Very rich and flavorful. I kept looking at photos of their take on chicken and waffles and knew I had to try it. Seriously epic and was good as it looked. They coated the chicken in a chili rub that gave it a sweet and spicy flavor when paired with their maple syrup. Served on top of a waffle and topped with an egg. I loved it and would probably order again on my next visit. My wife had the American plate which was your classic eggs, bacon, potatoes, and sourdough toast combo. High quality ingredients elevated it beyond your typical diner food. Drinks were great too. I had their house made bloody mary which had a nice kick to it. TLDR; It's expensive, and not worth the routine visit, but worth the one-time stop in to experience the festivities. The Miracle pop-up at The Ordinarie is somehow even more decorated and extravagant than you'd expect from a seasonal pop-up. The line looks long outside, as there are no reservations, but it moves quickly since they hold everybody to a pretty strict 2-hour time limit. The drinks are good, the cups are cute, and everyone is festive. It's an all-around fun experience.  I think because of this, you do pay a premium price tag for food and drinks that are just good or okay. I think it's something that is worth the visit if you've never been and you enjoy getting into the Christmas spirit. I think that outside of the pop-up, The Ordinarie is a fun spot to check out in Long Beach. It't not a pillar of the food scene if you're a tourist, but it is a good, late night spot if you work in the industry nearby. They have a great late-night menu with a killer smash burger.
