I've come here a few times now to get a good idea of the different vibes. Weekends with a band or DJ are pretty fun! I went early & danced the night away, then again it may not have been the music, but the drinks. I've come here for a pint during the day when it's pissing rain. Sitting at the front is comfy, not too $, & easy to chat. Sunday is guaranteed best value with $5 Guiness....you heard me right. That alone should warrant a huge cheer from the crowd. It's a great, safe place to have drinks--for some reason, i just feel safer here than the mayhem that can erupt on granville, agree? lol the irish feel, live band, it's a great place to hang without the pretentiousness. Surprisingly, it's part of Dine Out Vancouver, so I may consider giving it a try. I'm gonna say I'm a fan, based on the fact that I enjoy the live band (great if you want to listen to random jigs thrown in with some pop and rock), the service is friendly, and there is plenty of space to get off the dance floor for my left-footed friends. Not sure on the price (I'm never paying somehow) but my cheap buddies always want to hang here for the pitchers. Blarney Stone is a terrible joke of a drinking establishment. Honestly. If you want a place that commits highway robbery with its cover charges (a jokes concept for this kind of place in itself) and drink prices, then look no further. The bar itself has an atmosphere that can be described as consistently below par. The drink specials are lame shooters with barely any alcohol contained within, and their beer tastes consistently watery. But I suppose the weak drinks are consistent with the majority of its clientele and waitstaff, which generally made me feel like I had entered a timewarp back to high school, where all these washed up suburbanites and underagers still maintained some modicum of significance. The interior of the bar itself is a failed attempt at charm. I can see what they were going for with the wood everywhere, but this choice of material has only facilitated the soaking in of spilt beer, and as a result, everything in the place always smells like piss. It doesn't matter where you are. The bar. The washroom. The tables. The dance floor. Next to anyone in the place. PISS. on every surface. And I would forgive this fact if Blarney were cheap and/or fun. But it's neither. Last time I went there was a man who looked 85 playing an accordion and a bunch of people doing a jig on stage. Maybe this is just some sort of caucasian ritual I don't understand, but forgive me if I don't find this to be appropriate drinking music. It was no fun. Nothing about this place is worthwhile. Like the food, pub service is leagues off of anything you would find at any sit down establishment. Here expect lengthy waits; and pretty servers who wander the room with a hardness, acquired from nights spent dealing with drunken customers and advances not wanted. Though with the above in mind I would question the flirting for tips and short plaid, school girl skirts. Our server was cold and stone faced. She would multitask, talking our request then checking in on the table next to us, before proceeding to fulfill our request. As a result two glasses of water made its way to our table 10 minutes after the third request for them was made. Would I go back? - No. By chance I came back tonight, after 7 years of not even considering it. There was nothing present tonight to ever drive me to return. But I was intrigued at the Irish menu option and considered ordering authentic Irish dishes like their stews and "colcannon", a Irish staple made with mashed potatoes, kale, cream, and butter. But after the disasters in classic and easy pub fare, I am sure I would be have only been disappointed. Though in the greater scheme of things, if you have enough booze in you everything is and tastes great. Maybe that is the way to go. Drink drunk before you decide on what to order. Would I recommend it? No. The tap poured beers common to any pub or casual restaurant along the streets of Gastown. The wings were the worst I have ever had. And it was all below average at best. You would be better off picking up a six pack and a frozen dinner; and heading to your couch instead of a barstool here. read more

This if the fifth part in a five part evening. Part four was The Irish Heather. We walked out of The Heather and debated what to do. At 2:20 I walked up to the door man and asked what it would take for me and my friends to get in (hinting that we would like to get past the line). He asked what time it was, I told him, and he indicated to wait until 2:30 so we could avoid the cover. We hung out on the street and watched the drama of a couple being ejected. I laughed out loud, hard and maniacally as I normally do, at some bar star (at the Blarney of all places) threatening the Blarney staff that she has "friends" and knows "cops" that will make their lives "difficult". She was mildly called a bitch by one staff member, and she complained to the manager. I'm surprised she wasn't called worse, since I wouldn't have held back about how much of a c**t she was. I talked to the doorman after she left and suggested he encounters about ten or so like her in an evening. Turns out it was about eight that night. He let us in a few minutes early without cover. We walked in and immediately sat at the front bar. It was great service in that we had two bartenders and one busser for us. We ran into the manager from The Heather and had a drink with him. We were served pretty much until 3:00. The bartenders didn't have an issue with us sitting and enjoying our drinks after they turned the lights on. However, a bouncer came by about 3:10 and gave us a ten minute warning. As we were heading out, we asked another bouncer about where we could keep the party going. He suggested a place on Granville. We hopped in a cab and were served another couple of rounds. but I will be keeping it a secret for the time being. I don't want to ruin it for those of us who know about the place. read more

I ended up here for dinner one Friday night when my friend and I couldn't get in anywhere else. I'm not a big fan of the new renovations. I liked this place better when it was a dirty crazy little bar where you would go when you really wanted to make out with someone! It feels like it is trying to be chic but fails terribly. The waitresses were horrible and barely gave me the time of day. They would ignore me as they flaunted their massive breasts and little skirts in front of all the male customers. We ended up staying to listen to the live band which seems to be the only thing that hasn't changed at all. Live Irish music is just so danceable. The only problem is the dance floor is full of 19 year old punks who can't handle their alcohol and ended up puking everywhere. Sigh. read more

COCKROACHES, BRUTAL STAFF, PRICES HIGH = DO NOT GO THERE!!!! As I approached the bar with 3 female friends the bouncers started whistling and making cat calls at the girls making them extremely uncomfortable. If we hadn't been meeting people there we would have walked right by, however talking to the bartender I discovered that the guy out front making inappropriate comments was in fact the owner of the bar. While talking to the bartender I also noticed a group of cockroaches on a plate of half eaten food sitting on the bar. The bartender laughed about it and said, "ya we have a really big problem with cockroaches but that's noting you should see the size of the rats in here!" At that point in time we paid for our overpriced drinks (did not drink them) and found our friends to all leave as a group. The crowd in there was grossly over served (guys walking around drinking from a jug of beer and no glasses) and incredibly young. It felt like we were at a houseparty with a bunch of highschoolers drinking for the first time. I am pretty sure half of the girls in there were no where near 19. The band members are so old they look like they could loose someone at any given moment (80+ years each) and I could write an entire review on the disgusting puke ridden state of the bathrooms alone. I will NEVER go back and neither will anyone in my party, the owner should concern himself with the cockroach problem instead of focusing all of his energy on creeping out girls. read more

As an Irish man I'm embarrassed by this place.. $12 cover on Friday, they do not accept debit cards and they have a $20 minimum spend on credit cards. Fairly obvious they want cash only to avoid paying tax! The staff taff inside have a huge ego problem too (except the door man who was a nice dude).. At the end of the night an 3 idiot "bouncers" (one who was an Asian guy called Mike) LITERALLY pulled a chair from underneath my girlfriend as she was finishing her drink to hurry her up without evening asking her first. Anyways, it turned out to be one of the best places I have visited in Vancouver, although I am practically a newbie to this town but who cares. What a ghost of its former self. I signed up to write this. I just had a conversation with some school mates about the weekend events. The blarney stone has gone under renovation since the last time I was there about 5 or so years ago. The Staff is nothing more than your usual bartenders and servers. Nothing spectacular I tipped a 5 on a pitcher I bought from the bar and didn't tip the second time when I bought a single pint from the server because i figured 5 bucks on 20 is a fairly decent tip (25%). Next thing you know she is no where to be found, and when I do put in my order it took a solid 25 minutes to get another pint. I know from experience, that serving, isn't that hard. Not to mention giving the pint to someone without sloshing a bunch out of the glass onto the tray. I guess what really pushed me to write this was the huge fight outside while I was heading to the skytrain with my friends. I remember these guys yelling in the street when I was smoking, and seeing them inside. They should have been kicked out far before anything happened. They were so drunk that half the time they were yelling they weren't even making sense. Mouthing off bikers and rough housing outside. This bar serves these people, then keeps serving them, and then doesn't even protect their patrons? What kind of business model is this? Drink till you drop and fend for yourself? These guys jumped an older man in his early 40s, it must have been 5 drunks around 20 years old beating on this one helpless man, 5 guys on 1. The bar did nothing to help this guy! There were 2 or 3 guys outside just watching this unfold and a guy at the back door who kept asking if i was leaving and not a thing was done about it by them. Luckily there was another man that ran in and pulled some people off of the beating so the guy could run away. If it wasn't for this bouncer, FROM ANOTHER BAR, the 40 year old might not have any teeth today. It takes balls to jump into something like that, and is definitely selfless - I know for a fact I will be stopping in at the other Irish Bar - although I don't remember the name it's right next door. It looks much classier and has a bouncer outside that is not only friendly and funny, but stuck up for the underdog. I will never be back at this dirty, grungy bar that stands by while their bartenders over-serve causing violence in the streets. ahhh yes, the Blarney Stone. My friends took me out one night, and they said it was a never fail and boy were they right. I have never gone a night where I didn't have fun. The sticky floor with beer, the bartenders hitting on you, and of course the old Irish band, honestly who wouldn't have fun?? and I'm not being sarcastic either!! I even celebrated my birthday there and I got on stage (even though I don't think I was supposed to) and danced with a random girl, also danced on the bar benchs and was told nicely to get down. Okay - since Three Lions Pub didn't have the best TV setup during our last football outing - my friends and I went to Blarney Stone to watch England implode against Germany. My buddy was excited since BS (teehee) was touted as 'England House 2010'. It certainly had the right atmosphere with the crowd even more riled up and the host being the most vocal fan in the crowd. Also, there wasn't a bad seat in the house as there were plenty of TVs everywhere. However, a few sticking points with me: (1) We had a 'priority guestlist' - which meant we got in before people that just showed up without reservations. However, there was plenty of space and way less crowded than Three Lions - the reason? $5 cover charge. REALLY? You're gotta squeeze people for a cover even when they are showing up at 6AM to eat your crappy breakfast? That leads me to the second point... (2) The $9 English Breakfast was laughably lame - one small piece of banger sausage, rock-hard bread, 'grilled' tomatoes that looked microwaved, mushy beans, a couple of eggs and some half-decent home fries. Sure Three Lions was more expensive, but their English breakfast beat the pants off this one. A humiliating defeat coupled with a crummy breakfast (even for bar food) leaves a bad taste. (3) So, I know it's a bar - but it's 7AM and people want coffee. After our first round of refills, I asked the waitress for more coffee and she informed me that the coffee machine was broken and they were boiling water to put through the machine. No problem - I can wait. When I came back from the half smoke break - all our coffee cups were bussed away and no one else in the bar got more coffee. Other than the coffee thing, there were plenty of staff on hand and they were very attentive and quick to correct when they mixed up our orders (for some reason, some of our plates were missing bacon). A pretty good atmosphere and the paparazzi even showed up to get comments and reactions from the crowd after the game. However, lame food and even lamer cover charge. Reading the other reviews, it seems like cover charge is the norm here. A shame really as some of the advertised drink specials looked cheap and the decor and atmosphere has potential. Went last night with a group of friends for a birthday; had dinner and drinks early in the evening. Our server was attentive and the food was all around good. It was very busy early on because there was a large pub crawl going on with university students. We later went to get a drink from the bar at the front and the bartender was absolutely miserable. He said "apparently chucky cheese is closed tonight" in reference to the large student group. He was blatantly upset about the crowd and was very rude to the rest of the patrons. As the night progressed, it was busy as usual. The security needs to be improved, there were several intoxicated and aggressive men on the dance floor that were harassing many women. I looked to find a security guard to report it, but I literally could not walk over to them because the bar was so overcrowded. The band is always top knotch wth a lively dancefloor, however the dance floor was literally covered in broken glass. There was nobody clearing drinks off tables or cleaning up the dance floor. It was a mess. When we were leaving later in the night, our previous server came up to us outside and asked for a cigarette (who was now wasted). None of us in the group smoke, so we politely her we did not have any and she scoffed and walked away. Overall, I used to love the Blarney Stone. However the overall service has seriously declined. I would no longer recommend this place! read more

The redo of this longtime go to Gastown place has a comfortable decor - they kept the right elements this way. The dart boards are in a super awkward place or we'd play there more. Their tofu, curry, and British fare are all decent. Service is hit and miss though and they need to serve beer in proper glasses! read more

I was there with my friend monday because it was our day off and we wante to drink beer. waitress who is obviously was born in Canada but originally from Asia, she served 1 pint of beer with coctail glassess. Did the Dine out Vancouver menu food was very good wife really liked the Mac n Cheese bites. My Double Jameson n Coke was lacking the Jameson and with only 6 other patrons in the place it took 2 hours from placing order to getting check. I heard that this place use to be a hole in the wall - grundgy, dirty, and not my kind of place. I wasn't sure what to expect when I was told that a bunch of friends were going so I wasn't going to say no.. besides it would be an experience right? There was a mini lineup just after 10pm and there was a cover charge of $10 - boo! There was live music playing as I walked and it seemed pretty festive inside. The live music didn't suit my tastes in the beginning but I thought what the heck - i love live music! The bartenders were nice and drinks weren't shabby either! After the band went off... the top 40 music came on and I was loving it! I wasn't paying attention to the back the bar but the place is HUGE. The dance floor is a large space and many long tables for groups to sit at. Screens are available for TV watching and there is also an upstairs with more booths and tables for people to enjoy the entertainment. I was quite surprised at the overall size of the space and service and I just wish that there were more friends who would want to go and dance with me.. because the people I was with wanted to just "chill" which is cool too. Niamh was one of the best servers I have had anywhere in a long time! I had a going away get together there last week and we had such a good time. I had emailed about making a reservation and didn't get an email back so I think they were a bit surprised when we showed up HOWEVER Niamh was serving us and was an absolute legend! She was so kind and patient with our large group. She was serving a group of about 40 people on her own and she was still super efficient and above all else kind! The place is massive so no one will try and rush you out. 5 bucks for a true pint of Bud. This is their cheapest beer on a Tuesday. I like the 2 dollar sliders. Great place on a Thursday night for food, drinks, and football. Had great service too from beautiful servers costumed in kilts. Diverse menu; we had Jamison's Shepherds Pie and pesto pizza. Both very good. Th Shepherds Pie was served with herbed mashed potatoes and a delicious gravy. Thursday night specials included discounted wine by the glass- the only place in Gastown I found offering that. This is a classic Irish Pub except for the table service- it was top notch. During the day thus bar is a relaxing spot for a beer. The bar staff seem to be about 50% Irish and there is another Irish place next door. Who knew Vancouver was such a destination for the Irish diaspora. In the evenings they bring out the fence for the weekend crush charging $12 in to one of BCs hotspots. The band was great but it's definitely a younger crowd that are apparently hip enough to like music from the 70s 80s 90s. The Guinness is also served properly and its a decent pint. read more
