Stopped in for lunch while travelling to San Marcos. So glad we did. The food was delicious. There were three of us and we all had the fried catfish but with different sides. Awesome fish. Okra was very good as was the hushpuppies and onion rings. Green beans were seasoned to perfection. Our waitress, Cheyenne, was very attentive and personable. This is quite the spot, packed for lunch. Third time have been here and won't be the last. They have good wholesome food at good prices, and really enjoy the ambiance and down home feel. The first time I came was turned around at the door by management I think. Only because the power went out to whole block of restaurants. Since then have come back two more times! Have had both the chicken fried steak, which is house made and well above average in taste, and the beef tips lunch special, which had a similarly good flavor. Both times the sides I've had were OK, nothing stellar nor particularly bad but could tell they added spices and flavorings to make it tasty. Wait staff and everyone I've dealt with is pleasant, wait times are not long, even when busy. Came here for a Friday dinner by myself. The menu looked good and the reviews were great. I asked for a seat near the TV, since the news was on. The special was Blackened Ribeye with 2 sides. Loaded baked potato and salad were my choices. My tea came out quickly, followed by my salad and a small loaf of bread. Great surprise! The rest arrived after I finished the salad, and my waitress kept my tea full. About half way through, I realized that someone behind me was smoking. Needed a bite to eat driving home from San Antonio back to Houston, somewhat limited on dining options and didn't want fast food. Really wanted breakfast but settled on lunch and Blake's opens at 11 for lunch & dinner. Old historic building, tucked back in a sleepy town. The restaurant does have a smoking section which kind of hits you once you walk in the door but we arrived before a crowd. Waitress recommended the chicken fried steak so ordered that and a few appetizers. The onion stack was good, and the fried mushrooms were what earned my praises. I got a large order and it was more than we all could finish. But they were mega tasty, some of the best I've had. They had a kids menu and we ordered a pizza which was like one you could microwave at home but the appetizers filled us so it wasn't that big of a deal. Get the fried mushrooms! read more

Decided to give this place a chance even though some reviews weren't that great. I'm glad we stopped. Although they recommend the chicken fried steak which looked delicious we both got burger with fries, Caesar salad and fried pickles. Burgers were very tasty. Nice little cafe have only had one bad service here ever in all the years it's been here. That's a great record don't know if I can say that about any other place I go regularly. The burgers are great,chicken fried steak is real good,the steaks are awesome and my favorite anything blackened here is tops. The fried pickles or onions rings are two pf my favorite starters but the chicken wings are really good also. Service has always been superb except for that one time. The breakdown from start to finish as I am experiencing this business. Building: love the old small town downtown building, but overall look other than that is horrible, people write on the walls, and not pretty. The steak is a cheap cut of meat, has an ok buttery flavor but was cooked too fast so the fat was not rendered. I'm in no hurry folks, I want quality not speed at a sit down restaurant. We love Blakes! Good old-fashioned food and environment. My husband thinks they have the best chicken fried steak around and I love their fried shrimp! Their onion rings and friend mushrooms are awesome! Service is always really great too, which makes it even more enjoyable. The only downside is that they allow smoking in the building, which is very unhealthy, especially for those of us with kids. I could not see myself waiting 2 hours for BBQ so dashed into Blake's for a nice sit down bring my food to my table dinner.... and I am so glad I did!! My server was a pleasant young man that took my admission of being tired, hungry and cranky seriously and delivered my tall glass of brewed tea and warm loaf of bread quickly. (He may have saved the town that night!) They had a chicken fried steak special that night so I ordered that. Crispy. Tender. Perfectly seasoned with enough gravy for every bite but not so much to soak, or overwhelm the entree. If you just want to eat good home style cooking, Blake's has you covered. Waitress (all 3) had NO mask on nor did the cooks. Effective June 3rd, 2020 the Governor of Texas has mandated that masks be worn in most public places. As of this writing (February 28, 2021) the mandate has not been lifted. The test positivity rate in Caldwell County Texas is very high suggesting that cases are being significantly under-counted per data collection on February 2021. Under most of the counters along the baseboards where the drinks are served are filthy dirty with food collections dust and dirt seemingly has not been swept, mopped nor sanitized since Covid-19 started. It was so unhealthy to see a mask-less local person come into the restaurant to gather his own drink and walk throughout this facility. The bathroom has a stinky smell in it. The food was served with cold mashed potatoes. When the bread is bought to table is just on an open plank board and not covered. This is very risky environment to get sick. So glad she did! I had the Chicken Fried Chicken with mashed potatoes and onion rings. It was hands-down the best Chicken Fried Chicken I've ever had!! It was piping hot and absolutely delicious! Let me start by saying the majority of everything on the menu is fried. Even if you don't select one of the many fried options, you will smell like you did; so, be aware. We started with fried pickles and they were great. The homemade ranch is excellent. My girlfriends had the recommended chicken fried steak and said it was delicious. They also enjoyed the fried okra. I tried the catfish, which you can get grilled if you prefer. I should have asked if it was farm raised catfish as that is how it tasted. Best Chicken Fried steak and Prime Rib for the best price anywhere. I live in Los Angeles but am from Texas and when I come home to visit family in Austin I always try to make it down to Blake's. It's a great place to go for really good food at unbelievable prices where you get to avoid all the hipsters, pretentious foodies, and over-inflated menu prices you find at all the trendy restaurants in the city. The smoking section sucks, but it really kind of adds to the overall charm if you can tolerate a few stubborn cowboys having a smoke in the other side of the building. read more
