I had been looking for someone to cut my hair without simply using an electric cutter. Jay was recommended to me by my wife. We are now living in East Haddam and although it's a half hour ride to Blades it is well worth it. Jay is terrific at cutting men's hair with a comb and scissors. He is terrific. **just went here tonight for a cut and color and manicure in preparation for my wedding this weekend! I LOVED both the people who worked on me, Alecia did my nails (such a perfect job!) and the awesome Marcus did my hair! BOTH did an amazing job.....I was so happy when i left! For those that dont know I am pretty ill and i dont get to get out much, nor have this kind of pampering....this was such a treat (and i was so lucky i had a gift certificate from last year so it was a real treat!).... the experience was very pleasant all around....The one tiny complaint i had was that the nail salon part is upstairs and there is no elevator....I use a walker or canes so its very hard for me to get upstairs....when i told Alecia the nail tech that i had a really hard time she IMMEDIATELY TOLD ME TO NEXT TIME LET THEM KNOW WHEN I MAKE THE APPT, and she WILL DO MY NAIL DOWNSTAIRS!!!! So, how awesome is that that they would completely accommodate me like that???? VERY COOL! Most of the employees here have worked for him (Jay the owner) for years and years! They don't know how to cut men's hair. I came to Blades because I needed a stylist to help me look stylish and sharp again. I'm not really into hair or fashion, so I don't have the experience or vocabulary to describe exactly what I need. I didn't come for a haircut, I came for styling. I got neither. She didn't know how to construct a sharp men's hairstyle. I came home and my wife said that it looked like I hadn't even had my hair cut. It's just a mop. This is why corner barbers have signs that say "we fix expensive haircuts." What a waste of time and money. Otherwise, the facility is nice and the people are friendly. read more

I have been a client of Blades for well over 15 years now and I will never go anywhere else! From the moment you are greeted, you are given every attention and courtesy by all of Blades staff. One of the the things I hate most about Yelp is its unfairness!! A company will literally have hundreds of satisfied and thoroughly happy clients and have less than desirable Yelp profile due to the few unhappy ones that post to Yelp. Meanwhile Yelp loves to filter out some of those amazingly good reviews and email business owners about how. for a fee, they can get those filtered reviews worked in to increase your ratings. Beware! And by all means do not rely exclusively on Yelp for your business choices. With this disclaimer stated, onto my review. I have been a customer of Blades for a solid 10 or more years. I come and go because I live quite a distance from the salon. However, when I want a drastic change or something uniquely me, Blades is the only salon I will visit and I almost always choose its owner, Jay as my stylist. To him, after a discussion, I typically allow full creative liberty l. Let me tell you this was only a blind act of trust the first time when I fell in love with his cuts, the salon and the professional and kind demeanor of every staff member I have ever encountered there. As a result I have become known as the woman who always has amazing hair; a thing I can take zero credit for except in my choice of salons. I hadn't visited the salon in about two years because again, I live over an hour away. I go be a local stylist who did a fair job of keeping hg my great ones and trimmed but had grown bored of the same haircut and style at every visit, even when I asked for change. Without hesitating I picked up the photo be and called Blades. They happened my fit me in for a cut with the owner very modestly priced at 80.00 within a week of my call. I walked out of that salon looking and feels by like a rock star. I'm have had manicures, pedicures and color treatments at Blades and each was a wonderful experiences I simply cannot rave enough about this salon. The entire model is based around be growth and keeping up with current trends. The locale, set inside of a Victorian house in the historic district of Wethersfield, enhances the experiences and takes you beyond a cut and style into the realm of day spa. In all the years I've been going to Blades it is the only salon I have seen every single slinger walk out of looming like the cover of a magazine and it is the ONLY place u will ever recommend without reservation to everyone I know. read more

The front desk is also very friendly and easy to deal with. I grew up in Wethersfield and this has always been my favorite salon. Since then, I have moved to NH, NJ, and MA. Blades is by far the best salon I have been to- which is saying a lot since I've tried all the top salons in each area I moved. I always make my appointments semi-last minute so I always go to the hairdresser who has an opening and not a specific person. I went here upon the recommendation of a girlfriend and after a not-so spectacular four visits at an equally expensive salon just across the river over the Putnam Bridge in Glastonbury. I passed by it at first because it has an unassuming sign and there is parking in the rear. I walked into this old historical home and loved the foyer. Came into a large reception area and from minute 1 was a very friendly and positive experience. I got a haircut with Kaitlyn, whom I highly recommend. It was only $5 more than my last salon, and though a bit more than I'd like to pay normally, my hair looked great! Finally. She knew how to cut it on the first visit. The long luxurious shampoo with scalp massage was stellar. I looked so cute and feminine when I left I almost danced out of here. And I did something quite unusual for me, which was book Kaitlyn 5-6 weeks out for another haircut. I don't go crazy for hair color in a salon but I will treat myself to a decent haircut. And it's worth every red cent at this place. Def will be back. Def will recommend to my friends/family/colleagues. ---------- Just had my fourth haircut at this place. Still love my hairdresser Kaitlyn and met Luis who is the massage therapist/esthetician. Massages here are very reasonable - $60 for 60 minutes. Quite the steal. I might be moving from cut to color and massage. I feel good to give this business my patronage. I also met the manager who is really cool and fellow French Canadian. Super friendly staff here. ----------- Still going there after about 6 months. A hairdresser friend of mine kept raving about my cut. Kaitlyn is the bomb. Still scheduling my cuts 5-6 weeks in advance. I'm hooked. Ed Coutu, the manager and co-owner is so NICE! Seriously. I can't get over not only how client-centric this place is but how nice everyone is. Why didn't I know about this place 5 years ago?! ----------- Sadly, my K left but I went back to the salon and have tried several other hairdressers there and you know what...all give pretty good cuts. I have been going to Blades for the past 3 years. They are my one stop shop for cuts, coloring, and waxing. Joann is amazing and makes you feel very comfortable (a true feat during a brazilian wax). Whitney gave me the first layered haircut that I have EVER loved. The pricing is based on how "senior" a stylist is, so the pricing isn't as straightforward as other places might be, which is my only complaint. read more

When I was going through rehearsals for a local community theater production of the classic musical Carnival, I told my fellow castmates that after the show ended I was going to get a message. Blades Salon staff are Awesome! Here's a picture of Makaila, my daughter, with Jen. Makaila's hair was like a rat's nest since it was so curly and knotty. Jen spent 5 hours on her hair with Redken Smoothing Treatment, cut and blow dry. Makaila has very thick hair and lots of it! I warned Ed, wonderful manager, about her hair...and I wasn't kidding. Everyone loves her new "look." Everyone has been taking a double take since they don't recognize her! The Redken Smoothing Treatment was amazing! My mom and I had wonderful, relaxing massages by Luis. What a nice guy with a great personality. He made me laugh. Best hair salon. I've been here for both hair, makeup, hair-styling, and eyebrow waxing. All were amazing experiences. My hair always comes out amazing when I get my haircut, I am never dissatisfied with them. They offer you drinks while waiting which I think is a nice touch. When washing your hair they take the time to give you a massage and they always listen to what you want in a look. I got my makeup and hair done for prom and it came out perfect, they use amazing products that smell so good and they definitely know what they are doing. Plus the owner (Jay) and stylists are so nice! I can't say enough good things about them. Sad to say I will be moving and will have to find a new stylist soon. read more

Love Blades. Love Laura. Love the front desk people. Love the owner. My hair looks the best it ever has--and with minimal work on my part. My experience at Blades (over about 4 years) is the best I have experienced, and I have used probably 50 salons over the years, so this is no small compliment. I have paid more and gotten less many times. Laura is as interested in my looking good as I am, and I am so appreciative. On the few occasions I walked in without an appointment and took whoever was available, I also had a great experience. And here is something to think about: when you get a really good haircut, you don't need as many haircuts because your hair looks good longer. When your stylist only sells you what you need, you spend less on products. When there are frequent sales and deals, you save money. I went to Blades figuring that I would spend more, but hoping it would be worth it. Guess what? I now spend LESS money per year on my hair. read more

Though the location is beautiful - nothing else about Blades is worth the money. I went to get my haircut a few times and bought the shampoo they told me I should use. I started using it, but couldn't figure out why my hair began falling out in clumps. I went back to my normal shampoo and the problem was solved. I got married in October and originally booked my bridal party to get their hair and makeup done at Blades; the first problem started when they wanted to charge me almost double what I had read on the website; then I went in for my (expensive) makeup and hair trial and it was a DISASTER. My makeup looked like I was going to the circus instead of going to get married, even after I told her I didn't do a lot of makeup and wanted to look natural. Then the hair! I wanted a simple low bun. Nothing fancy, just simple and pretty. Well, their "master stylist" Marjorie told me that "my type of hair" (i.e. straight and medium-length) wouldn't be able to do that - this is after one hour and 3 attempts - then she brought Jay over - the esteemed and overrated owner; he made my hair even worse after teasing it so it was a frizzy mess! Then he told me I'd have to come back and pay for another appointment if I wanted to give it another try. THANKS ANYWAY! I immediately canceled and they lost out on a lot of money - he didn't even offer to give me another trial free of charge. Guess the economy didn't hit them too hard - can't imagine how though. Worked out ok since I found Anthony Nicole Salon in West Hartford who did an AMAZING JOB! read more

Normally I would give Blades more stars but this 1 star is to warn people not to get Kim as a stylist. I have only had her a few times but she ALWAYS cuts my hair too short. It is extremely frustrating. Ed is always pushing her when my regular stylist is unavailable. Other people I have met that had Kim style their hair said the same thing...loved Blades but wished they never had their hair done by Kim. Not to mention she is very nosy. She asked me a question that clearly indicated to me she was reading my texts over my shoulder. She needs to mind her own business. Employees current and former don't think Kim is anything special as a stylist. I agree with them. I think Ed has rose colored glasses when it comes to Kim. After the last two cuts I have had with her I am seriously considering going somewhere else to have my hair done. It is a shame because I have been with Blades for a long time. read more
