She gave me a beautiful Bob cut and a straightening treatment in June. It is now nearly January and I am still so happy with the results. I originally had difficulty with styling until I purchased a blower brush and can style with one hand. Wendy did a wonderful job and I continue to be thrilled. This salon has adapted the chair rental business model, which I was a little skeptical about at first, but it worked out just fine. I look forward to coming here for as long as I live in the area. The check in process was a little weird because there was no receptionist on the day I came in, but that was no big deal. The lack of conversation makes it awkward as I try and trying to out where to direct my gaze as I'm sitting directly in front of a mirror facing myself. Eventually I become too wrapped up in wondering if my hairdressers had a bad day and is now taking it out on my hair of hair to care where I'm looking. Fortunately, at Defining Styles I've never had this problem. The hairdressers are friendly, dynamic and make you feel like they're really psyched to be cutting your hair. Most importantly however, they really know what they're doing and they listen (if I could italicize that, I would). When I request to have only have a few inches taken off my hair, I leave with my hair the length I wanted. No surprise bobs here! The stylists here make sure to discuss what you plan to do with your hair before they start snipping so that you have plenty of time to make sure it's the cut you'd like. The texture of your hair is taken into account so that you don't end up with a cut that only looks amazing when your hair's straightened.... but you have naturally curly hair. If you're trying to avoid silent (possibly angry?) hairdressers, you're safe at Defining Styles.

The atmosphere is pleasant. They offer you a beverage when you come in. I didn't have to wait more than a few minutes (and I was early). I had a cut/wash/style with Sana and she was awesome. She was personable and professional and I love how she did my hair. I went off her suggestions because honestly, it was just a super grown-out mess almost down to my tail bone. Being 9-months pregnant and having not had a cut in a good year, she was able to give me something that was light and low-maintenance without being a "mom cut". My hair feels SO nice. Afterward I went in for the "signature facial" with Leslie because again... 9 months pregnant and I wanted to treat myself before this little one makes her way out. She went above and beyond to accomodate me and make sure that I was comfortable given my state. The facial was seriously probably one of the best I've ever had and included a really nice neck/shoulder massage and arms/hands. I felt awesome when I left. The prices here are higher than your typical strip-mall chain, but you absolutely get what you pay for. I will definitely be back.

I was told they don't allow children there and it's dangerous for them, and that they'll make an exception for today. I was embarsssed bc that was clearly a lie as my child has gotten her haircut there before...I told them no thank you, i don't want to be cut by them and left. i am a single mom and had no choice but to bring my child. I was treated horribly and shamed for being a mother of a young child. i will be posting on every parent group in the farmington valley...your clientele is mostly mothers..how dare you treat someone like that.

I came here to Scott and Akis years ago, what seems like many moons ago when I was a young adult…read more I always loved the welcoming vibes from this warm, quaint salon and how sweet both Scott and Akis were. I respect Scott and his honesty, wanting my hair to be healthy- when I was young and I wanted to highlight or color it, I remember him vividly saying no because I had beautiful hair and then finally reluctantly agreeing to it. I went to Akis for many years before he moved on and he was a kind soul who I thought of fondly, almost as a friend- I trusted him to chop off 10 inches of my hair and I was one of his first hair color clients. I drove to The Asylum for years from NJ! It was a four hour drive in the car each way but I truly trusted Akis and it took me many years to find someone else who I like as much as him... I just wish I lived closer and could visit Scott now that Akis moved on. He really wants your hair to be healthy and for you to look good and not spend a fortune. The Asylum is a sacred, special place and I miss Scott and Akis very very much!
