Great doctor! I had a few things when looking for an eye doctor. First, he needed experience with astigmatism. Dr. Cheng keeps up to date with the latest and greatest in contact lens technology. He was able to finally (after other eye doctors had failed) find me the right contact lens. He does a through inspection and will be able to give you a lot of eye knowledge if you're into that stuff. Next, I needed a doctor that worked on saturday. When I first made an appointment he actually had to cancel because he was busy on that saturday. A couple saturdays later he added a spot for me. I'm glad I took the appointment. Since I have a busy schedule, he suggested we keep in contact through email. This worked out quite well. He even sent me my prescription through it. I've had a great experience and I look forward to coming back next year. ;-) read more

My name is Vicki and I dread annual check-ups - physical, dental, and vision all equally the same. I like to think that I have a superwoman complex, where like wine, I just get better with age. Unfortunately, time laughs at my complex. About a year and a half had passed since my last vision exam and I was well overdue for a new prescription for contact lens (dang one year prescription limits!) I decided to make use of my insurance and perused through the VSP directory for a local optometrist. I only had three requirements that I sought for: (1) distance (2) parking (3) positive feedback from folks who are a little far off from perfect vision acuity. After some good 'ol sleuth work utilizing Google and Google Maps, I decided that Dr. Cheng from Blackstone Optometry would be an ideal candidate as my local optometrist. From the initial phone call to set up my appointment to the end of my visit, I felt nothing but professionalism in the friendliest form from the entire staff. Stephanie and Mary made it easy to check in by emailing me the new patient form so that I could fill out the form in advance and at my convenience. Dan was super sweet and impressionable, explaining every pre-exam process so that I would feel comfortable and be at ease. After a short wait, Dr. Cheng greeted me and led me to the exam room. I appreciated his input and how he provided me with multiple options for contact lens, ensuring that his input was purely informational and not bias. As I was signing some final documents at the end of my visit, Dan came out and thanked me for my patience and apologized that I had to wait a bit past my appointment. I guess one of the staff members noticed that I went back outside to feed the parking meter, so they offered me a gift card as a token of their appreciation. It was definitely not necessary, but I appreciate the attention to detail and effort to cater to their clients. I think I'm in love! All staff members here are amazing; friendly and personable, and they really value their patients. Dan was awesome in getting me started with all the eye exams prior to seeing the doctor. (He is also the brother of Randall of Fresh Off the Boat which was super cool!). He is attentive and explains every test thoroughly. I was feeling really comfortable getting my eyes assessed :) Dr. Cheng was just as thorough and knowledgeable. He explained all of my test results, and for the first time at an optometrist, I knew exactly what my eyes needed and what was going on. Dr. Cheng gave me several different options and was understanding to whichever fits my current needs. I never had such a thorough exam throughout my 20 years of visiting optometrists. I am feeling more optimistic about my options and needs for my vision; prior to coming here, I've had my exams at Costco and did not get much information out of my visits and was limited to only the one option they gave me. I found out today that there were several different options that suited my desire to wear glasses and contacts simultaneously with strong astigmatism. The price I paid for out of pocket for an exam was around $120. It's much more expensive than Costco, but was so worth it. All of their tools and gadgets were up-to-date with 21st century technology which made the exams so much more efficient and comfortable for the eyes. I also paid an additional $40 for the Optomap Retinal Images. I am very glad that I did because we discovered that there may be a possibility for future glaucoma (something about the cupping of my optic nerves being much larger than usual). Never in my 20 years of visiting optometrists was I aware of this. I am so glad the tests at Blackheart are thorough because now I can take better care of my vision long term. I am so impressed with Blackheart that I scheduled another exam this week for contact lenses. I returned all my contacts back to Costco and going to start fresh here. :) read more

I have been for a reasonable eye doctor since I haven't wore my glasses from my high school years. Blackstone provides professional staff that will help you thru your eye exam. I just got my eyes examined here this morning and I have zero complaints. I was the first appointment of the day so there was no wait at all. I was greeted by Sandra who ended up doing my first few exams with some crazy machines. She offered to do a last exam for eye potential and to see any issues that may arrise in the future for an extra $39, however when I asked if it was absolutely necessary she said no and in return I declined the service. I suppose it's a good thing for people who have a long lineage of family with major eye issues. After that I was brought into Dr. Fukunaga' office (mind you it's two feet away, the office itself is QUITE small, but definitely not an issue, just something I of course noticed). I absolute LOVED Dr. Fukunaga. She is VERY friendly and actually wants to get to know you. As a first time patient I had to fill out a form when I arrived and one of the questions was "hobbies" - I figured "What doctor in LA actually cares about your hobbies, they just want you in, out, and payment please!" Dr. Fukunaga actualy made small talk with me about what I wrote on my forms while doing my exam to take my mind off of everything (I'm very skiddish when it comes to anyone going near my eyes, natural reflex I suppose). Anyway- she detected a very slight astigmatism in my right eye, which no other doctor has noticed, but I knew was there just from my own personal issues with vision. She prescribed me the perfect RX for reading glasses. Once I pick the glasses up and give them a ride I'll be sure to update my review- as I am sure that the new glasses will exponentially improve my day to day tasks at work - sitting in front of a computer looking at small details. OH, also, Chris at the front desk is VERY helpful and friendly. He did a great job of fidning me the perfect pair of glasses and didn't immediately jump to the Gucci glasses (as they're clearly the most expensive) he really wanted me to walk out with something that I love, not something that would earn them more $$$. My husband and I were recommended to this place by a friend of ours and we are really happy with the recommendation. The service was great and Dr. Sheng took the time to explain what everything meant on my result sheet and what we needed to pay attention to. My plan pretty much covers a new pair of glasses but they didn't push me hard to get one there after. I thought that was nice without the pressure. In the beginning they did advise me to take the exam not covered by the insurance. My husband told me to do that since with this thing, they would be able to check the health of eyes more thoroughly, and this is very important. My husband hadn't had an eye exam for years and last year his retina was partially detached and he ended us losing part of his vision after an emergency surgery (and he is not even 30). So it's necessary to check everything to make sure that your eyes are in good condition. The otherwise is always likely to cost A LOT more. read more

I haven't bought frames here but I have been for a few eye exams with Dr Cheng and I would highly recommend him to anyone - especially if you have a million questions about anything, like me (ignoramus who is paranoid about all kinds of eye-related stuff ) Dr Cheng is great because he is very patient and thorough, knows his stuff, has a fully-equipped practice with all the fancy machines AND internet access (how many doctors will EMAIL you your retina exam report?) This sort of thing impresses me. I feel like I am getting top of the line service. The downside is that he is also extremely thorough with ALL his clients (not just me) which means that his appointments will often go overtime and I end up having to wait for at least half an hour to 45 minutes to see him regardless of whatever time my appointment is set for. The man is busy busy busy. I don't mind waiting, but just so you know.... Give yourself plenty of time.... read more

Dr. Simon is the best! I went here after throwing out tons of contacts lenses due to dry irritated eyes. The office is small but they make great use of the space and have a really pleasant staff working together. It was the best experience. The doctor asked me lots of questions and explained everything to me. He gave me a few different lenses to try out for comfort and I ended up switching to daily disposable contacts. My eyes feel normal again and I'm so grateful I found the office via yelp just after my vision insurance kicked in. I only wish I had found this place a few months earlier when I purchased glasses because I really like their selection. Overall great great great! :) read more

I was referred to Blackstone Optometry by a friend and have been coming for over 2 years now and am very pleased with the great service and customer care. Everyone in the office is friendly and knowledgeable, which makes coming to eye checkups a pleasant experience. One thing I especially love about Blackstone is that they offer a greater variety of contact lens brands and Dr. Cheng offers the opportunity to test them out and find one that is the best suited for you. I had been using Acuvue Oasys for a long time because many Optometrists only carry few brands but I learned upon coming to Blackstone that there was better and newer brands out there that were readily available at the office for me to test. Some of the newer brands last longer and are healthier for the eyes than the Acuvue Oasys brand I had been using. The only issue I had with Blackstone is the location and parking, unfortunately they don't have a lot so there's only street parking available. I understand it is a small office and I am very happy with the service but I think something must be done about the parking situation since parking enforcement here is strict and unforgiving. I really would like to point out as a WARNING that parking here is not fun and they don't offer any parking other than meter parking on the street. Overall, Blackstone Optometry provides excellent care, state of the art technology, great variety in contact lens products, and very efficient and easy process of the regular optical check-up experience. read more

My whole family has been going to the same opthamologist since I was a kid. They stopped accepting my insurance so I turned to yelp and found Blackstone. My experience was incredible! Using two different systems to cross check my prescription, Dr Cheng informed me that my old lenses were almost 2X stronger than necessary, contributing to eye fatigue and headaches. He then introduced me to a new kind of solution that has extended the life of my lenses five-fold. I consider this a life changing find. I never thought I would be one to write a review of my optometrist and his crew, but it's not often you find a great place like Blackstone Optometry. I went in for my annual eye exam today and the place is cozy, charming, and in my hood. Support Local! Dr Cheng and his staff were on it. Super friendly from the minute you walk in until the minute you leave. The staff's great calming and relaxing energy make it a great experience. Dr Cheng took the time to explain everything to me and answer all my questions and was really helpful in understanding my specific eye needs and got some great education about my vision questions and needs. He is very knowledgable and genuine. His staff are rockstars in my book and they even called me after I had left to tell me they looked into my vision benefits (which honestly kinda suck and don't even know what I get-ususally it hasn't been much in the past) and they found that I actually got some more money off my lenses and they would refund me when I pick up my glasses! I really appreciate that they took the effort to look into my benefits after the fact and found out that I was eligible for some savings! Parking can be tricky, but hey-it's LA and it's Los Feliz-the parking situation is to be expected. The place seemed to have a decent selection of cool frames. However, since I was keeping my old ones I couldn't say alot. All i can say is that all the frames seemed to be the "cool" section of frames you see at your mall Lenscrafters, minus the weird outdated ones you usually see at chain glasses places. I saw everything from Gucci, Tumi, Kate Spade, Penguin, and these are just a few that I can remember. Love this place and definitely plan to make this my new optometry home. Had my peepers thoroughly examined here and I won't be going anywhere else from here on in. Au revoir, Dr. Briscoe. Dr. Fukunaga and her staff hit just the right note. They explained every procedure, every test result thoroughly, personably and reassuringly. More to the point, they asked me questions, many of them, and they listened. When the doctor went over the staff's findings (all great, thank goodness), she pointed out several issues with my vision, saying, "But of course, you probably know this from your other doctor's mentioning it." In fact, NO I didn't because my other doctor never mentioned ANY of it in the four years I wasted going to that sad, slow train wreck of an office. I'll be back next year. I decided to go see Dr. Cheng after reading reviews on Yelp and because he is so close to where I live. Everyone who worked there was super friendly and helpful from the time I made my fist appointment through ordering and picking up my contacts. The office is very small- a converted house- but was clean and cute inside. The pre-exam is in the hallway/ vestibule area which isn't super private, but is not uncommon in my experience for an eye doctor's office. The tech (sorry, can't remember his name) explained every test he was running and explained very thoroughly a newer test that isn't covered by insurance without being pushy about whether or not I needed to do it. I went ahead and did it. My visit was for new contact lenses (I have never worn them before) and since I have a bit of a thing against touching my eyeballs, I was nervous. But Dr. Cheng and his staff really worked with me and gave me "training" for putting them in and taking them out before I left. Now I am much better at it and really recommend this office for anyone who has been avoiding the eye doctor for too long like I had! read more

Okay, I know my optometry. When I was a kid, I had eye surgery to repair a detached retina. I have been in and out of eye doctor's office almost my entire life. And this is the best place, BY A MILE, I have ever been. Cool, neat little store front. Friendly staff. Incredibly intelligent, thorough and detail orientated doctor. My experience could not have been more pleasant. The images from my retina were a sight to see, and something I never got to experience in all the years of poking and prodding from other doctors. This place is great! I have good vision but I made an appointment to get a custom prescription for a new pair of shades. Service was amazing and the staff was very engaging, informative, and passionate about their profession and their patients. By the time it was over I definitely learned a thing or two about eyes. The office is very chic to which just added to the already pleasant experience. I was in and out in about a half hour. Definitely going to continue to come here for my annual eye exam no matter where I'm living in LA. Now tomorrow I get to take that excellent prescription and go pick up my Bernado's in Beverly Hills... score. Parking is simple, just go down one of the side streets and you should find a place in no time, besides, the surrounding neighborhood is gorgeous. First visit and so far I'm sold. Very friendly and competent staff and extremely knowledgeable and forthcoming Dr. Simon Cheng. I was seen promptly and dealt with professionally. Nobody tried to sell me on anything--which, ironically, makes me more rather than less inclined to use their services for lenses/frames/contacts. Their rates for contact lenses are competitive with online services and Costco. They even determined that my high prescription makes contacts "medically necessary," according to my insurance, which means I pay almost nothing for them. Dr. Cheng was sensitive to my particular requirements due to my age and prescription, and presented me with my various options, including the variety of contact lenses available to me as well as my options going forward for things like reading glasses and multifocal lenses, etc. Decent frame selection includes Varvatos, Penguin, Lacoste, and a few other brands, mostly on the pricey side. The space is rather small, but they navigate it (and you) expertly. I haven't ordered my lenses or contacts from them yet (waiting to pick a frame): I have a very high prescription that has proved challenging to fill perfectly in the past. I recently moved to San Clemente and seriously considered driving up to L.A. during the work week just to go back to Blackstone Optometry - simply because they've taken such great care of me over the years. The doctors and staff almost feel like family - and have always given me the best information I need to make informed decisions when it comes to my eye care, my contact lenses, and my glasses. I've been coming here a couple years now, and I love everything about this place. Staff, selection, service. Staff has always been helpful in telling me what my insurance covers and doesn't cover. I have a really high prescription, so this is important. I also lost my contact lens virginity from this place, and it's been a decent experience so far. I still prefer glasses to contacts, but the contact lens advice I've received have been helpful. Staff is very friendly in readjusting your frames for free every time they get messed up. Like that time I came in to get my frames adjusted after I got kicked in the face followed by getting elbowed in the face a week later. read more

When I think of all the years I squandered on Lenscrafters I just want to shudder. Love this place. They don't have thousands of frames but the ones they have are really chic, fashion forward, hipster fabulous, whatever you want. Their diagnostic technologies are state of the art, fast and painless. Yes the advanced retinal photography is $39 extra but so what? It does not simply diagnose cataracts or glaucoma but can show early signs of all kind of diseases, including diabetes. It costs extra because the upkeep of the machine and image storage is a subscription service they have to pay for. Dr. Fukunaga is super smart and personable, and spends as much time with you as you want. She was even able to give me the very fancy new (but scary to me) filament glaucoma test--I've never had one before. And we talked about eyes and vision and 3D movie technology. I can see again! I had been suffering for 3 days before I finally sought a professional for my vision impairment. Blackstone saw me immediately and discovered that rust had lodged itself into top of my eyeball. The doctor numbed my eye, and drilled an indention to break through my eye skin and scoop out the rust. I was terrified, but it was completely painless! I was shocked at the low price for such a serious procedure. I will definitely be back if any other incidents occur. Man, do I feel better. read more

These guys are so helpful and nice and everything you want in a doctor. I went in a few weeks back for my annual eye exam and Dr. Fukunaga was beyond helpful. She not only prescribed me some much needed drops, but also gave me suggestions for organic steps I could take to alleviate the issue which I absolutely love! Beyond that she gave me a handful of samples of Omega 3 fish oil which is much appreciated! The exam itself was great and I opted to do the optical nerve test which determines whether or not you are susceptible to any major diseases. Luckily my results came out A-OK and Dr. Fukunaga was exceptional in reviewing the test results and what everything meant. What really pushed this experience above and beyond was when she called me days after seeing her to make sure everything with my eye drops was going ok. To me, those little touches really make me feel the doctor truly gives a sh*t. I highly recommend this place to anyone that has the means :) read more
