My daughter had a flat and we needed a repair. Who knew this place was there?? I have driven by it probably thousands of times and even eaten right next door at J. Grays! It is withing a mile of my house. We went in on a Wednesday around noon. There were two guys working and both greeted us and one really jumped in to get moving with our needs. He took her bike, popped it up on the bike jack (not sure if that is an official term) and got to work. He gave us a few tips to continue to care for her bikeas well. We were in and out of the store withing 20 minutes and spent $21 on a tire repair. My daughter was thrilled to have her wheels back and I was thrilled it was quick and reasonable! I was recently in the market for a new headlight for my bicycle. Found a really cool company named Outbound Lighting. The closest dealer to me was Blackstone Bicycles in Cumberland RI. I called the owner who told me they had several in stock so I made the trip and purchased one. Upon arriving home I unboxed the light to start the charging process. I immediately noticed signs of wear on the body of the light. Long story short I was sold a demo light which had been used on their shop rides. The shop did eventually swap the light out for a NEW one but still just not the type of bike shop that I am interested in doing any further business with. read more

These guys RULE. First of all, they're hilarious and have excellent taste in music (when I saw the huge Jawbreaker sticker, I knew I was in the right place). They're honest and all prices are reasonable, and they're experts in their field. I've been twice to get my bike fixed, and they always do an amazing job while making me laugh the whole time. I wouldn't go anywhere else at this point, to be honest. I've had okay-to-negative experiences elsewhere, that's not the case here. I can't recommend Blackstone Bicycles enough! I am relatively new into cycling as it sucked me in as a conduit for convenience in running local errands expanding into a way to try to cram in as much exercise into my busy schedule as possible. It all started when I needed a bicycle for some new situations in my life where a car was not convenient so I decided to re-animate and tune my old bike(s) that my family used to use when I was a kid way back in the day that I still had lying around in the basement. Brandon did a wonderful job at a very fair price of getting my bike back on the road. However, I found that the bike wasn't great in wet roads or less than perfect road conditions and it was HEAVY. I remember as a kid how heavy and slow it was compared to all my friends and now I know why. So one thing led to another and as we know cycling is yet another sport rife with fancy, nice and expensive accessories and for someone who was out of it for so long I had no idea where to turn. I am glad that Brandon steered me right, he could have sold me so much crap that I didn't need and never known the difference but he gave me solid, cost saving advice. The only time he cost me money is when I (stupidly, my fault for not listening to him!) insisted he retune and re-activate the other two old bikes I had lying around. For that kind of money I could have bought a brand new bike almost and he even told me he would do it for sentimental reasons but that it was not an efficient use of funds. He was subtle and diplomatic, maybe too kind as some people take this personally. I wish I had listened. At any rate now I got some awesome bikes and in both cases I paid very fair prices. For example a lot of people look at the low prices of the big box stores particularly when their items are on sale. In those times yes you can save some money by going to REI. If you're so motivated I even recommend the experience and you will understand why big box stores are a waste of money. They sell you stuff on the cheap to start but nickel and dime you every time you have a problem or need help and never own the problems that occur after the fact. The truth is that Brandon's prices are already very attractive, in both cases about 20% or more under list from what I saw on the website. The time for killer deals is late winter where you can find some of the last year's latest and greatest bikes, stuff that would sell for top dollar, still brand new at 2nd hand prices. And the beauty is that if you buy from him he will help you out if you have problems down the line. For example to install a rear view mirror I needed a powerful air compressor and some tools that I just don't own and he didn't charge me for it. as various issues cropped up that he took care of for free. As long as you're not asking him to get you new stuff he will work around to help anything you bough from him work for you. After my experience I really would try to dissuade anyone from going either big box store or online just because of the chance of issues Brandon takes care of the customer. What I also like about Brandon and his shop is the culture. Obviously it's a nice clientele but it's not just a job for him as he lives the lifestyle. He gets to know the customer and taylors recommendations on what you really need and can afford. For the most part this shop specializes more in hybrid and mountain bikes because this is what cycling in Northern Rhode Island demands. The proximity to a lot of parks, trails, forests and the bike path as well as highly inclement road conditions half the year with sand from late fall to well into Spring on the roads makes road biking less practical around here and is the reason why I was glad to switch away from my old road bikes. I even ended up buying a nicer gravel racer with the mid sized tires that he told me I could inexpensively convert to a high speed road bike just by getting another set of wheels and tires but I am afraid of speed and he knows it, I was looking for an occasional commuter with more efficiency, and above all safety. That's how you have to roll in this area and being a cautious rider fearful of high speed but looking to make trips more than a couple miles long with lots of elevation change easier he steered me well. Now that I've tried hybrid bikes on RI roads in the winter and don't care for the speed that a true road or race bike can reach I am very happy and won't be going back, no more hair raising skids on sand, ice or road debris! I love Blackstone bicycles. I have been a satisfied customer for over a year and have bought more than a few items here and more importantly was talked out of buying many more pricey ones. I have been 100% satisfied with the quality of what I purchased, the honesty and appropriates of the recommendations, the treatment, the extra mile Brandon "pedals" to take care of his customers over the long term. I think this shop is an asset to this community and would recommend anyone new or experienced in the sport to buy here. read more

Went their to buy a bottom bracket . Owner took the trouble to match mine up. Didn't know I would need a tool to tighten the bearings on the bb. Owner let me take the tool home , use it and trusted me to bring it back . That usually doesn't happen. Usually I pay to have something removed or put on when I don't have the proper tool . I spent a day calling around to all of the different bicycle shops. We were visiting from out of town and wanted to rent bikes by the hour with our family of 4. This place was very accommodating and quick to get us on our bikes and out on the trail which was under a mile away. We had two teenagers so we didn't mind having to travel on the road for a short distance to get to the bike trail. Recommend:) read more

I thought I'd give these guys a try because when possible I prefer to do business locally. This is the first time I'd stopped in here but I did give their store a look see when they opened on front street originally. It was clear to me then and it still the case that they're not a "roadie " store but more for mountain and hybrid. Bike path sort of riding. Regardless I wanted to give them a chance to fix my bike which needed a drive train tune up. I went on a Thursday just after they opened at noon. No one there except some other guy loudly doing contracting business on the phone. The owner greeted me then immediately interrupted himself to take a call and talk to another client who hadn't taken the time to drive over as I did. After the call he expressed his anger that perhaps " I'm not allowed to take s sh"t, because the person on the phone says he was hard to get a hold of. Nice attitude. Rather than listen to me tell him what i wanted. ( I've been cycling god 40 years) he began to mess with my bike, tell me what I should do but not quote price and turn around time. Finally I squeezed a word in and asked how quickly he could tune it up. When he said 1.5 to 2 weeks I tried to explain I'd bring the bike back later in the season then because I don't like being without this time of year. This pissed him off. " nobody can do it that quickly. everyone is too busy." Just a grouchy guy. So to sum up. Short tempered guy. No road bikes , all parts would need to be ordered. Another business being run out of his. I went back to my long time LBS in PVD and got 1 week turn around but instead chose to trade in and I now ride a new bike I could have bought in town. Went in here this weekend to get something simple taken care of quickly. Owner was in the shop alone with a few customers waiting. He got through their issues expediently and fixed up my bike in no time. He was friendly and talked to me the few minutes it took to do the repair. Also, I dig the awesome ska band posters in the shop area. Ska fans are few and far between these days. Now that I know this place is here, I will definitely be back. read more

Recently got back into mountain biking and Blackstone Bicycles and Brendon (owner) have been awesome resources. From the rides he leads on Wednesday nights at Lincoln Woods to advice on bike set-up and quick turn-around on services (depending on how busy he is). The shop is rider owned and is invested in the local mountain biking community. Although 'bents are obviously not something they do regularly, Brendan has always been pleasant and professional and has done a good job fixing what needed to be fixed. Most recently, during what is obviously a busy season, he was able to replace a broken shifter within a week and then had the patience to adjust things to my liking. This morning I went to Blackstone Bicycles to see if they could repair my SRAM X0 derailleur that I broke on the trails. I originally tried to mend it myself but made it worse by stripping the screw. Luckily for me, they were able to fix the derailleur while I waited. They even installed a new hanger (that I supplied), tightened the chain, oiled/cleaned it, and tuned up some small bits. It took under 30 minutes (this guy is fast!) and the bike is shifting like new. I couldn't be more pleased. The price was $25 which I thought was more than fair. read more

Mike and Bredan have an absolute gem here! These guys are extremely focused on providing excellent customer service as well as promotong the sport in our area. I recently made some major upgrades to one of my mountain bikes, this was the first time i ever visited their shop, Mike was extremely professional and friendly with all of my questions and requests. They had my parts in two days and had my bike all put back together the same day they received the parts i had ordered. As a new Providence resident i am ecstatic to have found this shop and as long as i live here, Blackstone is where i will buy/fix my and my family's bikes or anything bike related. read more

I'm really surprised by the other rater's experience, as I've found the staff at Blackstone to be incredibly knowledgeable, helpful, and professional. I also find it staggering that he's bashing the place after HE forgot his stuff on the counter. I suspect that the rack he was sold was, in fact, 'universal' (wouldn't it have said so on the box???) but he just couldn't figure it out. So my advice to everyone else would be to give Blackstone the chance to prove to you that they are so much better than this guy claims. read more

So I bought a rear bike cargo rack for $40 from these guys and the guy said that it was "Universal". After two hours trying to install it with no luck. I brought back the rack and they switched it out for a different make and model but I never saw a price sticker; I was just told it was and even transfer. I also bought some bike lube which I left at the counter due to my excitement to finally have this problem that had taken up my whole afternoon fixed. 15 minutes later as I arrived home I realized I had left my chain lube and immediatley called the store. At first the guy had no idea who I was even though I had been in the store twice in the last 3 hours and I said exactly what I had bought. He then told me that my Tri Flow was no where to be found in the store and that I must have taken it. Which I know fully did not happen. Feeling scetchy about the situation I decided to look up the rack they gave me as a replacement to find that in every marketplace it goes for at least $10 less than the original rack I purchased. So by the end of originally a $50 overall purchase. I ended up over paying by $20. Needless to say use one of Providence and RI's many other Bike Shops before even thinking of wasting your time and money with Blackstone Bicycles. read more
