I wanted to give this place a good review. I review almost every place I go because I rely on these reviews to decide if it's a place I want to spend money as well as let others know if they should. My first impression was it was a nice brewery with friendly staff. The guy pouring beers was good. I was however, disappointed because we were under the impression they had food. My sister checked website and food trucks were advertised. None. We asked and said we could order in but no recommendations and told to google. Ok..... thanks. We ordered some drinks and found a place to order food in so we did. We were then Told we exceeded out time limit and although we ordered food we could not eat in establishment. Why? Because Covid restrictions did not allow longer than 90 minutes due to CDC and air circulation. Wtf! DO NOT MAKE UP RULES!! If 90 minutes is a rule are you switching up staff every 90 minutes?This is not a rule! The place was about half full with at least 7-10 empty tables And nobody waiting. So basically we could not stay even though they had open space but if I walked to parking lot and made a new reservation we could then stay. I was too lazy and pissed to do that. We were told we could drink until food came but had to go after that. They apologized for it but I kindly paid, tipped and left. I totally get the rules of Covid and please don't insult me by saying it's an air circulation deal. People take flights longer than 90 minutes. People work in offices for longer than 90 minutes. People go to restaurants and eat for longer than 90 minutes. In a pandemic when establishments fight for customers and to stay open don't ask me to leave when I have an open credit card with money to spend and NO ONE waiting for a table. I explained as I paid that leaving was unnecessary due to the many open tables and lack of people waiting to be seated that this was a miss for them. We left and went .2 miles down the road and spent our money. Not cool Blackstack staff. Whoever owns this place should school the staff on implementing the rule when appropriate. We won't be back and won't recommend. There are a million craft breweries in Minneapolis and St. Paul and to have to beg to stay is not an attraction. **btw I frequent lots of places in MN due to my job and this is the first time I have ever been told to leave even though there was nobody waiting. I get it if people are clamoring to get In but that was absolutely not the case. I guess making money is not the priority here. Go to another brewery. This isn't special. Sorry. read more

Pretty cool spot to grab a beer. The space is very open and there's tons of seating. The decorations are simple, but create a good ambiance with huge plants and retro furniture. I went here on a Friday night and it was very busy, but the service was good and we still found a place to sit. I had a coffee ale that was awesome. Overall a chill place with good beer. read more

Well the beers were great. The atmosphere is uncomfortable for me. The chairs are very uncomfortable and the low table chairs are good for games but no high tables which makes it a more comfortable seating in a bar setting. The staff was very nice friendly. read more

Checked out Black Stack a week ago and I think they are still putting some finishing touches on the interior but they are on to a great start and a welcome addition to the St. Paul Brewing scene. We live in the neighborhood and love having this place down the street. The taproom is simple yet comfortable and has a wide open feel. Huge bar and lots of seating. More importantly the beer is well crafted and holds up well against any other brewery in MN . They have a parking lot but also have an underground lot with over 100 spaces so this will be a great place to hang in winter . They had 4 beers on tap , an IPA , Dark Lager, and two Belgian Ales. The ones we tried were well made and were excellent for a new brewery. The IPA in particular was better than some well established breweries in MN . Here are a few tips for the owners to make the taproom even better : - Food Trucks ! They had none when we were there and doesn't look like they have them yet .This is a definite must have for any taproom in the cities -Bike Racks - This is the Twin Cities after all and a lot of people bike and do bike tours of breweries. They are also conveniently located close to 6 other breweries . - Beer Signage- The taproom needs a price list and beer boards behind the bar. Makes choosing a beer a lot easier especially as you add more. -Crowler Fridge -Would be nice to offer take home options. Might even prefer this over growler station. - Paint the Stack -They have a huge smoke stack on site. I think as its part of your brand it needs to get a paint job . Will add to the taproom brand and will be easy to see for miles (this was also mentioned at a community info session a year or two back)! - Merchandise- Offer a merchandise rack with Shirts ! - Spruce up the interior - This building has huge walls and what a perfect canvas to have a MN artist make those walls POP . -Premier League /MLS Matches - As the brewery/taproom is less than 2 miles to the new MN United future stadium makes sense to start showing games on the weekends . A lot of fans for this growing sport. I know I'd appreciate it . Overall , highly recommend this brewery and their taproom. read more

We happened upon this location after a stop at another nearby brewery. We wondered about only 7 reviews (at the time) but it became obvious by the tons of people and a sign in the window of this warehouse type building that said "NOW OPEN"... still we ventured in. We were surprised also to find an underground parking. We ventured down into the garage. Signage to the actual brewery was non-existent and you kind of felt like you were going into some underground club. Only to find there was something down on that level but we had no idea what it was and there seemed to be a lot of people including children which further confused us. We finally found stairs to go up and found ourselves in the midst of a huge brewery/tap room. Two spare chairs and we scooted ourselves up to the bar. I ordered the Ratify. The spicy citrusy notes spoke my language. Good stuff and a nice refreshing wheat beer! They have four beers on tap but I only drank the one, so now we HAVE to go back. They have a huge open taproom with lots of tables. Games and tons of people enjoying each other's company over a brew. After seeing a STRIB article post-visit, we realized we got to meet one of the brewers. He was very friendly and offered a sample of a yet-to-be-released beer to my husband, which I in turn got to also take a sip. I see great things for this brewery's future. read more

Stumbled across this place while driving by and felt the need to check it out. Hadn't heard about them, but glad we stopped by. Four beers on tap with promise for more + canning. I attended Harry Potter trivia here in December. I was excited because this was my first time at BlackStack and I love checking out the Twin Cities breweries! I was disappointed to only find 4 beers on tap. I tried three of the four and wasn't really impressed with any of them- if I returned, I would order the white ale again. The space itself is really cool- it is quite large and the outer edge of the taproom is lined with vintage couches, tables and chairs. It was a cool way to lounge, enjoy a beer and play some trivia. Entering the taproom is a little odd when there's a food truck outside and the taproom is busy- two or three lines were colliding while I waited for my food outside. All in all, it was a great space for a large event but I can find better beer elsewhere in St. Paul. read more

My first time here and I must say what a place to be. The atmosphere is great here with all the activities going on. When you walk in to your left there is a coat rack and shelves of board games you can choose from to play with your buddies. To your right at the other end of the room there are beer pong tables set up as well as a big screen tv. There are several couches from which you can sit down and relax at with your tasty beverage. Today there was a good truck set up outside. The beers were all good, I got a flight to sample some of their offerings. All were good and very distinctive. The House Press was perhaps my favorite as it was citrusy and hoppy. The Spare Grounds was strong in coffee taste and was neat to try as it was a collaboration with the coffee business down the hall from them. Overall I will definitely be visiting this place again. But I will say parking was a pain in the rear end! read more

I tried a couple of beers here, and while decent, they weren't noteworthy either. BlackStack offers a small selection of standard beers that don't stand out in a booming microbrewery metropolis. The space is large and follows the same renovated warehouse decor/vibe that you can find all over the Twin Cities. It blends in with everything else around. Hopefully with a little more time, BlackStack will grow a larger beer menu of unique selections. Today though, as a former-native-turned-regular-visitor to the TC's, Blackstack doesn't make my list of have-to-go-to places when I'm in town. read more

Fun place to visit on a cold, gray day! We came with kids, ranging from 2-10 years old, with another couple we knew. The beer was very good. The NE IPA was excellent, and the stout was fairly good too. A bit sparse, but still a fun place. Interestingly, there was a man selling shucked oysters that we didn't patronize, but which added to the odd but interesting ambience. Bathrooms were a bit sketchy for young kids, but that's the only downside of the place. Overall, a fun spot to spend some time with friends. read more

I'll start with the positive. The plants, lighting, music, and board games all add a unique and eclectic vibe that cannot be found at any of the other local breweries. I enjoyed the sour beer and shared a flight with my partner. It's very clean; no sticky floors or tables or the smell of old beer. The staff make it even better. The casual conversation and knowledge of whats on tap is awesome. Now for the not so great. I couldn't enjoy the conversation with my partner because of the obnoxious guest chatting (loader than necessary) up his friends literally about how great he was. He was very familiar with the staff (perhaps he worked there or was an owner), maybe he's a regular but him alone was bad for business. Even on the weekend, there's an appropriate level of drunkenness and consideration for others wanting to enjoy their time in a nice space. Over priced. Great space, ok staff, ok beer, way overpriced. Had an 16oz New England IPA (tastes pretty standard) for $8. I can't get behind a brewery with price points like that. It was just a normal beer and after tip I could get more, less expensive, better beer at the state fair or a baseball game. :/ read more

I'm not really into the whole brewery scene as I don't love beer and all these different breweries start to feel the same. Blackstack offered some unique choices. Been eager for this place to open. The beer was very good. We had the IPA and it was very smooth, cold and had some bitter and some orange-y notes. The price was a bit steep (8 bucks for a pint). The ambiance was OK but I imagine will improve over time as they get more settled in. Hopefully they can drop that price slightly! read more

At 2pm, Black Stack got its final regulatory approval, by 4pm they were open for business, and by 7pm I was enjoying a nice IPA in a great space with the Johnsons and their friends. Congratulations! What a fabulous addition to the Twin Cities. Welcome!!! read more
