Awesome Gunsmith! I dropped off my Smith & Wesson Shield 9 mm, along with my TruGlo TFX Pro sights and an Apex Trigger kit to get these installed around 3:30 pm on Friday. I was told it would be ready in about a week. But I got a text message this morning around 9 am, yes the very next day! So less than 24 hours later my gun was ready! I don't want to write a review of this place and bring more attention to it, because it's such a gem, and I want to keep it to myself, but I should give them the credit they are due. I have not been able to find nearly an extensive used gun collection anywhere else in or around Austin, until I discovered this place! I love antique and used revolvers and I was pleasantly surprised to find that they had a fantastic collection. They have SO many used guns, so if you're in the market for one, of any variety, check them out. They offer trades and consignment for guns you wish to part with. Great service. I needed a pesky castle nut removed from a buffer tube that i couldn't budge. They don't accept credit cards, so I went to the ATM across the street. Took my Benelli Super Black Eagle to AJ due to my son abusing it. They looked it over and let me know the rust could be removed, but the barrel had swelled due to firing under water or with the barrel clogged. AJ referred me to a company in Houston who could cut the barrel and rethread it since he would just have to add a fee if he handled it. This was excellent customer service. I recently ordered a KE-Arms lower from Brownells and used Blackjack as my FFL as I have done with other firearms in the past. I always like to support local family owned businesses and have never had any issues until today. This time however they insisted I could not inspect the firearm until after the paperwork was done and background check passed. I should have seen a red flag right there but hey I figured everything had always gone well in the past. Sure enough when I went back to pick it up after the background check it was blemished. They insisted I had to deal with Brownells myself and give them the return label and packaging so they could ship it back. I called Brownells and they were very helpful offering to do all that and send a new one upon receipt but said that the FFL is there to handle all of this. I very reluctantly accepted the firearm instead of dealing with all the hassle but will never use this shop again. Too bad, they are local and up until now had been great. If something goes wrong however they are very irresponsible and hands off. read more

Discovered trolling the Internet for a good gunsmith. AJ did a SBS job on a Stoeger Coachgun for me that looks like it came that way from the factory. SBR + threading on a YHM .300 Blackout upper, plus fixed the trigger on my SKS, all for reasonable prices, and in only two weeks (quoted 5-6 weeks for the SBR). When I went to pick up, he installed the QD YHM flashhider while I waited. Professional, quality work. read more

Definitely one of the best places in Austin to get work done on firearms. AJ is honest and has integrity and the rest of the staff is great and very knowledgeable as well. I've taken a pistol in for sight alignment and replacement of the rear sight which they were happy to do at a discount since the replacement rear sight was the same brand and the front sight didn't need any work at all (switched from a 3 dot Ameriglo to an I-dot Ameriglo). They could have just charged me full price... I also took a rifle in to have AJ look at since I was considering cutting the barrel down (21.6" VEPR down to 16.5" ), re-threading and adding a different muzzle device. He said he could definitely do the work I was considering but recommended against it because he was worried about decreased reliability and function. I say again, discouraged me from spending money at his shop after acknowledging he could do the work for the sake of me, the customer and my rifle. That is HONEST service. I still might have him do it because I like tinkering (safely) with my weapons and I would trust the quality of his work. Project guns are fun. Bottom line is this is a great little gunsmithing/gun shop with a cool selection of firearms and a great staff of people. I highly recommend them. read more

I wanted to upgrade my sights on my Glock 41 Gen 4, and most shops were talking about dropping the weapon off for a week. I called Blackjack and they told me that they had the Tru-glo's in stock and that they could knock the job out in15 minutes. They told me to come on in. Sure enough AJ completed the upgrade while I waited. I am absolutely please by the sights and the quality of the install. My only complaint that brought Blackjack down to a 4* was their No Credit Card policy. I mean its 2016, get a credit card account and allow debit transactions. I would pay the 3% to not have to go to the ATM. And what the heck is a check. I use bill pay. haven't written a check in years. lol. I still recommend this shop as the best in town. read more

I took my M&P 15-22 and my Glock 20 here to see if they could fix why this guns would not shoot good consistently. The MP would shoot a few rounds and jam the glock would shoot a few rounds and then would stop resetting. Dropped them off he called me in less that a week, i picked them up, paid for the services provided, went to the range 2 days after that. They was doing the same thing they was before he "Fixed them" called him and he told me to bring them in, again, less than a week i went and picked them up, and i had to pay again, for what i dunno. I paid, i figured once i leave and they are working fine Im not coming back here. He told me it was the bullets i was using, ok, so i bought different brands. Tested them out and same results, what kills me is that i was charged a second time for something that wasn't fix the first time... the 22 still is not working. I fixed the Glock 20. I just replaced the whole trigger set up. read more

NEVER TOUCHING MY GUNS AGAIN. I took my 308 and my AR in for some fairly simple work. The .308 needed a threaded barrel for a muzzle brake, glass bedding the stock and he talked me into a larger bolt knob to boot. The AR need a new gas block and a handguard installed. Well, the .308 was done but not tightened down ( neither the brake or the bolt knob) and the glass bedded stock has married the action to the stock. No kidding...over a year later and I'm still unable to get the action and the stock apart. As for the AR? He DRILLED holes in the handguard. Instead of a simple phone call telling me there was a issue, he drilled extra holes in a $300 handguard to install a new gas block. Instead of a simple phone call! It's been over a year and I'm still infuriated. Blackjack in the LAST place I would ever recommend to anybody for anything. 'Nuff said. read more

I chose Blackjack Gunsmithing because of Yelp. I usually read several reviews before trying a new business especially restaurants. I could have gone to several other local gunsmiths but wanted to give them a try. I had an old 181 series Ruger Mini 14 that had never been fired. It was so gummed up from old oil that I could not even take it apart because I thought I would break something. They took it all apart and replaced a few springs, detailed cleaning and lubrication, and replaced the stock with a Tapco Intrafuse. Perfect job and service was quick.
