This is a great neighborhood spot. Delicious food. (Their pate and pizza with fig, prosciutto and arugula great choices.) The bread they served with the pate was wonderful: sour, chewy with a thick crust. It could be addictive. The dessert that caught our eye was a sour cherry pie, served with vanilla gelato. The crust was flaky and perfectly charred (just a smdge) by being cooked in their pizza oven. A wonderful meal on our first trip to Bozeman. Easily our favorite place to eat in Bozeman. Very popular, so try to book ahead but kudos to them for keeping the counter seating open for walk-ins. Friendly vibe, great staff. Really fresh produce beautifully prepared, particularly love the beet and farro salad and pastas. The wood fired oven produces beautiful bread and the best pizza in Bozeman. The menu changes daily but always interesting, they keep great staples on the menu. Knowledgeable staff, especially Nick, on the interesting wine list. Was visiting town and looking at the menu posted in the window when a passerby said "excellent food". They were right! The setting is cozy casual and inviting. Had olives, beet salad, and campenelle pasta. All were wonderful; the campenelle, in particular was to die for. Staff matched the food; attentive, pleasant, charming, and upbeat. I left a hat there and when I called later they even volunteered to return it via mail at no charge! Very impressed with this place. A must! read more

Great dining experience. Tables are a little bit snug, so just be aware of that. We got the olives and the blackbird bread, both were amazing. All the little details had been thought of, which made for a pleasant experience- the napkins, the checkbooks, the wine bar, the budino bowl, all so cute and hipster. I got the kale salad with fennel sausage on it for my entree and my man got the mostarda pizza. Both totally top knotch and PERFECT. Then we ended our dinner with the budino---DIVINE. The food is expensive, but the quality lives up to the cost! It was a great experience, and I will be back. The only thing I thought could have been better was the cost of the salad compared to its size. The salad was delicious. It was just about half the size I thought it would be based on its price. We ate at the Blackbird last night. I have heard really great things, but based on the meal, I will not be back and I will not recommend this restaurant to my friends. I had a kale salad and the polenta. The kale salad was great! The polenta was okay. My spouse had Pork with mashed celery and broccoli. The Pork loin was a pitiful cut. It had fat and grissel. The broccoli was over-spiced with vinegar and salt. The celery was okay but the sauce was overwhelming. My biggest disappointment is that gluten-free selections are limited. Many of the small plates are gluten-free and several of the meat plates are gluten-free. They do not offer gluten-free or wheat-free pasta or pizza. The toppings menu looked amazing. read more

I love the Blackbird Kitchen! I travel to Bozeman often for work and have been to several restaurants, but by far this is the best place I've eaten. The menu changes according to what's in season and available, so you know what you're eating is fresh. As others have noted the atmosphere is cozy and warm. The only thing more perfect would have been a comfy couch and a roaring fireplace on a cold, snowy night like tonight. Often times eating alone can be awkward, but the staff was more than welcoming and their suggestions terrific. My choices - the Kale Caesar Salad (one of the tonight's specials) and the Lasagne with Meat Ragu and Bechamel. I don't think you can go wrong as everything coming out of the kitchen looked sublime. Do yourself a favor and go to the Blackbird Kitchen. read more

This was my first visit to Bozeman. I was told in Tucson Arizona that this was a must try restaurant by a friend of the owners. To my pleasure it was fantastic! From the reviews i had read the bread with olive oil and balsamic starter was a must and omg....that was unlike any bread i have ever had! Now i was exteemely curious about the kale Cesar salad,the best combination I have ever tasted ....already im happy...now for the entrees, my son ordered the lamb shanks(cooked to perfection) his girlfriend ordered the special which was a fillet, again amazing, and I had the very unique pizza mostardo...a very unique combo of a fig sauce,prosciutto,panado, and toped with arugula...pure heaven! Nice wine list, and comfortable but very nice atmosphere. It was my favorite dining experience I had the whole week I was visiting...can't wait to come back and return. My wife and I came in at about 7pm after being outside in the the -12° weather during the Christmas Stroll. It was packed, but thankfully we had reservations. On cold nights like this, it would be great if they had a double door. We both had one of their creative pasta dishes: Pappardelle (lamb sugo, fennel pollen, and pecorino); Stella blue squash agnolotti (brown butter, wild mushroom, hazlenuts, and balsamic). They were both excellent, but the hazelnuts in the agnolotti were just outstanding. They have a reasonable beer and wine list, but nothing on draft. I had the always wonderful Red Lodge Bent Nail IPA. For dessert, we shared a chocolate concoction that comes with olive oil drizzled on the top - OMG - too wonderful for words! You can also sit at the bar area next to the pizza oven for a real intimate dinner and get the fun of watching them prepare the meals. read more

Best food in Bozeman. They use as many local products as possible. Kale caeser salad is awesome. Daily soups rock. If you like a more authentic Italian style pizza, you will love theirs. Tried to eat here this Friday night, no reservation but 75% of the tables were empty so we thought we would give it a try. We were rudely told there was nothing available but we could sit at the cramped bar. Went to sit down and were told somebody else would be taking the end seats. At that point we decided we didn't want to squeeze in to the middle of the bar and sit on strangers laps, so we decided not to stay. The hostess at that point made a face and turned walked away. Fortunately we walked across the street to Copper, which was much busier, and we were promptly seated by a very friendly hostess. My favorite place in town. Excellent food, simple and made with good ingredients. The staff are knowledgable and amiable. Nice ambiance, if a bit crowded. All that stuff. But the bread. THE BREAD. This stuff is extremely pricey, but the best I've ever had. It's made by one of the owners, from flour imported from Italy. I have, to be completely honest, bought a loaf, taken it home, and ate the entire thing toasted with butter and maybe cheese melted on top. One of the best restaurants in Bozeman. We eat here at least twice a month and are rarely disappointed. The hipster vibe seems to have dissipated over the past few years and the restaurant appears to be a little more approachable. In its infancy I could barely stand the hipster, "I'm too good to wait tables" attitude they projected but this seems to have lessened recentally. Make reservations as they are always busy. Blackbird Kitchen is as good as it gets in Bozeman. And if it were in New York, Los Angeles, Houston, or any other great restaurant city in the U.S., it would rank at the very top, also. Creative cuisine, a thoughtful wine list, a staff that is passionate about food, an open kitchen with endless action, and an interesting clientele of all ages gives Blackbird Kitchen a happy energy. We've been back several times, and sampled broadly, and still been unable to find a single dish that wasn't magnificent. Blackbird is in an older downtown Bozeman building, which adds to its charm. There is a bit of a downside: its ceiling is high with mechanical work exposed. This gives it a lively acoustic, notwithstanding the discreetly hung dampening panels. So, one must take the bitter with the sweet, and tolerate the extra decibels as part of the dynamic feeling. A tradeoff well worth making... Bravo, Blackbird Kitchen. read more

Some of the best pizza I've had! We went on a Tuesday night, and it was very busy. We were lucky to find bar seating right next to the kitchen, where we could watch the chefs furiously preparing the food. The decor is very nice and the service was excellent. In addition to pizza, Blackbird serves what looked like fabulous Italian dishes. However, I recommend you try the pizza, especially the white pizza and the mushroom pizza. Delicious! read more
