A true Valpo staple. Has always had the most cozy atmosphere and sweet staff. Outdoor seating in the summer is always the best. Simple menu but still has plenty of favorites for everybody who may stop in. If I could give this place 10 stars I would! It's the perfect spot downtown to get amazing coffee and food. The people here are just as amazing as well. What makes it so good is that it's legit "you're going to wake up and take on the world" coffee. In other words... it's strong! And my favorite food item, which a ton of people order, is the Nova Lox and Bagel. It is so fresh and delicious. By far, the best lox and bagel in all of NWI. I've been eating scones from Blackbird Cafe for years. After branching out to the breakfast sandwiches I realized I hadn't written a review. The cinnamon scone is delicious! The dough is consistently cooked through and tender. A generous portion of a cinnamon mixture covers the entire middle layer of the scone. I also ordered the egg and meat croissant breakfast sandwich with provolone. The egg was tender and the sausage was flavorful. I appreciate that the croissant was warmed too. This is a great cafe that has been around for years. If they don't have the cinnamon scone, I usually enjoy another flavor, yet long for the cinnamon to appear on the menu. read more

We just moved here from Texas and were so excited to find a cute coffee shop. Unfortunately the staff is extremely immature and unprofessional. My wife's chair slipped up from under her while dining in and upon the incident, nostaff came to check on her instead they all went into the back and were loudly giggling while I pick her up off the floor, one staff came out and without a word removed the chair and went back into the back where more giggling was heard throughout the restaurant. My wife left embarrassed and when I went up to the counter to politely ask for the managers contact info so I could reach out directly The "barista" went into the back and came out and said "the manager is busy right now and I can't give out their contact info" . So instead of handling this privately over email, I thought I'd make sure everyone is aware who the kind of staff they are tipping. We will not be coming back , there are other coffee shops on the square I'm sure treat their customers better. My friends and I each got a breakfast item to satisfy our hungry tummy. I opted for the breakfast egg sandwich that was actually a wrap with 2 scrambled eggs and an additional sausage. It was simple and warm. For a small cafe, Blackbird makes a geniune effort to customize their items to its customers' liking, which I greatly appreciate. The cafe also offers more exciting options and drinks like the apple pie chai latte, which my friend got. Everything about the place was cute. People in Chicago are spoiled. There are too many beautiful coffee shops and fantastic restaurants throughout the city, and they have to be decent to stay in business. Knowing I am not coming back to Blackbird, so I will just be honest. Music selection was the best part. The turkey avocado panini was just okay though there were only three thinly sliced avocado. The side salad that came with had sands in it. I put it down after two bites. For $10, I would expect more than that. read more

Lots of drinks to choose from here, although I'm an Earl Grey drinker so I don't stray fine that. I'm thrilled they actually have it in fact. The prices are cheaper than Starbucks too. I kind of don't want to tell about the restaurant setup because I want to keep it to myself it's so good. But in the name of Yelp... there are lots of tables for this small cafe. They have a small bar that runs up along the front window which I love to sit at while doing work. Once warm, they have an outside are to sit in which is perfect to work from too. I used to frequent this spot when it was Annalisa's coffee shop back in the day, so when a local recommended that Blackbird Cafe was a great spot for brunch I was eager to check it out! I'd return in a heartbeat for a cup of coffee, baked good or sandwich! Upon entering I wasn't sure if they'd have "real food" beyond baked goods -- but somehow in their tiny kitchen they make really good "real food"! Here's what I loved about it: -Plenty of seating, and various types of tables to enjoy some time alone, catch up with a friend, or dine/drink w/a small group. -The staff were very friendly and efficient! -The food was delicious! My friend and I each ordered two different sandwiches (fantastic breakfast sandwich and the green eggs and ham breakfast sandwich) and when they arrived we decided to share and after licking our plates clean we couldn't decide which we liked better. Next time I return I'll order an espresso beverage (I opted for coffee this time because of the length of the line - and it was excellent!) and leave with a baked good because the homemade selection of pies, scones, quiches, muffins, cake and cookies looked phenomenal! read more

Very cute and cozy little coffee shop in downtown Valpo. I stopped in one morning and grabbed an ice coffee and to my surprise a gluten free carrot bread. My iced coffee was excellent, great flavor and the perfect amount of ice. So surely I won't have to sue over too much ice (kidding!!!). The gf carrot bread was just ok. Nothing special and not something I'd get again. It was dense and very dry, so either one of two things happened. Either it was a day or so old and just a bit stale. Or the baker is not really an gf baker and just decided that any old gf flour blend would suffice. Unfortunately, not all flour blends are equal and it takes a lot of experimentation to find the right one for each type of baked good you make. That being said it wasn't the worst ever and I certainly appreciate the effort and the ability to accommodate is annoying gf people! read more

Yesss! We were looking for some espresso at 6PM, and this was the only place we could find that was open. I'm so glad! The girl at the counter was super helpful, and another girl made the drinks. They have a solid drink menu, and I was really impressed by all the different offerings. I got an iced red eye with caramel and whipped cream, and it was fantastic. The coffee was so freakin good! My friend got some monkey drink(peanut butter, banana, and flax) and let me try it. I would definitely order it another day. It was perfect..not too sweet, balanced flavors, and just a little bit of texture. Mmmmmm. And to top it off.... the prices were drastically lower than Starbucks. I would give this café 10 stars if I could because it's so hip and trendy, but without being pretentious. If you don't know what a red eye, or something else, is you can ask questions, and they aren't going to make you feel lame for asking. Every drink is great there, but I'm especially partial to the apple chai. Whether you get it hot or cold, it's just so good. Like drinking autumn in a cup!! I love to order a sandwich and salad, and unwind in the café for a bit with my drink. The roasted veggie sandwich is so very good, and as an omnivore that's saying a lot. I really love the location. The space that Blackbird occupies is located in the heart of downtown Valparaiso, and downtown Valparaiso is top notch for great dining, bars, cafés, and shopping. I love the feeling of sitting in this cafe. It's super calm and has open spacing. It does take a bit for any food you order (10-20 minutes) BUT it is made specifically for you. My favorite item on their menu is the Turkey Avocado Panini. It's extremely well done with gooey cheese, toasted bread, and chips on the side. I recommend coming at odd times if you want to try their food. They attract a large crowd around midday and it can boost the wait to around an hour on food. read more

Definitely one of my new favorite places to hit up whenever I go to Valpo! The staff is very friendly and they come get your order right away. I have ordered the London fog with vanilla syrup and the yogurt and granola bowl with strawberries and it was very refreshing! The baked goods in the window are also AMAZING! I had the peanut butter pie, and I was instantly in love with just the first bite! My husband and I loved this place so much that when we had guests over from out of state, we knew just where to bring them! Beautiful location, right by the park in the heart of downtown!
