My wife and I spent several days in Valparaiso to both visit her sister and introduce me to the town where both of them went to college. I had always wanted to go there and I'm very happy to say that I totally enjoyed the visit. While there, we visited a lot of places and ate most of our meals out. This was one of the places we visited. We strolled around the square visiting all the venues that were open for business. Designer Desserts was a great place to pop in to. They have a huge selection of baked goodies and cupcakes of almost every flavor imaginable. I chose a peanut butter chocolate one. It was huge! I had to eat it with a fork. Even then, I made a total mess. Messy or not, it was really delicious. I usually don't go for chocolate cake, but this one was really good. I don't really remember what kind my wife got. She didn't eat hers in the store like I did. She waited until later when we were getting a fruit drink. The lady who was working behind the counter was very friendly and helpful. Came across this place by mistake. I ended up getting the pumpkin pecan crunch bar. I'm pretty sure it's seasonal, but it has me in a chokehold. It's super delicious. The first time I went we also got a brownie. They are SUPER rich so just keep that in mind. Still very yummy though. The employees are super helpful at answering question too. We got cupcakes here the other day. The vegan chocolate with vanilla frosting was very good. The vanilla cupcake with chocolate frosting and holiday sprinkles was a little dry and I found the sprinkles to be overwhelming. Was an absolutely horrific experience!! Completely unsanitary conditions, disrespectful behaviour, and despicable management. We used to go there for years and years. Recently the place is just gone downhill! The recent experience we had just left us no choice but to leave this review. While we were there, the young lady behind the counter (brunette, curly hair) was playing with a customer's dog while people were waiting to be served. She then went behind the counter without washing her hands and started grabbing cupcakes and loading them into boxes. Again, this is absolutely disgusting! When I came here turn to be served, I asked her if she could wash her hands. She looked me dead in the eye with the meanest look and said "why?!" I said " one, because I saw you just playing with an animal and handling food. The other is that you should always wash your hands regardless when handling food." She started to say something else, but I just asked her again to please wash her hands. She scuffed and rolled her eyes, but did finally wash her hands. I thought about immediately checking her for her behaviour, but I let that go. Once she finished boxing my order, she slammed the box down, give me the minister and said " what else do you need?" I said nothing else. She then push the box towards me and over her shoulder said, "have a nice day" sarcastically. Needless to say I was pretty perturbed by her behaviour as well as her cleanliness. Initially, we were going to let it go. However, my spouse and I talked and agreed that this particular issue need to be addressed. Therefore I called the restaurant and spoke to the manager. When I explained to her that simple issue about her employees not practicing cleanliness when serving customers food and that their establishment could get hit with health code violations, the manager abruptly interrupted me and immediately fired back saying "ummm I'm sorry sir, but we've been here for decades, and have never had any health violations." I then explained to the manager that just because they have never had any health issues does not mean that they should be serving customers without washing their hands. Especially after petting animals. Furthermore, I explained to her that I was perturbed by the defensiveness of her response, and that I found it very unwarranted. I also explained that I had an issue with her employees behaviour as well as her manager's behaviour. Her manager never once apologised and I brought it to her attention. She too, was very sarcastic and seemed very nonchalant about my concerns. It pains me to say this, but I don't think this is an establishment that really values customer service nor cleanliness. I've even been in the store before and have seen other customers ask their employees to use sheets when grabbing cupcakes and cookies and the employees outright refuse. This is a problem. A very serious problem. All this and more leads me to believe that, until they get these issues resolved, this particular Designer Desserts location is one that I think customers should avoid and do NOT recommend visiting. read more

AMAZING! Originally worked with Vanessa for my wedding cake and desserts October 2021 and had a great experience. We decided to use Designer Desserts again for our sons for birthday this past weekend with a "Wild One" theme. I didn't really have a super specific idea of what I wanted for the cake but told Vanessa the theme and sent her pictures of the balloons we were going to have. She spoke to the baker and sent me over an idea they had. It sounded great, I'm not super picky with this kinda stuff and I trusted they would do a good job. However I did not expect the cake to be as amazing as it was. My jaw literally dropped when I saw it. Not only was it delicious (strawberry shortcake) but it was so beautiful. The theme was on point I still can't believe how well they nailed it. They also made some themed cookies and cupcakes and we ordered a few other small bites, notably the lemon bars were amazing. For reference, this was a 14inch cake meant to feed 65+ people. We had around 80 guests, there was more than enough for everyone and we even had leftovers to send home with people. Simply amazing. I don't know how we were able to decide on just one cupcake as the selection they have is incredible! Such a cute shop in downtown. I really wanted to like this place because I love cute cupcake shops. Nice location right on the main street in town. I tried a box of 6 cupcakes and they just weren't very good. If you have ever had frosting that tastes sugary but no real flavor, it is like that. The cream cheese frosting on one of them tasted off. I have gotten cupcakes here twice within the past week, and man, they are delicious! We have thus far tried the carrot cake, s'mores, german chocolate, pink champagne, New York Style Cheesecake, and red velvet cupcakes. The cake is super moist, and the frosting can be a bit much, but overall the little treats are rich and delicious. The only thing I wish the bakery did differently with their cupcakes is modifying the cake to frosting ratio. The cupcakes do seem to have more frosting than cake, which I wish the opposite were true. So, from my end, I wish the cupcakes contained more cake than frosting - hence the 4 out of 5 stars. My wife likes the pink champagne a lot. But every cupcake we've had has been moist, rich, and absolutely scrumptious. Staff has always been pleasant and accommodating. Price is the main reason we don't come here too often, but it's really not too bad for a gourmet dessert. I always love coming home and stopping in and seeing what new products they have. I used to be here weekly before I moved to Connecticut, and just seeing Facebook posts of everything isn't the same. I'm sooooo excited for their Christmas cupcakes next week, as those are my absolute favorites of theirs that they make, in addition to the pink champagne frosted ones. The key lime cupcakes with the little candy wedge are my second absolute favorites as well. This is going to be just another review on how amazing this bakery is... another review on a very long list of positive reviews. But I could not, not... leave a review after last week. From start to finish the team at Designer Desserts were great. The ease of ordering our wedding cake gave me such great comfort. Picking it up, the staff were so helpful and accommodating to our smaller car. Tip, make sure you have lots of flat room when picking up large orders lol. The cake was exactly what we dreamed of, and melted in our mouths. Our guests were overjoyed when in their favor bags they had a cupcake that mirrored our cake to take home and have later. We got the orange dream cake with champagne toast frosting. Our guests said it was like tasting fruity pebbles and it felt so magical. This was not the wedding we planned, but it became the wedding of our dreams and this whole experience and ease helped calm my anxiety. Designer Desserts is a delightful, little bakery located across from the court house. The decor is very flamboyant and it reminded me of a playhouse for toddlers. I've only been here once to order an 8 inch gift box cake for my international friend's last birthday in the states. I was given various options for the cake flavor and filling, and I chose the vanilla/chocolate swirl cake with banana filling. The total came to a whopping $40 which is rather decent since it's customized and specially designed, but the cake flavor itself was contrary. The cake was a mouthful of sugar and the creme on the exterior was literally an inch or more thick. All in all, it was more of an eye candy and served its festive purpose. read more

That's crazy so I decided I would get two to share with a friend. I walked in..the place is cute as a button. The employees were sweet as cupcakes. And they notified me that cupcakes were $2.50 each. Okay! Maybe I'll get 4! First off...no joke there had to be over 40 cupcakes to choose from. I took a good 10 minutes to decide. I opted for The Elvis for my friend. Lemon (always my favorite flavor), Coconut Cream Pie (looked adorable!), and S'mores. $10 was my total! for 4 HUGE cupcakes!! Now, I drove 2 hours home, refrigerated them, and we are now sampling a bite of each now. Okay, so these cupcakes, are HUGE. No joke...worth $4 a pop. First off, each cupcake was super moist and not to sweet. So you won this cupcake freak over. I was sooo excited for the Lemon. I was happy it wasn't sweet but the curd tasted a little artificial for me (I'm a Chef and Baker...in professional kitchens for 10 years). I thought this would be the star for me but it was still delicious. So my friend loves Banana and Peanut Butter so The Elvis is for her. I tried it...and was blown away. Not overly sweet at all. The cake was a delicious banana and the Peanut Butter buttercream was smooth, creamy, and not too sweet. S'mores is always my favorite. I love Graham Crackers and Marshmallow. This is one of my favorite cupcake places in town as it's locally owned by a nice couple (two men) who support LGBTQ. Their prices aren't horrible but I recommend trying to go at night or early in the morning. At night- more cupcakes are discounted so they don't have stale ones the next day. Let me preface this by saying I attended Chicago's French Pastry School and I previously worked as assistant pastry chef at Le Meridien in Chicago before they sold it. I've been twice. When walking into Designer Desserts, one cannot help but feel happy. First off, you're about to see the most beautiful cupcakes ever made. Second of all, you're surrounded by lovely pastel colors that instantly lift your mood! The cheery ambiance really sets the tone for this place. I have been coming here for a few years now, and unfortunately, do not live in Northwest Indiana anymore. No more Designer Desserts for me (unless I'm in town visiting)! But I figured I would still write a review since I have been here many times before. Their selection is unmatched. I believe they have over 95+ different varieties total. On any given day, it's safe to say you'd at least have 50 different varieties to choose from. My favorites were their S'more cupcake and their Green Tea cupcake. And they usually have markdown prices for certain cupcakes with a pink sticker on the label. Score! They are very rich and always have an abundance of frosting. The way that these cupcakes are decorated is nothing short of amazing. Just a work of art. I miss this place and their awesome variety. I heard they do wedding cakes, too! Every time I've ever been here, it's been pretty crowded with people, so I think it's safe to say they're doing well and are getting good business. As they should be! The only thing I'd change is their hours. They have longer summertime hours, but during the fall and winter months, they start closing early in the evenings. But that's okay. You can't pass by the "Candy Corner" which has tons of old fashion candies that I remember from my childhood. I've been going to Designer Desserts for years and have never been disappointed. Their cupcakes are so creative and delicious. In addition to the plethora of cupcake flavors, they usually have several other desserts to choose from that change from time to time (brownies, lemon cheesecake bars, this mint chocolate brownie slice of heaven thing, mini pies) and they are all fabulous. This weekend, they made a tiered cake (pink champagne with gold frosting and pink flowers, I posted pictures below) and it was absolutely incredible - both aesthetically and in flavor. They went above and beyond anything I ever imagined. Whether you just want a tasty sweet treat or you're planning a big party or wedding, skip the grocery bakery (gag) and go to here! Me and a group of friends came in here after strolling in Downtown Valparaiso and we were amused by the cute decor of the place. Definitely a fun place for a mother-daughter pair to visit. There was an enormous selection of cupcakes to choose from; it took us a while to settle on a couple of them. They turns out too be pretty good and not overwhelming sweet as we thought they would be with the huge amount of icing on top. I also purchased pink hot chocolate which is basically white hot chocolate with pink food coloring topped with whip and pink sugar sprinkles. Pretty good for a cold winter day.
