I reserved the chef's table at Blackbarn for a September 9 business meal. It was a prefix menu, family style for 14 people - a first course, a main course, two side dishes, and a dessert course. I missed out on desert because I had to leave a bit early. The first course was the mangalitsa charcuterie and cheese plus pickles, house, jam, mustard, nuts, and fruit, it was plentiful and had very good cheese. The grilled corn and kale salad had quinoa, sunflower seeds, tomatoes, pickled jalapeño, baked ricotta, and avocado green goddess dressing. Very good as well. I loved it so much that I hope I can re-create it at home. The burratina & prosciutto San Danielle was surprisingly good. I say surprisingly because I am not a fan of prosciutto. I always pass on it. It always tastes old and porky. Someone mentioned that the prosciutto was really good and tasted fresh so I decided to try it and oh my God it was so good I ate quite a few pieces. I am a fan of their prosciutto! The main course was the mushroom ravioli, the grilled jumbo shrimp over polenta cake, ratatouille and filet mignon, which was braised with roasted shallots, garlic, and herb crumb borderlaise. My favorite was the ravioli and the shrimp on polenta cake. I was not a fan of the filet mignon, but only because it was braised. I prefer my steak, more natural and grilled and reddish pink in the middle. This doesn't take away any stars because that's just my personal preference and everybody else seemed to love it. Our waiter, Demetri, was amazing as well. Super friendly and made sure that were taken care of. We had some folks from our European, Japan and Australia offices and they raved about the food. Everyone was happy and the food plentiful. This was not my first time dining at Blackbarn and their food has always been pretty good. The place is really nice with a very trendy vibe. They also have a few other private dining rooms that are really very nice as well, but I wanted to try the chef table experience. However, I was worried that some folks would have had a problem that the chef's table wasn't completely private, but set off towards the back next to the kitchen and the waiter's station. We were so engrossed enjoying the food and just talking that we did not see what was going on around us. I was happy that everyone had a good experience because to be honest, I don't like being tucked away in a room, but I do like to experience a restaurant's vibe. I highly recommend Blackbarn and we plan to use them again.

Tasty restaurant with fun souffle making experience! Staff were extremely kind and helpful and food (esp steak and the tuna tartare were good). We did a soufflé making as part of a corporate event which was so fun and the perfect amount of engagement. The souffle was effectively made in front of us and the steps were explained - all we had to do was butter and sugar the ramekins and scoop the soufflé in. We then got to eat our own soufflé for dessert which was delicious!! Only one star knocked off bc the kitchen where we made the soufflés smelled kinda funky.

Came here for some apps and drinks. We sat at the bar. Bartender was very nice. The space of this place is nice too. I had a beer and my friends all had great looking cocktails like espresso martini, bloody mary and a mimosa. Fries were ordered but I did not try them as I was full. I would come back here to try the food.

The place is huge and has a modern feel. We were here for brunch on a Saturday and it was pretty empty. The short rib hash and egg was outstanding, though I thought the potato could have been crispier. The fresh juice was just ok. The service was great, very attentive.

I'm a sucker for rustic chic/farmhouse decor, so Blackbarn has been on my radar for a while just on the basis of potential eye porn. And while it did not disappoint visually, gastronomically, the carpet didn't match the drapes. Our best bite was the Big-Eye Tuna Tartare, which tasted fresh and refreshing. The Grilled Branzino for Two was a laughably small slab of fish for a whopping $85--if this entree fed two, I can only imagine they meant two mice. And of the listed accompaniments from the menu, it only came with a few sad stumps of potato and a tiny dish of olives; I suppose they could've fed half a third mouse. Side-wise, the Truffle Ricotta Gnocchi was overly rich to the point of being nauseating. The Crispy Layered Potatoes were well done, though too greasy. And...that was that. I will say, I enjoyed my Sunset mocktail, which was a fruity concoction of pineapple, lemon, grenadine, ginger, and egg white. Mmmm, country cocktail. In short, great for hosting your farmer cousin's next rehearsal dinner, not so great for affordable farm-to-table eats.

I came here on a Friday night right before a Knicks game. It's about a 10-minute walk for Madison square garden. So perfect if you're going to go watch a game or a show. The restaurant is huge and it's really beautifully decorated. Right when you walk in there is a bar that was very crowded and lively. As soon as I walked in I thought oh great. We may have to wait a long time for food because there's so many people at the bar. We were kind of on a time crunch because we wanted to get you the Knicks game for the first minute. So I had about an hour to eat and walk to MSG. I told the waiter that we kind of want to eat fast and he said no problem. I'll put your order in right away. The food was amazing, the menu screamed high end. They immediately brought us bread, breadsticks and butter with olive oil. It was all delicious. They had three different types of breads. I was impressed. I ordered the scallops over risotto and a side of roasted vegetables. Our meal came out in about 15 minutes and everything was fantastic. Really good flavors happening and my scallops were cooked perfect. The roasted vegetables was a nice touch and it was different kinds of vegetables then I'm used to. It was beets, carrots and some other veggies that I can't remember all sitting on a bed of hummus. It was fantastic and the perfect healthy side dish to my scallops. I would definitely return here whenever I'm in the area or going to watch a Knicks game.

I've been for brunch and dinner and both times were nice experiences. Definitely recommend the pastry sampler at brunch with banana bread, croissants, scones and donuts. The brunch entrees were mediocre and the server tried to rush us out since it was busy. But for dinner, we had great service and the food was excellent. The mushroom ravioli was melt-in-your-mouth delicious and while I never order chicken at restaurants, I decided to go with the crispy skin chicken with tomato panzanella salad and I did not regret it. Very cool ambiance.

Popular place. It's well located and cute inside. Nice, upscale vibes. Decent food and service, although not particularly memorable. Some of the appetizers were underwhelming. I would try it again just because it's such a popular spot, maybe other items are better. Otherwise I'm not sure I'd go back unless there was an event or happy hour happening.

Food was excellent. Great job John Doherty. Service was outstanding. Ambiance and atmosphere is inviting and comfortable. Plan to stage a few work events there over the next few months. Definitely on my list to visit again and often.

I been to this restaurant 2x for brunch and it never disappoints. The place it's very big and I like the clean elegant decor. The food it's always great and I love that you can taste the quality of the ingredients. I had the breaded chicken sandwich and not only was it delicious but a very generous portion. I will definitely come back next time I'm in the area.

Ambiance: this place definitely gave cozy, chill, home vibes which was perfect for our girl dinner. It was mellow and decorated with Christmas lights. Service: our server was Besnik and he was amazing. We asked him for all the food recommendations and told him to surprise us with the appetizer. He continuously checked in on us to make sure that we had an amazing experience which we did. Food: mushroom toast was absolutely phenomenal, the tomahawk was chefs kiss, the ribs fell right off the bone and the Brussels sprouts were tasty. We ate goood and left absolutely stuffed. The dirty martini was my least favorite so I'd probably steer away from ordering that again though. I'd definitely host another girls night dinner here again!

Blackbarn is one of the most underrated restaurants in NYC and I don't understand how it doesn't have at a minimum 4.5 stars on Yelp. The location is stunning, offering an array of seating from their tavern, main floor, outdoors, and private dining rooms on the sides. I have been a few time both for work and for dinner with friends and each time we always have a fantastic experience. What I look forward to each time is the seasonal menu items - right now items from the apps to drinks to desserts have some summer inspiration to them! Last night we ordered the Roasted Summer Peaches, the Seafood Tower, and the blueberry and black currant ice cream sandwich. The star of the show was the roasted peaches, but I would happily eat everything again! Our waiter was super attentive and helpful the entire evening, which is part of why I love blackbarn so much! The service is always top notch. One of my favorite menu items that we didn't order this time around is the ribs! If it's your first time at blackbarn, they're a must order!

Blackbarn has reopened, we just went there last weekend (early August 2021)!

Both failed epically. The bone marrow was inedible as it was like cold custard. Escargot had zero flavor and a real lack of garlic and good butter. Tasted more like vegetable oil than good butter. We shared the lobster pasta entree. Tasted more like Mexican goulash. No Italian flavors to be found in the sauce. Never once did the nameless waiter stop and inquire about our meal. Just all around a poor experience and a disappointing Friday night. There are far better places that appreciate your patronage. We will not be coming back. Not worth it.

The front part where you first walk in is the bar area with some tables. This restaurant is on the darker side and brings you back in time. Once you walk in further that is where the main dinning room is. This is also on the darker side as you can maybe tell by my photos. The wall paper and art around the restaurant is cool and there are some monkey statues around the restaurant. I was seated in a corner table in a booth area that seemed to be for at least 2-3 people. I thought for sure they would seat me at the bar area. I had a wonderful waitress whose name I think was Taylor but I could be wrong. I ordered the Monkey bread to start off with. It's a very buttery bread with truffle and parm cheese on top. I have alot of allergies and I was searching online if I could even have truffles as I have a nut allergy. So, I asked the waitress and she said she had never heard this. But, she came back to me and told me that White truffle grows near or like over where Almonds grow from but that, they don't use white truffle so I was all good. Well, this was super nice of her to check for me. I had no idea she was going to do this. She said the restaurant has strict protocols when it comes to food allergies. I then got for my main dish the double cheese burger with onions and pickles. To drink I had the cucumber martini. WOW everything was pretty darn good!! I passed on dessert. We started with drinks, and mine ended up being a surprise standout. I ordered the coconut margarita, slightly hesitant since I'm not usually a margarita fan--but it completely won me over. It struck a perfect balance and leaned just enough into the coconut to make it feel unique without being overpowering. My sister-in-law, who's pregnant, had a non-alcoholic Ritual margarita and loved it, noting how convincingly it mimicked the real thing. Since we were sharing, we got to try a good mix of the menu. The monkey bread came first--definitely a splurge at $34, but it's one of those fun, indulgent starters that's worth ordering at least once. While I wouldn't call it the best bread I've ever had, I also wouldn't change anything about it. The crab rangoon was another highlight. Having it made with real crab made a noticeable difference, and the dipping sauces complemented it really well. It felt like a more elevated take on something familiar. For mains, the French dip was a hit. The meat was incredibly tender, the bread had that ideal crusty exterior, and the au jus was packed with flavor--I was very glad I ordered extra. It pulled the whole dish together. We also tried the smoked whitefish Caesar, which was the only dish that didn't quite land for me. It was a well-made, fresh salad, but the smoked fish flavor was a bit overpowering and took over the balance of the dish. Even though we were too full for dessert, the restaurant surprised us with a scoop of strawberry ice cream with chocolate sauce to celebrate my sister-in-law's babymoon. It ended up being one of the most memorable bites of the meal--we're still talking about how good that ice cream was. We arrived right at 11:45, and by the time we left, the place was absolutely buzzing. It's clearly a popular spot, and for good reason. Between the lively atmosphere, strong service, and well-executed food, I'd highly recommend making a reservation if you can.

It was supposed to be a memorable milestone, but it turned out to be a massive, incredibly disappointing letdown. The issues began the moment we arrived. The host stand claimed I hadn't booked afternoon tea and had only reserved a standard table in the hotel bar. This was completely false, and I had to pull out my phone to show them both my text and email confirmations. Rather than apologizing, they offered absolutely no accommodation for their mistake until I actively asked for it. Their excuse? They claimed this "has happened before" with their reservation platform--an embarrassing admission for a luxury establishment. Next, they told us they were entirely out of tea sandwiches. I had to ask them to double-check. When the host returned, they magically found the sandwiches but claimed the tea room was completely full. We were instead shoved into a cramped bar corner right next to the service door, the cashier stand, and the station where the bar staff collected all the dirty dishes. To add insult to injury, when I walked past the actual tea room an hour later, it was two-thirds empty. The service itself was nonexistent. Our tea was abruptly plopped onto the table by a bar staffer who didn't say a single word and left. Thirty minutes later, the sandwiches were plopped down in the exact same dismissive manner, without any explanation of what was being served. I eventually had to ask the hostess for information, and she retrieved a tea room staff member to explain the menu. After that brief interaction, we received absolutely no other service except for water. To top it all off, management clearly does not care that our experience was so bad. The manager kept using the dismissive, canned phrase: "I'm sorry that your experience wasn't what you expected." I had to correct him more than once--this wasn't a matter of unmet "expectations," it was a matter of not getting what I paid for. I paid $433.00 for a premium afternoon tea experience and received bottom-tier service in a noisy dish-clearing corner. If The Whitby Hotel cannot handle basic hospitality, reservation logistics, or genuine customer service, they shouldn't offer afternoon tea at all. Avoid this place if you are looking to celebrate a special milestone.

Hands down the best restaurant experience my wife and I have ever had…read more We wanted to treat ourselves for our anniversary, and I had recently watched their Bon Appétit behind-the-scenes video. Their entire operation seemed so incredibly focused, meticulous, and inspiring that we knew we had to try it. We started with the Iberico ham and the hiramasa tart, both incredible. Then came the chilled lobster, which was super fresh and refreshing, served with an amazing sauce that made me want to lick the plate clean. Every dish felt refined without being overly complicated. The service was extraordinary. You can immediately tell the front-of-house team is operating at an extremely high level and is aware of everything happening in the room at all times. At one point, my wife stepped away to use the restroom just as they were about to serve the first course. Without saying a word or making anything awkward, the staff simply looped around a couple of times until she returned. The moment she sat down, they resumed service seamlessly without missing a beat. That level of awareness and professionalism really stood out to us. Next came the rye bread, which was fresh and crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside, paired with delicious butter. Then we had the sea bass with crab, which was phenomenal and one of my favorite dishes of the night. But the true star of the show for me was the lamb. My wife and I grill lamb racks often, and I genuinely had no idea this level of perfection existed. It was cooked flawlessly, and the sauce was absolutely incredible. If I was not in public, I probably would have been scraping the bone clean :) Big shoutout to one of the staff members, Stephanie, who completely made our night. We were telling her how excited we were to finally visit after watching the Bon Appétit video, and she casually asked if we wanted a tour of the kitchen after dinner. Honestly, I thought she was joking at first. Then she came back after dessert and reminded us. Even after paying the bill, I still thought maybe she was kidding, but then she walked over smiling and said, "Let's go." My wife and I were completely geeked out. Seeing the kitchen in person was surreal. It was exactly like the video: super meticulous, orders being called out and repeated in unison, everyone moving with total precision and purpose. You could see the Omega clock, the Michelin stars on the wall, and just the overall culture of excellence behind everything they do. We were honestly in awe. Thank you again, Stephanie. That experience meant so much to us. Every time we visit a fine dining restaurant for a special occasion, I always wonder whether it will truly live up to the hype. Some completely miss the mark. Some are very good. But none have delivered on every aspect the way The Modern did. This is officially our favorite restaurant in the world.

This spot is alllll about the shareable items…read more We visited for Mother's Day brunch and the restaurant was packed! However, we were greeted warmly and a server was with us very quickly. They did however seat us at a table that was directly in the way of a lot of movement through the restaurant. Many waiters found themselves squeezing between our table and another to attend to other tables. Some were carrying very heavy looking trays. Beyond that, we had a blast. We ordered the butter service, which was super fun! The waiters make a whole show of it, seasoning the butter at the table, talking it up a bit, and then allowing us to go to town. The added shallots on top bring an extra hit of umami. The chorizo spread was a little grainy for me, but others at the table were going for seconds and thirds. I especially enjoyed the marinated leeks and the eggplant dip it was also served with. Our entrees were a little underwhelming. We ordered the lobster frites and the french onion soup burger. The burger wasn't overtly French oniony. It was just a solidly good burger. The lobster was delicious, but not anything I am continuing to think about. What I am still thinking about though, are the creme brulees! We ordered the corn creme brulee for a side. It was sweet and salty, with a great crack and chew to the top. I also loved the espresso creme brulee for dessert, which also had a nice light saltiness to it. We also got the spicy orange carrots which were totally delicious. In addition to the espresso creme brulee, we also ordered the lemon ice cream cake. It was bright and refreshing. The only downsides were the wait for the desserts. The wait was so long that our waiter insisted that they would be comped for our inconvenience. However, they were still on the bill at the end of the meal. He did remove them immediately when we pointed them out, though. And finally, coat check accidentally gave our Mother's Day bouquet of flowers to the wrong mom! We wound up with a much prettier bunch, but lost our balloon as part of the switch. Oh well! Next time, we'll definitely be ordering the brulees and I'll be damned if I leave without having their french onion soup!

I am writing to share some constructive feedback regarding a recent dinner at Quality Bistro…read more Having been a loyal patron of Quality Meats and Quality Italian for many years, I was eager to experience your take on the French bistro concept. While there were highlights to the evening, several aspects of the experience did not meet the high standards I have come to associate with the Quality Branded family. First, I must address a significant comfort issue two weeks ago. Our group was seated in one of the large booths, and we found that the cushions were so soft that we sank down uncomfortably low. It was quite awkward to dine when several guests could barely see over the top of the table. For a restaurant of this caliber, guest ergonomics are essential, and I would strongly encourage looking into firmer seating support for those booths. Regarding the menu, we found the oysters to be a bit of a letdown for the $5 price point. The citrus toppings were so heavy-handed that they completely overwhelmed the natural flavor of the oyster. Additionally, as a long-time fan of Quality Meats, I found the steak to be lacking in both presentation and precise execution. I had hoped for a dish that mirrored the excellence of your sister properties, but this fell short of expectations. On a more positive note, your staff was incredibly friendly and attentive throughout the night. We also thoroughly enjoyed the bread and butter cart; the butter was truly lovely and stands up well against international varieties I have tried. Furthermore, your desserts are stunning and were the highlight of our meal. I share this because I truly enjoy your restaurant group and would love to see Quality Bistro refine these details to match the world-class experience of your other locations and competitive locations in the neighborhood. I look forward to returning in the future to see how the space evolves.
