I stepped into this small looking, simple tavern but then was transported to this gorgeous open kitchen restaurant when I walked to the back room. The interior decorating in the back restaurant was beautiful! The vibe is immaculate. I went here for my sister's birthday and would definitely come back! There was a slight hiccup in the beginning with being seated, but the food and service of our amazing European waiter made up for it. Even the bread tin was filled with scrumptious homemade bread, and was served with an incredible oil, balsamic, butter, garlic spread. Corn and Kale Salad: 10/10 I loved this salad! It wasn't too overdressed and the corn had an incredible barbecue flavor. Everything was bite sized and well tossed together. The cherry tomatoes and ricotta were such a great combination with the kale and corn too. Scallops: 10/10 The green sauce with the scallops was such a unique pair with the seafood. The scallops were well cooked. The cherry tomatoes and green sprouts were such a great combination as well. BBQ Ribs: 10/10 When I tell you the meat fell off the bone... it glided off the bone! The meat was soft, flavorful, and plentiful. The bbq sauce only added to this amazing dish. It was sweet, tangy, with a hint of spice and nothing like I had every tasted. The shoestring fries were too thin and crispy but well seasoned. Butternut Squash Ravioli: 10/10 Although butternut squash ravioli can only be so fancy at times, this one was fancy. So plush and filled quite liberally with an amazing butternut squash filling. It was almost like a butternut squash dumpling! I definitely recommend you get this even if as a starter to share. Chicken: 3/10 Unfortunately very disappointing. The chicken was cooked well but there wasn't any special rub or sauce. The vegetables that accompanies it were a weird combination. I'd advise it to be potatoes. Butterscotch Bread Pudding: 10/10 Do everyone at your table a favor and get this. The warm bread pudding with the cold vanilla ice cream is perfect. It's not too sweet and all the butterscotch with bread and rum is wonderful. No ingredient overpowered the other. Chocolate soufflé: 10/10 Read it again: chocolate soufflé. If you love chocolate this is your heaven. A crispy outer layer and a warm chocolate sauce in the cup. Chefs kiss** Overall, I loved this place. It's so unassuming from the outside too. It felt like a cool secret spot. Our waiter was also incredible and truly made the birthday dinner special. Thank you BlackBarn! read more

Large upscale American restaurant with a rustic farmhouse vibe Fairly small menu, but not terrible I got an espresso martini and the "Stableboy" drink, and they were both fantastic Complimentary bread basket with a bunch of different types of bread. The butter was also soaked in olive oil and balsamic vinegar, and it had chunks of garlic as well I got the chicken and it was a very large portion, but it was a little dry. The sides that came with it were very tasty however Our waiter was very friendly as well read more

This was our first visit to Blackbarn, but it won't be our last. From start to finish, the dinning experience was outstanding. We began with beautifully crafted cocktails, my wife had the "Midnight Special," while I enjoyed a perfect Rye Manhattan. At Serkan's suggestion, we shared the gnocchi as an appetizer, and it was the best I've ever had. For the main course I had the twin Filet Steak perfectly cooked and full of flavor. We ended on a high note with dessert cocktails and the pistachio ice cream cake, just note the brandies cherries on the side delivered a real kick. Impeccable service, amazing food and perfect cocktails. We are looking forward to returning. read more

Cavernous space, can feel Overwhelming and not the least bit intimate, however, it works for large groups. Entree portions are middle of the road (not small, not large) so if you go in with a normal person's appetite, you'll leave feeling full. Shellfish tower is appropriate for 3-4 guests. The red snapper and dole are adequate portioned and tasty. The filet mignon and butternut squash ravioli are worth it. Brussels sprouts were too oily so skip. Service was attentive and efficient. Would go back for a passionate-less office party or business lunch, maybe take my boss here or a family member from out of town since it's across the street from Madison Sq. Park and the Flatiron District. read more

Went for prix fixe Thanksgiving dinner ($125 for 4 courses) with family. Food was delicious, service was good. Would go again.

came here for brunch as it was highly suggested by another yelper alicia c and could not have loved it more. on a saturday afternoon there was a small crowd here. the ceilings are high, the place is quiet, it's also huge. service was ON POINT. the chicken n waffles is a must get! its perfect and modestly priced too! i loved the crunchy but soft outter skin of the chicken and the waffles were slightly sweet. dont forget to drown it in the sauce/cream! ps that salad of dark greens on the side was a nice mix for the heavy lunch. the loadded tots are perfect to share - let me tell you they were baked perfectly! read more

My coworkers and I had our annual holiday lunch here recently, and I would have given the place five stars if it weren't for the service. Because the food was very good. Standouts include the shrimp tacos and the tuna tartare, which even the picky eater of our group absolutely loved. The desserts--specifically, the Apple Cider Donuts and Rum Butterscotch bread pudding--were lick-the-plate-clean delicious. What nearly** wrecked the experience was the service. We were there for more than two hours and experienced huge wait times between courses. And it's not like we were a large group -- we were a party of 5 in a restaurant I would describe as cavernous (or "sprawling," according to their website), and the place wasn't even packed. **Giving credit where credit is due: when our waitress brought the check, she apologized for the service--"it's not usually like this," she said--and comped two of our four desserts. Very classy! read more

The food was okay, but unfortunately I went during lunch time with my coworkers (it was a department event) and the menu was limited. For example, I couldn't order the steak I wanted because the dinner menu wasn't available. This is not the restaurant's fault, but this did cloud my day because the only way I can make it through a meal with my coworkers is if I am sufficiently drunk and ordering lots of expensive food. Instead, I have to stare at my damn boss for 2 hours while snacking on tacos. Merry Christmas to me, I would've preferred coal in my stocking. read more

Came here on a Sunday after the brunch rush. Simply put, here how to navigate the menu: Do's: -salmon tartine the salmon was perfectly smoked, everything about this dish is amazing and so tasty! -Bacon steak, the flavor on this side was insane, must try! Won't regret it! Don't: -chicken and waffles, the waffles were so hard and dry I couldn't eat them and they we Parmesan encrusted. Very weird and extremely hard -the mocktails we're not available at brunch :/ Overall I would come back and have the smoked salmon again and try other dishes. They have a really cool indoor space (spacious and rustic), and seating outside as well. Staff is really friendly and has great recommendations of food to try. It's a solid option for a group event with several private rooms and a great family style menu that offers a nice range of options. We had a nice semi closed private room for our party of 15 and everything was well executed. The food itself was good - the short ribs and ravioli were definitely the standout dishes of the evening. We were guests here for a company function and the servers were really great, efficiently serving us and remaining pleasant even though tending to our large group must have been challenging. I'd not been here before and didn't know what to expect. The barn theme is prevalent in a large main seating area with a barn superstructure framework above the main dining room. We were in a room upstairs used for groups. The decor is simple but clean and elegant. The restaurant appears to be very progressive and focused on supporting local providers and healthy ingredients in their recipes. Our tasting menu featured a bread basket with a nice variety, salad, a poultry main, and a dessert. Everything was nicely prepared and presented and again I found the service excellent. The bread was typically evil and tasty and included some crispy sticks with a cheese flavor. The salad was pretty and very good. The chicken didn't really stand out in the meal but was solid and pleasing. Dessert was a pair of sorbet scoops, one raspberry and one mango; both were refreshing and light, the raspberry perhaps a bit on the tart side. Very pleased overall, the venue is versatile enough for casual or business and the food and service are both very good. read more

Been keeping an eye out for their reopening... Finally! Despite the relatively limited menu and higher price tag compared with pre-pandemic, I'm still very happy with our dinner experience. I had the Duck Breast Pastrami & Sausage, which was very good. The duck was juicy and seasoned perfectly, and the sausage had really good flavor too. Can't speak about the NY Strip (sorry, not really a steak person), but the black truffle mac n' cheese that came with made me go "daayum." I find most Mac and cheese disappointing, but this was super cheesy and creamy - like how it's supposed to be. Not sure why they don't serve it a la carte, but they should! The panna cotta had the perfect jiggle and was light and refreshing. I was a bit apprehensive after reading some recent reviews complaining about the service, but we didn't have any issues. They forgot to bring us the bread basket before our entrees arrived but nbd, not to mention it was a super busy night, yet we didn't feel rushed. read more

It's laughable how the reviews on here are so hyped about this almost cool place... The potential is just not met, be honest with your damn selves. Seriously, get off your dry, flavorless, forty two dollar pork shank high horse or ride the heck away from me. This food... this place epitomizes what this city is becoming, please save yourselves the trouble. The clear goal here is to what? Elevate something that's nothing special, right? Right. So do it, go for it, if you're going to elevate, ELEVATE... don't half ass it, I feel like you half assed it and shoved it in my face. Sorry, but you can't pull the fancy bland and boring cliched wool over my eyes where I'll say this is amazing. No, I took everything home and made a friggen mole quesadilla out of it that was better than anything this place has.... Then again, if you came here solely for the Octopus, you may actually leave with a four star review, if that dish was indicative of the other dishes, there'd be something very special between these wall.... Which sucks because it should be something incredibly special back there, but it just falls short for me. This spot needs open air, charcoal fired Greek food, and an entire vibe ... but that' could just be me wishing every single place was Meze by Gitano in Tulum. The octopus was great and I don't even want to ruin that experience with words.... everything else was a disappointment. read more

Very cool spot, plays hip hop in background. Had thanksgiving dinner here it was delicious.

I recently visited Blackbarn for a marketing industry function. When I arrived, I met some of the event hosts at the bar and sipped a Stable Boy cocktail, which included some of my favorite ingredients, such as mezcal and passion fruit. It was smoky, tart, and delicious. After we spent some time on introductions, we headed downstairs to their wine cellar, where the main function was being held. They had a small bar set up just outside of the dining area, where they were serving basic mixed drinks, wine, and beer. A bunch of us grabbed some beverages and stood around networking, until we were brought into the kitchen to learn how to make chocolate soufflés from executive chef, John Doherty. Chef was very welcoming, entertaining, and talented, making it a very enjoyable experience. We then headed back into the cellar for a wine pairing dinner, where each course was sourced from dinners at which Chef Doherty had cooked for world leaders. The first course was a Consommé with Wild Mushroom Ravioli, which was aromatic and rich with flavor, while also managing to be delicate. It was paired with the Banshee Ten of Cups Sparkling Brut from California. Next came the Seared Maine Diver Sea Scallop over a potato mousseline and topped with Oscetra caviar. The buttery scallop melted in my mouth, and for someone that typically was not a fan of mashed potatoes, the creamy mouselline won my heart. This was my favorite dish of the evening! The seafood course was matched with Domaine Sylvain Pataille's Marsannay Blanc from Burgundy, France. The Roast Rack of Lamb came next. The tender meat was served with rosemary jus and accompanied by an earthy eggplant and tomato terrine. It was paired with a 2017 Valdubon Reserva from the Ribera del Duero of Spain. From there, we transitioned to dessert, starting with a plate of creamy Brillat Saverin Cheese, served with a garden salad. The funky cheese went well with a second glass of the Spanish red wine. Lastly, we each got one of the Chocolate Soufflés with its sinful, gooey center. A sweet Sauternes from Chateau Roumieu-Lacoste in Bordeaux, France truly complemented the rich, fluffy pastry. From the beverages to the culinary delights, everything I tried that evening simply blew me away! In addition, the restaurant was absolutely gorgeous, and the staff was top-notch. For all of these reason, Blackbarn definitely offers one of the top dining experiences in Manhattan. (Also, while going to write this review, I noticed that I had a drafted, 5-star review from several years ago that I had not completed. Since some of the menu items still live on in some variation to this day, I am going to provide some brief feedback below from my initial visit: --Bread basket contained a cheesy roll, crisp breadsticks, and doughy white bread --Glass of 2009 Sighardt Donnabaum "Weingarten" Gruner Veltliner from Austria was AMAZING! The crisp white wine was particularly fruity for a Gruner and also possessed slight peppery notes. --Curried Cauliflower Steak with cilantro raita, toasted pine nuts, pickled raisins: included a bunch of additional, sautéed veggies, and the curry sauce was present without being overwhelming --Grilled Baby Octopus with a chickpea puree, fennel, and sundried tomato gremolata: Octopus was PERFECTLY cooked, but humus was a bit bland --Crispy Skinned Amish Chicken with ricotta gnocchi, autumn vegetables, grapes, parmesan: Chicken was moist and flavorful, but sauce was too buttery and heavy) read more

I've been wanting to try this place for awhile, so my friend and I finally went for brunch. The interior is spacious with high ceilings. There is an understated sophistication, with lots of wood. There was also a live jazz band playing, which gave the restaurant a nice ambiance. I ordered the Black Barn Burger, which was kind of pricey at $28. The burger was angus beef, and came with pork belly, fried egg, Gruyère, bbq sauce, along with a side of Parmesan fries. I asked for the egg to be fried over hard, which was accomplished (you wouldn't think this is a difficult request, but many brunch spots have messed this up). This was a pretty hefty and hearty burger. The beef was cooked perfectly, seasoned well and delightfully juicy, as well as tender. Then there was the pork belly, which was slightly crispy, and quite unctuous - I didn't care for the fatty part though. I really enjoyed the melty Gruyère cheese, which added to the deliciousness. The egg was pretty good as well - mild, savory tasting. There was only a little bbq, but it was bold in smoky flavor, so it was all that was needed. All of the ingredients combined together beautifully. It wasn't the best burger I had, but definitely one of the best brunch burgers I've tried. The Parmesan fries were thick cut, wonderfully crunchy, with a satisfying cheesy flavor. Service was solid. It will probably be awhile until I return and if I do, it would most likely for brunch because the dinner is even more expensive. Some of the menu offerings that sound good are Pepper Crusted Lamb Ribs and Fried Chicken & Waffles. read more

A friend from Yelp wanted to check out this spot for a few months so I agreed to go with about two weeks ago. I've heard of BlackBarn before and I think it was from a taste of tennis event but I'm not entirely sure what I ate that they represented. My guess is a slider of some variety. I do remember them being one of the better restaurants. Going to preface this with its a bit pricey but the ambiance in part you're paying for. It's a beautiful restaurant. Open and airy as if you're in a barn, yet modern and adjacent to Madison Square Park. They had live jazz music playing on a Saturday afternoon. I think they were temporarily not doing brunch on Sundays so we had to coordinate that. Cocktails are somewhat steep but you could squeeze my arm to splurge on a ten dollar beer. I went with just a Blue Point winter lager. It paired nicely with the burger. They do have a pretty decent happy hour that includes Saturdays. Shame it wasn't happy hour time when I went! lol. But 4:30-6:30pm all draft beers are $8, house wine $12, Mule cocktails $14, and discounts on a few appetizers. Back to the burger. It's an angus beef burger with pork belly, fried egg, jalapeno, gruyere, bbq sauce, and a side of parmesan fries. Is it the best burger I've ever had? I've had numerous close to being best burgers. But the answer sadly is no. But it's definitely up there as being a superior burger to many. The meat tasted of pretty good quality. It was cooked almost to my liking but could have been a smidge rarer. I feel these days chefs are nervous to cook and serve bloody meat but please, do so. Gruyere is the optimal of cheeses usually for burgers and pasta. That was nice as well as the runny egg and the sauces and the barest hint of jalapeno. A well thought-out myriad of flavors and spices that hit the right notes. The brioche bun was just the perfect vehicle for this beast. The fries of typical medium-thin cut were done crispy and had an interesting exterior of crunch. My friend got the exact same thing minus the beer. I think she enjoyed it but had a similar response in that it was a great burger but probably not the best ever. I'm glad with what I ordered because I can't justify spending a ton of money on a breakfast sandwich and the chicken and waffles while appealing looked tiny. It was a nice experience. Delicious. I'm just not a fan of spending $10-15 extra on something that I can find elsewhere for close to the same quality if not better. I did enjoy everything though and highly recommend coming in for happy hour. Heck, I'm definitely tempted to come back. Worth checking out and keeping on your radar for sure! read more

I came here on a Thursday with a friend to grab dinner. There was an event at the restaurant in the front, and this typically happens a lot on week nights for happy hour as there aren't too many options around flatiron for businesses to host an event. I'd definitely recommend a reservation so you get to sit in the back with more privacy for events and also better table service. Speaking of service, I was turned off by the hostess at the front desk who wasn't rude exactly but you just get a vibe that she doesn't take you seriously and judges people y their appearance. Additionally, we had a reservation at 7:30pm and didn't get seated until 7:50pm. We were told when we arrived that our table was being cleared, I'm not sure how busy it was but taking 20min to clear a table is kind of long! I'll give them the benefit of the doubt I guess. In terms of service at the table, the server was amazing. She was attentive, fast, knowledgeable, gave opinions on the menu when asked (which I really appreciate, I hate it when waiters don't know their own menu/have preferences), and didn't rush us. Now I can't say that for the table next to us. At one point, the waiter literally gave the couple next to us the dessert menu, and while the woman was in the restroom asked if the guy was ready to order dessert (typically most waiters wait until both are present), and then not 5min later when she's back, he literally comes and just grabs the menu, assuming that they don't want anything. It felt like he was rushing them to leave to get another table in. It felt super rude, but since it wasn't my server, I didn't say anything. This is why I rated this place 3 stars. I expect more from a restaurant like this. Moving on to food, I HIGHLY recommend the butternut squash ravioli. OMG IT'S TO DIE FOR, and I don't even like vegetarian anything (my friend ordered it and I stole a bite LOL). It was just the right texture, consistency, and flavor (not overpoweringly sweet.) Our only complaint was that 4 just wasn't enough to satisfy us! We also ordered the prosciutto arugula pizza appetizer and the grilled octopus. Both were just ok. I do recommend the bread pudding for dessert though it was a tad too sweet with both the ice cream and caramel. It was a large portion, definitely needs to be shared read more

Came to BLACKBARN this past Sunday after a workout with a friend. It was pretty busy and didn't have many tables available so we just sat at the bar -- surprisingly roomy. This place isn't anything too special except for the live music they have on Sunday's. The ambiance was cute, dimly lit with cute decorations lingering from the holidays. The bartender that served us was very friendly, but busy. Everything took its sweet time coming out and it was a little cold upon arrival. Food was, as stated earlier, nothing special. We got the fried chicken and waffles and while decent, was almost too dry to scarf down. Swallowing those waffles felt like eating chalk. The sauce couldn't even save the texture unfortunately. Good thing the side salad had some moisture! The side of sweet potatoes was also extremely burnt to a crisp. How could they even serve that? The cakes with ricotta and honeycomb were also too dry to eat. Super disappointing that I had to wash down each bite with water to avoid dehydration. The thing that saves this restaurant was really the live music and overall decor. Passing by is sufficient enough. read more

Nice atmosphere and helpful staff. However, I would strongly recommend against going here if you are vegan or going with someone who is vegan (who does not eat meat, eggs, dairy). Their vegan option was basic, last-minute, and with minimal preparation and seasoning. It was so bad I couldn't get through half of it. It's easy to make delicious vegan food and so many restaurants are able to provide high-quality alternatives to animal-based food, so it's quite embarrassing that this is the best they were able to do, especially considering the extremely high prices. Throwing a few cheap vegetables on a plate is not acceptable. There are loads of great places in New York who cater to everyone including vegans - go to one of those instead. read more

Blackbarn is a farm-to-table American cuisine. Came here for a work lunch and I've heard great things about this place! BUT the only thing I had an issue was the service. I ordered tea and it look literally 15-20mins. The service was really slow...and my colleague ordered the gnocchi with salmon which was pretty raw. This was truly the worst NYC experience in my life. The food was fine. Service was great. Was with a friend. we split the bill. I saved up for this meal. I could only leave a 10% tip. My understanding is that a tip is gratuitous and not required. I did the best I could. Waiter came over in front of my whole table and said, "my manager wants to know why you only left a 10% tip." Our experience at Blackbarn is a great example of how often price does not correlate to quality. This was one of the worst meals we have had in NYC at this price point. And we *live* here, meaning the opportunity to be disappointed is not just based on tourism. So, specifically: The "Grilled Marinated Eggplant" was served cold--not mentioned in the menu--and in our case came just-from-the-fridge cold. As in: much too cold. The "Big-Eye Tuna Tartare" was a waste of fish because it was buried under so much stuff (theoretically mashed avocado that was more like guacamole, plus pieces of tortilla chips) that you really couldn't taste the tuna. And again, served very cold. Orindarily, tuna tartare is one of those dishes we will always order if it's on the menu, but this was bad enough to cause a rethink of that strategy in the future. The "Grilled Amish Chicken" could use an actual Amish person to edit this into a simpler dish; as it was, it had too many random items mixed in, seemingly just for the heck of it. None of it added to or augmented the flavors in a good way. And the "Eight Hour BBQ Beef Ribs" were *perfectly* cooked--but the "Chipotle-Orange rub" was actually more like a smother, totally overwhelming the dish, while the steak fries that come with it were too salty. I won't bore you with the dessert review. But I don't want to leave out the dish that came with the bread basket: a small ramekin containing olive oil, Balsamic vinegar, a clove of roasted garlic, and a pat of butter. People: pick one! What I can say is that the service was friendly and efficient, and for that we were grateful. None of this was the waiter's fault. The "Smoke On The Water" cocktail is delightful, too. However, not enough reason to ever go back. read more
