We're glad we came here. We had a party of six on the key day of Winter Rendezvous, the LGBT week at Stowe. Which means that before the main event and celebration on Saturday, every restaurant within 15 miles of Stowe was booked solid. We tried Waterbury and the Blackback Pub seemed to be an optimum place as they had a vegan-friendly menu to satisfy some of our group, but they stated that their no-reservations policy meant we should be there early. So we got there promptly at 6 PM and it was packed. The head waiter asked us if we made reservations and we told them that their policy was no reservations. We were confused, but he said that they do make them for groups. Still, they managed to seat us, a group of six people, at a table near the bar which turned out to be one of the best seats in the house as we were able to admire their unending brew selection. Speaking of their new selection, it is as ample as it can be. A wide selection of local brewhouses, IPAs from Alchemist to Foley Brothers, Hill Farmstead, Burlington Beer, and River Roost among them, and for the non-IPA folks, a true emporium of ales, barleys, saissons, stouts, ciders, as well as German styled Helles and Pilsners. We enjoyed quite a few of their IPAs and Saissons. For eating, we tried to share different plates so we got to taste some of their delicacies. For the vegan offerings, their roasted Brussel Sprouts were some of the best I've ever had. Crispy but not dry, which is hard to get on Brussel Sprouts. Their walnuts and dates and dressing lent a beautiful taste to this plate. Highly recommended. Likewise, their Patatas Bravas, fingerling potatoes in a well-condimented tomato sauce with paprika aioli, was succulent. And so was their Fattoush. On the non-vegan, their seared scallops were heavenly. Their Arrabiata with oyster mushrooms, the pulled pork sandwich and the classic cheeseburger were in our faire. The ambiance was superb, totally friendly folks in search of a good time. Plenty of skiers, hikers, campers and locals. We left happy, full, and thankful, soon to return. read more

The beer list is absolutely incredible. The food was divine. I ordered the jerk chicken dinner. The risotto cake was crispy, almost crunchy outside and sweet and creamy inside. The jerk chicken was spicy, flavorful and tender. My companion 's meatloaf sandwich was good, but I was too busy tucking into my own meal to have more than a bite. Stopped in for a quick lunch before touring the Ben and jerry factory. The gentleman assisting us was very friendly, quick and courteous. We got the pretzel sticks which came with the most delicious warm cheese dip! Pretzels were good sized, thick and doughy. 10/10! This IS our reason for heading to Waterbury every Fall. Each October or November we road trip from Maine to Waterbury/Stowe for a midweek, pre-holiday getaway. Every year the first stop is Blackback Pub. We sit at the bar and learn about the best and newest VT beers. Bartenders are super knowledgeable about the 32 beers on tap and every year we walk away with new knowledge and a full stomach. Food is really thoughtful pub food, not your average bar burger. I had the meatloaf sandwich which is homemade, loaded with cheese and greens. It's served on grilled bread. I quickly snagged one of my husband's 3 seared tuna buns, delicious tuna with wasabi and greens. He was slightly disappointed the bun only had one small piece of tuna inside but it was very good. Lots of Hills farmstead beers on tap. We arrived at 12:15 on a Wednesday and found a seat at the bar. Place was packed by 12:4. Very comfortable atmosphere, rustic upscale pub. A must do. read more

We came here on a whim, based on some promising reviews. I'm always a little leery in blindly following online reviews, but figured it was worth a shot- worst case we are still walking distance to a few options. Thankfully, there was zero need to go anywhere else!! We walked in, and were able to grab a seat at the bar quickly and easily. Tristan greeted us immediately- his suggestions for both food and drinks were on point. He made us feel right at home, but also was willing to make beer recommendations when I asked for a little guidance. Plus he was a riot- great sense of humor!! First, let's discuss the nachos: they're not typical (even if they kind of sound that way) - the blue cheese is a pleasant surprise, but the hint of maple was totally unexpected and OUT OF THIS WORLD. The steak came out perfectly cooked, with an excellent sear and was insanely tender. Normally I don't find sides to be particularly outstanding, but here we are- the potatoes were FREAKING DELICIOUS and the veggies melted in your mouth. Do yourself a favor- ask for the dessert specials and pray they have the cheesecake or the mousse, they were outstanding (and I don't even like cheesecake)!!! The bar has an awesome vibe- laid back yet fun. However, the thing that makes or breaks a restaurant is it's staff... every single person we met there was welcoming, warm and friendly. Came here on a family trip to Vermont. They don't do reservations so it's first come first serve. We got there right at 5 for the start of dinner service, and were able to snag a table. It got even busier after we got there and people were waiting for tables. Beer list is elaborate. Lots of options and styles. Food was very good. Try the pub nachos. We got the shrimp scampi and chicken piccata. Well plated and both were flavorful and well cooked. The only thing I would say slightly negative was that we felt a bit rushed, with tables in demand. Our waiter who was nice, didn't ask if we wanted another drink or dessert, but commented that he would get the check. I just found that unusual with most restaurants asking questions like the above. Our toddler was ready to go, so we were about to leave anyway, so he might have anticipated that, but we still felt a bit rushed. We were there for barely an hour. I would still recommend! read more

Always fresh, always good. He loves what he cooks and cooks it with love. He is always willing to talk with you as well. Food is wonderful. Always a great special to try. But classic burgers and pub fare with a twist. And the beer selection is spectacular. They usually have Hill Farmstead on draft! That's rare. And the atmosphere is like an old Vt pub. Took our two little kids here after skiing and the Ben & Jerry's tour. They were fairly busy on a Wednesday evening, but sat us at the bar within a few minutes. They were welcoming and friendly with the kids. The inside is a cozy classic atmosphere. The number of unique beers on tap was a bit overwhelming but they helped us pick a few, one of which - the Wunderkammer - was unlike anything I've had before, but really enjoyable. Lastly, the food was surprising incredible given the pub like atmosphere. We got the pull pork buns which were soft and flavorful, the potatoes which were to die for and the greek chicken pita sandwich which was also well executed. Updated 11/19/2022 I figured I'd update my review after not going to Blackback for a while, due to an incident. As I said, we finally decided to go back, and everything was great again. I had the NY Strip steak and it was a great piece of meat, cooked as I asked (medium). It was served with a generous portion of mashed potatoes (with gravy) and broccoli & carrots. There was a slab of compound button on top of the steak, which I promptly moved to the side, and there was plenty of buttery taste on the steak. Everything was very good. Wife started with the Sesame Crusted Seared Ahi Tuna appetizer (with perfect tasting wasabi dressing and pickled ginger on the side). Again, perfectly cooked. Then she had the Caesar salad with shrimp. No complaints. (I've always been a fan of their Caesar salad... plain, simple, not overly dressed... can't go wrong there!) The specials were on the blackboard and sounded good, I just wasn't interested in them. No beer or cider for us that night, but as usual, a lengthy list with a lot of great breweries. read more

Lots of the beer they had were local and breweries I hadn't heard of before, so I deeply wished it was not next going to be my time to drive! Oh well! We got the Heady Dipper and the BBQ Pork sandwiches, both served with chips. We split them. Both were good, though the dipping sauce with the Heady Dipper was especially good. I arrived in Waterberry, Vermont today for a MINI Cooper Rally called MINI Takes the States 2022. I was looking for a place to eat and I found that Blackback Pub was open around 730 at night. I walked in and it was super crowded. Lots of happy people drinking beer and eating. They have lots of beer on tap. I had a pale ale that the bartender picked out for me. Sorry I don't remember the name. It was yummy. I sat at the bar because all of the other tables were taken. It seemed to be pretty busy, however they were moving tables in and out at a rapid pace. So it didn't take too long to wait for a seat. I ordered the Chicken Piccata, it came with angel hair pasta, lemon-caper white wine sauce with carrots and green beans. The chicken was amazing. It was moist, full of flavor, the sauce was delicate and creamy and just the right amount of tartness. The vegetables were perfectly cooked. They still tasted like vegetables, but they weren't too hard and they weren't too soft. The whole meal was just excellent! I highly recommend this place for drinks , food. Be great service. HIGHLY RECOMMEND: It was our first night staying near Waterbury - we are here for 1 week. We have traveled a lot within the USA and globally, and a vibe and service like we had here is going to be fully memorable. Some nights out, while traveling, are forgettable but not the visit to Blackback Pub. We researched where to go out for a drink and dinner. Blackback Pub was at the top of several reviews and I can see why! The moment I walked in the door, I was greeted and offered a table with a little bit of a wait or two seats at the bar immediately. I opted for the bar and I am so glad I did. It allowed us to interact with the wonderful staff. Tristan and Ben were outstanding behind the bar. Tristan's assistance with both food and beer choices was very helpful. He even let us know the beef for the steak and burger were local. It seemed that every question was met with a little extra nugget of info. There was a really steady stream of patrons coming in. Nonstop it seemed. The owner was at the door greeting and seating guests for most of the time. It was a nice touch seeing a hand's-on owner. I had the steak and it was delicious plus cooked exactly as it should have been. My husband had nachos that he loved. Beers were delicious. Overall an excellent evening out. We returned to this pub for the second time on a very busy Saturday night. It is definitely a hopping place and we had to wait for a table but not too long. We had been dreaming about the maple bacon cheddar pub nachos since the last time we were in town a year ago and they didn't disappoint. We also had the broccolini with peanut sauce which was a nice, fresh addition. My daughter had the brisket steamed buns, my husband the meatloaf sandwich and I had the pulled pork. We went to Stowe Mountain Resort for our 25th wedding anniversary and it rained all day. I had planned to ride the gondola and see the fall foliage. The resort closed the gondolas today October 12.. :( So I went to create an incredible alternative and found this Pub. Wow did they knock it out of the park. Family owned incredible nachos and specials. Don't even get me started on the customer service owner occupied and operated husband and wife. 2 people doing the work of 4 with a smile and never waited for a beer refill or food suggestion. I heard "Yes" and "My pleasure" more than I did as a child asking for support from a coach.
