Did this for date night for the wifey + myself I'll break it down: Quality: Nobody complained about the steaks, I had a New York Steak, done right, full of yum! No complaints from the other end about her club steak either. The Loaded Potatoes we had as an appetizer were full of yum, salads were fresh. Very good! Service: We came at a mildly busy time (early Saturday evening), got plenty of attention, and servers were sharp on the drink refills. Price: Definitely a premium price. Simply on budget they will forever remain a high end option, not heavily visited option for me. Two people depending on your appetites for food and drinks can easily top $100. But for what you get, I'll pay :-) even if not as often as they'd like. In short, will be back every now and again. read more

We had a tradition of going into Loveland to eat at the Steer. That tradition is over. We ordered two appetizers and two entrees and not one thing was close to cooked right. The apps were burned beyond recognition. My steak ordered medium rare came over beyond well done. When I asked for a retry. They brought me a frozen steak that had been seared. And I mean frozen hard center. Obviously not an advocate for food safety. I let it go and tried to follow up four times with management but they could never be reached. If you value your health and/or sanity I would steer clear of the Steer. Too bad they're letting the restaurant go, used to be a cute place. read more

Well, I deducted 2 stars due to 1) we entered in the front entrance, had to walk all the way through the restaurant to the hostess station and then they seated us all the way back at the front. Given one of our party is mobility limited, more self-awareness is definitely needed and the real topper; 2) they came to the table after we were finished (but still enjoying conversation) and rudely asked us to leave to seat another group. Never in my many years of eating across three continents and countless restaurants have I been asked to leave when I was done. On a recent visit to Denver (Loveland) my cousin suggested "The Black Steer". I like the fact that they have free parking in the back of the restaurant. The staff was friendly when entering the restaurant and was seated right away. I ordered "The Pepper Steak" I figured how can you go wrong with their famous "Signature steak". The steak looked perfect it had nice grill marks, good portion and it looked really good once I made my first cut and my sister said that's just the way I like my steak, cooked perfectly but regrettably it was tough. There were 10 people in our group and I didn't want to wait for another steak so I just ate it and let it go at that. My other sister on the other hand ordered the Steak Sandwich and she said that it was delicious and it was like eating a filet. My other sister ordered the Chicken Fried Steak and to my surprise it had dark brown gravy on it. I have never seen Chicken Fried Steak with dark brown gravy; it said "homemade mushroom gravy" on the menu. At the very least the waitress should have mention that the gravy is brown and not the usual white gravy similar to biscuits & gravy. My other cousin unbeknownst to me ordered the Pepper Steak as well and I asked her how she liked it she said "it was good but overcooked". I liked the restaurant overall the staff was pleasant and helpful especially our waitress she was super she even did separate checks, most restaurants know it takes up a lot of time with separate checks with a party of ten so my hat is off to her, also she was very good at refilling our iced teas and soft drinks. The rolls were very good nice and warm. Another nice touch was the good sized soft butter and sour cream with my baked potato that was cooked perfectly. All in all I like the restaurant and the staff and the prices are fair considering the portions but I'm sad to say I wouldn't order the Pepper Steak again. In fairness it could be that the chef had an off day or he had the day off. My cousin and I will be back on my next visit to Loveland. read more

A tale of an icons demise in 2021. I was introduced to the Black Steer 47 years ago on my 16 birthday. It has been my goto place for dates, birthdays, anniversaries, and special out of town guests. I estimate I have enjoyed well over 300 meals here. The steaks have always been fantastic and I like the intimate atmosphere. The staff was (past tense) very friendly, local, and attentive. They always welcomed you like a friend. It used to be the very best steakhouse in northern Colorado. In January, I made reservations a week ahead for my sweethearts birthday and she looked forward all week for her favorite steak. We show up and there is no reservation. The hostess didn't seem to care and after an excruciatingly painful wait 2x longer that promised we left. In early February, I made reservations for my 83 year old mom for her favorite steak. Again, there was no reservation. Total disappointment! Again, the hostess didn't care. I called and complained to the manager that this happened twice. And tonight, for our anniversary, rather than a reservation we called ahead to get on the waiting list. We were told they do not keep a waiting list but agreed to hold a table if we got there in the next 20 minutes. I gave the hostess my name and when we showed up they had a reservation list and a waiting list that did not include us. They did not have a table for us despite a promise they would hold it. To make things worse the hostess did t even seem to care - it was always an oh well attitude. I asked for the owners phone number to which she refused to give. I just cannot plan a special dinner for a loved one anymore to have it messed up like this. I can no longer recommend this place when the hostesses cannot perform their basic job and the management, who was made aware of the problem, obviously didn't handle it. Three strikes and you are out. It is so very sad to see what used to be an icon in our community turn into this. read more

I had filet mignon, my husband had a T-bone and our daughter had the Pepper steak. As soon as they brought the food out we could tell it was "fresh frozen." Absolutely no juice or beautiful red color to our medium-rare steaks. My daughter's pepper steak was so hard we could hardly cut into it. French fries were not fresh and certainly over-cooked to hide that fact. Can we talk about their serving "plates" please? They're metal with plastic holders(?) or something? Why? Took the wife out for dinner. She'd requested steak as we rarely have the chance to go out so I recommended a local "steak" house. Ordered the "signature" pepper steak. 10oz pepper sirloin with baked potato. I'll start by saying the steak was cooked to order (rare-medium rare). Problem was it was still an incredibly "chewy" piece of meat. Grisly. Furthermore, the steak had very limited flavor. After salting and peppering the steak, the texture was still a turn off. Not sure if the steaks are souved in advance to the appropriate temp and then finished on the grill but the steak had limited charring/crust. This could have added to the lack of texture/flavor. Beer was still good. Wife's Chicken fried chicken was also good. Seared Ahi tuna also was excellent. Problem being, if you're a steak house it is imperative that your team does steaks well. Ate less than 1/4 of the 23$ steak. Informed the server. They offered a recook or different item but as it was getting late, we decided to forgo a replacement item to get back home to the kids. Figured their team would make it right. In the end, they deducted a 5$ beer for a more than 80$ ticket as their policy is to only replace and not deduct any food item sent back. Maybe they make a good burger. Maybe the grill wasn't hot enough. Either way, steak was sub-par and the food to table time was rather lengthy to end up disappointed. Two stars as the waitress was sweet and the wife's cocktail and beer were both good. read more

This was my girlfriends and I second chance for this restaurant. I understand it's busy and it takes extra effort to handle yourself professionally. We walk in and expect to speak to the hostess which is ironically in the very back of the restaurant but if you're back door kind of person it's the first thing in line. That was the good part. I ordered a steak extra baked potato salad very normal. I much prefer New York strip so that's what I ordered. The food actually came up pretty quick however the steak was under cooked and very Marberly which is the reason why I try to order a New York strip. It definitely look like a ribeye I'm not new to steaks but I swore it was. It was the exact same mail that I ordered the first time and it was marvelly cooked pretty decent that time but took forever. The waitress came back to the table to check on food and I said this is not cooked correctly and I I believe this is a ribeye and not a New York, She said well it looks like a New York to me how you would be able to tell after its been cut the hell I don't know? She said OK let me go get a plate and will get you a new steak started. Took the old piece of crap away because apparently needed a show to her manager for some QC something blah blah blah. The second steak showed up and said OK would you cut into this to see how it looks. Cut it in half and it looks like tuna raw as fuck! Oh it looks done to me! Are you kidding me. Came back and said the manager approved removal of the steak but I still had to pay for a baked potato what the hell and a salad what the hell! I am only leaving 1 star because our server was prompt and courteous. Steaks were cold and tough and not cooked to requested temperature. When we complained we were told they could grill a little longer or make a new steak but if we ate them we had to pay for them. One steak was sent back and came out a minute later and was still cold! The worst part was we could hear the kitchen staff saying "they didn't give a shit"! We literally sat there for 10 mins listening to the waitstaff and the cooks argue about who was going to have to pay for our food!! Completely disappointed and honestly a bit offended!! My husband and I went here for our anniversary. I ordered the Ahi Tuna with baked potato. I've had excellent seared Ahi before. This was not even mediocre. It was dry and had zero seasoning and was topped with raw unseasoned onions and cucumber. The potato had the taste and consistency of having been baked the day before (possibly even two days before) then reheated. My husband had the citrus salmon. My friend and I have eaten here numerous times. Last night was our last visit. The MR steaks we ordered were delivered MW. We sent them back. 4o minutes later the waitress brought out two more steaks that were also overcooked, tough and tasteless. My friend complained and the waitress offered to take them back again. It was almost comical. An "institution" steakhouse that can't cook steaks. We didn't eat our steaks, but we paid for them. I overheard an exchange at the bar. A waitress asked a couple how their steaks were. The young woman said her husband's steak was tough. When he tried to cut it, it looked like he was sawing a limb off a tree. They offered to cook another for him. He wisely declined. When one waitress commented to another about the guy's steak being tough, she said she had heard that several times tonight.
