3 out of the 4 steaks were ok. The 4th one had many tendons through out it. My daughter hates sending things back but when i noticed her sawing on her steak like possessed zombie i asked whats was wrong. I saw her steak, not good. I asked the waitress to take this back to the cook two times before she did and and ask him what he thought She brought the check but no reply. I asked for the manager to return the check. The manager walked up with a snoot full of attitude and after me questioning her on the lack of quality, she informed me that it policy to not do anything for bad food if the customer doesn't immediately tell the staff of the issue on the first bite. I ordered $170 with of food to be delivered. I was told it was going to be 35 minutes and it arrived over 1 hour later cold. It was over cooked and all was cold. Also there was no silverware. I had to eat my lobster with my fingers. They offered me a $20 gift card which was ridiculous. They were not willing to work with us despite 3 calls...even the manager was no help. I came here for drinks only with some co-workers. Honestly the service was good which deserves higher stars than what I gave it, but the drinks were uninspiring. I ordered a Guinness and was dismayed to see essentially a juice glass delivered to my table to pour it in. My co-workers ordered a dirty martini (also in what looked to be a small juice glass) and a pomegranate vodka with soda water (also in what looked to be a tall juice glass). It might seem silly to be writing a review based on barware, but certain glasses are made for certain drinks and it isn't just for appearance sake. I first ate here in the mid 1990's and thought that 25+ years was long enough to return! I would say that my dinner (out of 3) was the best. I ordered French Onion Soup to start. very sweet, thick and cheesy- as I like it. the salad was mostly iceberg, but the French dressing, did indeed, dress it up. The steak was slightly more cooked than ordered and so were those of my two friends. It was, though, very good. disappointed with the baked potato - small round like you would boil and mash. I believe the butter was that nasty kind with the oil in it. A wedge of watermelon was added (which I did not find appealing) and a wilted piece of parsley. No dessert was ordered. The waitress; Teresa, won no praise from us. She was efficient, at first, but neglected to follow-up after the food was delivered. We never received water, never delivered a second beer that was still sitting on the bar when we left and never checked in on us. One friend refused to pay for his mostly uneaten steak due to toughness and she never apologized or offered another. I did not watch other tables, except once, when the new people at an adjoining table asked to have the table wiped of prior crumbs. The only other thing that was negative was that the pepper shaker had a dented in lid that refused to shake out. It was like deja' vu walking into to the Black Steer! It instantly reminded us of the Charco Broiler in Fort Collins, same decor, same chex cereal on salad, same slice of fruit with dinner, we couldn't believe ourselves! I can't believe all the bellyaching about the chex and the fruit slice, they have been doing this for years, many, many years, I don't know why it throws people off. It's just their own little touch. Yes the decor is old but it feels like stepping back in time a little, and we are in the west, right? The place is kept very clean, we both got the ribeye, baked potato (hint, they boil them first) and the salad, of course the salad, we wouldn't miss the salad with the chex cereal. We liked the idea so much we bought a box of chex cereal to put on our salads at home. Our steak was so delicious, and big. I couldn't eat all of mine so my husband and I split it for dinner tonight, it was good heated up, the trick is to use the broiler to reheat it. I got cheese and bacon on my baked potato with the butter and sour cream, it was very good. Alex was our server, she did a great job. It is strange that the have an alcohol menu, after she took our order we remembered we wanted a margarita and didn't see one on the menu. I went to catch Alex and told her we wanted a top shelf marg, she didn't know what that entailed exactly, her colleague Diane new it, she was standing next to us working on something and overheard me, she said, you want Patron right, I looked at her and said yes, and Grand Marnier, yes again! She must have been a bar tender. We've ordered the same margarita at different restaurants before but this one was just perfect! It was worth paying extra for, and it was a large margarita. I would say, if you can understand that the decor is cowboy decor from the 1960's, the melon is a nod to Colorado melon growers, It used to be cantaloupe until they had issues a few years ago. Rocky Ford Melons out of southern Colorado used to be known for the best melons in the country. And if you can understand that the Chex cereal is what they and a lot of their customers think is a good alternative to hard crunchy, sometimes oily with a short shelf life crouton, then you're on your way to being a regular. I would encourage anyone who has had a bad experience here to keep all of this in mind and give them another chance. Restaurants in Colorado, where tourism is our main industry, can have a hard time keeping consistent help. They do their best but sometimes it isn't in their control. I'm not a big chain restaurant kind of guy. We Really like supporting locals. I've been in Colorado for 5yrs now and Loveland for 3 of those. We've eaten at almost every one downtown. We've heard good and decent reviews and Finally got to go last night 6pm. The ambiance was nice as you walk in. But unless you make a reservation (in which you get the nice tables up front) you'll be sent to the back for walk-ins. Very open and Quite a bit louder back their and can hardly hear the music, as much as up front where it's more Intimate. That's just the atmosphere I'm setting. The waitress was nice but couldn't hear me a few times so I had to speak up. They were busy so we did have to wait a little bit for our food. Since it's a Steak place, My Wife ordered the Steak sandwich,MW and I the Club steak (Aged),M. Do not get me wrong, they Are Thick cuts, but for the sandwich I had to slice it in half for her to manage it. She said it was very Chewy and tough and couldn't eat it as the sandwich but could when she cut it and ate it by itself without the bun. I tried it and was like she said. Mine was about the same but tender. In our opinion, Both lacked Flavor. I asked for mixed veggies without squash but got them anyway. I just put them aside. I was excited to try the Black Steer. Parking in the "Rear of the Steer" is catchy and fun. We entered the restaurant and your immediately in the bar, which appeared to offer quite a lot of variety. As we walked forward, it wasn't clear where we were to go. There were a few people doing random things but nobody greeted us. A waitress finally asked us how many and made a comment about the hostess being somewhere and said follow me. As we walked in thru the restaurant we were handed off to the hostess who then seated us. Our first impression of the restaurant was it's totally dead, no body was there and this was at the heart of dinner time. Our waitress introduced herself and asked if we had heard or seen the special? We said no and she explained it to us. She took our drink and appetizer order and left us to decide. After reviewing the menu, it became clear to me the special wasn't really all that special. The difference was 2 shrimp and the cost was the same. Our appetizers arrived and she took our order. The Appetizers were fried pickle spears and Calamari. The pickles were good. They were hot and about 6 to the order. The Calamari was on a small plate with a side of sweet dipping sauce. The sauce wasn't good, it tasted like sweet pickle relish and the calamari was very fishy and warm in temp. We did not finish the calamari. The salads arrived and we were all surprised to see our salads with Checks cereal as croutons. We kind of looked at each other puzzled. The dressings were ok, displayed in a to go clear plastic containers and not very tasty. The radishes on the salads were extremely thick and over powering. Again, we didn't finish the salads. Our steaks arrived and every thing looked great. We had one ribeye, one special (Sirloin with 2 shrimp), one pepper steak and 2 petite pepper steaks. They were cooked to order but not very hot in temperature. It was Almost like they had been sitting. The baked potatoes were warm and not even hot enough to melt the butter. I asked everyone what they thought and our opinions were the same. The food was "Ok" but had a lot of room for improvement. The restaurant is dark and dated. It needs to be modernized. It was clean looking but hard to tell do to the lighting. A few people came in and it was clear they didn't know where to go or what to do. My salad had Chex cereal for crotons and more of it than salad. Had the steak sandwich sirloin meat on two pieces of a bun opened face. Sirloin was season but had a lot of gristle more than norm . Come on it's Valentine's Day took my wife and mother-in-law'. We were very excited to try Black Steer for the first time. It was our anniversary and the whole experience really didn't meet any of our expectations. Firstly, we made a reservation but upon arrival were told that due to us being early we would need to wait for our table - zero problem with waiting but I don't think making the customer feel like they are in the wrong for being early is the right way to address the fact that the table was not yet ready. When we got to our table it was sandwiched between an employee only service door and the bathrooms. We aren't picky people but we would have enjoyed a nicer table for our anniversary dinner. As far as the food goes, my husband got the black steer burger and he loved it! Burger + fries were delicious and we feel a great value/quality ratio. This is why we left 2 stars. I made the mistake of ordering the trout almandine - it was totally over cooked, dry and not really enjoyable. The salad was also disappointing, it looked like it could have been from a pre-made bag from the grocery store. Lastly, my plate came out with food on the bottom. I was assured this was just a matter of setting the plate down somewhere and I know there were no malicious intentions but this was our first time eating out since the pandemic began and it not only was a little stomach turning but certainly doesn't make me feel comfortable eating out. Um no, just no. Atmosphere aside (actually quaint and cozy), the food is kinda bad. Salad was circa 1970's with cereal on top (Chex = croutons). Sides were overcooked and no flavor other than grease. As a relative newcomer to Colorado, I'd been warned about the tendency of steakhouses in CO to overcook steaks. I believed that to be a very broad indictment of a major sector of the state economy, so I did not give it much credence. As it turned out, I should have taken that warning to heart. When my family and I celebrated my recent birthday, I ordered a medium rare steak, which was overdone. Others in our party experienced the same with their steaks. Other reviewers have complained about overdone meat, so you'd think that a some point, remedial action would be taken in the kitchen. But management seems oblivious to the obvious. This was our second time at Black Steer since moving to Loveland. I love to support local restaurants but unfortunately I won't be back. Service started out fine and went down quick. We ordered the potato skins for an appetizer and waited a very long time. Our server finally comes with a plate of 4 potato skins and says they owe us two more. Twenty minutes later the two come. We waited a very long time for our entrees. Server was not attentive and never came back to see if we wanted any refills on water or more drinks. When the entrees finally came, two of us had ordered baked potatoes as our side. The potato turned out to be a very small red potato wrapped in foil. The manager says, "this is how we have been getting the potatoes". Didn't offer another substitute. The server brings my vegetables on a separate plate and they were completely overcooked and mushy. The pepper steak was so tough, and tasted nothing like the first time we were here. I never like to complain when dining out but this was a very disappointing dinner. Food was subpar. Don't waste your money at this restaurant. There are many other restaurants in downtown Loveland with much better food and service. I was being nice for giving two stars. read more

We decided to give the Black Steer a try this week after being rather hesitant based on reviews and their "Voted Best Steak" signs which screams cheesy ploy. That's being said we gave it a go and lived to tell the tail but were regrettably confirmed with our suspicions. The place has a retro feel which could be considered charming but seems dated. The food was underwhelming at best and reminded us of a buffet offering. Chex mix on a salad was odd but in sure it's a throw back they have had for many years. My steak was the best item but was not cooked as requested, asked for medium rare and received medium well, which for a steak joint shows the quality of their work. The mashed potatoes were, at my guess, from a powder without any sign flavor and the brown gravy was upsettingly bad, most certainly from a can. Watermelon sliced just seemed odd and would have perhaps benefited from some light grilling at least. Even the platter my entree arrived on reminded me something my grandmother was served on at her retirement home. I think they survive on recurring customers which generally are of an older generation. For the price paid we felt really cheated by the quality. We will not return. read more

We went here for our anniversary dinner. We were looking forward to enjoying a wonderful meal. I ordered the fillet mignon with lobster tail. My husband ordered the pepper steak, with shrimp. The salad came out topped with Rice Chex cereal instead of croutons. There was not one tomato, a very small slice of cucumber, and wilted lettuce. A lot of good memories here. I used to come here with my grandparents. For my grandpa's birthday one year, I ordered the spaghetti. It had just the right amount of "spice" to it. The bar in the back is what is technically called the Rear of the Steer and there were a bunch of old characters giving the bartender a hard time. Believe me, she was dishing it out more than she was taking it. The restaurant was packed with big groups of friendly locals. Families, kids, dates. Quite a mix of nice folks. Now for the food. My jaw almost dropped on the table when I saw the chex mix on the salad. Hysterical, but really quite a tasty substitute for croutons. My steak was delicious and I had a glass of wine to wash it down. We're not talking fine dining here. We're talking good eatin'. This place is old school: no frills, good folks and good food. Rear of the Steer is the bar located in the back and the Black Steer is the restaurant in the front. However, I consider them one unified place and if memory serves there isn't a wall separating the two... This is a classic! Loveland establishment and a carnivore's dream. Definitely worth a stop or two. For thirty years (or more? it has been around forever) this place has been serving great steak, fantastic burgers, and killer drinks all at decent prices. My first visit was my last and a waste of a birthday dinner. Think: country, down home and yall come back you hear. 1st my salad had chex in it instead of crutons because the older client el that visits here can't get their dentures to penetrate them, the dishwasher must have robbed my grandmother's house because the dishes were straight out of her kitchen and the 70's with the tacky carpeted wall (I wish I was lying)! Except for the the sterile stainless still dish the 19 year old waitress brought over from the pick up window, where an equally young sweaty high schooler was cooking my dinner, no that dish came from a Quincy's. You know the place your parents took you when you were 8 and they were broke. I stand only 5'10 and hit my head twice on the low hanging ceiling light above our table! We should have turned back when we saw the logo! It was clear from the moment we walked in that this restaurant only survives because they have a following loyal to the staff. Everyone that walked in around us under 50 y/o was greeted by name. The decor is dated and on the wrong side of creepy. The paintings, of which there are dozens, capture some of life's more perplexing moments in stark artistic talent more befitting a museum than a setting to enjoy someone's company or a special occasion. The menu is small, which would in indicate they they're good at what they do, decor aside. I was told this is a steak house, but my steak was undercooked. I asked for medium rare; I got rare. Not a steak house. I asked for a dinner salad with croutons and I got "gluten free Chex mix." That's actually what the waitress said, as if she hadn't just brought bread with the salad. If this matters to you: they serve Pepsi, not Coke. Why watermelon? I didn't ask for it, it wasn't mentioned on the menu, and it's January. Our waitress was quite kind and personable. She was professional and apologetic for the poorly cooked steak. The only thing that gets this establishment more than one star was our waitress, Alex, running out of the restaurant with my dates phone. He had left it on the table, and she tore through the patchy ice in the parking lot to get it back to us before we drove away. The gravy on the kabob was like a premix generic brown gravy with whole mushroom buttons... Making the mushrooms the best part of the dish, over the steak. Long and short, the staff are great! My husband and I have spent far too much of our summer driving back and forth to CSU with our extremely sick kitty, so we arrived at the Black Steer late in the evening, tired, hungry, and grumpy. We enjoyed the somewhat dated, kitschy atmosphere and found the service polite and friendly. The waitresses seemed to read our energy very well, smiled a lot, and mostly left us alone to silently stare into space. The booth was very comfortable. The salad was better than expected, it had some real veggies in it and the chex were a surprisingly good addition. We also gobbled down some fried pickles, which were among the best fried pickles I've had! For meat, we split the ribeye. The steak was thick, juicy, and flavorful. They cooked it exactly the way I think medium rare steaks should be cooked, and didn't over-season it. My husband added a little salt, I thought it was perfect as-was. It was a steak my great-grandfather, logger, dairy farmer, and red meat addict, would have loved! All in all, we enjoyed our meal and would definitely go back, especially if we lived closer! read more

We really don't understand what all the fuss is about. Their "signature" food items are nothing to write home about. We went there with a group of 6 people to celebrate birthdays. The service was delayed. The food cheaply made. I ordered a rubbery chicken fried chicken, my husband had their very tough "signature steak." And insult to injury we were celebrating three birthdays, paying a bill for SIX people's meals and liquor and we were told we could only be given one free birthday dessert all three birthday people would have to share. I don't mind the fact that this is a dive. We went there for lunch and 90% of the clustomers were old and wierd looking. I had the steak standwich. I have never seen anything like this before. A small cibata roll was laid open and buttered (and nothing else) and a 4-6 ounce 3/4 inch thick sirloin strip steak lay across the bun. That was all there was with the fries and watermelon slices. They are supposed to be famous for this sandwixch. So I slicec the steak lengthwise into thirds and placed to slices on the bun. I ate it and it was good tasting but not what I was expecting. A friend and I went to Black Steer for lunch on a Tuesday. We arrived at 11:30 am. We were the first. Chose the table ourselves, which I like. It began to get more diners after we ordered. My friend got Pepper Ka Bob medium rare with rice and ice water. I got the Lunch Ka Bob with mushroom gravy, medium, and sweet potato fries extra, and side salad extra. Unsweetened iced tea was raspberry which they told me before I ordered it. It was very good. The skewers had 6 oz of very nicely cooked chunks of beef, skewer removed, which were tender and flavorful and no fat or sinew to deal with. My mushroom gravy was rich dark brown and although I didn't see any mushrooms I didn't really mind as it was very flavorful also. Melt in your mouth sweet potato fries. Nothing needed any salt. Perfect. Priced right. I would go again and take more friends. read more
