Larry at BVMD is awesome! He has everything you could want or need, there in his shop, and has one of the best attitudes I've seen in a business owner in a very long time. I've been thinking about getting into detecting for about a month and did a lot of research prior to calling Larry. I always try to do that when making a large purchase of something I'm not familiar with, so that I don't get taken advantage of during the purchase. I can tell you that, in this case, I really didn't need to. Larry is super knowledgeable and didn't try to BS or upsell me. In fact he actually helped me see that, as I'm apt to do, I really didn't need as much as I thought I did. Sure, he would have let me walk out of there with anything I wanted, but he took the time to explain the differences between several units I was looking at, and showed me why I'd be just fine with what I purchased, which saved me a couple hundred dollars. We had great conversation, told a couple stories, and when I walked away, I felt really good about the entire experiance. That's just it in a netshell...Big Valley Metal Detectors, and Larry especially, treats his customers not as dollar signs, but as friends. I'd purchase from Larry anytime I need something for my new hobby. Thanks a million Larry, see you next time. Rich (Warren B's Friend, lol)

I'll preface this by saying that it seems I've had particularly bad luck here, and my friends have…read morebeen treated well by the same store. It's also the only game in town for gold panning supplies, and they evidently carry everything from a $7 gold pan to a $5k enormous box-thing that we learned about in 5th grade. The Gold Mine lists its hours as 9-6, Mon-Sat. I work hella far away and don't get off until 5, and with people crashing on my commute like assholes* all the time its anybody's guess how long it will actually take me to get there. On my first venture, I rolled up at 5:50, having been waylaid by a stalled volvo for a while. Lo and behold, the store is already closed, lights off, no signs of life. What the hell man? Forward about a month to me finally forgiving them for the undue traffic I sat in and trying again. This time I called ahead, and it went like this: [Me]: Hi, how late will you be open today? [Guy]: Well, the sign on the door says till 6, but I usually take off around 5:50. ((Brain)): Yeah, I know. Maybe you should change the sign. Or, you know, suck it up and be open when you say you will. [Me]: Alright, well I'm on my way from Davis right now, I'm actually on the road already. [Guy]: Well, I guess I could be nice and stay until 6:00 today, but after 8 hours of this, you know, I want to go. I've got stuff to do. ((Brain)): Right, working 8 hours is the pits, isn't it? Thanks for the favor bud. [Me]: Alright, thanks, I'll be by in a bit. More traffic problems and a wrong turn and I end up walking in the door at 5:55. For those of you keeping score at home, we're 5 minutes past when he'd like to stay till and 5 minutes before he said he would/when the store *actually* closes. [Guy]: Are you the one who called earlier? 'Cause we're technically closed now. ((Brain)): OK, we just effing talked about this! Calm! Calm! Don't flip out! You need gold pans! [Me]: I just need 2 gold pans, I'll be out of here super quick. [Guy]: I already closed the register. You going to be cash or charge? ((Brain)): Why did you close the register? Didn't we just talk about this? AND you acknowledged it right when I walked in? AAAAAARRRR [Me]: What's easier? Charge? I can do that. [Guy]: Alright, I'll let my boss deal with it tomorrow. And while the credit machine is going, I find out that the stuff he has to do consists of going to the store and then starting dinner. Not exactly running off to his daughter's play, is it? Blah blah blah, rant about keeping a small industry alive by encouraging the younger demographic, etc. Anyway, I'm a bit embittered. 3 Stars still to be fair though, since I've never had a chance to really experience the store in full and the friends have had positive encounters there. Just don't show up after, say, 5:30. *apologies to those assholes who have sustained serious injuries. You're off the hook with me. sort of.

Summery: THEY WILL NOT BE TRANSPARENT WITH YOU. They made me wait over 3 months for my custom ring,…read moretelling me since the pickup date to come back every other week afterwards and giving me an excuse to why it wasn't ready. When I finally got it was a rush job, the wrong size, wrong setting, crooked and when they finally fixed it weeks later, they tried to scam me with 10kt gold ring when I paid for a 14kt gold ring. Looking at some the reviews on YELP, I feel some other people have experienced similar things. Management, if you're reading this hit me up. Long version: Bought a new setting for my engagement ring and they said it would take 2-3 weeks. Came in at the designated pickup date and they said it'd be another 2 weeks. Came back again another two weeks later and they said its been a while and they put away in storage and to wait another week while they ship it back to the store. I came back again they said it was locked in their jeweler's box and cant open it, so I had to come back again. AFTER 3 months since I've ordered, I called ahead and they said it was done, went to go finally pick up the ring and had to wait 45 minutes for it to be "polished", and when I got it, it was the wrong size (the whole reason why we upgraded our ring in the first place), it was the wrong setting, it wasn't centered, overall a rush job, it wasn't even polished which makes me believed they literally just slapped my diamond onto the ring within the hour. Was told it would take another week to get it done, and said they would send me pictures and keep me updated this time. They didn't follow up or keep me updated until I called them. I come back pick up the ring, and it looks significantly better before, but I check the ring's stamp and it said 10KT when I paid for a 14KT gold ring. Came back the next day and they didn't make a big deal about it and said the price difference wasn't that much. But its more about the principle of lying and attempting to pass off a cheaper product for something else I paid for. They then said all management can offer me is $100 and that's including all the inconveniences they caused me (which I doubt they told management that part), which isn't enough but I took anyways because having them take the ring back and then traveling back and forth another 4-6 times over the course of 2-3 months to fix it just isn't worth my time.
