Didn't go into this place with super high expectations, despite hearing it hyped up by friends - at this point, I don't really expect any aggressively bougie place getting a buzz on social media up here in WA to be as good as people say it is, let alone a taco bar less than 20 miles away from the Canadian border. It's just food that looks better than it tastes. Nothing tasted *bad*, but it's frustrating - making good tacos at home isn't that hard, why is they always so bland when you go out and pay a premium? My friends were really hyping up the corn for some reason - I thought it was just ok. I mean, it's roasted corn, how bad could it be? At least at $4-5 a taco it could be a lot worse, price-wise. I just wasn't impressed. I'd rather just make drinks and tacos at home, and that might have more to do with the kind of person I am than anything - if you go for the inside seating and are there more for the vibe than a filling dinner, you may have a wildly different experience. COVID-19 outdoor dining experience: There's seating indoors and outdoors! You have to be 21+ to be seated regardless. The street was closed off and they had a cute little patio set up out front. We sat at a table outside and they had these cute little fire machines for warmth. There were QR codes to scan to see the menu and there was hand sanitizer on the table as well. They have a takeout window in the alley. We went around noon on a Sunday and it didn't have a wait. This was our first time dining here and I didn't know it was a Mexican restaurant, but everything sounded delicious! The waitress was very friendly and told us the portions were pretty big, so we decided to share the chilaquiles. They were delicious!! Everything was reasonably priced, and I wish I lived close enough to come here again soon! read more

While driving to Canada I was having a spirited chat about how Mexican food in general sucks in Seattle. Someone mentioned Black Sheep in Bellingham on our way and how it was really good. I was skeptical but was happy to give it a try. First thing about this place is the decor and ambiance is really nice. It's got a really nice covered outdoor area with fire heat warmers, though we were too weak to stay out in the cold. Inside is exposed brick and really nice industrial decor. I just really liked the whole vibe of the place. The people working here seem to fit the style too. It just felt kinda trendy and laid back without being annoying about it. Maybe that's just what they want me to believe. Our host was friendly and it was no problem getting a table. It was at this point that I realized that this place is more of a bar with food than a restaurant with drinks. Most of the menu is drinks. Nothing wrong with that, I just didn't do my research ahead of time. That being said it was Happy Hour when we got there. That applies to drinks only, but getting a $3 lager was really awesome. My tablemates got their own cocktails. Didn't try them but they both got seconds so I assume they were good. Food wise, I was really hungry and I was worried the tacos wouldn't fill me. However, there's no straightforward "burrito" option on their menu, just a chimichanga. So I got that. For those who haven't had a chimichanga before, it's a fried burrito. It had a lot of toppings and sauce on it so it's more of a fork and knife affair. That said, the chicken chimichanga was good and filling. Throwing it back to the first thing I mentioned in this review, I wouldn't call this authentic Mexican food, but the ingredients were fresh and thoughtful. I really enjoyed it and pretty much ate it all in one go. Better than most stuff I've had in Seattle, for sure. Service was good with the hosts checking on our table here and there. Friendly and trendy vibes like I mentioned. This is definitely a superb date spot. We came back here again on our way back down because we just liked it that much. This time, we got sat on the upstairs section which lets you see down into the whole bar including the kitchen. It was great people watching and entertaining for me to just zone out and watch the transition from evening to night after a weekend of getting my ass kicked on Canadian ski mountains. However, I will say the chimichanga of the day was lamb which I didn't enjoy as much as the chicken one. Also like I said, this is more a bar + restaurant than restaurant + bar, so you have to order chips and salsa on the side. We did the first time and they were good. This is a good place! The first words out of the bartenders mouth when we sat down to order was "have you been briefed on the tacos that we are out of tonight?". When you market your business as "A bar with tacos" and your entire menu is seven tacos, you'd better not be out of any of them. I wasn't going to make a comment here until I saw the waitress filling a chip container from a bag of Juanita's tortilla chips. The menu clearly says "house made chips". Outside seating is nice in the summer the restaurant itself was a bit stuffy. Loved the tacos and all the flavor dynamics. The pork belly taco was my favorite, the carne asada was perfect, I tried the fried chicken taco probably won't be having that one again I'm just a sucker for fried chicken. Also the carne asada nachos were delicious and it's strongly recommended you add guac for 4 bucks you get a huge scoop of some fresh house made stuff. Happy hour drinks are strong too so can't go wrong with this spot. You can also order pizza from next door and they will send your pie to you at your table if you're not feeling the taco vibe party. read more

Met some friends for dinner down here in small town Bellingham. An older historic & quaint town, has surprised me yet again via - Black Sheep - A Bar with Tacos! Couldn't find it easily at first as there's no sign outside - might have been blown away in a wind storm, I presume!? One walks into a cool chilled out atmosphere & once you sit down - all will be well - you just get that feeling! Our waitress was a delight & friendly - excellent recommendations & service! There's something appealing to the eye about the simplicity, yet colourful decor of this joint! We started with a most amazing nachos I've had in awhile - the Queso Nachos were the bomb! Added Guac & it was killer rocking in our mouths! The cheese (made in-house) on these nachos - heavenly! We then moved onto tacos - Chicken Tinga, Rockfish, Lamb & Carne Asada (steak). Can you say - Holy Cow - loud enough!?! Simple yet brilliant tacos indeed - fresh tasting & supreme! Ended off with Churros for dessert with chocolate, lemon & salted caramel sauces. Not impressed to sit outside since I'm from Denver and didn't know I needed my COVID vaccine card to dine here. Not going to ding them for following protocol and since I'm fro Denver, it wasn't really that cold outside. I planned to order a couple of thing but once they brought me the chicken verde soup, it was all I needed! I don't do dairy so mine was sans creama and cotija bit it was delicious, I almost felt like I was eating a bowl of pho, which I never get from Mexico soups, actually I usually can't even order them (again, no diary) because it's usually heavily cream based (ie tortilla soup) this was hearty, delicious and to be honest as much as I wanted to there was no way I could finish the generous portion of soup. Their nachos are really good. Piled high, smothered in a beer queso, sweet jalepenos, guac and beans. A somewhat unique take on nachos compared to traditional Mexican restaurants. For 3-5 person groups, I'd recommend sharing a tacos tray, where you can build you own tacos and share. Just a bit more affordable than the individual options (which can feel a lil expensive for tacos). The service is good. They're often pretty busy, but food comes out quick. I'm a fan of the ambiance. It has a nice open atmosphere and there's outdoor seating as well. Also some more secluded seating upstairs. read more

I am sure the cocktails are the main focus. The brunch is good but I've had better. I think the Yelp scale is a little skewed with the Black Sheep. I went here on Yelps recommendation and was underwhelmed by it. The breakfast burrito was pretty good. The tacos are fine but the portions are small. The reality is the food is good but very forgettable. If you don't want a drink skip this place. The cocktails are good but I think the bartender has too high of an opinion about themselves. Their drinks are really basic with marketing based names. The Dude-A-Rita is just a margarita and tastes basic. Why give it a stupid name? The Bloody Mary at brunch is just a normal Blood Mary so I'm not sure why the menu needs to call out "house Bloody Mary mix" as if it's some sort of award winning, super secret recipe. read more

Very fun bar and restaurant. It has nice outdoor seating as well as a huge bar and indoor seating. The tacos are simple and delicious. They use high quality ingredients. Everything is a-la Carte, so you can have a variety of. Chicken, fish, carne asada, etc. I recommend the salsa trio with chips too. I have never in my life left an online restaurant review, but felt compelled today. I just went into Black Sheep to order take-out. My 15 year old daughter was with me, and was not allowed inside because there is no metal bar between the bar and the tables. So basically, you cannot eat here with kids, which is so bizarre to me. I then tried to order a mocktail so that I could sit outside with my daughter and drink it while my tacos were made, and I wasn't allowed to do that either. Apparently you can't sit outside in the regular seating with a mocktail, which is also super bizarre. Finally, I tried to order the mocktail to go, and because they don't have the appropriate sized cups, I would've had to pay for four servings in 2 cups for two times as much money. That also doesn't make sense to me. They certainly don't make it easy to spend money in their restaurant!!! I'm thinking I won't be back. Just get a metal bar installed between the bar and the indoor seating people! They are missing out on a huge clientele, but I guess they don't care. read more

Checked this place out for the first time last week. The tacos were absolutely delicious. We also ordered a side of black beans... also yummy. Our waiter was super attentive and kept checking on us regularly. I ordered a cocktail and it was so good. Came in on a Saturday for lunch, the atmosphere was uplifting. Ordered guacamole and chips, and tacos. Sweet potato and cauliflower, chicken tinga and roasted veggie gyro. I ordered the chicken with a crispy shell. They have three kinds-of house made salsas. I liked them all but my favorite was the roasted veggie! This is a combination score - Me 4/5, SO 2/5. Off the top the elote was amazing. Order this. And the all day happy hour on Sunday is perfect. Some pluses, they do allow dogs outdoor, they have quite a bit of outdoor space and the customer service was friendly. With COVID masks and vaccines were required to sit indoors. The food and drinks, me and my SO, I don't think, have ever disagreed more about food and drinks. For drinks we ordered the happy hour Dude-a-rita, I thought it was great, just enough sweet and citrus. My SO wanted less sweet more citrus. For food. As stated above the Elote was spectacular. Would order this again. The tacos on the other hand... starting with the carnitas - I though this was great, juicy, texture not fantastic. SO says it tasted like canned tuna fish and the pineapple was underripe. The chorizos- so many condiments on this taco, you could barely taste the meat. At this point after a couple tacos we also started to realize the tortillas are so thick and chewy to the point where it was unpleasant. The asada - again too many condiments, the guacamole filled up the taco. Would have liked to meat to been more present. Unlikely to return for food but I'm a sucker for a decent marg. read more

These guys won't quit improving. It's like they up the flavor every few months. Staff are always helpful and friendly with a SMILE, and we could all use a bit more genuinely fulfilled staff members at our local eateries (go Black Sheep for taking care of your people). Their atmosphere is fun with some thoughtful decor and a cool, long bar as well as outdoor seating, even if it gets a little noisy inside when crowded. It's expensive, though going out to eat anywhere is pricey these days, no? Side note: This isn't your regular, grab n' go taco shop for $1.50- it's Bellingham's connoisseur/gourmet version of tacos. Favorites/Recommendations: Rock Fish taco- A fancy fish taco that actually tastes like a fish taco (this SoCal girl thanks you, Black Sheep). Carne Asada taco- Staple. Meaty goodness with fresh toppings to boot. Butternut squash- a little too wet sometimes, but I find this one unique and underrated Though I don't drink often, their beverage menu is pretty tasty and I'd recommend a 'Dude-a-rita' to go with their zesty foods. On a recent road trip to the US, boyfriend and I decided to stop in Bellingham for dinner on our way home. Thanks to Yelp, we found this little restaurant/pub in the downtown area. Free parking on weekends about a block and a half away. At first glance, the bar/restaurant is a lot deeper (and hence larger) than what you can see from the door, with a second story loft area. We managed to snag a seat upon our arrival: the place seemed quite busy for a Sunday night, always a good thing! The waitress told us Sunday was all day Happy Hour, which was a welcome bonus too. After a hard decision, we ordered nachos with guacamole to share, and I chose to try the Carnitas taco, and the Sweet Potato & Cauliflower taco. I think this is the first place I remember where there was twice as much toppings as there were chips! A welcome change from other places where there is a ton of chips, but toppings are light. I fell in love with the Carnitas taco, with my favourite combination of pork and pineapple. I wasn't as big of a fan of the Sweet Potato & Cauliflower, because the spiciness of the taco was above my tolerable level, and the waitress seemed genuinely concerned that I may not have enjoyed my food, but in all honesty, my fault for not reading the ingredients list carefully. Overall the place had a hip, bustling vibe that had great energy on a Sunday night. Service was great and tacos were delicious. Would love to come back again the next time I am in town! read more

First visit to this restaurant, came here with some family. It was a nice Monday evening and the restaurant was busy. We waited about 30 minutes for a table and got one of their outdoor tables with a heater/fire display. We all ordered dude-a-ritas. Still not sure why they are called that, maybe it's due to the simple glass they are served in? We all had different flavors but agreed that they were not the best 'ritas that we've ever had. I ordered the special for the day, a Carnitas salad. Others at the table ordered tacos and the special chimichanga of the day, also with Carnitas. My salad was excellent, a great assortment of toppings and interesting flavors and textures, including tortilla strips, avocado(that wasn't quite ripe), and a dressing that was very tasty, of garlic. Carnitas were a little dry, those with the chimichangas also agreed. On the whole, I agree with the positive reviews for this restaurant. It is hard to find a restaurant that cares deeply about food quality and customer service, and it's rare to find a restaurant that hits all the major points of a fantastic dining experience. We headed over to Bellingham for the art museum, and found this hole in the wall upscale casual restaurant within walking distance. We ordered the nachos with Pork Belly, guacamole, and crema, and shared the chorizo, pork belly, rock fish, and cauliflower tacos. The nachos are a mile high with a great distribution of all toppings, and a heaping pile of guacamole. The chips are the perfect thickness and crispness, not crumbling under the toppings and making it easy to scoop everything into one chip. The prk belly is so tender my eyes rolled into the back of my head. 10/10, must try. Kudos also for making REAL cilantro lime crema, and not just sour cream with a light squirt of lime. It makes a difference. The Salsa trio had flavors for everyone, offering a smokey mesquite, salsa verde, and tomato based salsa, none of which were too spicy. Best taco was the pork belly. It was a wrap with the fruit salsa to balance out the fattiness. Highly HIGHLY recommend. The tortillas are also house made, slightly thick with a slight char. Perfect. Super cool vibe and even cooler tacos! Each of their exceptional tacos has been so well thought out and developed, featuring the absolute best flavor combination for every one. I ordered the chicken tinga taco and the pork belly taco--the pork belly taco was next level, especially when you got a bite that included a slightly charred, slightly caramelized end piece of the pork. My dining mates enjoyed the vegetarian mushroom taco as well as the carne asada taco. Huge portion of guacamole and the black been dip was delicious as well. I wasn't as impressed with their margaritas, but my Paloma was exceptional. Black Sheep was recommended by almost everyone we met in Bellingham. Thus, I was a bit startled by the limited "Take Out" menu; basically , tacos, tacos, and tacos, with maybe a Chimichanga thrown in, Okay, maybe it's Covid minimalism. We strolled back to the hotel with rock fish tacos, steak tacos, chorizo tacos, and some chips. The tacos were good, the heat on the rock fish a bit much, choking the flavor of the rock fish. I liked my steak tacos. They were flavorful. What was all the hoopla about? Maybe I needed to dine in when there is no virus trampling through the restaurant world. These weren't tacos like you get in the Condesa or Roma neighborhoods of Ciudad de Mexico, but Black Sheep's were good. I bet they would taste better with a couple of shots of Mezcal. Came on a Friday night and it was pretty busy! We got added to the wait list around 6 and got sat around 630. We were able to enjoy a drink next door and they were flexible when we said we would be 5 or 10 min longer. Super friendly staff!! We sat at a picnic table outside with our pup and the table fire was surprisingly warm. We got a drink each, rockfish tacos, chopped salad and nachos add chicken. Rockfish tacos were awesome. So fresh and lots of good sauce. Chopped salad was refreshing with plenty of avocado and was a great item to share to get some greens. I did not love the nachos. It didn't have enough cheese but I also did not enjoy the cheese that was on it. It was this queso type cheese but wasn't very flavorful. Almost like a sour cream. I like a good melted shredded cheddar! Chicken was great though. We are glad to make this stop during our first night of our weekend trip! Great and comfortable experience. read more
