I walked by this place the other day and wanted to try it out, so I stopped by with the wifey and got a cup. I remember the wifey's drink.. it was the Kerouac hella smooth. I really liked it.. but my drink which I already forgot the name was this soda/coffee thingy - I usually get a cold brew when I go to spots because I like the chilly drinks but I had never had anything like it so I was like lets give it a try.. I really dug it. gotta say it was exactly up my alley. ill def be back for some more since its just down the street from me. They had a chill little patio - I would have loved to kick it for a bit but I had to go. Side note: they had a shit load of interesting tea's and coffee's. Very cute spot! I wanted matcha and didn't want to drive or make it myself today, but a walk sounded nice. So my partner and I walked to Black Sails since we had never been before. I ordered a matcha latte and was a bit disappointed (thus minus a star) cause it was very watered down by the ice and the milk overpowered the flavor of the matcha. Partially on me for going to a coffee shop for matcha I guess, but I also feel like if it's going to be on the menu they should at least try to make it as good as their espresso drinks. My partner got the Kerouac. I had a sip of it and it was really good! Very smooth, ice cold with no ice (cause it's shaken with ice), just the right amount of sweetness and topped with 3 coffee beans in a small cup. Only downside was that it was so small but that's because it's just 4 shots of espresso with some condensed milk and cream. But I'd definitely order it again! We also got a toasted plain croissant and although it was plain it was still very good! The outside was nice and crispy but not burnt and it was nice and warm. From where I was standing (in front of the register) I didn't notice they had a pastry menu sitting on top of the pastry box, the black drink menu blocked my view. Otherwise I probably would've ordered something else or more- I thought everything in the box was all they had. Overall experience was not bad. The inside is very small with 4 high chairs to sit at and there's a table outside to sit at as well. The workers seem to stay in the back room most the time (packing coffee I assume), which is nice for the fact that I didn't feel like they were listening in on my conversations as I sat inside. But troublesome to get service when needed. I think a girl came in to order but they didn't hear the door bell so she left. Maybe they can put a bell at the register or something for customers to ring in case they didn't hear the doorbell. Room for improvement but very cute spot with really good espresso! I'll definitely be back since it's walking distance & next time I think I'll have something off the seasonal menu. I'll probably give the matcha another try eventually if it's still on the menu cause I'd love to have a decent matcha place near home. read more

I was super excited to try Black Sails Coffee, it had been on my list to try and I was in Oak Park so I took the opportunity to stop in. There's street parking in the area, and if you're ok with a little walk I typically park on 35th street and then explore Oak Park. You'll see the pirate skull on the building and the inside has a moody pirate ship feel as well. However, the staff is super friendly and upbeat. They offer coffee, teas, and lemonades and their seasonal menu was full of fun options. I ended up ordering the Split Decision ($7.50) that's a banana cream mocha with banana cold foam. It was a treat, but not overly sweet, and had a nice coffee taste to balance out the banana and chocolate. Inside they have a few seats, and there was a small table out front as well. They were also selling coffee beans and stickers. I'd definitely stop back in to try more of the menu. read more

I tried their seasonal Toast N' Jam Latte. It was a pretty light drink, in terms of none of the flavors being overpowering. It really did remind me of having toast with some jam, so it's an aptly named drink. Definitely not overly sweet, which was a huge plus for me. Presentation was nice as well! Service was very nice and friendly/welcoming. There were four bar stools inside and one small table outside, but other than that I didn't see any seating. I'm not in the Oak Park area that often, but this is definitely a great coffee shop addition to Sac! read more

Came here on a whim! It was close to my school and I always passed by it so why not try it! I got the Kerouac (quad shot with sweetened condensed milk). SO GOOD, especially if you're a Vietnamese coffee lover like I am. I quite literally told myself it's a Viet coffee with less liquid lol (not a bad thing) This is a small shop, perfect for grabbing and heading on your way. Lots of new coffee shops popping up in the Sac area (hard for me to keep up honestly lol) but yooooo this one is quite special particularly with their seasonal drinks!! - Captain's Delight: first time trying Coca Cola with espresso and, damn, it works so well here lol. The espresso has a fruity flavor note to it with zero bitterness, and with the sweetened condensed milk and the vanilla cold foam the whole drink tastes like cream cherry soda pop that's strongly caffeinated lolol. It's sooo delicious!! Would get again. - The Banana Boat: gotta really like banana for this one. Banana flavor is in the forefront with a subtle herbal and chocolate kick from the black tea and cocoa powder, respectively. Uniquely funky in taste. One-and-done drink for me. Street parking but not too difficult to find parking in the neighborhood. This coffee place has solid coffee that's not too sweet. There is no indoor seating and only outdoor seating. The drink itself was pretty good, but the coffee does take a while to be ready. They had some assorted pastries but not many selections. It's quiet and peaceful inside and you can see the equipment where they roast their coffee which is pretty cool. read more

I dropped in around 4pm and asked the kind person working what they thought of one of the menu items. They gave their thoughts and said they preferred another drink, the Captain's Delight. This is what I had intended to try, but I didn't see it on the menu. It's cola, espresso, sweetened condensed milk, and vanilla cold foam. I rarely drink anything in my coffee, but this was great. I like the carbonation of the soda. Sort of had a slightly bitter root beer float vibe. Quite sweet, so plan accordingly. read more

I was walking my dog one afternoon in OP and I was looking for a quick caffeine fix, but Faria and Old Souls had "no dog" signs up (service dogs okay), so I gave up, but I kept walking until I stumbled upon Black Sails who had no objection to little Namu (+1 for being so dog friendly) This is a great addition to neighborhood. I had matcha latte that was solid. Great matcha flavor, was not sweet, and with great a great milk quality and ratio. I can only make assumptions, but I bet the rest of the menu is quality. This is a locally owned, industrially chic, high end coffee shop. I didn't appreciate a food menu (yet?), but because their business is coffee. I briefly spoke to Hayden who clearly was knowledgeable about coffee and had been doing this for some time. So, when you come here, you are getting treatment from apt and experienced barista. Price point is a pinch higher fyi, but that's just where the market is taking us, but I still recommend this join to the above average coffee lover. They seemed to have an esoteric assortment of beans including an anaerobic offering. Looking forward to coming back. read more

The staff were very friendly and they had a shop dog! I loved walking in and smelling their freshly roasted beans. Their drinks are fairly priced. I paid $12 for an iced lavender matcha latte and iced americano. The space was very clean and industrial looking, making it blend well with the roasting equipment. Excellent coffee! Stopped in with a friend during the afternoon for a coffee and chat. Both of our drinks were delicious. We were quickly greeted when we walked in. Service was kind. The ambiance of the building was pretty cool with the roasting set up being visible. Only down fall is no parking lot and not much indoor seating. So if you're planning to go and stay a while, you'll have to grab an outside table which can be warm depending on weather. read more

What a treasure that's landed in Oak Park. Black Sails offers some truly delicious and unique coffee. Service was quick and friendly, with Maple being the absolute best at her job. The space itself is small but beautiful, with some seating right up against the roaster. I can't wait to try out more of their menu, do not sleep on this coffee spot. read more

I value the quality of the green coffee, the skill of the coffee roasting professional, and the preparation of the brewed coffee, probably in that order. Black sails coffee is my choice for a delicious single origin pour over brew, which is what I usually drink. They are also excellent for espresso, which for me is usually an americano, or cortado/gibraltar. What makes them special? Their owner is an award winning coffee roaster and he is also their green coffee buyer. Selecting green coffee based on taste and having the skill to roast it well are critical skills. At black sails that is the same highly skilled individual. The people behind the bar know how to prepare an excellent pour over and how to pull excellent shots. These are what differentiate black sails from average good cafes. I'm always really happy with the product and enjoy treating myself to a delicious brew here often. read more

Black Sails has excellent coffee and you can get pour over too! Their espresso drinks are tasty as well. Everything is smooth and flavorful. The mocha was not super sweet and came out at a drinkable temp. Try a special if you go they have a Toast and Jam drink that is pretty original and really yummy. There's not much seating inside, just a very small bar space but there's a patio outside too. There's no shade, might be hot in summer. It was also a bit slow but maybe that's not normal, I think there were only 2 people working. I love the Oak Park neighborhood and the coffe so I will likely be back. read more

I was an enthusiastic patron of this location when it was operated by Naked, and I believe the owner of Black Sails used to be Naked's roaster at some point, which explains the current high quality beans and roast. It may also explain some changes outside the roast that haven't fared as well. Twice now Black Sails ground my coffee beans on the wrong setting. I asked for a coarse grind for a french press and both times I received a super fine grind that I could only use with espresso machine or moka pot. I wanted to dial in these issues with the Black Sails team and figure out the setting on their burr grinder so I can just ask for that instead of relying on their expertise (which obviously is lacking re grinding beans--they roast them great, grinding...not so much). I asked the barista if I could come around the counter to see what setting they have, and I was granted permission. While I was behind the counter a fellow from the back of house opened a glass door and rudely interrupted the conversation and work the barista and I were doing saying, "You can't be back there you have to go around to the other side now." I tried to explain that the barista said it was okay, that my coffee has been ground incorrectly and I'm trying to figure the right setting. He again interrupted me, shutting me down, "I don't care, you need to get around the counter, you can't be back here." Here I am, trying to stay a customer after several bad experiences, giving them the benefit of the doubt, just to be talked to by a staff member like a COP. Where's the humanity, the human connection to build community? I had that community with the previous establishment, and I was really hoping to have that with Black Sails--and I love pirate themes, but alas, it's not meant for me. Long story short: Their roast is great, coffee is just fine. Their customer service is hit or miss, the owner is nice, but some staff are not. Beware of buying coffee beans if you need them to grind them, they're not good at that and are generally unhelpful in working with you to find the right grind. Some things that I loved when the spot was owned by Naked that are gone now (and I hope Black Sails brings back): -You could grind your own coffee (this let's you learn what particular grind works with your brew system). I would go back to Black Sails if they put the burr grinder back out for customers. -Coffee was sold in 1 pound PAPER bags, not 12 ounce plastic bags at slightly higher prices like they're doing now. We don't need the plastic coffee bag gimmick, if your'e drinking your coffee slow enough to need an impermeable bag your'e drinking coffee wrong--just put it in the freezer or a glass jar. Also, you could have really cool stamps of the Kraken to stamp paper bags--that's more pirate-like anyways, and probably cheaper. -There was a really cool life size skeleton in the old place, wearing a Hawaiian shirt and a dazzling necklace, it's gone now, despite the coffee house theme being pirates? The skeleton is in the back I'm told... I reached out to Black Sails about this issue through their website contact page, but they have yet to parley. read more
