That's on the expensive side for a latte, so I went in with pretty high expectations. Everything about the experience was quick and efficient. The line moved fast, my drink came out quickly, and I was in and out with no issues. The shop itself seemed like a great place to sit down and get some work done or catch up with a friend. Since it was such a nice day, I decided to sit outside. My first sip immediately stood out because of the texture. It was probably the smoothest coffee I've ever had; silky, creamy, and almost pillowy on the tongue. Unfortunately, that's where most of my praise ends. The coffee itself tasted fine, but nothing about the flavor stood out, especially considering the price. I ordered a vanilla latte, but I couldn't taste any vanilla at all and got virtually no sweetness from the drink. Overall, it's not bad coffee by any means, and the texture was genuinely impressive. But for nearly $9, I expected a lot more flavor. I don't regret trying it, but I wouldn't come back at that price point.

I asked if we could meet over the weekend for coffee as we do several times per year, he answered; "of course, but find us a place with an outdoor courtyard". That is how he and his nephew Nicholas would spend each morning - drinking coffee and tea outside in a beautiful courtyard, when my buddy visited his family each year. Of course, I knew we had to meet at Cafe Equinox in Shawnee. And so, we did meet there today. My buddy with a single origin cup of drip and me with an iced "Golden Hour" off of their Fall Seasonal menu - honey, turmeric, sea salt with espresso and milk - fantastic. We took our drinks to the cafe section of the greenhouse, found a quiet table amongst the foliage and flowering plants and he shared beautiful stories of his beloved "Niquito". From gritty daily life challenges of being a teen in current day rural Mexico to the magical surrealism of events that has impacted my friend since the tragic news broke. Thank you, Cafe Equinox / Thou Mayest and Family Tree Nursery for an idyllic spot to share stories and tears amongst your perfectly curated greenhouse cafe. Then, you're welcome to find a seat at any of the open seating options which are always nice and clean. After that, they'll either call your number or they'll come find you in the dining area and bring you your order! It was a super nice and convenient process and I enjoyed sitting down in the open area and using their free wifi to browse on my laptop and work on some work related projects. In addition, the Taiwan Toast was super delicious and exactly the kind of sweet treat I needed that day to help me focus on my work. Would definitely recommend this place and location specifically if you're looking for a nice treat and good place to hangout.

Some back story: I used to live in this neighborhood and before I lived here my husband (then boyfriend) lived here so I've spent some solid time in Old Overland Park. Before the Parisi opened in 2020 Homers was the only coffee option in this area so I'd ended up here for meetings, or to grab a cup to go many times. I'd say before this week I had pegged Homers as more of a three star spot. It was very hit or miss, and the vibes weren't hitting it for me. Just my personal preference. Speed up to Wednesday when Parisi was packed and I had a meeting on the calendar. My colleague suggested we move over to Homers since there were no tables at Parisi and I had a wonderful time here this week. My cold brew was on par, if not better than local competitors, the barista super friendly, and the space felt homey in a good way. I'll need a few more great visits to move up into 5 star territory but they are on the right path and I love that this return visit totally changed my mind about this local spot.

As I venture further into consulting and meet with more people, I'm less interested in simply asking, "Is this a good coffee shop?" and more interested in, "Who is this place good for?" I came to Prairie specifically looking for somewhere to collaborate. Good tables, enough room to spread out papers, sit across from someone, compare laptops and actually have a conversation without feeling like you're taking over the entire coffee shop. Urban Prairie absolutely fits that bill. What I wasn't expecting was how much more there was to it. There's a game store attached, which was such a cool surprise, plus another room with larger tables that would be even better for brainstorming or working with a small group. Then right in the middle you still get that classic cozy coffee shop atmosphere people actually want. Some people need a quiet corner and headphones. Some need a place to catch up with a friend. Some of us show up with two laptops, papers everywhere and ideas to work through. Urban Prairie gives you options for all three. I'm going to keep trying different coffee shops around KC with that mindset because sometimes the best review isn't whether a place is "good." It's whether it's the right place for what you need that day.
