My husband brought me here before we went to see a movie and told me it was his favorite childhood sushi spot in the area. We ordered several sushi rolls and chicken katsu to share. Everything was fresh and very good! The chicken katsu was perfectly crispy and the curry accompanied it well. The main thing I have to thank Black Pine for is their incredible service! We came in on an evening when they were busy ahead of making it to a movie, and they were awesome in getting our orders made and served in such great timing. Delicious!!!! Absolutely hands down the most authentic Japanese food I've gotten my hands on in years!! I got the pork katsu curry, which comes with miso soup, and my fiance got the fresh roll and a hand roll! Great choices for everyone, even people who don't like sushi. I hate I did not take pictures before eating. Visual presentation is just as important when you order sushi. Anyway, my first visit had to be a to-go and service was great. Ran in and I described to young woman what I wanted, crunchy, spicy roll with shrimp jalapeño and spicy sauce. The second roll I requested spicy with no rice, rolled in cucumber, an avocado and shrimp. The no rice roll wasn't quite what I envisioned and only five pieces, but rolls were tasty and pleasing to the eye. Also ordered veggie udon noodles with shrimp... loved this dish! At 8:30 I got a voicemail (phone never rang) that my order had been cancelled because they didn't have any fish or rice left. I go in and was told that there's nothing they could do, except people that were on the waitlist for a table got seated while I was there. Was then told that they cancelled all pick up orders at 7pm...nobody could give me anything but excuses. It took me losing my temper for them to reluctantly offer me a $50 gift card. I should note, the staff at the front desk are not to blame. They were embarrassed that this happened and said that the communication between the chefs and them was not good at all. read more

First time trying this place, now it comes off from the outside like your unsure if you should eat here but, first of all the waitress by the name of Samara was very nice very helpful and was quick she was so nice and patient with our question's and all she recommends was delicious. I usually go to Sushi Q that is just down the street. However, I decided to give this place a try. I love to try new things. However, trying new things doesn't alway pan out like we hope it would. I was not impressed with the quality of sushi nor the service. The sushi wasn't to the same quality that I am used to getting at other restaurants in the area. The inside is pretty small. And there was a long wait time. Overall, I wouldn't avoid this spot at all costs however, I also would not go there on my own choosing. There are so many other better options in the area that offer superior service and food quality. However, if you're not that familiar with sushi you won't really notice a difference in quality. First time ordering here and got carry out! Seems like this sushi spot does get very busy (usually a good sign). I ordered on a Friday evening and the wait was over an hour for food, so plan accordingly on the weekend if ordering take-out here. I ordered 3 rolls: Obama, Sakura, and a basic salmon+avocado. They do have sake available to buy as well but were unfortunately sold out of all when I placed my order. The rolls themselves were pretty decent - not blown away by any means but satisfied my craving for sushi. Need to give them another shot for dine-in as they have a pretty large dine-in restaurant and let's be honest...cooked rolls are best ate immediately out of the kitchen and not the best when you have to drive it home first to eat. :) read more

And didn't expect another one not far away from Allen Park. This place is popular and of scale. Busy business and foodies enjoying the food. I was told to come here by someone I trust...and I wonder if he's really aware of the context of what's happening here. My friend said he knew one of the people that works here as one of the chefs (and possibly an owner, but I don't know if that's true or not), and when I inquired about him, no one knew who he was, at all. It was quite awkward. You know what's even more awkward? Deciding to stay, sitting down at the sushi bar, and being acknowledged or served by *no one*. None of the sushi chefs engaged me (even just to make conversation!). No menus, beverages, or food were offered by any employee, whether sushi chef standing two feet in front of me, or any server, including the one I directly asked, "Can I see a menu?" To which I was told, "One sec...", and then never received one. It's odd when a hospitality joint offers no kind of hospitality whatsoever. It's like they're allergic to money or something. I was hungry, and it's not as though the place was jammed to the gills. Were there other diners? Certainly. Was it anything even close to resembling a full house? Not at all. In fact, I was the only person dining at the sushi bar, among probably half a dozen settings. IF YOU DON'T WANT PEOPLE TO DINE AT THE SUSHI BAR, CORDON IT OFF WITH TAPE OR CHAIRS OR SOMETHING, AND DON'T PLACE PLACEMATS, UTENSILS, ETC. AT THE SEATS!!! In fact, just don't have chairs at the sushi bar at all, right? You're sending a severely mixed message, here, if that's what you're trying to convey. What's the food like? Honestly, who knows?!?!!??? More importantly: who *CARES*?!?!?!?? If you don't want to serve me, well, buckaroo: you get your wish. I'll walk out and never return, my money fully ensconced in my pocket for all eternity. I'd rather *burn* my money than give it to someone here. It's honestly hard to miss the mark this badly. At Black Pine Tree in Southgate, they don't even know that the mark *exists*. There aren't many, but herein lies a place that I'll actively root against for the rest of my days. We came here on a very busy night and it was still worth the wait! Once we were seated the wait staff was quick and attentive. The food took a little while to arrive but that makes sense because sushi doesn't seem like fast food. The curry rice came out first. It was warm and filling on the rainy evening. Husband got the sashimi sampler and enjoyed every bite. The fried crab stick appetizer is delicious too! I gotta give it up to these guys. I think this restaurant is the benchmark for all sushi restaurants in the Downriver area. I know everybody has their own sushi spots, but I'm not a basic rolls type of guy. Even though I do enjoy it from time to time. I come here for quality nigiri sushi. I do love the uni here. I do it all the time whenever it's available. They only have shipments during certain days of the week. I love this place because of their awesome consistent service. Never have I ever had a bad experience coming here. Everything is gucci whenever I dine here. Unlike other sushu restaurants, they know how to service that never falls apart. Myself and my two sisters went to the Black Pine Tree sushi bar in Southgate because we heard it was voted one of the best restaurants in the downriver area. I am honestly confused as to how they got that title as the food and service of our experience was below the lowest of low. To begin: - we had to wait 30 minutes, which wasn't that bad since the restaurant was a bit busy. It's what followed this that made our experience bad. - I ordered the Salmon Nigiri, spicy salmon and California rolls. All which I thought were pretty tasty. My sister ordered just the California roll and my other sister ordered the California, spicy California, and avocado roll. Before placing our order, my sister asked the waitress what the difference was between the angry and spicy California. The waitress responded and my sister placed an order for the spicy California rolls. Important piece of information *the waitress repeated our order back to us and everything was great! - we ordered at 633 pm, the food didn't come out until 720 pm. Every other table got their food (huge helpings) and then their checks before us. The waitress messed up the order coming out with the food and forgot to even put ours in. Hence why it took so long. - when the food came out we were confused by my sisters plate as each roll has 6 pieces. She ordered 3 different kinds of sushi and her plate had 4. It looked exactly the same - the waitress said that the chef got it wrong and that one was the angry rolls and the other set was the spicy rolls. We didn't realize until me and my other sister finished ours - the sister with the messed up order didn't eat hers. - when the bill came, the waitress scammed my sister into two separate rolls that she didn't order. It's the fact that she read the orders off of her notes before sending it to the back and still had the audacity to charge us for what we didn't order. - once she fixed the bill, told me and my other sister to enjoy our night and told the sister with the messed up food "here you go" with attitude and kinda tossed the checkbook at her. - on the worst side of things besides the unprofessional attitude from the service workers - the food gave all of us food poisoning!!! - there's a better sushi place in Troy called the revolving sushi bar and is amazing and such a fun experience. We were lucky enough to snag a Saturday evening reservation to dine-in at Black Pine Tree, tonight. I had called ahead and made a 7:15pm reservation, and when we arrived a few minutes early, we were immediately seated by a friendly hostess. I'll start this review by saying the only thing that eclipsed our energetic, awesome waitress was the food, itself. My wife and I are vegan and find it hard to get a great, healthy plant-based meal Downriver. Black Pine Tree was exactly what we were looking for. We started with the Vegetable Tempura, fried tofu, and Potato Croquettes appetizers. All 3 were 5-star appetizers that were delicious and large enough to share. The vegetable tempura had fresh zucchini, sweet potato, broccoli, and huge onion rings all coated with the lightest, crispiest tempura. (which I found out is also vegan). The teriyaki sauce for dipping was also perfectly thin and sweet. The potato croquettes were steaming hot and filled with a garlicky mashed potato mix, hand-formed with peas and small bits of carrots. The panko-type breading was perfectly crispy and the sauces drizzled around it were delicious. If you've never tried fried tofu, this is the place to try it! Perfectly crispy and slightly firm, with black and green seaweed salad on top. I almost forgot to mention that we each ordered a 3-glass sake flight with peach, coconut cream, and melon sake. They were all delicious and we tempered the sake with a 22oz bomber of Kirin Japanese lager. We finished by sharing a huge bowl of their mushroom ramen that had oyster mushrooms tempura and two other types of exotic mushrooms in the noodles and broth. This was truly an epic dinner experience, and the owner even stopped by the table to make sure we enjoyed everything. That just doesn't happen very often anymore. We took a piece of the lemon blueberry cake, and the new york style cheesecake to go. We just shared the HUGE piece of lemon cake and the blueberry sauce and cream filling was equally awesome. This place is one of the best sushi spots in Downriver. I have not found a better spot. When I go here I usually sit at the sushi bar because I enjoy seeing the sushi chef making food. Also, they have conversation with their customers and give free samples sometimes. The place has always had great customer service with a variety of different sushi rolls. Also, they have great customer service and are friendly. I have never had a problem or had bad sushi. Love getting the nigiri which comes in 2 pieces. Also, have gotten their gyoza and that is pretty decent. I always recommend this place when someone asked me about a good sushi spot. read more
