Stopped in with wife and son on a quick Beer Passport outing. FOOD: No food truck at the time, only Zuppardi pizza's which were not bad, and hit the spot with our beer. SERVICE: Waitress was friendly and happy to give us samples of whatever you asked for. AMBIANCE: Small interior, and a little cold inside. Great beer posters depicting some of their flagship beers, picnic style tables, dog friendly and a few large tv's. Small outside seating area and an overlook of a wooded area through the parking lot. Waze took us into an entrance where there was no brewery sign, so a little difficult to find, though the other entrance (further down the road) did have a large sign at roadside. Black Hog Brewing Company is a craft brewery that opened in Oxford, Connecticut in August 2014. It was founded by brothers and hospitality entrepreneurs Jason & Tom Sobocinski and their business partner brewmaster Tyler Jones. The Sobocinski Brothers are also the founders of Crispy Melty by Caseus and Ordinary. Jason is also a partner in other hospitality ventures such as The Bagelry @ Olmo, Bear's Smokehouse @ The Stack, The Mystic Cheese Company and Haven Hot Chicken. Jones is an old family friend of the Sobocinskis and was a brewer for Portsmouth Brewery in New Hampshire. He wanted to move back to the New Haven area so he and his wife could be closer to family. He contacted the Sobocinskis about the possibility of opening their own brewery that would celebrate family and food, as well as encompass all that they were passionate about. The Sobocinski family frequently held Berskhire hog roasts to mark special occasions, so "Black Hog" was the name chosen for the new brewing venture. When Cavalry Brewing in Oxford closed down and went up for sale, the partners found the home for their brewery. I have visited Black Hog multiple times since they first opened in 2014. Not too many Connecticut breweries have lasted as long as them. My most recent visit was for a surprise 40th birthday party for one of my best friends. The taproom is on the smaller side but has a decent amount of seating (even more outside during the warmer months). The staff also informed us that they were in the middle of renovating the taproom and asked us to pardon their appearance. Some of the offerings that I enjoyed during this visit were the "Vienna Lager", the "Hazy Ale" (New England IPA), and the "Cold Pizza Pilsner" (Italian Pilsner). They were all pretty good but the latter was my favorite. I've enjoyed it a number of times and it's one of my favorite Black Hog beers overall; it's hoppy and refreshing. One of my favorite breweries in Connecticut and I can't believe I have not written a review yet. It's a bit out of the way but worth the drive. They have a variety of draft and can options as well as hard seltzers available. They also have some snacks but we always bring our own and have never had a problem My fav brews include their Ninja Ginga (a red) and their lager. Not to be outdone their barrel aged brews are also special and age well (we have several in our basement) Mark loves their Granola Brown and Leaves a Mark (imperial milk stout) They also have an outdoor patio (dogs welcome) and old school video games We also saw some kids in the brewery the last time so I guess they are welcome too read more

Sunday funday with family. Located in the back of a bunch of warehouses is this great brewery. Cute area outside where they have cornhole in the warmer weather. Inside is fairly small, but we got there early and grabbed the largest table. I was excited to see they make seltzer now. I try to avoid gluten, so I stuck with this option. We tried all 4 flavors and the raspberry lime was definitely the best. The guys drank and enjoyed the IPAs. They have games and coloring for kids. The arcade machine wasn't working though. I saw some people Playing giant Jenga too. Fun for all ages. read more

I've lived a mile from here for 4+ years yet some how I never did a review. Beer is solid with a lot of rotating and seasonal varieties. Taproom is a little warehousey but they have a number of tables, a few couches, and even a few arcade games (as well as board games), which all Manage to keep my 9 year old daughter entertained. There also is a section of the parking lot for outdoor seating, but we always seem to go there in bad weather. Square Peg Pizza doesn't appear to have their own Yelp page for this location, but they are a pizza restaurant with several locations and now operate a wood fired pizza truck on site. Everything we've gotten there has been excellent. We love living close, it's great for entertaining out of towners. read more

Black Hog is one of the most widely-distributed CT beers in the area (it seems), so I honestly hadn't thought to visit until a friend saw a Groupon steal. I'm glad we visited! For $15, we got the super flight, which was 12 tasters served in a muffin tray. This was a great way to taste some of their staples plus some more eclectic beers. (The Groupon deal also included two glasses and stickers.) There happened to be a corn hole tournament on this given Saturday, which was fun to watch but wasn't necessarily the primary focus of the outside crowd. There were a bunch of places to sit and also lots of people standing. There were a few large Jenga games, as well. Overall positive vibe and great on a sunny day. read more

We arrive about an hour after they open yesterday and they were super busy because they had just opened their disc golf course. We had to put our name on a list and waited about 45 minutes for a table. Be advised, there tables are closer to 6 feet than further. You can also not sample anything unless you are seated at a table. If you don't love crowds, I recommend taking beer to go. I had the Pomegrante Raspberry Passionfruit Sour and it was delicious and I look forward to trying more sours from them. A great CT brewery! The beer here is great & they always have fun events and food trucks. It's a great place to visit in the summer because they have a disc golf course that is tons of fun. I would love to see an upgrade the indoor area as it is rather small and dark causing us to not visit as often in the colder months when we can't sit outside. Black Hog is a great brewery with a nice setup. It was pretty busy on the day we visited, and there was a lot to see and do. As of this review, they are dog friendly on the patio (they actually had an ASPCA dog adoption faire going on at the time we visited!) and they had a number of tables set up. As always, double check with the brewery before bringing your dog, as regulations and enforcement changes. I do wish that they had a few more umbrellas set up on sunny days, as the metal stools were SUPER hot from the sun. Maybe an awning in the summertime. The inside is really nice as well, with lots of tables and funky decor that fits the aesthetic of the brewery. They have a nice setup for flights as well as single pints. While the beer isn't totally to my taste, I really enjoyed the time we spent here! read more

Kids playing jenga, groups of chatting friends, etc. Get the sampler if there are at least 2 of you (its 2 pints worth split across 12 varieties) - served in a muffin tray. It is way in back in an industrial / office park. Nice tunes that were a bit muted at the back. Furniture made from pallets, plenty of little cubbyholes to sit. Bring your own food, but it seems that food trucks are often there on Saturdays. It was cold when we went, but I think people can sit out front. As for the beers - clean and well made. A nice diversity of styles, so some you will like others, you won't. Life is like that. They are not "over the top"...appearing to go for variety in hops to punctuate, as opposed to add ins to dominate. I liked the the brown and the hog water. read more

First stop here and we enjoyed it. Beer was decent. We tried them all. I liked the stout and IPA styles. Others liked the Autumn seasonal beer. Ginga Ninja, a beer style I would usually duck from the description, was surprisingly good. It was fairly busy. Most of the tables were full and people were playing games and having a great time. For me I'd like TV's everywhere to watch sports on, but most breweries don't do that, so no knock on BH for not doing that. There was a BBQ truck outside (Twins BBQ) that served an outstanding brisket sandwich with broccoli rabe and cheese. Great job by BH to attract such a quality food truck. They were busy so I think that worked for both businesses. All in all this is a good stop if you find yourself in the area. Put it on your list! read more

Black Hog Brewery in Oxford, CT provided a decent experience. 2 1/2 stars. I went on a hot summer day and was quickly disappointed that there was no AC. Several doors were left open, giving the flies easy access - not a plus. (I assume they have heat for the winter) The signage is poor, so once you reach the sign at the top of the driveway, follow it along the left until you come to the last building. Don't fall for one of the closer buildings. The tasting room isnít very large, about 8 or so tables, but it's got some character. A bit more like a Half Full Brewery vibe (Stamford, CT) in that it's a portion of a warehouse thatís set up well for the space it has. The tabletops are palates (character) Sample glasses are served on top a baking tin intended for muffins. (character) The bartenders were chill. The signage inside had character. The Ms. Pacman arcade game was off but they offer some yard games in the front parking lot. Not appealing in the heat of the day. Important to eat beforehand or bring some food, as they recommend. They have some chips for sale, which were only a buck. Nice touch. A few more snacks would be great. The price of the sampler is excellent ($8 for 8 beers.) This is one of the better things they have going for them. They also sell a few cans of wine, which is great for when companions are looking for a different type of beverage. On Tap today: Easy Rye'da Granola Brown Ale Ginga' Ninja SWAG Coffee Milk Stout 5 Gallon pale Ale THC Calypso Bush Pig Project: Woodruff Weisse & an experimental that had pineapple in it (decent) I went to Black Hog because I am a big fan of Granola Brown Ale and have been hoping to be converted to Ginga' Ninja and Easy Rye'da . Neither wowed me on tap - oh well. Out of the 8, the only one that caught my attention, other than Granola Brown Ale, was the Coffee Milk Stout. It was flavored well and had a good body, but still wasn't something I'd order a full pint of (That's more due to my preferences though.) I do not hate on the beer selection. I believe some might thoroughly enjoy it. But for me, it was just alright. Add the heat to the mix and the fact that I like my beer COLD, things weren't going in my favor. I look forward to finding another brew of theirs in the future that I like. Typically, if there aren't a few beers that I'm wowed by, I don't consider the visit a success. Unfortunately, this falls into that category. (I chose to not even get my growler filled ) Drink Granola Brown! It's excellent. Chances are you'll find at least 1 or 2 others that you'll like. If you're in the neighborhood, check out the brewery on a fall or spring day and enjoy with some grub from home. But if you're traveling far like I was (about an hour), I'd choose another destination. A good bar with plenty of taps would be a better choice. read more

We are huge fans of this brewery and come through about twice a month! My favorite is the Ginga Ninja and my bf's is Granola Brown! I bought the T-Shirt at the brewery Saturday to show my love, I wore it to Home Depot on Sunday and got 4 compliments on it "cool art work." "we love that beer" "where is that place? "nice shirt!" We came through with a group of 11 people just as the place opened up, we threw 2 tables together and stayed a while! We brought our own snacks, plus there was a food truck! Growler fills, pints, flights and good times! The staff is friendly and welcoming. The offer flights with 8 samples which is pretty much unheard of, other places only offer 4-6 selections. I buy the cans at my local package store so I always have good beer on hand for the days the tap room isn't open. read more

I grew up near Oxford, and first came to Black Hog on a Friday afternoon in 2014. There was a small after-work crowd drinking $4 pints (since raised to $5, which is still a steal). You knew the place was going to get big because the beer was just so good. The Granola Brown, the Ginga Ninja, the SWAG, all take their respective styles to a new level. Let's face it, you can get pretty good beer at a lot of breweries across CT now; it takes real visionaries to stand out in the crowd. Somehow, the Black Hog team came up with a way of brewing beer as art, with each brew evoking a different kind of experience. The artwork and blurbs on those distinctive cans aren't just for show; they provide insight into the creative process behind each finished product. I've been back many times since 2014. Each time, there's a bigger crowd. Last Friday, the line for the counter was so long that the wait must have been 20 minutes or more. There were many clusters of people standing around in the parking lot outside, too, amidst the cornhole game and the food truck. The atmosphere of the place is so fun and relaxing that I didn't really mind, plus I showed up early enough to get my first pint before the big crowds hit. Rumor has it that they're going to knock down the wall behind the bar and double the size of the taproom. That'll be great, though I'm sure I'll continue to look wistfully back on the old days when it was still a local secret. read more

Really enjoyed our experience at Black Hog Brewing. It was a great Groupon value for the 12 beer tasting, 2 glasses, and 2 stickers. They serve the samples in a muffin tray, which I thought was pretty genius. Like many smaller breweries, there tasting space was modest, but they opened their new tasting room a day after we visited, so I am sure it is much improved. That being said the outside was nicely set up with tables, benches, jenga, and a corn hole set. In terms of brews for a small brewery Black Hog has a lot to offer. We particularly liked the Ginga Ninja, S.W.A.G., and perphaps their most well known, the Granola Brown. The higher alcohol special brews, such as the barleywine, were a standout. If you are looking for a comprehensive beer tasting experience and want to support a hard working small business Black Hog is a great place to go. Two reasons for not giving it 5 stars - Few signs and it's located at the rear of an industrial park. We ventured out on a snowy weekend to visit the guys at Black Hog based upon previous tastings of their beer with good reviews. What we found when we got there was perfect! The location itself is set FAR away from the road in an industrial park, so they may want to consider marking their wearabouts a little better. Once inside, it's a very pig-pen looking brewery with that theme matching their product perfectly! The food truck on site was spot on, the employees were very knowledgeable, and the tap list was fantastic! Even though they're close to 50 minutes away, I look forward to returning soon! read more
