I see a lot of great reviews, but personally, I don't get it. Prices are high for what you get, and service was iffy at best. I didn't like having to seek out the server for a water refill (not even 5 PM and not busy so no good excuse). Worse yet was sitting for 15 minutes after everyone was finished eating and waiting for server followup, then giving up and seeking her out (again) to get the check. The server was invisible for most of our 55 minute stay. Food: The Thai Curry Rice bowl featured overcooked/dry chicken, and the curry sauce was too thin and had too much of whatever else was added to it for flavor (lemon? ginger?). Not like any curry dish I've ever had and not especially appealing, especially to my Asian wife who knows authentic Thai cuisine and who wondered what it was they had actually served. The other 3 dishes all received 'ok' ratings (Brewmaster burger, Crab mac and cheese and seafood crepes) but no one felt especially wowed by the food. Atmosphere: None. Zilch. From the laminate flooring to the bare topped tables spread way to far apart, the place had a cold feeling from beginning to end. Table clothes, some accent lighting, table candles, and floor plants, as well as pushing the tables a bit closer might all help to give the place a cozier and a little more upscale feel. Maybe create a nice armchair and couch lounge area with some of that extra dining room space in the rear that they seem to be struggling to fill. Theme: Supposedly comfort food, but other than chicken pot pie, I didn't see much I'd classify as comfort food. In fact from the restaurant name, to the menu, the restaurant seems to have an identity crisis. 'Black Forest' led me to believe this would be a German restaurant, which is why we stopped (wasn't one here a long long time ago?). The menu was also rather themeless but featured a burger (what the heck is a 'vegan roll?), a turkey sandwich, lamb shanks a Thai rice bowl, fish crepes, and a couple different types of salad and flat bread pizza. If they are aiming for 'comfort food with a creative twist' as their logo tagline states, I'd expect a steak, meat loaf, mashed potatoes, sautéed mushrooms, a pasta dish or two, etc. Common Man, Cotton and Homestead have much better examples of a comfort food menu. This effort feels a little confused, too California fru fru, and maybe tries too hard to be fresh and healthy, while missing some of the basics that would have made the experience more satisfactory and left me wishing I could stay longer and order more than one entre. Didn't happen. The Good: Clean, and a nice looking bakery display. However, because of the poor service, we didn't stick around for dessert. I am cautiously curious about their breakfast buffet but worried it would feature bean sprouts and arugula. Summary: As they've apparently been around since 1988, maybe it's just one table's lacking experience, but there are too many good restaurants in the area for me to come back for dinner anytime soon. read more

I've been here before and have had an excellent experience! I went here today with some friends, and it was not excellent. To start off, we had to wait about 15 minutes or so for a table. There were plenty of tables for us to sit at, so we were confused. We finally sit down and it took a long time to get waited on. Our server did not seem to care that we were waiting. We ordered right away, because we had been waiting for some time and knew what we wanted. I ordered a burger "well done." So the burger comes, and I start to eat it. I noticed that it wasn't well done, and it was possibly cooked medium or medium rare. This caused great concern for me as I am pregnant and it's not safe to consume meat like that. I asked my friends to look, and they agreed with me. I called the waiter back over, and he said, "no you ordered medium." He did not seem to have any remorse. Immediately, I said I ordered well done, and my friends also said I asked for my burger to be well done. He said he could get me another burger that could be cooked well done. I thought for sure the burger would have been taken off the final bill, but it was not. I am extremely disappointed with the service at this establishment. The food is good, but I will not be eating in the dining room anymore due to the lack of respect and service by your wait staff. read more

Excellent! Had a great experience and delicious food. Started with lamb sliders, then had Maple Bourbon Chicken sandwich . Tasty bacon jam on the sandwich, perfectly cooked roasted yellow potatoes on the side. My husband had the Count sandwich and my bite of that was so good. Can't wait to try dessert! The service is great and the environment is quaint and comfy. Enjoyed the herbed scone and cracker basket as well as the crab cake appetizer! The disappointment came with the entrees..the shrimp scampi was overly lemony with bland, undercooked shrimp. My husband didn't eat it. :( The Buddha bowl was good outside of having the same issue with the shrimp. Prices are high as well so added to the frustration. Living around I can tell you. It is a peace place, where you can have a really conversation and enjoy a good food, with out noise TVs, laugh music. Second trip here - I travel Route 101 occasionally and my first stop was a successful quick grab and go lunch. Delicious roast beef wrap that was easy to travel and eat with. My second stop was with my clan and we opted to sit and eat lunch. Eric did a nice job with service considering they were bustling during the holiday - we came just at the right time. I had a bite of turkey burger and it was excellent - perfectly done with just the right crisp on the bun. I had the Green Salad with chicken - I made the assumption that the chicken would be grilled/warm but it was still very good. Another had a very good salad and added the grilled chicken - which was warm? They told me the tofu salad was excellent - I took their word for it and decided to stick with real meat! Overall, good value, great service and would stop again. One constructive criticism was more structural which I will contact the cafe directly and didn't affect my experience but should be brought to their attention. read more

This place was extremely unethical, all about how to get a profit through deceiving the customers. I came here with my friends as my friend's recommendation. I ordered a chicken pot pie as a lunch entree, and the server (mid age woman) asked me "would you like to have a salad? Today's dressing is xxx. It is very delicious ..." I said "sure I'll have a salad". She said " ok, Would you want me to bring before the meal?" I said before the meal is fine. To be caucious, I asked her "does the salad come with the meal right? She said " no, this is separate". I looked at the menu, the salad was another entree beside the chicken pot pie. The price of the salad was about $7.50...( it means that she ordered the salad which was another entree without telling me that was a separate cost) it was acceptable if the salad was $1-2 as a lunch set menu coming with the chicken pot pie but she actually tried to device me to order another entree (=salad),,,, Who is going to do this to the customers? ... As a customer, I was so insulted. If I didn't ask if this salad was an extra cost, I probably ended up paying for another entree.., she wasn't ethical as a waitress because she didn't explain to the customer to tell this was the extra cost but instead she asked " would you like to have salad?". Everybody wants to have salad if she asked that way. Also, everybody expects the salad comes with meal of she asked that way. If I were a child, I would probably said yes without doubting her. She should've asked like this to be an ethical waitress " Would you like to have salad as another entree? this will be extra cost" . Also, my friend ordered becon sandwiches and our waitress asked us if we wanted to try the home made ketchup. We said yes, but she never brought it to us, this was because the ketchup was a sample therefore cost was including the inside of sandwiches, this means that she couldn't charge any cost from us, hence she didn't bring it. Also, she used the fish pot which serves water... This is actually selling at the berkely before you leave the store,, this makes customers to think to purchase the products. All food and proucts that they were using at this restaurant was selling at the berkely or gift store. I felt this is some kind of the scheme... But since buying the products or not was a customer's choice so I don't mind this, but I really mind why she tried to make me to purchase the salad without having the explanation of the anther cost. I didn't say anything to her because this place was friends recommendation but I will never come back this unethical place. The food itself wasn't bad (but pretty expensive for the area like $13- $18 for the lunch. I don't think it is worth it for the area. I hate this services. read more

Great Food, HORRIBLE Service. Won't go back! Pros: Food is wonderful. Their menu is creative, fresh and healthy. Cons: Staff is RUDE! I have frequented Black Forest for many years including their dining room, market and have even had them host a party for me. I have always been very happy with their food, but often found the staff to be unfriendly. My experience this past Sunday was no exception. My husband and I brought our 3 year old daughter in for lunch. I said hello to the girl behind the counter and was ignored, to which my daughter stated "Why didn't she say hi?" Maybe, she didn't hear me, but she clearly saw me since I was standing directly in front of her across the counter and as such should have should have been asked what I wanted. Another girl ended up having to stop what she was doing to come wait on us while the other girl continued to stand their ignoring us. I saw they had a grilled cheese sandwich ON the menu. I asked if they could just make a cold ham and cheese sandwich. They whispered between themselves for a moment and told me they could not and handed me the menu. I pointed out that they WERE offering a grilled cheese so could they please just make a cold ham and cheese. They again refused. I asked if they had ham. They said they did. I then pointedly said, "You have ham and you're offering a cheese sandwhich, yet you're refusing to make my 3 year old a simple ham and cheese sandwhich?" They explained that going off menu was just "too much work" for the kitchen when they're so busy with brunch. I hardly consider throwing a piece of ham on a sandwich going "off menu". My husband then asked for the manager. He calmly explained what had happened and was surprised to hear the manager reaffirm what we had already been told. He then politely told her that we were very disappointed and that after several years of patronage we will not be returning, nor we would be recommending them to anyone as we had so readily in the past. It's... ok. I've been here several times, and I can't come up with more than that. On the most recent trip, I wasn't very hungry, and just got a cup of clam chowder, which was pretty bad (thick, gloppy, tasteless, with too many potatoes and too few clams). Maybe I would have been happier trying a different dish? The bakery items are ridiculously over priced, so much so that I was spared any temptation of buying one. I feel somewhat out off place giving this review as many of my local friends and fellow reviewers rave about the black forest, but my wife and I have been twice now for lunch and found both experiences to be lack luster at best. Our lunch yesterday started out great... the parmigiano bread was fresh and fabulous. Unfortunately that was the highlight of the meal. We started with 2 mulled ciders and I had the clam chowder. The ciders were tasty but at $4 apiece, we expected a generous serving, not the 6 Oz juice cup they came out in (no refills on the sider either - yes I did ask). My clam chowder was a disappointment too. The clams were over cooked and at $6.50 a bowl, I expected better as I have had much better chowder at the Pasta Loft in Milford for half the price. Then came our burgers. I had the black forest with bacon and swiss and my wife had the Mediterranean veggie burger. Both were so over cooked they were devoid of any juices or moisture. My burger also had an old taste to the meat as if it had been in and out of the freezer several times during the week. The highlight of the meal was the homemade ketchup. With two bugers at $13.50 and $11.50 apiece, it's pretty sad when the best thing you can say about your main courses is that the ketchup was great. Our server was polite and friendly but we did ask for more bread twice but never got a refill. Our total for lunch came to $50 with tip. I am sorry friends but the black forest is overpriced for what you get. Drive another couple of miles and have lunch on the milford oval somewhere and you will get an as good or better meal at much better value. read more

my husband enjoys eating in their cafe for lunch - coffee, soups, sandwiches and plenty of homemade tasty cookies and treats. He took me here for dinner though - They have separate dining room for the evening. Black Forest is american comfort food done right! I am still thinking of the 4 cheese macaroni I had; need to go back to satisfy my craving! It's decorated somewhat like a Perkins; but don't let that fool you - the food is more upscale the decor! But, at the same time, it was amazing food in an unpretentious atmosphere. Plenty of locals and kids were, pretty sure our neighboring table was celebrating their birthday. Remarkable breakfast yesterday. Perfect made-to-order vegetable omelet (one piece of each filling used as a garnish ---very clever!) and a terrific pear/cranberry "cider". The piece de resistance, however, was a little item in the bakery basket called a " cinnamon butter puff". Looks like a small sugar-coated muffin, very dense. The first bite blew me away. Melt-in-the-mouth. Don't even know how to describe it. If the President had one, he'd give it a Medal of Freedom. The Kennedy Center would have a ceremony for it. It was that good. Very sad to write this. The food is WONDERFUL, unique, fresh, and my Mom and I love to go there but now that she has a walker, we can't go. The ladies bathroom door is tiny, tiny and my Mom has to let go of her walker to get in there. I hate that restaurants have nice handicap parking places but when you get into the building, it's not designed well.
