Black Daimond Games is best place to find new boards games as well as all your other rpg, table top, or jigsaw puzzle needs. I have been going to Black Daimond since I moved to the area in 2014 and it has remained my favorite shop even after I moved farther away. Over the years Black Daimond has expanded to have a second table play area, started carrying a wider variety of goods, including Gundam and miniature house models. It is rare to go into Black Daimond and not find something new and exciting to pick up. They may not carry every model or game but they are constantly expanding and turning over product, plus they may even be able to pre-order items if you ask. The staff is always fantastic and friendly. They can help make recommendations if you're looking for a gift and they make sure you're buying things that make sense, like double checking you have a base game if you are only purchasing an expansion, so you don't waste your time or money. And to help save some extra money, they commonly sell a variety of games at a good discount which are considered "ding & dent" that they get from their distributors. The damage could be like a forklift went through or crushed the box, but I have lucked out many times where the damage is just a slightly smooshed corner that you couldn't even tell if you didn't know about it. read more

Yeah why do the best card shops have to be in the middle of nowhere? Black Diamond Games is a game/hobby shop located in the back side of the Park and Shop strip mall in Concord (home to Ranch 99, Kevin's Noodle House, formerly Fry's electronics, etc.). It's very well stocked with tons of board games, TCG accessories, and more. I've been looking for Katana sleeves for a while in San Jose, where basically every store is sold out of them. I was pleasantly surprised to find a wide selection available here. They also had some more niche Anime sleeves, such as Grand Archive art sleeves. They have a impressive game room in the back with free play available if they're not running an event at the time. There's a bunch of board games on the shelves which you can borrow to play. There's even a well-kept bathroom in the game room. Overall, it seems like a really chill place to hang out and play board games or TCG. The staff is friendly here as well. If I can nitpick about a few things, one is that they don't have TCG singles in their display cases, and two is that some of their items don't have prices labeled on them, so you need to ask. Looking back, I wish we had a store like this in San Jose. The closest we've got is maybe CardArt or pre-Covid Legends Eastridge. Enough talk. read more

I went here for a gaming event and the place is quite aesthetically pleasing for what it's worth. It was a hot day, so the place was blasting some needed AC. The place has two levels to it, so it felt like the AC was more obvious in the lower level than in the gaming area upstairs, which needs fans to compensate. But that's alright, whatever it takes. The products were reasonably priced, including some items which felt tempting to buy. The staff were very helpful and were very accommodating, considering that I'm a first timer. Used to think that going to big retail stores and chains are the only places I can find board games, until my girl and I stumbled upon this place. They have an array of selections to choose from, old and new. We almost spent 2 hours here looking at all the different games they have. I would imagine this place is for game board enthusiasts, and individuals who just need a few games for a party. Loved how they had a separate section of "dented" games for a cheaper discount. This particular section had board games with minor dents on the boxes, but still had all the proper parts to play. Inside looks really nice but I went in to play modern. It started by them telling us we were ok 4 rounds. In the middle of some matches I went to look at the singles they had for sale but the guy just told me that one guy took care of single sales but didn't tell me who or when. So I just went back to my table and at the end when I asked about how the prizes worked. The guy started stuttering some stuff before saying that prizes just go to the 3's and 4's. He couldn't even tell me how it worked. I went on their discord to try and maybe figure it out but they just deleted my post. I will never be going back here because of my experience. I always try and support my local game store. If we don't support them, we will not have them. The last few times I have been here it is always the same experience, "Lazy employees, who don't care that you are in their store!" Here is a pro tip, "Say hello when someone walks into your empty store." Maybe even stop your personal conversation and ask, "Can I help you? Looking for anything In particular?" I ended up buying 1 game (60 bucks) I might have bought another game, but I needed more information, "Would hate to interrupt their conversation, about getting a Pepsi." Hey not to worry, "black Diamond games will never have to worry about my shadow darkening their door, or feeling my cash pass through my hands--ever!" They clearly don't need my business or yours. Having shopped here multiple times since we moved to the Bay Area since last summer, it was shocking to me that I had to actually go back and change my review. Originally I rated this place as 5/5 stars due to their staff presence and cordial nature and they had a great selection of Warhammer 40k and Games Workshop items in general. But I found out recently that on their social media platforms, if you mention anything other than their store, you will get blocked and kicked from their Facebook groups with no warnings. I was told by the owner that I was "spamming" for trying to spread awareness of other events in the local area and other gamestores. I can definitely understand it if I was given a warning or just a headsup not to post of other stores (due to competition and sales, makes sense), but I wasn't even given that. The idea was to grow a community of tabletop gamers regardless of store and unfortunately I was stopped from doing that. It's unfortunate to say they lost a customer, and it is no fault to their staff, who even on the phone were super polite and just explained the cause of the conflict. read more

This is my all time favorite card shop for all my MTG needs. If I want to play in a tournament, grab some urgent needed packs, or stock up on card accessories then I usually come to Black Diamond Games, my neighborhood card shop. Every once in a while, I like to support my local card shop and buy a few packs of MTG from them. The only caveat is that it's much more expensive to buy in the card shop, but again, gotta support them as they provide a communal space for MTG events. What makes this place ESPECIALLY more special is that it is CLEAN and there is NO funky, stinky odor. As many of you who have gotten to read this far know, card shops can be smelly and stuffy. I am happy to report that this place does not have that distinctive odor which is a definite plus. I do like how they have an ipad that provides their entire inventory but it can be inefficient and tiresome. I remember I had a list of cards to trade in and it was tedious going through this process. I also feel they should have more ipads as having only one can create a line. The space for card tournaments is massive. Their card shop is technically 2 stories; they have tables in an area downstairs and upstairs. I love this separation so the shop doesn't feel claustrophobic and stuffy. The store is also well lit and they have lockers for rent to store your belongings. Of course they sell drinks and snacks for gamers who stay for awhile. I love how the store is organized and not messy. I've seen many card shops who don't care about store appearances. As someone who grew up on Pokémon and YuGiOh, there's major nostalgia in this kind of shop. As an adult, I'm getting into board games with my wife and it's like completing the circle. I guess the most practical part of this review is that yes, the store associates are absolutely awesome as well. My wife picked Pandemic out of a few recommendations by a gal when she went in alone, based on our noobiness to modern board games and preference for cooperative games. Together on another visit, my first, we asked a gentleman about a deck-building card game that's "harder" (totally subjective and preferential) than Hogwarts Battle (what got us into these board games in the first place!) and we got overwhelmingly delighted with Arkham Horror! I absolutely can't wait for the gaming area to open up again. As a child, I was often too shy to play or even watch Pokémon or YuGiOh duels, let alone board games. Now, forget the shyness, I'm just so excited! I've been holding off on this review for a while because I kept hoping that my negative experiences were just flukes and kept brushing them off as not really a big deal. But after my third visit I knew this was just how this store is. Their staff are very much rude elitists who think they're better than the average "gamer". I've also noticed how differently my partner and I are treated when we visited as compared to other customers. We've walked in right after another couple and hear them get greeted warmly and enthusiastically "Hey how are you? Do you need any help finding anything?" Then we barely get acknowledged with a cold "Hey." We both let it go because it's fine, just odd. What really bothered me was hearing one of the employees make a snide comment about how we don't spend a ton of money in the store. "Oh they almost spent $20 this time." Which just pisses me off. We were willing to drop over $100 on minis, buy your paint, and keep coming back on a weekly basis because we want to support our local game stores. But since your staff think that we shouldn't be there I guess we'll take the hint and take our business elsewhere. I took my 7 year old nephew here today because he is interested in learning how to play Magic The Gathering. I don't know much about the game but the staff here was so patient answering all my nephews questions. They gave us 2 free Welcome Packs of cards and also steered us in the direction of a starter kit that contains 2 evenly matched standard decks so we can learn to play against one another. While I have a feeling the game is a little too complex for my nephew to fully grasp at this point, it's clear our visit to Black Diamond has really kindled his interest in MTG and card and table tops generally. He thought it was so cool they have dedicated spaces to play games with friends! I don't remember the names of the two employees that helped me, but they were working there at noon on Sunday May 7th. Well, this new location has certainly rectified the two grumbles in my previous review, which cost BDG a star. Parking is ridiculously abundant, and comparing the size of the two stores is like comparing a foxhole to the Death Star. Moving in the right direction. So why haven't I upped them to 5 *'s? Unfortunately, it seems like the new location also came with some less awesome new staff. Several times I've found myself standing at the register, cash in hand, while a clerk was busy dinking around in the game room or yakking with a friend by the comics. Sorry to disturb your bitchin' Space Marine skirmish, dude, I'm just over here trying to help you guys make rent. That said, it's still the best game store in the county. By, like, A LOT. And if the owner Gary is around, ignore everything I said in the last paragraph because he rocks on toast. Always knowledgeable, always prompt.
