This place is awesome! We went on a Friday night around 8pm and while it started out sort of empty, it quickly filled in. Got in there a little bit late on Friday night. Had to wait about six or seven minutes before someone even recognized we were there and seated us. The drinks were really really good and the food was great quality. The downstairs bar area is beautiful. The only thing I would say is that they are not thrilled about boisterous Americans. We were trying to be fun and respectful, but I just wanted to put that out there in the event somebody with a very loud and wild party was planning on going. You can order off the menu which gives you historical information about the location and the drinks, though I suggest letting the bartenders do their thing. They'll let you know if there are historical significances to the base of their creations as well. The cocktails are also gorgeous. I got a drink with a stamped ice cube. I normally do not write reviews, However my wife and i were on vacation in Prague and this bar came highly recommended. I arrived around 5:00pm and asked to go to the bar they guided the 4 of us upstairs. We had a few drinks and ate on the rooftop. After eating we went back to the bar and asked for a table. This time they did not seat us at the main bar but put us in a room away from everyone. The hostess told me everyone was eating and since I had already eaten, they did not have any room. Not one person was eaten at main bar which i pointed out to the hostess. I told him he had two empty tables he then told me they were reserved. I was out with friends in old towne for my first night in Prague and we ended up here after dinner. My friend had already been on past visits so he knew it would be a great spot. We really lucked out considering there were 6 or 7 of us that we didn't have to wait and got seated at a table right away. We're all big on sharing our experiences so it was tough to not take pictures based on how cool the place is, but we respected their wishes. Be aware of the fact that you need to go down a couple flights of stairs to get into the basement. My friend had a bum knee but she just took her time. We only stayed for one cocktail, but everyone got something different so we got to see a variety of the menu options. Each one was unique with its own glass and flavor profile. OMG. We fell in love with this bar! One of the drinks here is the BEST cocktail I ever had. EVER. And I'm not too much of a cocktail drinker but this one cocktail blew my mind away. "From dust to foam" is the drink name. The concoctions are gin, grapefruit, aperol with a egg white foam infused with elderberry and some grapefruit rinds. This is probably the 2nd best bar I have ever visited (the first was a speakeasy called "Please Don't Tell" in NYC). If you are in Prague, DO NOT MISS YOUR CHANCE TO VISIT THIS BAR! The best cocktail in all of the land is from this dark cave below the streets of Praha. "From Dust Till Foam" was a perfectly made concoction of gin, grapefruit, egg white foam and bitters. This historic underground bar is a must-visit when in Old Town Prague. I say this in high regard to the attractiveness to tourists, their magnificent concoctions, and the historical background of the cellar and bartending legend -Alois Krcha. With exposed brick and gothic architecture, a display of rare whiskeys, live piano playing, the bar rules, and the intriguing diary and notes of Alois from way back when ...I truly felt like I was at some museum/amusement park for adults. And what a ride it was! The drink menu is inspired by the stories/travels of Alois. There's practically a story behind each drink, and all were fascinating! I ended up ordering the Bohemian Manhattan. It was quite a spectacle with the foggy effect, the chilled flask, and the small piece of toast with spread on a wooden paddle serving board. Like the regular Manhattan cocktail, but made with Czech single-malt whiskey. This drink was on the strong side and somewhat rough with heavy bitters. Three thumbs up for the extra flask refill! Another drink that got us "balling" was Jeremy's Swizzle Stick. Inspired by "titillating films and Ron de Jeremy," this drink was all across the board from being sweet and spicy. With beer freely flowing like the Vtlava river, it didn't even occur to me about having proper cocktails in Prague. Until Black Angel's Bar. The location is touristy as heck, but the crowd is very international. Down in the rock-cave basement of Hotel U Prince, this bar is sexy, sexy, sexy! The ingredients are all top notch: fresh squeezed juices, home made bitters and high quality booze. Since we're in Prague, I can live like a queen here. About $6 for a cocktail which I would normally pay $12 in San Francisco? game on, liver! We were able to sample all the sections of the menu: newly minted in English in a handsome leather bound book. In the mood for cognac? the East India cocktail is the perfect opener, then follow it up with a sidecar, which of course, comes with a sidecar. (don't you love getting 2 drinks for the price of one?) Whiskey lovers wil feel luxurious holding an exquisite crystal glass. The sazerac is a MUST order. It comes with an absinthe ice ball that changes the taste of the cocktail while it melts. I mean, how ingenious is that? Do I also need to mention the phenomenal piano player who was playing old school rock and even some Elvis tunes? Our tour guide books all listed this as a must visit, so we did. We stopped by one evening around 6:30pm for a cocktail. The bouncer/greeter was a little bit unnecessary to enter the location. He looked us over and directed us to the hostess. The menu was interesting in its layout, but could have been easier to read. I was a little off put by the curt attitude of the bouncer upstairs and the seating hostess who were less than friendly, but that may have been my perception as an American (friendly looks different in different places). We were seated under the stairs and had an amazing serve (I really wish I could remember his name very cute guy from Czechia). Between the 4 of us we probably drink 6 cocktails each at about $5-$6 USD/each we literally couldn't get enough. Very high quality cocktails with fun little surprises. Also the live jazz was a nice touch especially during the holiday season. Pro - tip order the penicillin and don't be afraid to ask for special requests. I am so happy that my brother in law pulled us out to the bar one night and we ended up at Black Angel's. It is known as one of the top cocktail joints in the world so we had to check it out! Each drink is specially crafted from an old book they found in the basement of an old hotel when they were clearing it out for renovation. Between 3 of us we tried 9 on the list and were not disappointed in the least. I would highly recommend the Treasure Island because you get a link to a video on how they found the recipe book for their cocktails. Keep in mind that this place is in the basement of a hotel and people smoke heavily down there so checking your coat upstairs is a good idea. The staff was amazing and it was awesome to watch and the over all ambiance went well with the theme, dark and mysterious. Advice: bypass the hostess in the lobby if she tells you there is no room downstairs. We went back to the back and waited upstairs for a moment and then sent one us down to ask if they had room. I talked some trash before heading down the stairs and declared that there is no way this place could be anywhere near the same level of what we've become accustomed to in the states. It's in the thick of all the tourist action, but oddly enough was not overrun by tourists either of the times that we payed this place a visit. It feels like it should be hidden on the outskirts of the city as the best kept secret that only locals should know, but thankfully for us, it's easily located and my favorite bar in all of Prague. The cocktails were insane. Truly insane. Even though the cocktail book is thick and extensive, I don't even know what I was ordering since I simply played dealer's choice and gave him free reign to get me loopy on whatever he concocted. The process, the presentation, the attention to detail, the flavors and the prices are all on point here. Seriously, not a single drink missed and I ran the gamut with everything from whiskey to absinthe. I think my willingness to be open to anything at Black Angel's really pleased the bartender and broke him out of his routine a little bit - seemed like someone was asking him to make a Moscow mule every few minutes. There was some hesitation at first but once he realized when I said "go ahead, anything," I really meant anything. The result was a few glasses of brilliance able to stand their ground in any great cocktail city. The place itself is cool, it is worth having a drink at to see, located underground you feel like you are someplace else, not next to old town square. We went here twice, once as a couple and again as a party of four. It's quite the international crowd, but the key to a five star experience is to sit at the bar. If you're escorted to a table by the fish tanks, you're not near the bar. Sit like you're going to stay, then ask after about 5 minutes if you can sit near the bar. Tell them you'll wait, because if you're sitting away from the bar, you'll be waiting a long time for your drink anyway and you'll miss the show. This is a speakeasy type vibe, candlelight, dark wood, exposed brick. No photos are allowed, which is in line with the vibe of a speakeasy. Respect this and you'll have a great time. The bartenders are certified mixologists, meaning you can tell them a liquor or a flavor you like and they can make you a one of a kind drinkable art-piece. They enjoy being creative. The best part of being at the bar is watching them make the drink (this may also be why it takes so long to get to tables). They have fun making the drink, sashaying and stirring and jiving, flipping cups, glasses, creating optical illusions with the liquid gold. It's really a performance. The pianist(s) really add to the speakeasy vibe. American classics from decades long gone as well as top 40 songs you can help but sing along to. Czechs have a reputation for being standoffish, grumpy or flat out rude. There's a saying that goes "don't judge something abroad by the standards you use at home." The whiskey selection is average, I was told there is some difficulty is getting some whiskeys in the Czech Republic. You would pay what you expect to pay for drinks at a bar like this. The bartender, actually a mixologist, was really amazing. He really knew his stuff and provided great service. This place is definitely a must see when you are in Prague. Also we read some negative reviews about the no photo policy. There is a sign posted on the front door. We injured about this policy from the staff. We were told the owners want to project a speakeasy or prohibition feel to the place and respectfully do not allow photos.
