Prague is absinthe capital of world! My alcoholic drink of choice is absinthe. While I don't drink often, when I do, absinthe is one of my choices, so of course I was going to drink absinthe while I'm here. Not only does Absintherie serve as a beautiful absinthe bar, it's also a small absinthe museum! They have displays with fascinating information about the history of absinthe, and items related to the making of absinthe. Since it's a Prague specialty, I chose to drink macerated absinthe. It was so fun to watch the bartender expertly handle the drink and the flames. Once my drink was made, I wandered around Absintherie while enjoying my drink and enjoying the displays and learning omre about absinthe. They used to sell absinthe ice cream here, according to a blog I read back in the early 2010s. Unfortunately, due to regulations in Prague, absinthe ice cream is no longer offered. However, the bartender who served me quickly whipped up a small bowl for me. When I asked him how much I owe him, he said don't worry about it, they only give it to nice people. There are a few absinthe Bars downtown. Both are good, though this one stands out with their Absinthe selection and presentation earning it my number once choice. The staff is very friendly and helpful while also being knowledgeable about the different types of absinthe, its history, and the preparation methods associated with them. I tried a few different selection and enjoyed them all, especially the choices the staff recommended. I picked up some Absinthe chocolate which also proved to be a neat purchase. If you like Absinth this is the place to drink it. Cool spot a short walk from Old Town Square. They have tons of different absinthes. I recommend trying one of the Czech ones -- different than the French style. After that grab a cocktail or two -- I personally enjoyed the Absinthe Gingerbread Mule and the one with the cat in the name (I forget what it was exactly ) . Came here for drinks after having dinner in the area with the bf and a friend when we were in town a few weeks ago. True absinthe is hard to come by in the U.S. still, and despite reading articles from locals about how absinthe isn't even worth seeking out if you're looking for unique spirits in Prague and/or the Czech Republic, we still felt like we should try some for ourselves. We chose to come here as it happened to be in Franz Kafka Square, and we felt like the 2 together just seemed so very Czech. The bar itself is fairly small, but they do do table service, so you don't have to order at the bar necessarily. The list for absinthes was quite staggering, and since I'm not a very big fan of the taste of absinthe, I decided to opt for a six-toed cat cocktail instead. The bf decided to get an absinthe zombie cocktail, and my friend opted for one of the Czech absinthes instead. We were served rather promptly, and while the cocktails packed quite the punch, both the bf and I should've done what my friend had done and ordered an actual glass of absinthe instead. It came with a very ornate fountain of water, replete with smoking dry ice, which dripped slowly onto a sugar cube on top of a slotted spoon into the absinthe, the way it's traditionally served. We were at least glad that one of us had opted to get straight absinthe so that we could witness this for ourselves, and for that reason alone, I think it's worth coming here. Also, the bar itself has tons of art nouveau ads for absinthe, so you feel like you're on the set for Moulin Rouge. read more

Ahead of my move to Prague, I read "do not drink absinthe!!" on local blogs. I didn't take heed, and I'm glad I was able to form my own opinion! I stumbled upon this spot twice this weekend. The first time, my roommate and I popped in, looked around, and decided we didn't feel like drinking anymore so we moved along. Last night, a group of us happened to walk by it yet again and decided to see if they could squeeze us in. By a stroke of luck, a group got up as we walked in, so the seven of us jumped on it. Shortly thereafter, a sweet server came to take our order. I selected the berry absinthe cocktail, while a few of my friends went with the raspberry bramble absinthe. While my berry drink was delicious (and had real blueberries in it!), I had a taste of theirs and knew I had to order it. By far, the raspberry bramble runs the show if you want a sweet drink without much of a kick. Only downside: the blueberry on the mixing stick is, indeed, fake. Do not try to eat it. Good news: I was not on my face after drinking the two cocktails. Thank goodness! Now, keep in mind: If you need to use the facilities here, you are WARNED: You may walk out of the single stall to a dude midstream at the urinal...which is conveniently situated directly next to the one sink. He and I both looked so uncomfortable at the interaction. I bolted out of there so quickly after rinsing my hands... Yikes. But yeah, it's a cool spot otherwise and the upstairs area is awesome. I walked in on a lim. I mean I wasn't even planning on drinking but the decor doors really got me. After a day of traveling and walking up and down Charles bridge I thought why not ? Let's do it! I was automatically greeted by a very friendly bartender and given a menu. I ordered the front drink but there were so many more drinks that caught my eye. This is a tiny place just around the corner from the old town square and its Meet Burger. Look for the door with the green glow... follow the green fairy. There is not much room to sit, but it doesn't take much time (or money, really) to get a bit happy here. Not that I'm any kind of expert, but I would recommend the beetle absinthe. That's what was recommended to us and it is prepared here in the Czech style: lit on fire. Watch them prepare it; that's worth the price right there. When they say sip it and alternate with water... LISTEN TO THEM. Wow. An experience if you're in Prague and have never had absinthe prepared in this style before. I encourage you to experience absinthe on its own, even if you share 40 ml with others, before you get one of the many cocktails or other absinthe-containing products. We came so the guys could try Absinthe and we all ended up trying it. They had a huge list of Absinthe but we wanted to try a Czech brand. He explained the difference between macerated and distilled. He said the macerated would be less harsh so we went with that. I thought that it was just going to be a small drink in a little glass and we would be done, but it was a show! He started with sugar cubes on the top of metal containers, one for each drink, then lit them on fire.. He then lit the alcohol on fire and poured fire into the glasses. I videoed it but even the smaller ones were too big to post here. The place is beautiful especially the mural in the front room with a green Absinthe fairy and Vincent Van Gogh giving her his ear as he sits at the bar and drinks Absinthe. I love his work and it was in that style. Very pretty. I didn't feel any effects from the Absinthe. Maybe you have to drink a lot? I was a little worried about its reputation, but all for naught. Dark little spot tucked away on a pedestrian block not far from the Astronomical Clock. Never having had absinthe and it being very close to the apartment I was renting, I went in completely clueless. The bartender/waiter came over and I explained I was an absinthe newbie and asked what he recommended - they have well over 50 different bottles from different countries. He asked if I wanted to try a Czech brand and he suggested one which was macerated (King of Spirits). From the little reading I had done, I had read macerated is more like moonshine and distilled would be a better drink (not sure how true this is, but I went with it), so I asked for a distilled kind instead. He sort of rolled his eyes and suggested one which I went with (St. Antoine). I didn't get a very friendly feeling from him which I was bummed about, since it seemed people had great experiences here and I was hoping to have the same. After a little bit, he came over with all the required equipment - water dispenser, spoon, sugar cube and explained how it worked. Off he went. Pretty much never to return again for a long time until I had to flag him for the check. 5* for the environment/drinks 2* for service. read more

From the moment you see this place from the outside, you know it is going to be good. Lots of green lights which I imagine is to symbolize the green fairy that you may see if you drink too much absinth. The music was modern roaring twenties ish the decor was spectacular, and there were plenty of places to sit downstairs or upstairs. Our server was not super friendly, but in Prague this seems to be the norm. I would suggest you don't take it personally and chalk it up to a cultural way of getting to the point. We ordered a couple of absinthe drinks and both were spectacular. We enjoyed the music so much we asked the bartender what it was and he shared us the playlist on Spotify. The prices are super reasonable, I think our drinks were maybe seven u.s. dollars each, and I call them drinks but they were closer to works of art. If you are in Prague and you want to try absinthe or just go to a cool place to hang out at night, I suggest you give this place a try. She did also recommend drinks when we asked what was good. Drinks: I've come to realize absinthe is not my drink of choice, but because we were there to try absinthe we decided to order a variety of absinthe shots, ordered the absinthe beer and cocktails. There is one absinthe shot in particular that you should get... It's the one with the beetle in the bottle yes.. You might also be lucky and land a beetle leg in your glass. The service here was great. The server took the time to explain everything and really let us know about the products. I settled for the King of Spirits in the traditional Czech way. She warned me not to just shoot it as it was strong. After showing me the process of melting the sugar I took a sip of it and man was it bad. It was worse than Chinese liquor. After a minute of trying to recover from the taste I just shot it whole even though I was warned not to do it. Next I ordered it the French way with the water and the dried ice. It created a cool effect with the dripper. The absinthe was much smoother this way and I was able to actually sip this one though it still didn't taste very good. The price was close to $8 for each drink but was a good price for the experience and service. Like others mention, drinks are expensive but you are definitely paying for ambiance. 170cz for basic absinthe over fire. For 95 I got the winter absinthe punch (delicious).
