I have both BJ's and Costco's memberships and let me say that they are worlds apart, even though the Dedham locations are about 1/2 mile from one another. The Dedham Costco is generally well-stocked with professional, approachable, easy-to-find staff and ample checkout registers with cashiers, so lines move quickly. BJ's is a whole other creature--at least that location is. BJ's tends to have a wider variety of inventory items. For instance, Costco might only carry Charmin and their Kirkland brand toilet paper, while BJ's will have 3-4 brands in addition to their generic version. Costco has great deals on a limited number of higher end gift cards. BJ's gift card selection is comparable to what you would find in Walmart or CVS (quite large), with often reasonable discounts off the face value of the card (except those where you can set a range for the card). BJ's also has 25% off greeting cards all year round, although that section is shrinking. BJs also has Express Checkout, by which you can use your phone to scan your cart items and pay via the app (if and when the in-store wifi is working, though it has gotten better in the past few months). That is where the good ends. The staff are hard to find and of mixed levels of approachability. BJ's seems to almost want you to use self-checkout, which is annoying because usually the reason I go there is to get gift cards, which you can't pay for via self-checkout. At best there may be four registers open with extremely long lines. Even the register configuration seems ill-thought from another era: instead of the conveyer pushing the items to the glass for scanning and then onto an area for carting, the conveyor stops and then the cashier has to scan the items and load them into a cart because there is nowhere else to put them. There is almost always someone with a card/payment issue--and not always behaving with the requisite humility to be expected when you might be in the wrong. I remember once once guy was upset because he couldn't use someone else's card and he flipped out and bounced his phone off the cases of beer he was trying to buy, almost hitting the supervisor in the face. This was after he was trying to work out with the cashier who was playing on her own phone how he would pay without a membership. The experience is a comedy of errors I repeat maybe once a month because I go there for very specific things. The quality and variety of fresh produce is far below that of Costco, though their bakery section is larger and more varied. Do I think the membership is worth it? Sure. Do I like going? Not really. The locations in Quincy and Waltham are cleaner, better organized and better staffed with much less drama, but they are farther out of the way for me. So in all, I wouldn't not go here. Just don't expect a pleasant experience. read more

This location has a lot of issues. Misleading signage and out of date promos are one of the issues I purchased $200 in groceries after seeing signage that it would be rewarded with a rebate of $20, come to found out those are old signs and they will not be honoring the promotion ( not a legal business practice ). Deli consistently closes early but is inconsistent on what time they decide is time to close, I asked the manager they said 30 minutes prior to store closing yet I've gone as early as an hour and a half before and was turned away so the deli employee could finish early to shop. They are also under stocked often, was unable to buy things such as New York strip steak, onions, potatoes, garlic all of these items are bare minimums for a store that charges a membership to shop there. I have been a Dedham BJs customer for a while. Even though I get what I want most of the time, the front desk customer solves most of my problems , I am not looking forward to shop there. I find most of the staff not properly trained and I feel like I am a nuisance for them. The bitter after taste I get it is at the Deli department., often understaffed or who knows over worked. They are compact, they're open when you need them open, their packages are not grossly big. All in all a comfortable place to shop.

Customer service is always great; the store is organized with isles labeled and neat. Products are consistent and priced well. It's my go to place for certain items that the other wholesale store doesn't have. And it's never so crowded that I want to turn around and leave. read more

BJs in Dedham has the absolute WORST customer service. I ordered a cake and I had a question about the information on the form and the employee in the bakery told me he didn't understand the form. I called the next day to speak to someone. No one in the bakery answered the phone. When they finally picked up the employee hung up immediately. I called member services and they tried forwarding me back to the bakery and no one answered again. I called several time in the span of an hour. I called the memelber services back and got hung up on 4 times. They picked up the call and immediately hung up. I had to go back to the store just to ensure my order was correct. When I spoke to the male employee i asked him why no one answers the phone amd he shrugged his shoulders as if to say he doesnt care. When I finally picked up the cake the same male employee walked by me when I let him know I was picking up a cake. He then walked over a minute later and asked me my name, gave me the cake and said nothing. BJs, you have to do better than hiring rude, ignorant, and barely speaking english employees. I rather deal with an AI robot than the people you hire!!! I'm disgusted with this Dedham Massachusetts store that I put in a complaint at the BJs headquarters and the person took my info and said someone will call me back to help me and never did! The quality of sirloin steak becomes below average because they hide large amount of fat underneath, out of sight. You find the fat when you open the package at home. See picture posted. I was upset because I spent a lot time cleaning the fat off their meat. Last time when grilling the fat on the steaks caught fire and had to throw all of it out, and you don't want burned meat. Their price of $6/pound is not a bargain, it's same as supermarket. But at Shaws or S&S their meat needs a lot less cleaning of fat a better bargain. Why am I Yelping... because I complained and they did nothing about it: I told the BJ's store manager, the main Butcher, I even wrote to the company, nothing has changed, leads me to think, it's BJ's policy to pack every package with fat, less labor cleaning, more profit for store. I called them I talk to a manager they told me to come in and they will correct the mistake. Note that if you buy a gift set of alcohol there's tax on it, but if you just buy straight up alcohol, there's no tax on it. They do have a great selection of gift sets, just be prepared for the tax. The prices on Triple Sec and St. Germain here are AMAZING. Most other alcohols are also competitively priced. read more

Installed old tires and ruined rims in process. Went here for tires for SUV. BFGoodrich AT T/A KO2. Took very long time for install then, when I got my SUV back I could see why- completely destroyed the rims- my fault for not taking pics before install but rims are cosmetically ruined! Spoke to manager who became defensive and denied damage though He was looking at my damaged rims. Now, thats not all- my new tires, as it turns out, are 9 years old. I found this out after washing car. Tires are that old brownish color of aged rubber. Took it to tire specialist and informed me that the tires, according to sidewall DOT information, are older and should not have been installed. Oh well. Lesson learned. read more

I bought my daughters birthday cake here. I filled out the slip with no help from the staff. I checked off that I wanted a cake that fed 6-8 people. When I gave it to a staff member-(a tall white lady). She questioned if I was sure I wanted this size because it was 5 inches in width on the top. I said that seemed small and in a aggravated voice she said back to me "Don't you know what 5 inches is?" I should have known right then not to purchase a cake from this place. I shopped here a few times this summer. A year or so ago, I took a huge break from this place (I sort of ran out of extra space for all the larger quantities!). I shopped here for a summer program this year and the employees at this BJ's store (specifically, returns), were very friendly and so understanding. I bought some frozen products and they came out of the freezers all melted, and after the school found out there was an issue with the freezer and refrigerator, they STILL accepted the items back! ( 3 boxes of ice cream sandwiches). This BJ's is also very clean, and HUGE. I prefer the Franklin BJ's over all of the rest, yet this store is local, has self checkout and is huge, so it works for me! Just be careful, on weekends its SUPER BUSY and may have a wait at the checkout area, otherwise just be careful to not get lost! *Also, keep in mind, this BJ's store technically has 4 entrances: two on Providence Highway, past the traffic light at Best Buy & Dedham Plaza (those exits are on for Providence Highway North though...), you can take a right at the Best Buy / Dedham Plaza / TGI Fridays traffic light, which I normally do, and continue on that road to BJ's, and you can enter that small road from Eastern Avenue, where the Papa Gino's sign is near the VFW post. * read more

When I went to unpack these into our pantry, I discovered mice chewings, feces, and urine throughout the entire packaging. This is disgusting! I visited this BJs last night to pick up a coconut cake as I have every year around this time for one of my employee's birthday. I always get his name placed on his favorite coconut cake without issues. No problem right? Wrong! Last night there was an issue because the caucasian guy with the baseball cap who was working in the bakery around 7:30, 8pm told me that he was not allowed to add a name to the coconut cake, but that I could do it myself. He invited me into the back to a metal table and preceded to plop all the decorating icing colors in front of me and said have at it. After he set the icing in front of me he went back to cleaning some disgusting spillage off the floor. Needless to say, I'll never be hired as a cake decorator so I'll add a pic. But really BJs? I'm disappointed. Now I have to present this "cake" to my employee as a gag gift. I'll be reaching out to the manager at some point also because the entire incident was absolutely deranged! Total insanity on 5/7/20. I stopped here for 2 items that were out of stock on Tuesday. There was a very long line waiting to enter, probably 40-50 people stretching to the rear of the store along the side of the building. Meanwhile, I saw at least 30 people leaving the store as I walked up to the entrance and not one person entered the store! It appeared that nobody who works for BJ's was by the door to direct people in as people left. I just turned around and left, I wasn't about to wait 30+ minutes just to enter the store! Management needs to get a grip on running this store. read more

I'm at the Dedham location today and I've had the worst experience ever and I've been shopping here this entire year. I tried to use a EBT government assistance card for my uncles groceries because he's handicap and a senior citizen so he cannot shop for himself . The cards magnetic stipe was out and as I've done every month this entire year I asked them to type it in and they told me that was not a possibility anymore. Carol the supervisor who helped me informed me that in the past they should have not done that because of company policy. However I Just Spoke with the Manager Karim J. ( a caucasian male about 5"7 with glasses) who informed me that the Carol was supposed to call him over if there was an issue and he could have done the transaction for me. I'm so hurt for the way I was treated and how Carol lied to my face without remorse. I never want to be treated like this again. read more

Rude staff. The employees that man the self-checkout areas are the worse. I've given them some slack in the past because they were so busy but today I went and the place was virtually empty and they were still inattentive and rude. The store us often filthy and disorganized. The self checkout machines often malfunction. They send me coupons in the mail but often don't have the item. When you inquire they say it's coming in on such and such a date and to check back - when you do it either still hasn't come in or the coupon is expired. Price on bulk items like tissue and paper towel cost less at Wegmans. So why am I paying for a membership? Up until recently I got a discounted membership that made it slightly worthwhile but I just was informed that this year BJ's has terminated their association with the organization I get the discount thru. So again why will I pay for a membership fee for same prices, rude treatment and a filthy environment? So I doubt if I'll renew even though I've been a member for almost two decades. read more

I am single so I cannot take advantage of the bulk items very often. I am able to with the meat - I portion it and freeze it. The meat is a huge deal usually. The deli meat is not a deal and often more expensive than a grocery store. I agree with reviews about the bakery items - all very good except croissants - they are dry. I buy in bulk items I use all the time - egg beaters ( freeze) fruit ( freeze) Pam, TP/ Paper towels. Now to the Booze - the deals are the best here - obviously the selection may be limited, a few examples. Belvedere Vodka - gift to a friend 750 ml 26.00 - at least 30 in most stores I think the stoli handle was approx 30 - huge bottle. The weird thing was the Tanquray Gin - seemed expensive to me. Wine - Oyster Bay Sav Blanc ( at least 12 - 16 at booze stores) 8.89 at BJ's They had a few better wines here - but a fav cheapo of mine Menage a trois red was 8.89 as well. You come here for the prices and get some bargains. But when you're walking out with a receipt totaling nearly $500, you certainly don't expect more than a glance at your cart full & receipt. To have the person at the door make you wait 3 minutes, while they let 4 others walk on by, and to question you about the bottle of vodka she thinks isn't on the receipt - disgusting. This place isn't bad, but I've definitely seen better prices (on a per ounce/each/whatever basis) at Target, when things go on sale, etc and I don't have to buy the larger quantities. I guess this place would work if I needed a lot of stuff in a pinch, but I usually can get by with whatever is on sale at the supermarket and picking up whatever else I need at Target. I've had both a Costco and BJ's membership for years, and preferred BJ's, although I always thought they were the most handicapped unfriendly store I'd ever seen. Costco I shopped at maybe three times a year. Recently, though, BJ's has changed nearly all the registers to self-checkout; some are always out of order or won't give cash back, some have to be used with a shopping scanner I've never seen any info about, or have some other temporary (?) quirk. Lines are much longer, no matter the day or the time. I only regret that I renewed my membership in August, because I won't be shopping there any longer. Management is unresponsive at best and last night when I was talking very respectfully to a manager regarding my thoughts on the new set up, he shrugged his shoulders and walked away. Is there anything more American than buying hoards of shit from a ginormous warehouse to convince yourself that you are getting a bargain? For toilet paper, paper towels, electric toothbrush heads, razors, bottled water, detergent and other items that you can never have too much of, it is totally worth the trip over. Sometimes you can get good deals on electronics and apparel (like my hot new Red Sox sweatshirt) but it's very easy to get lost and distracted by the vast assortment of over sized baked goods, frozen items, boxed fruits and vegetables and jugs of shampoo that would take a small army to consume. Definitely don't leave your cell phone in the car: it's very easy to wander off to the DVD section and lose track of the rest of your family. read more

Has nothing to do with store but Tire Center people rude and unprofessional. Pulled up in parking space near propane station. Guy sitting on steps, yells "propane or tires". I needed a tire because I punctured one on the way home. I said tires. Guy says , you parked in the wrong place. I asked where should I go?. Tire mechanic comes out of garage yells. You parked in the propane area! I ask where should I park. I need a tire. He tells me , I'm not getting one today. It's going to take 3 weeks. No one was being serviced at the tire center. The man didn't even ask me what size or how many I needed. Left and went to town fair tire down the road. Better price and better service. read more

One star because I do like BJs stores, but this location is aweful. They have no line management here. I waited in line at the customer service for 20 minutes and people kept cutting in and they would take them. They put me in a position where I had to say something. Common sense things about lines. On top of this when it's super packed on Sat/Sun they keep the Express line down. So if you need to buy one item your pretty much fucked and need to wait in a line where people are buying enough food to live underground in their bomb shelters. read more

I'm so indoctrinated in the Costco flow, BJ's throws me off just a little bit. But we keep coming, to fine tune the comparison between Costco and this wholesaler. BJ's certainly has an impressive cheese and butcher selection. That's been the standout feature so far. I've noticed there are some pretty good deals on two-packs of cheapo wine here. My biggest frustration with this BJ's is Chips. And at the end of the day, that's the worst thing that happened there - it's still been a good day. The end of each aisle is capped with giant bags of chips: two different kinds, for aisles and aisles and aisles, on both sides. This is frustrating as hell for the non-chip purchaser (probably as well the indecisive chip-picker). People bottle up while trying to decide between Nacho and Cool Ranch Doritos. Sadly, the cafe is of most importance - the pizza is just not as good here as it is at Costco. The Costco pizza is nasty-greazy, but it's so bad it's good. The pizza at Bj's is just not good. And the process to getting pizza needs some re-arrangement. You can never really get the cafe workers attention "May I please have some pizza?" and the cashier gets mad at you for not doing it yourself. C'est la vie. And a few folks have already mentioned this, but you can use any form of payment at BJ's. WOOHOO! And you can also use your card twice - whereas at Costo, one card = one purchase. You can't split hand your card to your buddy waiting behind you. All in all, I definitely prefer Costco, we go way back. It's loud and crowded, but it's home. read more

I would give them 5 stars but they can improve. The deli has the best and freshest meats around. If you ask for it sliced thin you will get it thin. Lasts 2 times as long in the fridge compared to Sudbury Farms at 1/2 the price for real. I also want to give them a plug for their office supplies. Same brand same pack I paid $58 at BJs and I am returning the the same product to Staples because I paid $72 at Staples. Makes me wonder what else I am over paying for at Staples read more
