This place is really good! Went for first time last night after high school graduation. Was just four of us but place was packed so it took around 30 min to get seated. I knew this was going to be good when I saw it was packed with all sorts of folks from India. Took awhile to get food but everyone was friendly and service good. We shared several dishes including Tandori Chicken (best I have had. Not dry, great sauce on bed of spicy veggies), Palak Paneer (very good though thinner than we would like), another Paneer starting with a K that's really good), and perhaps my favorite was the Goat Vindaloo ( spicy, creamy, yum). Definitely get the basil garlic Naan as well. We would have liked a beer but no alchohol served here (not sure if they plan to or if it's a religious or other reason). However, that meant our bill was under $60 and we were stuffed and took leftovers. If you want great Indian food from the Hyderabad region (Google it), you will not be disappointed! read more

We loved this place. The food was of excellent quality and the service fair. We've been customers since it opened. But over the course of the last two years, we have been disappointed every time. The experience of our last order was quite appalling. My online takeout order said 35 minutes. I got there and it wasn't ready. I kept asking 3 different folks and they seemed to forget my name between the time they went to check on my order in the kitchen. They emerge from the kitchen and have no idea who I am. After a while, they eventually found my order. It took me 30 more minutes before I received the food. There were quite a few disgruntled folks waiting for their food. Oh well, I wouldn't be writing this if that was all. Got home and the Goat Dum Biryani was cold and it tasted like it was made and packed yesterday, nada freshness! It was loaded with bones, maybe the goat was on a diet (inflation and all). The naan was dry and crackling like it would be if it was 2 days old and sitting out in the open. The Chicken Mughlai was missing salt. I added salt and it tasted better. The Saag Paneer was the only one that was tasty. We also visited this place to dine in about a month ago and the servers seem clueless. They have no direction, they suddenly notice that there are no menus on our table after 20 mins and they sneakily slide in the menu on our table as if they placed a bribe and walk away without saying a word! They have huge party orders every time I go there and it seems like that is the main emphasis here. And maybe those orders are still good quality. Everything else is headed down. Management is nonexistent and the servers desperately need some basic training. Could say more about the atmosphere but I'll just add this - some customer waiting for their order was ambling down the aisles while talking aloud on his cell phone stopping at random tables along the way like it was his own backyard. No one said a word to him! It felt like a marketplace. From what I have seen I feel nothing will come of this review but I hope it helps temper expectations for those visiting. I'm not sure if there is a change in cooks, but over the last few months the curries have been subpar compared to usual. What convinced me to write an update was my last to go order with friends. The chicken tikka lacked in flavor and had a watery consistency. The samosa was subpar and its outer wrapping was not the traditional wrapping used in samosas, which threw off the flavor. However, the worst and most disappointing part was when my friend (with brown hair) found a small black hair in her samosa. My friend ordered biryani and asked for it to be mild because he has digestional issues -- they gave him full spice biryani AND it came out late with very warm raita. My other two friends didn't get their samosas until after the entrees came out. The samosas looked like they weren't fried and they said they didn't have any chutney and offered ketchup and sriracha instead -- not even Maggi sauce. The fried goat biryani is honestly one of the best I've ever had and will definitely go back for more when I'm back in ATX. The chilli fish was also very good with flavor and spice although I wish it had more crisp to it but the slight sweet and spicyness complemented the rice pretty well. Curiosity led me to stray from my goto Indian joint and left me pleasantly surprised. Showed up super hungry and those enticing aromas filled my nose upon entry. Thus my tummy proceeded to grumble even further. Decided on the chicken lunch combo which arrived within a few minutes and was amused to discover that they serve it up on one of those cafeteria trays we used to eat from in grade school. Combo included fresh naan, a portion of green lentils with dollops of white cheese and some stewed chicken in slightly spicy tomato sauce, plus a deep fried fritter and some yummy mystery dipping juice. The centerpiece was a warm bowl of colorful seasoned rice with a tender drumstick hiding at the bottom. All very tasty with just enough heat to make me sweat (glad it came with a serving of veggied yogurt). Then you get to finish with some warm rice and raisin pudding. Decent deal for nine bucks considering how stuffed I got... and took the remaining half home for later. Certainly worth another visit next time I'm craving that curry! read more

Our server even said if it was too spicy that she would take it back and have the cooks make it less spicy. My family and I sat next to the owner of the place and they are amazing as well. The most interesting Indian restaurant I have found in Austin. It is a chain - but don't let that bother you. The recipes are outstanding. The clientele is overwhelmingly Indian. People who know - go. * It is a regional place - in this case the cuisine of Hyderabad. Regional restaurants tend to be vastly superior to general all purpose Indian-American or pan-globalized Indian. a) The cooks are cooking dishes they have known all their lives. b) The dishes are not being watered down for American tastes c) There is new stuff on the menu you have never seen before. All of this is good. * The main dishes are more interesting than the appetizers. But the appetizers are perfectly fine. They tend to be of the Pakora nature - simple fried goodies. Unlike Indian-American places - no sauce But this does not remotely mean unseasoned. The batter is more than just batter - and the flavors will sneak up on you over time. * Don't fill up on pakora though. There is good stuff coming on the entrees. I had a Mutton Mandhakini. My wife had the house special Andhra style fish curry. The dishes were mostly sauce with only modest amounts of fish or mutton. This is a positive, not a negative. What you are there for are sauces. Complex, wonderful, variegated sauces. The fish and the mutton are just things to put sauces on. * Like the appetizers, they sneak up on you. Your first bite and you think "Hey, what's the point? This is bland and ho hum!" Your first impression is guaranteed to be wrong. And you will discover ... as time passes ... the dishes are actually forty eight times hotter than the appetizers * What you are about to experience is a technicolor Mount Vesuvius. By the ten minute mark, your entire system will be on fire. But each part of your mouth will be on fire in a different flavor. Every bite you take will change the taste. Every bite you take will change the color of the fire. The dishes are full of endless surprises - and they are served at the full nuclear blast level expected by Indian patrons. * I have no idea if their namesake Biryani is any good. During lunch, they have a lunch plate with a variety of options (2 choices: Non-veg and veg) For vegans: The vegetable biryani has ghee in it and is pre-made, so can't be taken out. With majority of dishes having ghee or cream, I decided to get a dinner portion of the vegetable manchurian with rice! It was very flavorful and tasty- however too salty and oily for my taste. It is slightly spicy, so request mild if needed. Overall, not the best Indian food I have had nor an impressive environment. Located in the dilapidated HEB strip mall, this place is clean and welcoming. The decor is classy, not the over-the-top stereotypical Indian decor. We came in nearing the end of a lunch rush and the food came out efficiently and the service was warm and inviting, something one does not expect from a so-called authentic ethnic restaurant. This is definitely a great new option for Indian in North Austin. The restaurant is large, clean, and as Alicia mentioned, tastefully decorated. And I loved eating on a tablecloth but still being in a casual enough environment to not stick out wearing a hoodie and jeans. The staff is super friendly and accommodating. We ordered cafe samosas and sweet corn soup to start, followed by the veggie biryani. The samosas were totally forgettable, unfortunately - they tasted like the the frozen kind you'd get at the supermarket, and a were little too greasy. I've had much better ones elsewhere. The corn soup was tasty, if a little watery, but the biryani more than made up for any displeasure we felt with the appetizers. It was so flavorful, and it came with chutney and raita, both of which were delicious. It had just the right amount of heat for us, and you could easily cool it off with the yogurt or spice it up more with the chutney. We ordered one each, but that ended up being enough for about another 5 meals. We could have easily shared one plate, especially with the appetizers. Biryani Pot is one of those places that has been on my "to try" list for a long time, but I just never find myself in the area. It is pretty rare that I find myself near Mopac and Parmer, but I'll just have to change that, won't I? My review will be limited in that I got my food to go, so I can't speak to the service or the dining experience. With that said, Biryani Pot still blew me away because the food is amazing. I got the chicken biryani and the amount of food they give you is huge. Seriously. All that food was enough for three meals for me. THREE. From one order of biryani. Pretty crazy, right? Then there's the biryani itself, which is the best biryani I've ever had. It was bursting with flavor and stirring and mixing all the goodness together released quite the aromatic experience. This is exactly what I would expect from Indian food. I also got some butter naan and it was decent. There wasn't much in the way of a buttery flavor, but I was okay with that. I'm looking forward to trying the garlic basil naan next time. If bones in your food offends your delicate sensibilities, Biryani Pot might not be the place for you, but the meat literally falls right off the bone and it is easy to pick the bones out of your dish. (And not having bones in your meat seems to be a mostly American concept.) Bones add lots of flavor, so roll with it and just try it out. In the meantime, I'll just have to find reasons to come here more often because the food is totally worth the drive. read more

Biryani Pot serves delicious, fragrant biryani. The real accomplishment is how fluffy, toasted, buttery and singular the rice kernels are. It is definitely not mushy or undercooked and the beautiful extra long basmati rice is perfect. I will stick to only the biryani from now on. The lunch deal is pretty impressive for the display of food. I can't say I've eaten a salad out of a utensil compartment before! The accompanying chicken sausage kabob was dry. I also sampled the goat kurma curry and the sauce was nutty and full of tomatoes, but the goat was definitely not cooked or at the least married in the curry and that's a real highlight of meat curry dishes for me. The amount of meat on the bones was paltry and seemed over priced. For those wondering, this is halaal meat. The service was a bit confusing and kinda slow if you have a real time constraint. The hostess resorted to attending to us the most while others stood around "managing" or setting up the tables for dinner service more than 3 hours away. We weren't really given any instruction on how the lunch special works or if there were options to choose within the special, hopefully service will round out a bit. I started with the samosas and garlic basil naan and had the Gongura Mutton Curry with a Mango Lassi to drink. Service was quick on a Tuesday night as I was the only person in the restaurant when I arrived. Everything I had was great! The samosas were about 5 to an order, were small and slightly crisp on the outside with nicely seasoned potato and pea filling. The Garlic Basil naan was fantastic! Ever so slightly crisp but warm and chewy and lots of fresh garlic and basil flavor. The gongura mutton curry was also very flavorful with a large portion of very tender meat and a rich sauce that was fragrant and tasted very herbacious and of cardamom and moderate spiciness. (I asked for medium). The mango lassi was also very delicious and was the first time I've had one. Very creamy, smooth and with lots of mango flavor and just the right natural sweetness. The server was quick and very attentive and followed up to see how everything was and if it was the appropriate spiciness. Very good experience overall and very flavorful, homemade tasting food. I think I got in the way of a text message conversation the dude at the front was engaging in. He eventually acknowledged me, got my takeout order, rang me u...wait no important text msg again. I guess... I can wait...ugh us customers..always wanting something! I wonder what the important text messages were about? Was it his girlfriend breaking up with him for being an uncultured piece of shit? Or was about that cricket match India was losing? (ps. they lost) Who knows! Anyway, I got my food and paid some expensive amount (no tip, that I remember) and drove home. At home, ready to put this unnecessary exchange behind me, I open up the bag only to find one of the worst portions I have ever seen. My housemate saw the receipt and even he was like you paid how much for this? I don't remember exactly what I got...either chicken korma or butter chicken and a side of rice. Either way, it came in a tiny container which i finished in one sitting. Felt cheated that's for sure. It's amazing how customer service affects ones perception of an establishment. It seems there's a lot of menu items that are pretty decent here and this service can be chalked off as an anomaly, but why should I take the risk and give a 2nd chance when I wasn't amazed by the food, the portions were too small and price too expensive, and there are so many other options for desi food in the greater Austin area? My staple order is a goat fry, biriyani, any kabab and the vindaloo. They all are simply awesome. Portions are also big which makes it filling for two. Very reasonably priced. Extremely courteous staff. This one time they kept the restaurant open for 40 more minutes beyond closing time for a kid to finish his food. Superb experience everytime I have been there. We decided to try a little of everything that was recommended...from samosa, cauliflower (manchurian), chicken (masala), fish (red snapper), rice and veggies (green beans with coconut), potato & cauliflower (aloo gobi).....Can't recall all the dishes names....but there were all great! Each Chef has its own secret ingredient and I must say that I found out what it is the dishes we ate tonight. (LOVE).... The restaurant was clean, the owners made an effort to go to each table and speak with the customers making sure that they were all satisfied with there meal. We have eaten at many Indian Restaurant in NY, FL, VA and in TX. Being in Texas for nearly 3 years, this is by far the best Indian Restaurant I have had the pleasure to dine in. Our heart was happy and my tummy was extremely content....We have found our new Indian Restaurant and there is no need to eat anywhere else when it comes to Authentic Indian Food..Will definitely return, return and return here again and again....I also found out that this is a fairly new restaurant, I wish the owners the very best of luck. read more

Had thier non-veg lunch special: comes with a generous portion of Chicken Biryani - it had two pices of bone-in chicken, 1//2 Naan, small sides of Daal (lentil curry), chicken curry, raita (yougurt dressing), a few slices of lettuce, 1 papad and 3 small potato cakes. It's a lot of CARBS for lunch and sure to EITHER put you into a nice afternon coma OR the spices will tease your tummy good. The Biryani was spicy! I love spicy, but Biriyani is not supposed to be THIS spicy where it's exhausting to eat or makes you sweat like it did my friend. Went with 2 friends and we did not remember asking for spicy so not sure if that's the norm or somehow we mistakenly agreed to extra spicy. (Update: back and again spicy without asking for it). Now, I'm a bit of a Biryani snob, and I can tell you for a fact that this is NOT real Biryani because REAL Biryani is rice and meat cooked together in perfection so the Basmati rice is infused with the flavors of the meat and other stuble spices, emphaiss on STUBLE. This on the other hand is the same stuff that every Indian restaurnat serves where they stir up pre-cooked meat with rice and serve it. And it's OKAY, tastes fine even yummy but the place does not deserve the name. What I really can't get over are the trays, I don't know if it's just that I recently got done watching "Orange is the New Black" on netflix or what - but if the owners are listening the trays really kill the mood, the food, and significantly hurt the appetite. The Indian restaurants up here are putting those in South Austin to shame! Biryani Pot is another gem nestled in a strip mall between a pizza place and a UPS store. They are usually packed during lunch, and it's cause the food is that damn good! They offer a lunch plate where you choose your choice of meat (chicken or goat, both for $8.99) or vegetarian ($7.99) for your Biryani. Every day there are different sides and sauces, which is great because there's something new each time you come by and it's a looooot of food. I usually have to get a to go box on my way out. We've been here for dinner as well, and the food is just as delicious. The only reason I don't give them five stars is due to their service, especially at dinner. The appetizers are always served with the entrees, even if they're ordered in advance. Also, during all of our dinner visits, empty plates were left on our table (which was pretty small) and our drinks were not refilled. They do better with service during lunch, but could really work on it for dinner. Overall, it's definitely worth a visit.
