A quick meal before a show was required, we went in here. In true hotel fashion in the early evening it wasn't exactly busy, but it was busy enough. The music was Christmassy, but with an added taste of 70's downright bizarre. Nice surroundings, and chatty staff who were quick to drop the formal veneer when we were friendly to them.
I went for the salmon roll with cream cheese, followed by the Irn-Bru battered fish and chips with mushy peas - yes, that is correct, Irn-Bru battered.
The salmon roll was arguably a little over-cheesed and under-dilled in a sense, but it had enough flavour and the salmon was a light, subtle smoke. So I was quite happy but not amazed by the starter. The main though I found a bit odd, I didn't hate it, but the orangey Irn-Bru taste didn't work for me. It makes for a light batter and I think it is just a question of taste, but it felt like it was only in there for the Glasgow connection. I reckon lemonade would be much better for the job. The fish was lovely and flaky, the chips were fluffy and crisp on the outside, but I just couldn't get over the fact that I would have enjoyed it more without Glasgow's ginger. read more
