A solid wine list and a concise menu filled with shareable plates, what's not to love? All of the dishes we had were good, albeit not great. The cracker served with the beef tartare was a little on the stale side, the eggplant wasn't prepared well enough which lent to some bitterness and some dishes were slightly under seasoned, especially the spaghetti al limon which if it had slightly more salt would have really popped. The staff were all extremely attentive and personable which made the dining experience enjoyable. Birdie's serves up delicious, inventive, fresh, well-sourced food in an unpretentious, completely inviting, and fun environment. Everything on the menu was perfect (and yes, we did try everything), and had a unique profile of flavors that Tracy balanced in the most wonderful way. The beef tartare is delicious, has some nice nuttiness from some pecans, some tang from a nice olive oil/ garlic, and the homemade cracker accompaniment is perfection. The cold soup we had was also the tastiest bite of food I've ever eaten. That may sound extreme, but I'm not exaggerating. It was heirloom tomato, melon, and some herb oil if I remember correctly. Iconic. Perfect. I would eat a bite of that every day for the rest of my life if given the option. The fish dish and steak were also excellent. No complaints. Cannot go wrong. The service was fun, kind, and warm. All of our servers entertained our ravings about how great everything tasted, and enthusiastically explained some of their favorite wine options for a hot Austin summer night. One of the two times I've visited I had the opportunity to briefly chat with Tracy outside after the meal and to offer my thanks for such a fun, interesting menu and for creating such a pure and exciting culinary experience that manages to be innovative but warm and homey. You might wait in line for an hour but it's well worth that small part of your life for the fabulous fare. The menu is short and the food is simple. But wait!! It's wonderfully simple and locally owned by a darling couple: Tracy and Arjav!! From the luscious rose wine to the delicious crisp potato bites slathered in olive oil to the wondrous garden beets with ricotta, strawberries and hazelnuts, plus the perfectly cooked minute steak lightly covered with rich mushroom aioli and finally ending with the sumptuous vanilla soft serve drizzled with blood orange agrumato. Best hat money can buy. Seriously. I've worn this thing to work for almost 2 years now. I've lost and re-found the damn thing more times than I can remember. I've worked in sweaty food trucks, bakeries where flour is flung around day in day out, I've even worn this thing in the ocean. Through it all, the bill has kept its shape, the "birdies" name still has all its color, and it's as stylish as ever. The food was good too. I don't remember the whole meal because I ate there in March of 22 and I had never tried an orange wine before, but from what I remember the meal was almost as great as this hat. And that mean a lot. Plus they won restaurant of the year, you don't need some moron with an iPhone and an email to register for yelp to sell you on trying this place. I've been recommended this place quite a bit. It's a very Austin-like area with a desert modern chicness. The menu changes daily and the chefs put a lot of pride in their work. There are very clear good and bad things about this place. The good/saving grace? The food is great. The small bites like the squash toast is absolutely delicious, aesthetically trendy, and had great texture. The cavatelli option is what I picked for pasta. Pasta is house made and is bright, acidic, and cooked perfectly. It's a nice option that I would think would do well for a brunch since it's lighter than other places. The steak had great flavor and the little add ins paired well. The wine was okay, but the wine was not especially rare or expensive that I picked. A better wine list is available, so I would skip on anything that isn't sold as a bottle. The service is very attentive and the bathrooms are gender neutral. The bad? Quite a bit, but not at all about the food. They create a type of busy atmosphere by having a system where you order and pay up front and fend for yourself when looking for a seat. The line is out the door for that reason alone. The workers have no real place to rest, so many times they are either walking around looking for plates to buss or forced to block walkways (not their fault). The music is too loud for how small the place is, and there is little fabric to absorb sound. You'd have to speak at an uncomfortable level due to the combination of the small space, lack of fabric, floor and table materials, and brick walls bouncing sound around. I would opt for outdoors but even indoors had a few flies around disrupting the meal. The minute steak that was ordered didn't take a minute. The wait for it was nearly an hour, and with how small every bite is, this place will not fill you up. This place is also built for duos, I would not recommend a large party coming. The price for a snack, a small plate, and a large plate was $90 alone. My partner was also quite disappointed with the whole experience. Birdie's is a place for a special night out or a place to have long conversations with a friend with fancy bites of food. I enjoyed everything we ordered except for the desserts. Our dinner for 2 racked up $110 plus 20% tip (the lowest setting on their payment tablet) for a total of $132. We left very full. You tip upon ordering at the front counter before you even sit down. I don't think it's very French of them to do so and kind of throws off the vibe. I hope in the future they'll do away with the tipping system all together and pay their wait staff fairly. But all this just to say- the service was incredible. They offered to delay my order at the kitchen while my friend was running late. Our water carafe was always full. Empty plates were taken away promptly. The servers were very sweet and made us feel at home. Snacks - Panisse $10: four chickpea fries with grated cheese and pepper. Cooked well, creamy on the inside. A squeeze of lemon juice completes it! - Beet and Birdie's ricotta toast $10: four bite sized toasts topped beautifully and very flavorful. Small plates - Beef tartare $17: really enjoyed this! I wish there as more beef in the tartare but this was good portion - Sweet potato $14: three halves of small sweet potato. Where's the 4th half?! Larger plates - Minute steak $32: i would've subbed this out for 1-2 options from "Snacks" or "small plates". Dessert - Vanilla soft serve $9: topped with blood orange flavored olive oil. I look hard for dog friendly restaurants and Birdies was so kind and welcoming to my sweet baby. There was a bit of a wait when we arrived but you are able to order wine while you wait, which was lovely. They have a huge patio! You can order additional plates and drinks from the table and have it brought out. Initially upon arrival you order at the counter inside and have your food brought to your table. Out of everything we ordered I was obsessed with the beef tartare, I could've eaten two of those plates. The minute steak was also incredibly delicious as was pretty much every dish tbh. They have an extensive wine selection as well and for a hot night I ordered the sparkling wine, to be fancy. The atmosphere is bright, open, and pleasant with a full view of the kitchen and set in a beautiful home. We sat outside in the back yard where trees, lighting, and even the tables contribute to the elegant feel. The wine list is exceptional and you can see they cater to Sommeliers in town. After reading reviews, we knew to get there early, and the plan was to arrive about 1 hour early, but we ended up arriving 15 minutes early to no line on a Wednesday. We were excited, but, when we entered, I was able to grasp the complaints of other patrons. When you enter, you walk up to the host where you place you entire order at that time. It was annoying and it felt like pressure because this was our first visit and we had a lot of questions about the drinks and the food. It would be a lot better, less stressful and more streamlined if you just placed your order for drinks and then was allowed to sit, take your time perusing the menu and then placed your order all at once from your table. The only other complaint I have is that if you choose to sit outside, they do not have citronella candles nor is the area treated, so bring your bug spray or stay indoors. Besides those issues, the food was fantastic and we enjoyed every single dish. The menu does change often, but for our visit, we dined on the turnips, french bread and cheese, lumache, snapper and the chocolate chip cookie. read more

Excellent food and deep wine list. On the night of our visit, service was friendly and plates were coursed out seamlessly. The interior is warm and elevated/casual in that way that Austin has perfected. It feels like a special meal without your feeling self-conscious about what you're wearing or knowing how to pronounce every menu item. It also has a restroom that is a candidate for one of the prettiest in town. Highlights of the menu were: minute steak, chicory salad, every single pasta dish, and the soft serve. That being said, I understand other diners' frustration with counter service ordering. We went early enough that the line wasn't long, but even so, being beholden to the decision making speed of the people in front of you requires a sort of patience that you either have or you don't. (I don't.) And at an even deeper level, it requires a sort of camaraderie that is in short supply in a pandemic-weary world. Slow talkers, small talkers, those that want to quiz the provenance of every item -- maybe glance at the menu before you arrive and think of the hungry people waiting their turn behind you? And for my fellow impatient ones, keep envisioning that first glass of wine and enjoying the still-too-rare company of friends. If you are coming here, just now that if you come in peak times, you'll definite have to wait. There's some seating inside, but there's more space out in their patio. As you wait to get to the counter to order your food and get a sign/number, I got a question mark as my sign, lol, a la Riddler style, hostess walks down the line of hangry customers to take down a drink order. Got me a Yokefellow beer and wifey got a Fairweather cider to chill while we waited. Their music playlist is off the charts. I asked Siri to tell me the names of 3 or 4 songs. Saved them all to my playlists. Ambience is just a-all-right. From their snacks, we ordered the Panisse, a golden chickpea fritter fried to perfection and topped with pecorino and black pepper. We also got the beef tartare with pecans, Sonora wheat berries, which I initially thought was orzo. This is accompanied by a Carta di musica, which sounds super fancy, but it's just a long, thin crispy cracker with some tasty herbs on top. This tartare was definitely different from what I've had before, but different in a very good way. The texture from the pecans and the Sonora was a very nice touch for the beef tartare. For our larger plates, we got golden tilefish with a chilled corn broth, eggplant, and pickled peppers. Finger licking good. Nuff said. We also got the 44 Farms minute steak with field peas and Steelbow's magic peppers, which probably are named after their magical heat that is between sweet and a bit low on the Scoville charts, perfect for any palate. A creative and well put-together menu of shareable plates, all of which have been perfect -- from the small plates of beets or olives, to the more substantial plates. The ordering process feels like something that might be better suited for San Francisco or Williamsburg in willingness to be denigrated... the experience starts with a first-come uncovered line in the Texas heat/sun... the need to line up is a function of the counter-style ordering despite what feels like a quality full-service restaurant that easily gets up there in price point -- including a varied wine list, where the opening, tasting, and pouring of a bottle for the entire party is awkwardly standing over the Square payment terminal... while the parched line baking in the sun looks on from behind -- before your hands are full with stuff to carry off and find a table, all after tipping. Fantastic food and friendly waiters and staff. I came here with my daughter who had been here once before and also loved it. We sat at the counter and I would do that again. Patio seating is picnic tables and a bit funky to me with dogs, kids, poor lighting at night, but the counter was fantastic and the inside tables seemed delightful but few. As an older guy, I'm not a fan of standing in line to order and the "counter service", which was slow but friendly. Jesse was the host and came outside with the wine list and promptly served us wine outside on a perfect evening. It could be interesting with different weather, but last night was perfect. The cooking staff was efficient, quiet, but man what a presentation and phenomenal flavors of everything we tried. We had a fantastic dinner at Birdie's! Truly, this was a perfect Austin dining experience--excellent, upscale food but with a casual Austin twist. We loved everything we ordered, seriously. Both of the pastas on the menu (one lighter and lemon-y and the other a little heavier with sausage with a bit of spice) were heavenly, and even the olives (appetizers) were marinated in a nice citrus-y sauce. My friend loved the steak tartare and said it was super unique with pecans folded in. And you can't leave without trying the frozen yogurt--the kind we ordered tasted like a dreamkscicle. The "Austin twist" I mention is that, for this super upscale food, you order at the counter, and most of the seating is outside under a tent, which I loved. They put the bottles of wine you order in clear tote bags with ice, which is actually pretty cute. Service is great, though note that there are no reservations. Birdie's website says it opens at 4:00pm, but it actually opens at 4:30pm. FYI, and if you show up early like we did, we had no problems getting in and no wait (other than waiting for the restaurant to open). Wonderful spot, and we'll be returning for sure. read more

Birdie's is located in a trendy neighborhood on East 12th St. The atmosphere is ideal for a date but also for a night out with friends while enjoying an exquisite glass of wine. Pros: their wine selection and quaint yet trendy vibe makes it perfect for a date night. Their menu is concise with really solid and exquisite choices. Cons: you cannot make a reservation so plan ahead and get early if you dont want to wait. Also, have the courtesy of checking their menu online before getting there so you're not hanging at the register while deciding what to get and holding up the line. It is on the pricier side but its not really a problem since the food and the wine are worth the money. The food is delicious but modest portions. If you're really hungry you'll need a couple of dishes but they are all flavorful and make it a really good experience. I personally just enjoy coming here to enjoy a good glass of wine with a couple appetizers. read more

Birdie's is a really cute spot in an unexpected location right on 12th. I drive by frequently and am always amazed at the long line. I popped in on a weekday around 5:45p and walked right up to the counter. When I left around 7:30p there was a line of 20+ diners waiting outside. Now that I have visited, I understand why the wait is so lengthy. The ordering process is all done at the single register upon arrival. It's an extended interaction per party as the host explains the menu and ordering process while providing wine samples. My initial order was two snacks (okra, eggplant), three small plates (arugula salad, both pastas) and two glasses of wine and it was ~$130 so it's definitely pricier for the quantity of food. While I'm happy for the accolades that Birdie's has received, I'm a bit surprised after trying the food. The only item that really blew me away was the dessert- vanilla soft serve with agrumato. The blood orange olive oil paired with the creamy soft serve is a must order treat. The mushroom pasta was rich and perfectly al dente and the arugula salad was extra bitter but other than that, the dishes weren't particularly memorable. Birdie's has a nice and lively environment. For a while there was no host outside so people in line were confused on the process and when I went to place an order they insisted I should order more - even though I made it clear it was enough. Aside from that, I was pleased with the food - I wanted the snapper but they were out by the time I arrived so I got the gnocchi and was not disappointed. Do yourself a favor and check out Birdie's. It is, IMO, the most exciting restaurant to open in Austin in a while. They do things a little differently than some other restaurants so don't come expecting a run-of-the-mill experience. There's going to be a line. Be prepared to wait a few minutes. The kitchen is super small so it's no surprise there's a bit of a wait. Waiting isn't unpleasant at all because you can get to drink wine in line! Speaking of wine, good lord! This place has one of the most impressive wine lists I've ever seen. The staff are quite well versed in all the wines and will be able lead you in the correct direction. If you're lucky, you'll talk to one of the owners of Birdie's - his wine knowledge is vast. Once you get to the front of the line, take your time with the menu and ask lots of questions! The person ringing us up was very helpfulI. I was assured by the staff that this is the way things are supposed to work: it takes pressure off the (again, very small) kitchen to have you order before you sit down and ensures that you'll never be waiting too long for your next dish. So, you're actually doing everyone a favor by reading the menu carefully! The food is incredible, perfectly seasoned and fresh. We went to Birdie's twice in one week and the menu had already changed. Between the two nights, we tried everything on the menu. My advice: order something you wouldn't typically order. I didn't know what to expect from the sweet potato with mascarpone and bacon bits but, wow, just wow. Whatever you do, get the pasta and finish off your meal with the soft serve. We were some of the last to leave the second night we were there. I took the photo attached as we were leaving. We got a chance to chat with the two owners. They are a husband and wife couple, he's front of house and she's the chef. This is their first restaurant after having worked in industry for a decade or more and you can tell they've poured their heart and soul into it. Do yourself a favor and give Birdie's a try. This is easily one of my favorite Italian restaurants in Austin! It's high-end Italian food without the intimidating and darkly lit high-end Italian atmosphere. You will wait in line for awhile before you order at the bar, but they have someone come out and take your drink order so you can have a glass of wine while you do so. Don't come here if you're in a hurry, it's definitely more of a slow paced date night for 2. If you don't like waiting in lines (which you will), come early or on a weekday. We came at 4:30 on a weekday and only waited in line for about 10 minutes. Everything was so fresh, and you can even watch them hand making the pasta. The only thing we weren't totally wow'd by was the minute steak. It was pretty bland and cold, and came out long after we had eaten everything else and were stuffed, but we will just try something new next time! To be honest, at first we were a little sad by the limited amount of pasta dishes without meat, but they far exceeded my expectations. Came to check out the new local wine bar and it's super cute with a rather small but flavorful menu. If you've read my previous reviews I love restaurants that do small condensed menus because these dishes are usually perfected by the kitchen. Soo...the menu did not disappoint and had a variety of flavorful combinations that I would've never imagined would taste good together. Somehow they capture texture and flavor in every single dish that my best friend and I ordered. The fried squash blossoms was a flavor explosion in my mouth, I didn't know anchovies and cheese could taste so good combined together. The pannise reminded me of a cheese bread but also had a somewhat grainy like texture and the touch or peppercorns was perfect! The blistered okra was pretty good but the sauce accompanying it added so much more depth of flavor with a lemony undertone but a creaminess of a salad dressing. Lastly the Orecchiette with in house sausage reminded me of a cacio e Pepe with a chewy noodle, the house sausage added that much needed fatty consistency without oversalting the dish, everything was perfect! I look forward to seeing birdies grow, the only thing I wished is that we could also order snacks at the table. I have a hard time believing anyone would give Birdie's anything less than 5 stars. Much lauded by many a professional reviewer, Birdie's captures on an East Coast trend towards high quality ingredients in simpler dishes where flavor really pops. Nothing here is stupid expensive yet there are dishes here that are better than anything else I've had in Austin. For example, they are able to elevate dishes like a tomato-based pork cavatelli via sourcing and matching flavors perfectly. I've had incredibly beautiful presentations of veggies and top quality seafood here, but I really think the pastas shine. Pro tip (stolen from my friend): Combine the two desserts and enjoy yourself an interesting rendition of cookies and ice cream. I recently attended this East side eatery for a friend's birthday. There was a prefix menu only available so that immediately limits what you are able to choose from. However the appetizers and desserts were up for choices. There were a couple things in the middle that you could customize but overall predetermined. This place has turned to counter service post pandemic which isn't an issue at all, the food runners are very accommodating and friendly. Should you want anything else to drink you just order with the QR code on the app or website. The main issue here is that every other dish was good and the ones that weren't fell super flat. Particularly the dessert none of them had any major things to write home about. The truffle fries with their truffle aioli was certainly the greatest thing they delivered second was the beef bourguignon. The potatoes on that dish were heavenly. The space is very small and cozy, parking is awful so be very cognizant of how many people are in your party. This was a decent place not something that I think I would go back to willingly but not something that I hated drastically. read more

Great management but to wait and stand around I have a different idea of what I call a evening out. Very expensive small menu not worth the wait n expense for me. The quality is over the top delectable n healthy and worthy of the price point's. I wouldn't suggest visiting on a busy night you will stand in line 30/45 minute's. TINI PORTIONS, it's all self serve, and the quality is 50-50 at best, half of your dishes taste good and the other half taste like wonder bread if you removed all the sugar. For the unreasonable price that one will pay to dine on their MINI TABLES, you are 4X better off (literally in terms of total cost) going to one of the hundreds of high-quality reasonably priced restaurants in Austin. Got to agree fully with fellow customer Rosie B. and others. Prices too high and portions too small, although the food was fresh and mostly well prepared. For the price ($150 for two), the patio seating was very uncomfortable with metal tables that left hole indentations on your arms and backless benches that shifted a bit. The environment was nothing special and the white rodent bait station on the floor as you left the interior room for the patio could had been placed out of sight instead of right in your face. Sloppy. Staff were nice (such as fellow with NY Yankees cap) but overall the price point is not appropriate. Seafood dish was very good. Pasta although flavorful was drenched in too much sauce. This is a great restaurant with delicious food and wonderful wine choices. However, I left hungry...:( My daughter and I got 4 dishes which included an entree but it wasn't enough. We got a few vegetable sides which cost about $15 each and the little bowls were about 3" wide. They were delicious but only had a few bites. I guess I don't understand why the "buzzier" the restaurant is, the smaller the portions...? I know that the restaurant business is difficult, but I wonder if there is another model that provides enough food and still maintains excellent quality (that this restaurant clearly has). read more

Music was great (soulful strut, velvet underground, guns of Brixton, etc) and food was even better. Had the best Squash soup of my life; zucchini with ricotta was amazing and the homemade pasta with bolognese was superb. Am excited to go back again soon. read more
